Latest On Jonathan Lucroy’s Market

By Steve Adams | July 28, 2016 at 7:18pm CDT

JULY 28, 7:11pm: The Mets are believed to be “behind” other organizations in pursuit of Lucroy, Jon Heyman of Fan Rag tweets. But it’s still a “fluid” pursuit for one of the best-available players this summer.

Heyman adds that there’s a mystery team involved. There’s another layer of intrigue here, perhaps, as that could be another report on a solitary, unidentified trying organization — or it may represent the second such unknown entrant to the sweepstakes. (See Crasnick’s report referenced below.)

4:29pm: The Brewers have “re-engaged” with the Mets on Lucroy after New York’s initial offer was reportedly deemed light, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter). That doesn’t mean that the sides are anywhere close to a deal, he cautions, but it seems at least that there’s more to discuss.

3:35pm: Crasnick now tweets that the Astros aren’t believed to be in play for Lucroy, with a source telling him that Houston’s interest was previously overstated.

JULY 27, 7:35pm: The Indians have spoken to the Brewers about both Lucroy and left-handed reliever Will Smith, according to Crasnick (on Twitter). A left-handed reliever has long been said to be one of Cleveland’s top priorities, so the addition of Smith to talks is natural and one that we’ve speculated upon in the past. The 27-year-old Smith was in the mix to be Milwaukee’s closer but suffered a freak knee injury in Spring Training and missed upwards of two months due to a partially torn LCL. He somewhat improbably avoided surgery and is back in the Milwaukee ’pen, with a 3.72 ERA and an 18-to-8 K/BB ratio in 19 1/3 innings. Smith took his game from solid relief arm to lights-out lefty last season when he posted a 2.70 ERA with 12.9 K/9 against 3.4 BB/9 in 63 1/3 innings and is controllable through 2019.

6:10pm: The Brewers’ trade talks surrounding catcher Jonathan Lucroy are picking up, per ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick (links to Twitter). The Indians, Rangers, Mets, Astros and Red Sox have all been mentioned in connection with Lucroy, Crasnick notes, and offers being made by other clubs have become more serious recently. Crasnick adds that the the ever-popular “mystery team” may have entered the mix as well.

While that typically leads to a large amount of speculation, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports may have quickly shed some light on the matter, reporting that the Tigers are a somewhat surprising new entrant into the Lucroy market. He hypothesizes that Detroit could offer James McCann to the Brewers in a similar manner to the Mets’ reported offer of Travis d’Arnaud, though Milwaukee will want more than that in exchange. The Brewers, per Rosenthal, are seeking high-end prospects back in addition to any catcher that is offered in exchange for Lucroy.

While there’s a common belief that Lucroy will indeed be traded prior to the Aug. 1 non-waiver deadline, Rosenthal writes that the Mets feel that Milwaukee is “overreaching” in its asks for Lucroy, while AL West contenders like the Astros and Rangers are more focused on adding pitching depth than a catcher at this time. Houston is also looking at other backstops, he notes, so it’s not a guarantee that even if they move for a catcher, Lucroy would be the target. Meanwhile, MLB.com’s T.R. Sullivan tweets that the Rangers have yet to show serious interest in Lucroy and consider adding a catcher to be a “luxury” at this point, as pitching depth remains their primary focus. Those tweets came prior to Texas’ acquisition of Lucas Harrell and Dario Alvarez from the Braves, but one would assume that those two arms alone have not ended the Rangers’ search for pitching upgrade.

Lucroy, who turned 30 last month, is hitting .301/.362/.486 with 13 homers, 16 doubles and three triples on the season while playing excellent defense. He’s earning a modest $4MM salary in 2016 (of which about $1.46MM remains), and his contract contains an exceptionally affordable $5.25MM club option for the 2017 campaign.

If they don’t get the package they want keep him and look for options in the off season.

Now I haven’t been paying as close attention to the Tigers minor league teams as I usually do and I’m not 100% sure how to value the players but how does McCann, Moya and Burrows sound for Lucroy? McCann is a stud on defense and has shown he can be a good mlb hitter last year, if not for the injuries at the beginning of the year he would be hitting better and he is an incredibly hard worker. Moya needs to work on defense but has legit 40 homer power and has improved on strikeouts. Burrows has been a very good pitcher for the Tigers in the minors and will probably show up on top 100 list. Let me know if this is a decent or terrible trade scenario.

That would be a bad trade for the Brewers. I don’t think the Tigers have the prospects to get a deal like that done. I honestly think it’s just the Brewers saying Tigers are interested to get the Indians to up their offer

As far as what the Tigers can offer McCann, Burrows, and any of their top 4 OF prospects (Moya, Hill, Stewart, Gerber) is not a bad offer. That being said, they don’t have the firepower to out bid Houston, Cleveland, Texas, or Boston if any of them make a push. Even if they don’t, not sure that’s enough to persuade Milwaukee not to just hold on to him and either try to re-up or trade him in the off-season.

To be fair he said a stud on defense. Only 5 PB in 2 years and 41% CS and 52% this year (albeit in a fairly small sample size) does put him in that discussion.

Along with his McCannon of an arm, he has saved so many wild pitches on the part of the Tigers staff. Milwaukee would be in good hands with him behind the plate for the next four years. As to why the Tigers would trade him, you have to give up something of quality to get something of quality. The Tigers pretty much have this year and next before they start losing key pieces of their lineup, and their owner is aging. They might offer more than those other teams, because they are more motivated to, not because they have a deeper system.

Well McCann is a stud on defense and has very nice potential on offense for a catcher. I don’t really want to trade him but this is the Tigers last shot at a WS with this core. Lucroy is better than McCan now.

With today’s update on MLB pipeline, they do now: #81 Matt Manning. Though I doubt he would be in play after just drafting him. Maybe McCann, Moya, and another non-Jimenez pitching prospect like Ziomek

Where did McCann show he could be a good hitter? He has NEVER had an OBP above .300 in the majors. His defense is average at best. Moya is also below .300 OBP in the minor leagues. Burrows is a #1 pick and a decent start to the deal.

Minor league success and a decent BA as a rookie that should be improved in. His defense is definitely gold glove level, just watch him. Moya has made some huge improvements in the minors hi year

The Brewers have told the Mets they are uninterested in Rosario. They already have one of the top SS prospects in Arcia and they have Villar doing very well at Milwaukee. Plus they have two or three very good SS prospects in the minors. They are looking for pitching, not SS.

I just hope the Brewers don’t trade him for catchers that aren’t even as good as Maldonado!! In order to get Lucroy the team better be giving up a top of the line prospect. If not then trade him in the off season but I think that someone will pay what the Brewers want. McCann and D’Arnaud should not be the center piece in a trade. There is a reason why the Mets and tigers want Lucroy.

Yes, both the Tigers and Mets are competing during Lucroys contract. Milwaukee is unlikely to. As a Tigers fan, I would like to see them keep McCann, but I realize that Lucroy is the better of the two, currently. In three years, tho, Lucroy will be elsewhere and McCann will be much improved.

McCann and D’Arnaud are horrible and the Brewers would be insane to trade for either of those two for Lucroy. If they aren’t getting top tier prospects then hold on to him until they do. Otherwise let him walk and take the compensation pick. In order to get Jonathan Lucroy a team is going to have to pay for it.

D’arnaud has had 2 seasons and hasn’t figured out how to hit, nor catch yet. He’d be a decent backup for some team, but not a starter.

Mets fans thinking he’s worth a full season of one of the better ones in the game are just wrong. Can’t think of why Boston is looking at him tho. Sure.. Leon has been a fluke with the bat, but his glove have always been solid and he has always had a cannon arm and the unfortunately sent Vazquez to the minors, who has an even better glove and arm than does Leon.

Hannigan is as good as is D’arnaud, only is 35YO, is guaranteed 3m this year why C-Vaz went down. They don’t need another bat in Lucroy with the game’s top offense as it is.

I get that D’Arnaud isn’t going to land Lucroy, but you are just wrong about his bat. . He had a .825 OPS last year, which I believe put him 2nd among catchers- he’s figured out how to hit. Even his .defensive issues are overrated. No, his real problem is he hasn’t figured out how to stay healthy.
Even so, it’s laughable to suggest that he’s just a “decent backup”; he’s a starting caliber catcher at the major league level, you just better have an actual “decent backup” as well, because the backup is likely to play more games that D’Arnaud.

Why would the Brewers want to trade away a healthy All-Star catcher for a catcher with this problem? I’m not trying to trash talk his potential, but can we agree that there is no reason for him to even be in any deal besides the fact that the Mets want to deal him, and think the Brewers should magically view him as valuable to their organization. At this point, he’s still on a rehab assignment and can’t even take over for Lucroy… Fortunately, the Brewers already have a fill-in ready at AAA that’s currently slashing .341/.382/.524 on the year.

          .825OPS / 125 OPS+….”he hasn’t figured out how to hit”? This numbers don’t jive.

Yes he has injuries. Yes he is having a down year. However, he has multiple years of control and has shown he has a bat. He is working on his arm, while also being one of the best pitch framers in the league.

          johnsilver,

I actual watch every Met game and a quite a few other MLB/MiLB games on a regular basis.

Again, I’ll bring statistics into the conversation; I’m sorry if the numbers go over your head, but this is how adult baseball fans engage in discourse (that means debate).

          TD (AA): .303 / .362 / .530 / .892
          JL (AA): .284 / .394 / .426 / .820

          TD (AAA): .339 / .407 / .622 / 1.029
          JL (AAA): .253 / .286 / .368 / 654 (albeit a small sample size)

Here are the stats for 2015-2016 (MLB)
          TD (MLB): ..260 / .327 / .433 / .760
          JL (MLB): .281 / .343 / .436 / .779

TD has 3 more years of control than JL, which is why a 1:1 was the opening offer. It should take more because TD is having a down year, but even with a down year he matches up favorably to Lucroy because of the 3 years of additional control.

I’m not a Mets fan, but to say that Hannigan is as good as is D’arnaud well your just a little dilusional friend, He’s 35YO and was washed up as a starter when he was with Tampa Bay. And, C-Vaz doesn’t deserve a nickname with the game he brings which was why Dave sent him down.

Swihart’s value is firmly tied to if he can stay behind the plate or not, which has really come into question. If Milwaukee doesn’t see him there he becomes an average corner OF. For a package of Lucroy and one of the relievers I think Milwaukee starts with Devers and some more pieces. They don’t necessarily need a catcher in return. They have 2 guys hitting well at AAA and could always find a serviceable guy in free agency until Nottingham is ready.

Devers has greatly improved his defense. Has a .974 fielding percentage this year and has the arm to stick at 3B. Only question is his range and if he can keep his weight down. If he can’t he may have to move to 1B, which is still a position of need for the Brewers.

To be fair to Swihart, he struggled the most catching Wright, as do many catchers. Swihart was maybe a second piece in the deal, not a headlining guy. Just threw him out as part of the package to give Milwaukee someone to throw behind the plate in the short term. They could also use another reliever and a SP. Catcher is probably their third biggest problem (behind starters and relievers) but those are really the only three problems to address. And maybe left field.

The Brewers don’t have to trade him if teams aren’t going to pay. There is a reason the Mets and tigers want Lucroy!! Maldonado is just as good as either of those catchers. Brewers need top prospects and nothing short of that. A team will eventually step in and give the Brewers what they want. Lucroy is a great addition to any team and will be missed in Milwaukee but it’s business.

What makes you say his hitting will come around? He’s been as poor of a hitter in the Majors as he was in the Minors – doesn’t even crack a .700 OPS in his MiLB career.

As an Astros fan I cannot figure out why the front office is chasing pitching over hitting. Their pitching has been one of the best over the last month or so. The problem is the offense when you start Rasmus, Gomez, Gattis, Castro and Marisnick and none of them are above .230. Lucroy and Bruce should be their top targets. Hitting is what will keep them out of the playoffs.

There’s no reason for the Astros to trade for Lucroy while Jason Castro is on the roster. I think this is a smoke screen so that Rangers will bite.

I hope we don’t trade him to Astros. Even though Stearns knows their system, he has done enough business with them and needs to make trades with other clubs. Please no deals with Mets. Or maybe do a deal with Mets then fail a player on his physical when buyer remorse happens ala Carlos Gomez deal last year. Worked out fine, but still screw the Mets front office.

On 105.7 the Fan it was reported Stearns was asking for a teams number 1 prospect and 2 mid level prospects for Jeffrees alone. I can’t wait to see what Lucroy brings back. This is going to be the trade that defines Stearns career here in Milwaukee.

Don’t get me wrong with my comments, Lucroy is a good talent, but part of his success comes from playing at Miller park. Although Milwaukee is no Colorado, Baltimore or Toronto the park is a hitters park. Lucroy has hit 70 percent of his hr at home this year. He’s hitting 20 points higher at home as compared to the road. More rbis and more runs scored at home. Trading him to a pitchers park like Detroit would likely put a hit on his numbers. Like I said he is a good talent, but people are wanting returns like he was Piazza in his prime.

The career numbers would suggest otherwise.
      2013- .274/.338/.444 11 2B 9 HR at home .286/.341/.465 14 2B 9 HR road.
      2104- .307/.381/.440 19 2B 6 HR home .295/.365/.487 34 2B 7 HR road
      2015- .207/.290/.337 7 2B 3 HR home .312/.357/.436 13 2B 4 HR road.
Til this year he’s actually been better on the road.

For his career, Lucroy has an OPS of .789 at home, and .770 on the road. Remarkably consistent.

It’s a bit rough to say he’s hit 70% of his home runs at home this year, when your sample size is all of 13.

Lucroy is a prime case of not having extreme home and away splits.

I don’t understand your point. Yeah he’s batting 20 points lower on the road but he’s still batting
.291. Most players hit lower on the road compared to at home. Trout is hitting 40 points lower on the road compared to home. Does that mean he’s a product of his home park?

I don’t suppose you’ve bothered to see how far back into the stands his dingers land? When he connects it’s gone in any park. He shouldn’t be that strong for his size but he makes great contact.

And rightfully so. He’s a controllable catcher for all of 2017 at a bargain basement price that can also play 1B in a pinch. If the team that trades from him this year doesn’t compete in 2017 he becomes another trade piece. The team can regain some of the prospects they lose this year

Lucroy’s bat actually translates well to Comerica. In 2014 he broke the record for doubles in a single season by a catcher, previously held by none other than Pudge Rodriguez. A gap to gap hitter would benefit from a “larger” ballpark like Comerica

I’m gonna say the Nationals are the ever popular mystery team. Could use another bat (albeit should focus on a closer more), but even though Ramos is signed through 2017 (same as LuCroy) they could always use him at first when Ryan Zimmerman inevitable gets hurt again. Plus they are running Ramos into the ground this year, since Lobton can’t hit his way out of a paper bag, and this would be a way to get Ramos extra rest down the stretch without having an automatic out from the position on the offensive end.

They are going to get the best deal, whether it be midnight on July 28, 10 AM on July 30, 3:59 on August 1, or on December 25. Teams that miss out on him and then Norris should blame themselves if they can’t upgrade because Norris is available.

He’s a very, very good ballplayer but it’s possible the market isn’t as strong for him as many of us think it should be.

It seems like some of the teams that would have to give up promising assets for this guy are prioritizing other needs, like starting pitching and shutdown relievers.

If the Brewers are feigning interest in a deal with the Mets though, I wonder if other teams will start to bid. Surely the Rangers, Red Sox, and Indians could offer better chips than the mets?

Go for it Alderson. Here me out seven line army:

    Mets: C Lucroy
    RHP Jeffress

    Brewers: C D’Arnaud
    OF Nimmo
    1B D. Smith

Mets need another arm in the bullpen, Brewers need building pieces for the future. Lucroy wants to play for a contender. Duda is the future, along with potentially Lucroy. The last time the Mets traded for an all star catcher he wound up in Cooperstown, congrats Mike. OF and 1B are more congested then C for Mets. Smith can be the future in Milwaukee at 1B. Nimmo will be an above average everyday OF. Gotta think about Cespedes’ option after the season, plus Lucroy has one more year of control. Only untouchables are Herrera, and Rosario. #LGM

Teams looking for a catcher should check with the Yankees. They still seem interested in shedding payroll and if they go all in sell, perhaps McCann could be had. They’ve already got Sanchez waiting in the wings at AAA. They might be interested in shedding McCann’s remaining salary and years and get younger behind the dish

Think zobrist would be good comp trade last year, and A’s got maneaa and Aron Brooks. Maneaa was top 10 and Brooks was lottery, for 1 yr rental. Same type player, good hit, decent pop, but lucroy has cheap extra year control.

Thinking return return for lucroy from Indians should be one of Frazier/summer/Bradley, Francisco Mejia, and low level prospect.

Want Smith too? Either mckenzie/Hillman and another low level prospect.

One mystery team could be the Braves. They are in the market with AJ a FA at yard end and Tyler Flowers as a back up. They have been linked to Cervelli and Weiters, but with that former extended by the Pirate and the later to command big money, they Braves may surprise by making a deadline deal for either Lucroy or Norris. Lucroy would be an ideal target to work with their baby Braves pitching staff while providing another solid bat in a currently weak lineup.

I think the Mariners may be considering a crack at Lucroy, they are surely thinking win in 2017 at least, maybe give up Paxton, Zunino and Oneill to get him, thinking outside the square, he is a clear upgrade. Paxton is a steep price but pitching prospects are on the horizon like Yarborough and Parker, probably set for promotions some time next season.

My guess is that this deal gets done. It just makes too much sense for both clubs not to. I also think Will Smith ends up being part of the deal in the end as he fits in with the Indians needs and pay structure.

It is likely that Milwaukee will demand at least two Top 100 prospects in return for Lucroy and Smith. Cleveland is reported to be very hesitant to part with Frazier or Zimmer. Assuming they are untouchable, how does this sound?

    Cleveland gets:

    Jonathan Lucroy
Will Smith (the LHP, not the actor)

    Milwaukee gets:

Brady Aiken (LHP, #79 overall prospect)
Justus Sheffield (LHP, #95 overall prospect)
Francisco Mejia (C, #5 catching prospect)
    Nolan Jones (3B)
    Triston McKenzie (RHP)

This deal allows the Indians to avoid dealing 3 of their top 4 prospects. From Milwaukee’s perspective, they would be getting 5 of Cleveland’s top 10 prospects, all 20 years or younger at positions of need and several with significant upside. This is in line with what Stearns is trying to accomplish.

Thoughts? As a Brewers fan, am I reaching too much or is this close to being a balanced deal? I could see Milwaukee including a couple of their own prospects in a deal such as this and as always I’m sure there will be a few lottery tickets involved.

Uhhh this deal is awful for the Brewers. If the Brewers accepted this I would be pissed. The deal for Aroldis Chapman, a closer as a half year rental is comparable to this but you want to give them Lucroy and Smith and we don’t get a single top 75 prospect? I’m pretty sure if this was the deal Stearns would have made it months ago.

Every news source has said there has been no talks of extension. There is no point of a verbal agreement unless it’s pending medicals or something. If Chapman agreed to just a verbal agreement that means he likes the Cubs offer but still want to see what the market has to offer in free agency. Which basically means there is no extension

Plus it sounds like he didnt want to leave the jankees to begin with. Its the jon Lester situation. The janks lowballed Chapman so they traded him. Now he’s with a good team. Giving up only 2 prospects isn’t bad of they turn it to 5 years.
