Heyman On Padres, Tigers, Cubs, Phillies, Orioles, Sox, Reds, Marlins, Yankees

By Jeff Todd | July 24, 2015 at 1:44pm CDT

The real question facing the Padres at present is not whether to buy or sell, but how far to go in moving pieces, writes Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. At least one rival GM expects the club to “sell big,” and Heyman says that San Diego is “offering around” closer Craig Kimbrel and starter James Shields, both of whom are under long-term control. While the former would figure to have a wide market, potentially including the Blue Jays, Nationals, and Dodgers, another GM says that he believes the club would have to chip in cash to move Shields. That may indicate that he could become an August trade piece, Heyman suggests, because he could well clear waivers. San Diego is interested in adding a young shortstop, he goes on to note, and has looked at several of the Brewers options (Jean Segura, Luis Sardinas, and top prospect Orlando Arcia).

Here are more highlights from the column:

  • Heyman hears that the Tigers are still weighing their options, too, and have not decided to sell. The club could even add an arm, he says, and is likely to see how its next two series play out before reaching a final conclusion.
  • While the Cubs are indeed willing to consider including Starlin Castro or Javier Baez in a deal for Cole Hamels of the Phillies, a source tells Heyman that the team would not be interested in moving both to add the lefty. Philadelphia’s plans for Hamels remain something of a mystery, but per the report the club may be backing down from its previous high-end demands from clubs like the Dodgers (Corey Seager or Julio Urias) and Red Sox (Mookie Betts or Blake Swihart).
  • There is now virtually no chance that Phillies lefty Cliff Lee will try to make it back this year, and he appears likely to retire over the winter.
  • As they approach the deadline and look ahead to free agency, the Cubs have some limitations on their spending capacity but will nevertheless try to add David Price (at least once he hits the open market). Meanwhile, the team has at least some interest in Reds starter Mike Leake as a trade piece but are somewhat hesitant to pursue rental options. While the Giants have plenty of rotation options, they too have considered Leake.
  • While we’ve just heard a suggestion that the Orioles could reverse course, Heyman says that they are still weighing outfield additions. The team has considered rental pieces like Marlon Byrd, Gerardo Parra, and Justin Upton. And he suggests that Carl Crawford or Shane Victorino could make sense as well; presumably, Baltimore would only be interested in either if their current clubs paid down a good bit of salary.
  • The Orioles intend to make qualifying offers after the season not only to Matt Wieters and Chris Davis, but also to lefty Wei-Yin Chen. The 30-year-old never seemed like a qualifying offer-level player, but was strong last year and has put up even better results in 2015 (while significantly outperforming his peripherals, it should be noted).
  • The Red Sox have received no trade interest in struggling first baseman Mike Napoli, says Heyman, but has gotten hits on Victorino as well as bullpen arms Koji Uehara and Junichi Tazawa.
  • The White Sox are looking to add some volume if they deal righty Jeff Samardzija, says Heyman. Chicago would like to pick up four young pieces in any trade.
  • While the Marlins have fielded interest in righty Tom Koehler and super utilityman Martin Prado, the club is not interested in dealing either player at present. Meanwhile, Miami is open to dealing veteran Dan Haren, but has rebuffed at least one club that asked for money to be sent along with him.
  • The Yankees are looking at both second base and top rotation candidates, says Heyman, but don’t feel a pressing need to add in either area. New York has no interest in veteran Diamondbacks infielder Aaron Hill, he adds.
  • Be sure to check out the rest of the piece for more notes on many of the teams around the league.

I don’t really like how the Cliff Lee note was kind of hidden in there and put bluntly. He’s always been a fan favorite in Philly, and will always be remembered for his dominance in the 2009 World Series. Thanks Cliff! Enjoy retirement!

It’s always sad when a guy goes from being referred to as “Phillies ace Cliff Lee” to “Phillies lefty Cliff Lee.”

It’s a minor update in the middle of trade season. He was never expected to throw this year. And as for retirement, that’s obviously still open, but you can be sure that we’ll give him his full due whenever it occurs.

Jeff, if I recall he has an option buyout for next year. If he retires does he forfeit that, or does he work something out with philly?

I’m sure there will be some sort of agreement w. the club and maybe the insurance company (if applicable). I also wonder if the MLBPA will play any role, as they have a vested interest in making sure every player is paid his contract.

It’s a simple procedural matter, really. No way he doesn’t get paid unless he wants to give it up for some reason.

The fate of the Tigers for the next 5-10 years could be defined by their performance over the next 3 games. Perhaps the biggest July series in their history.

Ironic, but if they lose weekend, that may be better for them longterm than if they win this weekend.

A bit overdramatic there. Tigers are a long and storied franchise. Biggest July series of their history? Important next few days, but let’s face it, they will need to rebuild eventually regardless of whether they sweep the Red Sox. They’re better off dropping the next three so they can get the ball rolling.

Yes. I think it is. Why? because the dollars and obligations are huge. The Owner is 88. The next generation of owner seems to more controlled in spending. They have no farm system left.

… and they never could win the big one.

It may be that they decide to win one last time. Lose and then fall for a decade.

Ownership is looking for a reason to NOT sell. If they sell, attendance and TV Ratings will go down, which is important as they are about to negotiate a new contract. With the young nucleus, even if they sell, it won’t be a long term rebuild, more of a reset.

      Price for Strasburg.

That trade buys you more time to make a real determination on the future of the franchise. It also makes the Nats better this year and allows them to re-sign Zimmerman.

At first glance you seem correct, but think about this for a bit. Are the Nationals better off heading into this postseason with Price or Strasburg in the rotation? Is this year Washington’s best chance at a championship considering some important players are heading to free agency this off season?

I think the Tigers are the team that is apprehensive here. Will Strasburg’s body hold up?

It’s an interesting trade, but it doesn’t make sense. Strasburg has faced injuries his entire career and is also a free agent at this year’s end. Plus, he’s been pretty bad.

I know it sounds goofy… I came up w/ this when looking at the rental market for ace pitchers since the new CBA kicked in… It wasn’t tough since Greinke and Lester are the only two ace-level pitchers to be rented at the deadline in that period…

Greinke: 55th ranked prospect (Segura); two nothing ‘rprospects.’
Lester: 1 year of an All-Star big leaguer (Cespedes)

Since the Tigers probably won’t want to rebuild, and they’d likely prefer to get more back than a single good-but-not-great prospect, I thought the Lester model would be preferable to them.

…and that’s where Strasburg comes from. He’s an all-star big leaguer with 1 year remaining on his deal. By dealing for him, the Tigers could either trot him out on opening day next year – or they could decide to go a different route over the winter and trade him. Either way, this delays the ultimate decision that they’re being pressed into right now. So it makes sense for them, imo.

For the Nats – Price simply gives them a better chance to win this year. Yes, they’re giving up a year of Strasburg, but in doing so, they’re likely keeping Zimmerman. So, again, it makes sense. Consider the deal to be Price for Strasburg this year – but Zimmerman for Strasburg over the next 7 years.

Stras will be a FA after 2016, not 2015. Price will be a FA after 2015. At the very least, if DET trades Price for Stras – they better think they can lock Stras up considering they’re giving away a key compensatory draft pick. And with their farm system where’s it at, they cannot afford to give up another pick and gamble on Stras’ 1 year in Motown.

They don’t need to do anything of the sort regarding an extension for Strasburg. Trading for him actually puts them in the same position with Strasburg that they were in w/ Price a year ago. Again, this move simply buys them more time on what will be a franchise-altering decision.

Here are the 4 options they’d have with Strasburg.

            1) Re-sign him. This puts them ahead of the curve since few think they’ll re-sign Price.

            2) Trade Strasburg for prospects in the off-season. Will it bring back a bounty? Absolutely not. But neither will Price at this point. In fact, because an off-season trade would afford the safety net of a compensatory pick to the acquiring team, the argument can easily be made that Strasburg would bring back more in the off-season (prospect wise) than Price will now.

            3) Keep Strasburg on a one-year deal, then trade him at mid-season if they’re not in contention. This would put them in the identical spot they’re in right now.

            4) Let Strasburg play out his contract, lose him to free agency and be granted a compensatory pick in the following draft. Again, this puts them in the same situation they’re facing at the moment with Price.

I think a year and two months of Strasburg is worth more than a mid 30’s draft pick. You haven’t even considered what a year of Strasburg is worth this offseason should the Tigers flip him.

Any GM Involved: “OK, what will you give up?”
Cashman: “Brendan Ryan, Ramon Flores and any prospect who is not currently a top five prospect”

…..And that is why the Yankees will not be getting a high-end pitcher this deadline, unless they fleece someone.

And where, may I ask, has that been said? I think it’d take a miracle for them to part with Judge, and it’d take some convincing to pry away Severino unless some control comes with the acquired piece, but that’s about it. I could see just about anyone else being on the table if it makes sense. I don’t see many other teams lining up to part with their top prospects either.

Wasn’t said anywhere. Severino and Judge aren’t going anywhere. I doubt Bird or Refsnyder (especially if 2B is a concern) are either. So maybe a team wants to make a play on Mateo or Sanchez? I’m not certain the Yankees would move Sanchez either. I don’t think Cash intends to move any of his top 5 prospects for a rental and the guys after that aren’t fetching something longer term. Maybe he lands a Gavin Floyd type, but that’s not what the article states they’re targeting.

You’re getting a lot thumbs down, but you’re not necessarily wrong. Rentals don’t have the price tag they once had…. An ace like David Price would probably fetch a prospect haul centered around a guy ranked anywhere from 40-60. The problem for the Yankees is that the only two prospects they have even land on prospect lists are Judge (now 13th) and Severino (now 17th). Both those guys are worth more than a rental at this point… So they aren’t going anywhere.

As for the other guys… because they’re not standout prospects in anyone’s mind, the Yankees would have to package at least 2 of them – maybe all 3 – to even keep a team on the phone. They can’t afford to do that, which is why they’re unlikely to get one of the big rentals.

Yes, that’s my point. It’s not a knock on Cashman or the Yankees, it’s just reality. What the Yankees want would cost more than they are willing to give up (and Cash knows this and has stated it multiple times) and what they could give up is not worth what they would get.

They MIGHT add a veteran innings eater like when they added Derek Lowe, or a change of scenery guy (like when they added Shawn Chacon) but they’re not adding a Cueto or Hamels etc.

And NY doesn’t really have to. The only places they can realistically upgrade are 2B, right-handed middle relief (a luxury not a need) and in the rotation IF they removed CC. But CC is least likely to come out with his pay check and he has put together back to back good starts.

It’s just a perfect storm for NY to stand pat, or do something drastic and unnecessary.

Why would the Yankees give up top prospects for a pitcher? Their rotation compares favorably to any of the likely playoff teams. They don’t have any pressing needs so they won’t be giving up much in any trade.

Failed but what he did was complete different from the past 10 years. Waiting on their countless busts (ie. Tate, bush, carillio, schimdt, dykstra) didnt seem to work either. Even tho it didnt work he still has a chance to rebuild the farm with the trade deadline. Should get some nice returns with some of the assets he has.

Yes I liked what he was trying to do, but it didn’t really make sense. It’s was a team full of “stars” with big flaws in the team. All he had to do is wait for a year or so for Turner, Ross, Wisler, Peterson, etc.. Then with less flaws, he could’ve fixed the teams flaws there and will make more sense.

Wisler hasn’t pitched well this year according to saber metrics and Ross has. People are harping on the Trea Turner deal but forget they have an equally respectable SS prospect in Jose Rondon they picked up in the Street deal who’s only 21. Meanwhile Jace Peterson has given nearly identical production as Corey Spangenberg and has started to cool off. He’s down to BA .247

Wisler and Ross don’t hurt as much cause you can find pitching for Petco. Many guys want to come pitch here to rebuild value. Padres only need 1-3 cause they can find 4-5 guys on cheap deals hoping to restore value in a year or 2.

What the Padres don’t have is a true CF prospect or MLB ready guy.

Rondon is 3-4 years away so getting a SS and CF is top priority in trades. Which Upton and Kimbrel can bring back.

Rondon has no exceptional tools, he is just steady at everything. This year he is hitting .267 between high A and AA. Turner had two exceptional tools and he hit .322 between AA and AAA. No comparison. One is a top 10 prospect in the entire game, the other isnt a top 200 prospect.

Cause top prospect and minor numbers and tools guarantee MLB success?

If Turner succeeds Preller is an awful gm but if he doesn’t match his top prospect status nobody is going to give Preller credit for not sticking with Turner. Also, still concerns of Turner can stick at SS at the MLB level last I heard. If he indeed can’t and had to move to 2nd that also wouldn’t have solved the Padres SS gap.

Cause top prospects and minor league success= MLB HOF or success right?

Point is until Turner pans out at the MLB level no reason to harp on trading him. What if he doesn’t pan out? Byron Buxton was the #1 ranked prospect last year- so far in the limited time he’s been up he didn’t look that way. So if Turner doesn’t pan out are people going to apologize or give Preller credit? Doubt it,

People were upset at trading jace Peterson- he’s currently hitting .247/.325/.346
Corey Spangenberg .254/.304/.356 before he injured his knee.

Joe Ross is pitching excellent while Wisler has an xFIP near 4.5 in his starts this season.

1 year and minor numbers don’t get people into the HOF.

3-5 years from now will determine if Preller was wrong or right trading these players.

Furthermore- what ever the Padres get for Kimbrel and Upton factors into that equation 3-5 years from now. If he trades Myers whether high or low that also factors in.

If they hadn’t traded for Upton, they’d have Mallex Smith, who led the minors in steals, as their CF of the future, plus Peterson, and Max Fried (one of their top pitching prosects). Myers and Middlebrooks cost them 2 top 100 prospects (Trea Turner and Joe Ross), their #1 1b in the minors (Jake Bauers), Burch Smith and Rene Rivera. Preller ruined the future of this team for a hope and a prayer. I doubt they receive back half the talent they gave up to get these overpriced, underperforming malcontents.

If he shifts back into full tear-down mode then he has failed because the fans were promised better. If he holds onto the best players he’s acquired and commits to filling more gaps through the free agent market next year then he can claim this as a rebuilding year with more to come. It’s really up to ownership, not the GM to make that call.

I’m not surprised that the Cubs are willing to move Castro. The question is how much trade value does he still have with the bad year he’s in the midst of?

Castro has little-to-zero trade value right now. But I believe this offer says more about how much the Cubs value Cole Hamels than it does about any delusions regarding Castro.

Now forget for a second what Hamels is actually worth, and ask yourself what he’s worth to the Cubs – or any other team looking to deal. That’s the second part of the equation that no one wants to bring up.

There are a number of pitchers on the trade market that are better than Hamels, and a few who have performed at the same level. The market is flooded with rentals that are going to go for rental prices. Why pay full price for Hamels now when you can get someone just as good – or better – for considerably less? That’s just bad business.

The only argument in favor of Hamels is the 3 years of control that he brings with him past this year… But is that really a selling point right now? If I can trade the 30th ranked prospect in a package to acquire 2 months of David Price (which is technically more than market value based on aces being rented since 2012), and then try to sign any number of TOR pitchers in December – why would I give up an elite prospect to get Hamels now? These elite prospects don’t grow on trees, and smart GMs do whatever they can to hold on to them.

The prudent move for GMs is to rent an ace for cheap… then hit the FA market hard in December. Sure, not everyone is going to get Price, Cueto or Zimmerman… and even factoring in Gallardo, Kazmir and Samardzija… there are going to be some teams that don’t satisfy their pitching needs through free agency. Then, and only then, should a team honestly consider giving up an elite prospect for Hamels.

imo, Castro has negative value, meaning the Cubs would have to pay a lot of his salary in order to get anything decent in return. Aside from maybe Alexei Ramirez or Jimmy Rollins, he’s possibly been the worst SS in baseball.

Yeah, he has been awful. Some teams would still be interested because the contract isn’t bad and his career numbers are significantly better, but they’re definitely going to want to pay for his current performance and not his past.

If the Cubs really could get somebody like Hamels with Castro as the headliner, sign me up. But I doubt it, and thus I wonder if it’s not a better idea to hang onto him and see if he can rebuild some value next season.

They’re being so stubborn with Hamels, I can’t imagine they would even go near Castro unless he was a total throw-in. If he is a center piece, I’ma cut someone.

The problem with Castro is that this is the 2nd season out of the last three that he’s been well below replacement level. He’s supposed to be entering his prime and getting better, instead he’s regressing in a pretty big way.

At best, he’s a wildly inconsistent player with a ceiling of 3 WAR. I’m not sure there’s many teams in baseball interested in paying about $43MM over the next 4+ years to a guy who could be decent or could be virtually unplayable. Cubs would need to pony up some money.

As far as a Hamels deal, Castro is a throw-in at absolute best.

That wasn’t so much the point as this: even an acquiring team wouldn’t have to pay him, so why would they ask for anything (though I suppose the Marlins are being asked to buy a prospect, but still… free pitching!)?

I’m not sure since the Marlins technically acquire Haren + Dee Gordon + 10 MM. While 10 MM was exactly Haren’s salary it was just included as added cash.

There was also the possibility that Haren would retire after being traded and deal was structured so Miami would keep the cash even if he retired.

Preller would have had his SS in Trea Turner…not sure if it’s just bad karma or coincidental to trade your first-rounder 6 months after your organization drafted him (granted it was a predecessor GM) only to see Turner reinforce why he was that highly valued. Sure, Myers has had a good year when healthy, but to trade off Turner that quickly just seems unnecessarily impulsive. Factor in Ross, and it looks like we know who won that deal.

The longer Preller remains on the job, the more additional years it will take the Padres to get out of the mess he put them in. (I figure they’re 3 years behind where then were the day he took over)

That owner should not allow him to talk to a veteran successful GM or team president alone. Filters need to be set up on all of Preller’s communication devices to beep the owner and have sirens go off in the Padre offices if he’s talking to Mike Rizzo.

Very true. Preller just seemed to have no respect or regard for the farm system we built up over multiple years. To sell-off a first rounder that quickly is honestly kind of a slap in the face to the scouts and organization that pushed to draft him.

Reminds me of the scene in the movie Draft Day (with Kevin Costner) when the Seahawks want to trade out of the No. 1 pick and are looking for a gullible taker. Who’s the first guy they call?

        “Fleece him.”

That’s what happens with most new Gms though. They don’t value the prospects that the old FO brought in because they might not see the same thing the old GM did. (See Touki Toussant trade)

True, but that trade was more about the D’Backs wanting to get rid of Arroyo’s contract rather than Stewart undervaluing Toussiant. No one would take that contract straight up, so Arizona included Touki to sweeten the pot. It’s an unusual tactic, but one that could make sense for a smaller-market team with a terrible contract. (E.g. I imagine Preller has thought about doing something similar with Melvin Upton’s deal).

That kind of thinking by the Tigers is asinine. What is 6 games against Boston and Tampa going to tell that you that 95 games against the rest of Majors didnt? The team is below .500, and if they can think they wait until July 29th to start making deals, they have another thing coming. You need to start planting seeds now, not in 6 days. I would have been texting the Mets GM all yesterday, after his team blew that game against the Nationals about Cespedes for Steven Matz. If Yoenis plays in that game, the Mets win. Plain and simple. There is only like 3 or 4 teams even willing to take on Price’s salary for the rest of the season. By July 29th, one of those teams will be spending it on Cueto and the other probably on Hamels. You need to be the first to act, not the last.

As for the Yanks, Cashman has a good track record of getting players at the deadline like Prado, McCarthy, and Headley. This year they might just look to tweek the team by bringing up Severino and Judge. They look pretty good right now. One thing for sure the Yanks won’t be sellers, they’re always buyers.

Surprised to hear it’s that “painful” to find a typo here and there — we write, edit, and publish in real time, after all — but as someone who’s spent countless hours agonizing over minor line edits for nearly a decade in the legal world, I guess I can appreciate that.

(As for your comment in another thread, which I could not approve due to its use of a very bad word, I’m not sure why using “former” and “latter” three times in a lengthy article is so offensive to you.
