SEPT. 13, 10:49pm: Valencia’s roster spot isn’t at risk now, but he is unlikely to return for 2017, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. She notes that it’s unclear whether he could be traded or non-tendered.
12:46pm: MLB.com’s Jane Lee hears differently, reporting that Valencia is likely to remain with the A’s through at least the end of the season. While Valencia and fellow veteran/University of Miami product Yonder Alonso will lose some at-bats to rookies Matt Olson and Renato Nunez, they’ll both still remain in the mix for at-bats down the stretch.
SEPT. 11: The A’s released designated hitter Billy Butler today, and another veteran could soon be following Butler out of Oakland. The Athletics are likely to release Danny Valencia before the end of the season, sources tell Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. Valencia is eligible for arbitration for the third and final time this winter, though cutting him sooner rather than later would give both he and the team a clean break rather than waiting until the non-tender deadline.
It has been apparent for weeks that Valencia was unlikely to be with the A’s in 2017, as he was rumored as a possible DFA candidate in July since he wasn’t getting any trade deadline interest. Valencia’s playing time was also reportedly going to be cut, though he played in 27 games in August and seven of Oakland’s nine games thus far in September. It could simply be that the A’s didn’t feel comfortable benching Valencia when his 121 wRC+ led the team; after today’s action, Valencia is hitting .289/.346/.458 with 18 homers over 445 plate appearances in 2016.
Valencia’s strong production in three of the last four seasons and his multi-position versatility at third, first and both corner outfield spots (though defensive metrics indicate his glovework is only serviceable at first and right field) should get him attention on the free agent market this winter. If the A’s do release him before the season is over, it’s even possible that Valencia could catch on with a contending team looking for some late-season pop to boost them into the playoffs. Valencia wouldn’t himself be eligible for the postseason, of course, since he’d be joining a team past the September 1 deadline.
Valencia, who turns 32 later this month, has already played for six different teams during his seven years in the majors, and rumors of clubhouse problems have followed him throughout his career. Teammates such as Yonder Alonso, however, have also defended Valencia’s reputation. Slusser notes that Valencia “is known as a hard worker” within the Athletics clubhouse, while Butler’s work habits (particularly a lack of time in the weight room last season) were questioned by teammates. Valencia and Butler are linked, of course, by their infamous clubhouse altercation last month that led to both players being fined and Butler spending time on the DL recovering from a concussion.

Angels please sign him
HaloShane
Dude has personality, won’t happen.
angelsfan4life
And play him where?
FOmeOLS
He’s a good 1B and can DH or RF, though he’s not very good defensively.
angelsfan4life
The Angels already have Marte Cron and Pujols to play first and DH. As for right field, Calhoun is there, and they will have better options this offseason for a left fielder, rather than bring in a bad club house guy.
bradthebluefish
Personalities are the last thing the Angels should consider with that trash pile they call a team.
julyn82001
Hard to understand this one… This is a performing player… It’s ludicrous…
pileofsandwich
Because being a cancer out does performing. He has been cut and DFA quite a bid even though performing.
anonymoususer
And for a team like the A’s, personality is worth much more than performance right now.
A'sfaninUK
He had an .838 OPS with Toronto when they cut him last season, this is nothing new for the guy.
jsloan
Because nobody wants him
baseballfan22_
Angels won’t sign him 🙂
HaloShane
Concur. Guy has to much personality to be a Halo.
angelsfan4life
That and where would he play? They Angels have the guy who will be playing third next year already. He is worse than Trumbo playing the outfield. The Angels have a log jam at first base and DH.
TheMichigan
It’s odd how he’s producing like this but their going to release him? It makes zero sense and there is something going on backstage, there has to be. No competent organization benches a guy batting .289 with a .349 OPB, you just don’t do that, let alone cut him. I can understand benching and releasing Billy Butler because he was terrible at his job.
A'sfaninUK
The Jays did the exact same thing to him.
jd396
There is ALWAYS something going on backstage with this guy, and there always has been.
kent814
One reason why the As suck. They release all their good players
natsfan3437
Or trade them away for nothing
arc89
Gee 2 years with a record under .500 and you think they suck? Its called a rebuild season so why not get rid of players that will be gone next season. Valencia can’t play defense and has a bad attitude. I would rather have a team rebuild than a team that rather keep old players and still miss the playoffs.
hotdoug5638
Why didn’t they trade him.makes no sense
Dookie Howser, MD
Because nobody wanted him.

Good move by Oakland, even though he’s a great hitter, he’s a perennial clubhouse cancer and a loser.
tsolid 2
Just another fan, if playing in the big leagues 7yrs, hitting .289 18hrs this year makes someone a LOSER, I’ll take it, over being a guy that constantly post insulting comments online. Look in the mirror Big Fella.
JKurk22
Glad someone finally said it.
A'sfaninUK
Big fella? I’m 140 lb soaking wet.
He’s a loser because he is privileged enough to be able to play this game and be good at it, yet he can’t respect his teammates or front office enough to stay with a team no matter how good he plays….that is what a loser is and I’m sorry you cannot see that you can be a good performer and a loser too, Curt Schilling and AJ Pierzynski are perfect examples of this.
Sid Bream
How many games of baseball at any level have you played?, and you’re calling Schilling and Pierzynski losers?
24TheKid
I don’t think he was calling you fat. He meant that you try and act big by your comments. You kind of proved his point by stating your light weight.
A'sfaninUK
OMG please understand that “loser” is about personality, not talent.
Also the whole “you never played therefore he’s a better person than you” line of thought is absolute garbage, you can knock that right off – we are here to talk baseball not play it.
A'sfaninUK
Lol how am I “acting big” in a comments section, its just words !!!
You guys are hilarious!
tsolid 2
Talkin baseball and making asinine statements are too different things. Calling people “LOSERS” isn’t talking baseball, no matter what you say. You being 140lbs soaking wet only proves that you are a “internet tough guy” that likes to throw out insults, and call it “Talking Baseball”
arc89
Funny how these people defend Valencia but do not understand that the A’s tried to trade him and not 1 team made a offer. Beane would have traded him for a A ball prospect but still not even a nibble. Yes he can hit but he reputation as a club house cancer has not even 1 team wanting him. Just look at it this way even Crisp is tradeable and his hitting is not what it used to be.

I think you would be hard pressed to find any teammates of Schilling or AJ that didn’t get along with them. Schilling can be a blowhard and airs his opinions like they are informed or matter; AJ is a jerk to opponents, but his teammates always seemed to be OK with him.
comebacktrail28
AJ Pierzinski won everywhere he went in the Beginning of His Career ….. Being a White Sox fan I used to hate him when he was on Twins ……. When he came over to white Sox he was one of my Favorite players and I’m sure a lot of Twins and I know White Sox fans still love Him . To compare him to Danny Valencia is a Joke AJ was a Winner and Clutch
rycm131
Is that confirmed? Not saying it’s not, but we traded Coco Crisp for a guy who it’s hard to imagine is still playing baseball professionally. It’s hard to imagine that it’s being said Valenica would be signed quickly by another team, but not one was willing to give up the type of prospect we got for Coco (who the A’s may not of even picked up at the airport, not sure if he is on any of the teams presently?)

The big man is back at it again with the loser comment.
start_wearing_purple
He seems like the kind of guy who just needs the right clubhouse rather than being labeled as a clubhouse cancer. The incident with Butler was more of a jerk move by Butler and if Butler hadn’t been injured then most of us probably wouldn’t have heard about the incident. He’ll get an offer, even if it’s just a ST invite to prove he can play well with others.
pd14athletics
I feel like Oakland was that place. He’d gone out publicly earlier in the year talking about how much he liked it here. Also teammates prior to fight had gone out of their way to say they back him basically. He even seemed to take the lose in playing time well, even though ultimately he ended up playing quite a bit. I bet he has interest teams just didn’t want to give up much of anything for him in case he doesn’t fit in their clubhouse. It’s one thing to have a guy not mesh and not perform that you got off waivers and you can just release. But if you give up anything of value for him you look like an idiot. That’s my take.
rugrat907
You also don’t want to give up anything of value for a guy you are likely to non-tender because he’ll be due a decent sized raise in arbitration. He made a little over $3 million this season, and with his offensive numbers it wouldn’t be out of line to see something in the $6 million range in arb. That’s too much for a guy with his issues defensively and with his clubhouse rep, whether it’s deserved or not.
A'sfaninUK
This is a perfect summation.
notagain27
He will get a offer because other teams believe they can handle this guy’s makeup issues. Seven clubs have already tried, a few more couldn’t hurt. The A’s could have traded him but couldn’t find any takers. You just can’t go into battle each night with a selfish teammate like Valencia. He wears a team down over the coarse of the season with his antics, not worth the headaches.
Niekro
Could be decent fit to replace Prado if the Marlins don’t bring him back and if Dietrich can’t handle 3B.
FOmeOLS
Danny Valencia is a good player. Butler sucks and will never play again. Meanwhile, valid or note, the clubhouse issues will merely drive Valencia’s price down and he’s going to get picked up by some happy club ten minutes after he’s released, if he is.
The As should keep him as a DH/1B.
Releasing a solid player would be yet another in a long string of really bad moves by Beane.
OaklandAsbaseball
What really bad moves? The Rich Hill signing? Trading Rich Hill and Reddick for three starting pitchers two with ace level stuff? Or somehow turning a Loogy into a good prospect? I’m confused by all the bad moves?
FOmeOLS
You’re easily confused.
Go talk to Josh Donaldson.
Or Billy Butler.
OaklandAsbaseball
Billy Butler has been a bad signing but even so how has the Donaldson trade truly bad? We have a guy who likely going to be a top 5 player at whatever position he ends up and 2nd or 3rd starter in Gravemen? Want to talk about a great trade how about the trading the Shark to the whitesox? Or getting Triggs who has extremely impressed as a starter.
notagain27
Doubt a playoff team picks him up if he were released at this instant. Playoff teams can’t risk a player with his known clubhouse issues to cause any potential rifts during the stretch run. I agree with a previous poster that mentioned these issues will drive his value down but he will sign with someone willing to take a risk.
A'sfaninUK
Its September 14, he literally can’t do anything to effect a clubhouse right now. Plus he has as more fans within his peers than he does detractors. Lots of big names came to his aid after the Butler incident.
Now Billy Butler, there’s a true clubhouse cancer if there ever was one.
AngelFan69
ANGELS… HERE WE COME!!!
angelsfan4life
And play him where? This is the third time posting that same question on here. The Angels have a younger cheaper option for third base for next season. The Angels have Marte Cron and Pujols for first base and DH. And he makes Trumbo look like a gold glove outfielder he is so bad.
A'sfaninUK
All this, he does not belong on the Angels or A’s.
Some realistic, sensible landing spots for him:
Yankees
Rays
White Sox
Maybe the Orioles and Blue Jays, depending on how the hot stove season pans out.
I think the smartest move for Oakland would be to not mention him to other teams until late March/early April, then wait for injuries to open up more options for him, the longer removed from the Butler incident the better he would look, especially to a desperate team..
stymeedone
In Billy Butler”s case, the reason to DFA him is to cut him to allow someone who is better to play the position. Poor results and poor work habits contributed to the decision.
In Danny Valencia’s case, the reason to DFA him is to either remove a cancer from the club house, or (and I favor this one) remove re-signing restrictions from a versatile player who is having a good year, but is not good enough to go to arbitration with.
A'sfaninUK
Or it could be as simple as to remove a guy who’s 32 next year from a youth movement.
Phillies2017
I find it hard to believe that nobody wanted an affordable, versatile, middle of the order bat regardless of personality. I just don’t see it. The A’s must have showed their cards early
A'sfaninUK
He is really, really, REALLY bad defensively. He’s a DH/1B at this point – A’s got too many better options there.
julyn82001
A’s are in a clear rebuilding motion… They will need a couple of veterans next years to sort of stabilize their lineup… I would keep both Valencia and Alonso as insurance players…
