Cubs Notes: Hammel, Pitching, Baez

By Zachary Links | July 12, 2015 at 1:58pm CDT

Here’s a glance at the latest out of Wrigley..

  • Good news for the Cubs and Jason Hammel as his MRI results were promising, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune tweets.  The hurler is expected to make his next start after the All-Star break.   Hammel, 32, owns a 2.86 ERA with 9.1 K/9 and 1.6 BB/9 through 17 starts this season.  If Hammel was sidelined for a significant amount of time, the Cubs likely would have had to ramp up their pitching search even more.
  • The Cubs survived a scare when it came to Hammel’s injury but that situation only underlined the team’s need for starting pitching help, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Sun Times writes.  “Scare’s probably a good word,” GM Jed Hoyer said. “It makes you realize every team, every pitcher can go down at any time, and you have to have the depth to handle it. … We know we still have to continue to push that.”
  • Javier Baez has been cleared to swing a bat but there’s no timetable for his return just yet, Jesse Rogers of ESPNChicago.com tweets.  The Cubs have been on the lookout for pitching and it was reported last last month that one possible deal was disrupted when Baez suffered a broken finger.

Do we have any idea what the Baez trade was? I’ve seen it referenced a couple times here, but not elsewhere.

I see the Cubs as the most likely landing spot for Hamels. They need a controllable ace to pair with Lester and Hamels seems like the perfect guy for the job. Problem is I can 99% guarantee that RAJ will demand Schwarber and probably Almora in any Hamels trade and idk if the Cubs will wanna do that. But of course, you gotta give quality to get quality.

That is why I don’t think that trade will happen. The more likely outcome would be the Cubs signing Price, Zimmerman, or another big arm in the post season (maybe Shark will come back at a decent price).

Shark was a one-year wonder and like I said, Price or Zimm will cost about $200m more than Hamels.

Nah Cubs fans don’t want shark back. I’d rather sign Zimmerman to 4 Year deal with a lot of options for a 5th and 6th year. If he wins 12 games his first year the 5th year automatically kicks in. Incentives like that

Arrieta is good, but I’m not sure I’d call him better than Hamels. And even if he is the Cubs need another frontline starter and all the frontline starters that are available in the near future are either free agents at the end of the season or will cost you about $100m more than Hamels would.

Cubs need to go and get Charlie Blackman. Lefty with power!

I wouldn’t mind that-left-handed bat with power–but I’m always leery of taking a guy with hitting success from Coors Field–I’d like to look at his Home/Away splits–also would probably be somewhat pricey.

I like Venable, Reddick, or Zobrist as the hitting targets-

Pitching targets as a Cubs fan I like Kazmir or matching up with Seattle or Florida and discussing some lesser deals such as James Paxton or Tom Koehler–neither are flashy, front-end but both put Hendricks into the 5-spot in the rotation so I think that would be a win for us… If we can get Kazmir and Reddick for a package centered around Billy McKinney and either Underwood or Steele, that may be a deal you have to look at….McKinney is now a consensus top 50 prospect and is in the top 30 on most lists–so it’d be a tough pill to swallow but having Reddick on board for 2016 as well may be worth it..

Sorry but if you’re gonna trade anyone from the Cubs for pitching it has to be Castro. He’s at his peak for one. Two. He doesn’t seem like he’s gonna improve on D. He never hustles out a groundball or even a DP. He’s rarely clutch except his two walk off hits this year. He’d probably bring back the best package. Castro, Almore Voglbach, and Arismendy Alcantara plus cash for Hamels, Papelbon(who would be flipped immediately)and Richaro Pinto. Or the same package for David Price and 2 PTBNL. I am not too sure who is good for the tigers.
