Jose Fernandez Rumors: 12-8-2015

By Jeff Todd | December 8, 2015 at 4:03pm CDT

We’ve heard persistent rumors that the Marlins could still be willing to listen to trade offers for star righty Jose Fernandez, even if the asking price is incredibly steep. Though president of baseball operations Michael Hill said yesterday that Fernandez is “not available,” the rumors have carried over into the second day of the Winter Meetings.

Here’s the latest:

  • The Dodgers have discussed trying to involve a third team in trade talks for Fernandez, according to Rosenthal (Twitter link).

Earlier Updates

  • Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria says there’s “nothing I am thinking about doing at the moment” with Fernandez, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets.
  • Yankees sources tell Joel Sherman of the New York Post (Twitter links) that the team never offered Severino and isn’t interested in doing so. The club has not held “substantive talks” on Fernandez, per the report.
  • About a dozen clubs have inquired on Fernandez, MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro reports (Twitter links). The Dodgers appear to be the best match, he says, if they’d part with Seager, Urias, and more. Needless to say, that’s a big “if.” The Yankees were willing to give up their best young arm, Luis Severino, per the report, but Frisaro adds that it doesn’t seem New York has enough to give for Fernandez even if it included first baseman Greg Bird.
  • The Giants have also had conversations with Miami about Fernandez, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports. Meanwhile, the Dodgers appear unwilling to involve Corey Seager in any deal but could consider including top pitching prospect Julio Urias in a package.
  • Miami appears to be engaging in discussions on Fernandez more to gauge his future value than to structure a deal right now, Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald writes.
  • A rival executive tells Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter link) that Miami still does not seem terribly willing to part with Fernandez. “They haven’t proposed anything reasonable enough to make people think they want to deal,” said the anonymous source.
  • A source tells Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle (via Twitter) that the Astros aren’t the “mystery team” pursuing Fernandez.
  • There’s a mystery team entering the picture on Fernandez with a “very strong” bid, ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark reports. Sources with “other clubs” tell Stark that the Astros are believed to be the shadowy pursuer. Stark also adds that a deal increasingly seems plausible, with Miami possibly holding off on pursing a Marcell Ozuna deal while the team explores the addition of an outfielder through a trade of Fernandez.
  • As Stark notes in the story, he previously reported that the Dodgers, Diamondbacks, and Yankees have at least contacted the Marlins regarding Fernandez, though Arizona is said to have dropped out of the picture.

If it is Houston, it’s gotta be a massive prospect haul. I wouldn’t think the Stros would trade any of their current major league regulars.

This is gonna be fun to watch.

I could see a McCullers or a Velasquez being traded. My first thought was McCullers, Bregman, and Appel.

appel looks like a bust at this point. Don’t understand why the Dodgers wont unload some talent/ don’t get why their fans are so oppose to trading seager/urias for a cheap, young legitimate stud ace. Fernandez isn’t a “Tanaka” type ace…

i mean, you kind of have to give something up to get something…I think keeping the young talent makes sense for the Dodgers if they concede the season to be somewhat of a retooling where they are competitive, but not exactly championship caliber, think more Dallas Mavericks than Philadelphia 76ers.

Not for a team that prints money. It would devastate a team like the Twins to trade away Buxton and Sano. But the Dodgers would barely notice that loss. They can just spend another $18 billion dollars on the international market in a couple of years to make up for the loss.

Yeah he looks like he might become a bust, but he still has some value. Not as much as you would hope the overall #1 pick would have after 3 years, but he is still a top 100 prospect.

Dodger fans are against it cause we are not stupid enough to trade away their immediate future. We barely recovered from trading Pedro Martinez to the expose

Soler and Torres would be a strong start, but I’m guessing it would have to include a few more of the Cubs top prospects – perhaps Almora AND Edwards. As highly regarded as Soler and Torres both are, that duo really doesn’t hold a candle to the Seager/Urias asking price.

I don’t think that would do it, or even be close. If you are ok with, or like giving up a package for a guy like Fernandez, it isn’t enough. Think what it would take to land Felix in his prime, before all the money. Honestly he is arguably as good or better than Dallas Keuchel.. He will cost more than Cole, Archer, and Kluber.

Fernandez is great but he is definitely a risk given how early in his career he blew out his arm. For that reason I wouldn’t make that trade as the Red Sox. Maybe if they left Espinoza out of it, so he could develop and replace Fernandez in rotation should injury arise down the line.

Yes they do. Judge and Severino are two of the best prospects in the game and could match prospect offers by any team except the Dodgers and maybe one or two others.

That being said, I do agree that that package is light. Other than Judge, there’s not a whole lot compelling there. The Yankees would need to offer Judge, Severino and propbably a third good young piece like Sanchez or Bird. Which they won’t.

There’s Zero chance the yankees trade Severino. He’s 21 and pitched to a sub 3.00 era in the American League. No sense trading one young stud for a better one 2 years closer to huge money.

Mattingly knows the value of a closer. If he wants miller and they love mateo (a sure thing SS prospect) or judge, it could get done. I don’t want to trade miller. Miller pitches every other day; Fernandez only piches every fifth day. Stud closers are worth more to me.

Even then it might take Zunino as well. Alex Jackson hit .200 in single A last year. DJ hit .220 between AA and AAA with only 13 homers. James Paxton is always injured and even at safeco has an era over 3.50. The Mariners simply don’t have the farm. Realistically a conversation should start with Kyle Seager, Taijuan Walker, James Paxton and Alex Jackson.
As much as I’d love Jose Fernandez to come to Seattle it would take all of our top 30 prospects or all our your major leaguers.

You must be a braves fan. Fernandez is better than Shelby Miller, Ozuna is only 23 and has 30 hr power he displayed in 2014. He had a horrific 2015 for himself, yet compared to his peers he was average-ish. Olivera doesn’t have a great contract and is 29 already. Besides that, the Marlins wouldn’t be upgrading anywhere by trading Fernandez for Miller. They would want something that they view will be equal to Fernandez in the future. So that most likely means they would want a pitching prospect like Severino, E-Rod, Urias, Berrios, Glasnow, Matz, etc, as well as another top prospect most likely offensively like Judge, Seager, Devers, Buxton, etc.

    Diamondbacks offer
Patrick Corbin, Archie Bradley, Ender Inciarte, Braden Shipley, Yoan Lopez

    Cubs offer
Javier Baez, Jorge Soler, Kyle Hendricks, Jeimer Candalaerio

    Astros offer
Lance McCuller, Alex Bregman, Kyle Tucker, Mark Appel

    Dodgers offer
Joc Pederson, Julio Urias, Grant Holmes, Peraza, another B prospect

These are the 4 teams I can see making a deal and my idea of fair trades from all teams

I think that the Cubs would accept that pretty quickly. I can’t imagine a trade where Fernandez comes to the north side without us giving up at least one of Russell/Bryant/Schwarber/Torres.

      Definitely a Marlins fan.

The Dodgers aren’t giving up their young starting CF, three top 100 prospects including arguably the most valuable arm in the minors, and a solid B prospect.

This is exactly the type of deal that Cashman will push all=in on…

Yanks — Aaron Judge OF / Jorge Mateo SS/ Carlos Beltran OF (yanks pay 7.5 mill of 2016 salary) / Adam Warren SP / Bryan Mitchell SP

Marlins — Jose Fernandez SP and Martin Prado 2B

Could the royals be that mystery team, it would make sense, they need a starter and they have the prospects to trade, the rotation could be Fernandez, Volquez, Ventura, Medlin, Duffy, if they trade Duffy then Chris Young would be the 5th starter, That’s just an idea and it may not happen but it would be fun just to see

Possible Trade: Bubba Starling,Wade Davis, Danny Duffy, Chestlor Cuthbert going to Miami for Jose Fernandez, Marcell Ozuna and a minor league pitcher

That wouldn’t get it done. It would probably take the royals top 5 prospects considering their weak farm and the Marlins asking price along with Ventura.

One player that they wouldn’t trade would be Raul Mondesi, their #1 prospect, they may trade Ventura but it would be unlikely

That would be way too little for Jose alone, with Ozuna and the pitcher it’s just laughable. Starling and Cuthbert both have very little trade value.

I disagree with that one, Starling and Cuthbert both have trade value, Starling is a power hitting outfielder and Cuthbert is an athletic 2b/3b that can hit for a high average if they don’t have trade value I don’t know who has good trade value

I think a package of Urias, Holmes and Verdugo would be a fair package for Fernandez.

Miami would be getting the Dodgers top prospect in Urias and 3 of the Dodgers top 7 prospects overall (per MLB.com).

This is why young aces with 3-4 years of control left don’t get traded. Their incumbent teams know they can get a great trade offer a year or two later, so they absolutely refuse to settle. Meanwhile, the inquiring team has to basically empty the farm to get the proven commodity.

Not the best of matches, Severino would be held in high esteem but the Marlins already have young middle infielders and corner outfielders and a young 1B and C.. I think it would have to have more arms going the marlins way or a clear cut upgrade like Seager.

The RedSox will get Jose if they want to make an offer. No other team comes close to the players they have. these guys get it done. Moncada, Espinoza, Devers, JBJ, Kelly, and Owens .
boston could end up with Jose and Ozuna.

not really. but they have the names in the minors and depth in the MLB lineup to make a deal. Dodgers can, but will have to offer up Seager and Urias. Astros can, but will have to put together a huge package, and we all know Correa is not going to be in the mix.

Sigh. I love how fans from fan base A who dislike team B try to claim there’s some universal negative trait of the fanbase of team B when the same trait is not present in every fan team B and is in fact present in some part of every fanbase base, team A included.

Astros get Jose, Adeiny Hechavarria, Ozuna, and Mike Dunn

Marlins get Carlos Correa, lance McCuller, Preston tucker, and JD Davis

    Rockies get Jose, Ozuna
Marlins get Blackmon, Brendan Rogers (ptbnl), Jon Gray,Ryan McMahon, and Antonio Senzatela

Here is my Red Sox offer. Not sure if the Marlins would have a ton of appeal for Swihart, but here it goes.

Swihart, Devers, Owens, JBJ, and a lottery ticket for Jose Fernandez.

There is three MLB ready pieces there for Miami, as well as one of the best prospects in the game. Not sure if it is enough, but I don’t think it is too far off if Swihart appeals to them.

Plus they can deal from their wealth of pitching prospects (which is the plan) to gain an MLB ready, or established MLB, hitter.

Not sure how the Giants make a deal without A) trading out the farm system (Arroyo, Beede, Bickford for starters) or B) sending Duffy or Belt as part of the deal. I’m sure they’d want Susac in any case.
