Latest On Rangers And Prince Fielder

By Jeff Todd | December 8, 2015 at 3:02pm CDT

3:01pm: Texas is not “shopping” Fielder, GM Jon Daniels says, as Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram (Twitter links). And a source tells Wilson that the club hasn’t had “any conversations” regarding the veteran slugger.

12:25pm: The Rangers are “surveying” rival teams to gauge the market’s interest in “picking up [the] bulk” of the contract of first baseman Prince Fielder, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports on Twitter. But Texas does not appear to be receiving much indication that there’s much likelihood of finding a match.

With the Tigers carrying $30MM of the remaining burden on Fielder, he’s owed an additional $90MM by the Rangers through 2020. That’s not a monumental obligation for a player of his ability, and there seem to be plenty of teams looking for bats, but it’s not clear what Texas would be looking for in structuring a deal.

Fielder, 31, had a bounceback season for the Rangers last year. He ended the campaign with a .305/.378/.463 slash and 24 home runs after dealing with back issues in 2014. But that’s still a far cry from the huge stats he put up earlier in his career, and Fielder fell off rather noticeably in the second half.

How dumb would it be for the Nats to pick up Fielder and shift Zimmerman to LF?

Pretty dumb because the Nats moved Zimm to first because of his arthritic throwing arm. He can’t play left. Also they already have two corner outfielders.

Could be a good option for the Orioles if they can’t resign Davis. Just not sure they have enough in the farm system to meet what the Rangers would want.

Fielder is owed $120 MM over 5 years and the Tigers are responsible for $30 MM of that amount.

That works out to a $90m/5yr commitment.

      That’s not bad at all.

Depending on how much $$$ the Rangers eat, they could actually net themselves a pretty decent haul of prospects.

With the amount of damage he did to the Astros this year, I wouldnt mind us signing him and letting him sell hot dogs.

Red Sox could use an everyday 1b and maybe eat a little money over the next few years even with David Price’s deal since their core (betts, moncada, Bradley and bogaerts’ deal is relatively cheap). Too bad Pablo and Hanley deals look so bad so soon though

Give Pablo and Hanley one more shot. They are too young to flame out so quickly. I expect them to rebound nicely. They really need to teach both of them how to walk, though.

Duda and 2 prospects. Take on the entire contract

The reason why Fielder is mentioned is that the Rangers are in need of a right handed bat. I do not think Duda would interest the Rangers much given he is left handed, as is Mitch Moreland.

      lol.

Duda’s offensive numbers are similar, his defense is better, and he costs ~$20m less per year. He is also two years younger (29 v. 31).

Duda made $4.2m and is Arb eligible and is a FA in ’18.
Fielder made 24m and will continue to cost that until ’21.

      Duda:: .244 / .352 / .486 /.838…..27HR, 33 2B, 73 RBI….3.0WAR
      Prince: .305 / .378 / .463 / .841…23HR, 28 2B, 98 RBI…1.9WAR

      No thank you.

Rangers get Hanley and his 66M + Kelly

Make it Owens LHP or Johnson LHP instead of Kelly and it might work. Sox have Price, Rodriguez, Owens and Johnson all LHSP. Kelly is needed as the 3rd RHSP for balance.

Maybe some kind of a mid level prospect. This is more of a contract swap and Kelly sweetens the offer as Texas was already interested in him.

My first thiught was Sandoval vut Texas was looking for a RH bat and they Have Beltre at 1B. If they wanna move one across the diamond then the deal would work.

Beltre is at 3B. Moreland plays 1st…Gallo-???

Fielder was the DH for 3/4 of the season.

I don’t expect prince to decline anytime soon, in fact he should improve this year as he gets used to the stamina needed for a full season.

If beltre isn’t retained or begins declining this teams offense would drop dramatically without fielder. Better off trading Moreland or standing pat and pursuing fas

Prince’s number have been on the decline since 2012. The drop off in AVG, SLG, and OPS are pretty dramatic from the 2006-2011 days spent in MIL.

2015 – His batting average was pretty nice but for whatever reason his second half power numbers were no existent. Not to mention, he is a liability at first base.

I think Baseball Lifer has nailed it. While he had a nice season in 2015, he’s not the Prince Fielder of old….he’s an old Prince Fielder with a huge contract and a big belly. He’ll be 32 this year and there seems to be a history of great power hitters having a good bounceback season at age 31 and then the decline starts. That body of his has been carrying a lot of weight for a long time. When he was young…ok. But he’s been in the show 11 years now. He’s strictly a DH. His glove work was never great and he’s slowed up a step or two. His dad, another big body guy, suffered a major drop in production after 11 years and Cecil’s career was over at age 35. The Rangers see history repeating itself and would probably like to dump his contract and add a right handed bat.

Fielder is a name i didn’t’ expect to see available.

Not sure what the Rangers are looking for but the Pirates would love to have his bat at first. Unless injuries are a lingering issue the contract isn’t the worst especially considering the tigers are paying around 25% of it(?).

the thought of having Polanco, Harrison, Cutch, Fielder, Kang, Marte, Cervelli, Mercer as their daily line up…my oh my

sure they probably blew all their pitching money but hey… lol.

If I am the Blue Jays I would definitely look into something round:
    Edwin for Fielder and Tolleson

Rangers get long term salary relief, and a potential draft pick compensation should Edwin not re-sign as a free agent.

Jays get a DH for approx $18 mil/season until 2020, and a high end reliever for cheap

This deal only makes sense if Edwin is looking for an extension at around 4 years $80 million, as Prince is younger and potentially a ‘bargain’ for the new era of baseball salaries. In addition, Prince can potentially hit 40 HR’s+ at the homerdome in Toronto

I’d like to see the Pirates bring in Fielder to fill the 1B hole. Their lineup needs a big bat to bring home the runners, something they’ve been missing since, ever. Cutch and Marte are great hitters but they are missing the power bat in the middle that Alvarez failed to be.
I’d be okay with them trading a decent prospect for him if they can get him for around 12M a season or so.
Trade Walker somewhere so you have the money to spend. The Pirates are going to get left in the dust if they don’t start paying market value in today’s league, practically every team has money to spare.
