Royals Exercise Options On Davis, Escobar; Gomes’ Option Declined

By Steve Adams | November 5, 2015 at 2:45pm CDT

The Royals announced on Thursday that they’ve exercised their $8MM club option over Wade Davis and their $5.25MM club option on Alcides Escobar. Veteran outfielder Jonny Gomes had his $3MM club option declined.

It’s a stretch to even say that the Royals faced a decision on either Davis or Escobar, as both of those contract options boiled down to little more than a formality. Each is an extremely affordable and reasonable rate for the value that player brings to the table, and there was never a doubt that either would return. Gomes’ option perhaps required a bit more thought, as $3MM for a platoon outfielder that posted a .371 OBP and a .185 isolated power (slugging minus batting average) against lefties seems at least somewhat reasonable, but Kansas City opted for greater roster and payroll flexibility.

Is Gomes now a potential candidate for the Mariners now? I know OBP is our goal but hey it worked for the Royals

I really have never got how he keeps being targeted. I pray the Os don’t consider him. You said it worked for the Royals but they are dropping him instead of a meazly 3.5 million

Right handed bench power sounds like a really good idea. I’m sure he could be passable at first as a platoon option with Morrison.

I’m also really really high on Gomes. Stand up guy. Great in the clubhouse.

Gomes has never played first base. You can’t just stick people at first base. It doesn’t work like that.

Aprogie, if I want to put Gomes at first, I’m going to put him there. I will actually put him wherever I damn well please.

No, Jonny Gomes has never played 1B in the minors or the majors with any team in his career.

Doesn’t even matter now that Morrison is gone…but your point is well taken.

He could be Knute Rockne in the clubhouse, but he’s still a sub-replacement level player.

You know your teams in a bad state when you hope they pick up Gomes. Yikes!

Gomes hit .167 for KC with an OBP of just .235. Dumping him was an EZ call.

Gomes is the type of player a young Braves team needs. I would love to see him back in a Braves uni, if not as a player then as a coach.
