Latest On Orioles’ Pursuit Of Bats

By Jeff Todd | December 9, 2015 at 2:20pm CDT

2:19pm: Baltimore is one of several teams to have checked in onĀ Carlos Gonzalez of the Rockies, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com tweets.

12:25pm:Ā Will Venable could also present an option for the Orioles, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets.

10:02am: Baltimore met twice with Scott Boras regarding Davis and have told him that they “soon might pivot” to other options, per Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter links). Meanwhile, Baltimore is “out” on bothĀ Mitch Moreland of theĀ Rangers andĀ Adam Lind of theĀ Brewers.

The O’s also have been looking at 27-year-old Korean outfielderĀ Hyun-soo Kim, a polished hitterĀ who is available as a free agent.

9:39am:Ā TheĀ Orioles met recently withĀ Justin Upton’s agent, Larry Reynolds, as the team continues to pursue power options in free agency, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports on Twitter. Baltimore reportedly made a huge offer to Chris Davis, but seems to be pursuing other avenues as well.

Meanwhile, the club is “hoping” to add a left-handed hitter (possibly in addition to a pitcher) at some point today, Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com reports on Twitter. In theory, at least, that could represent a free agent outfielderĀ as Gerardo Parra orĀ Alex Gordon, a slugging first base/DH option such asĀ Pedro Alvarez, some unknown trade target, orĀ a major move on Davis.

It’s not immediately clear what level of interest the O’s have in Upton, but it could be more of an opportunistic fit than the team’s dogged pursuit of Davis. As Kubatko tweets, the club “won’t pass up impact” regardless whether the hitter acquired is a righty or a lefty. And as MLB.com’s Britt Ghiroli notes on Twitter, executive VP of baseball operations Dan Duquette has said the team will be aggressive rather than waiting to see what Davis decides.

Upton seems like a good fit with the Dodgers if they can trade Puig.

    Finally an Oriole’s rumor!!
However, it is the wrong guy, just like Ollie Williams was at the wrong airport!!!
Anyway, it should be Jason Heyward the O’s are interested in not Justin Upton

You really think Heyward is worth the $$$ premium over Upton? I’m not so convinced.

Pretty sure he is just saying in his opinion it is the wrong guy, not that the report is wrong.

Heyward being a lefty, an A+ defender, and a solid OBP guy is indeed the perfect option for the Orioles needs! More so than Davis even.
That being said, I’m sure the Orioles have kicked the tires but may have been turned off by the price tag or length of contract for Heyward..
For all any of us, (or the contributors to this article), know the Orioles could be targeting Heyward but keeping it close to the vest!

RAT- I know you think statements like “I’m sure you know more than the guys that do it for living.” Sounds clever, but in fact it is childish. The only thing that article contains is the opinions (based on rumors) of some sports writers. When it comes to Winter Meeting reporters quotes, they are generally giving their OPINIONS and they are wrong 99% of the time.

if bal takes alvaez, keep your hair short. so that you can’t grab any with your hands. he can change the game with the swing of the bat or a throw of the ball..

I was hoping they would’ve gotten Alvarez instead of Trumbo, but I don’t see how the Orioles would be able to carry both. You don’t want either of them on the field very much.

BJ Surhoff would be a good fit.

Orioles would save a bunch of money and do a better job long term if they just forget about Davis and sign Alex Gordon and then pitvot to either Carter, or Alvarez as the 1b. Could get either 1b and a superb OF that would give them a outstanding corner OF to team with Jones and probably less than was rumored offered to Davis.

I agree with you Johnsilver that the O’s should be looking for a corner outfielder since Davis will be playing out of position, but they don’t need Carter or Alvarez at 1st since they have Trumbo who is better than either one.

Os won’t get Heyward on that 7yr, $150 contract. He is out of their price range, which is why there aren’t any connections of Heyward to Baltimore.

would be poetic justice of sorts if the O’s told Boras there was a mystery player that was involved.

From Chris Davis to Mitch Moreland to Will Venable… I think Baltimore fans just lost it. At least they have the Ravens… ugh

Khris Davis (Brewers) is probably available. He plays out better with an AL club, he plays LF but is better as just a DH. Cheap, under control through 2019, good offensive production.

It might be easy prying him off of the rebuilding Brew crew.

Now the Oriole’s Brain Trust is at the right airport.
