Marlins Will Not Retain Barry Bonds As Hitting Coach

By Jeff Todd | October 3, 2016 at 4:57pm CDT

The Marlins have decided to part ways with hitting coach Barry Bonds, as Jon Heyman of Fan Rag reports. This was his first season in that role, which he shared with Frank Menechino.

Bonds’s time in Miami seemed to go rather smoothly from the outside, but it appears that the arrangement may not have worked out quite as hoped behind closed doors. Manager Don Mattingly “called out” Bonds at some point in the middle of the year, after which time the latter’s “commitment level dwindled,” per Craig Mish of MLB Network Radio (via Twitter).

The major league lifetime leader in home runs for a career and for a single season, Bonds came to Miami in hopes of reclaiming a place in the game. He had seemingly been frozen out of Major League Baseball after his career with the Giants wrapped up following the 2007 season. At the time, Bonds still represented a fearsome presence at the plate, but was viewed as a major symbol of the steroid era.

It appears as if owner Jeffrey Loria was the chief supporter of Bonds, as Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports (Twitter links), but some players also viewed him favorably. Ultimately, it was Mattingly who seemingly drove the decision to make a change.

Bonds isn’t alone in departing the Marlins’ staff. Third base coach Lenny Harris and bullpen coach Reid Cornelius have also been cut loose, per Andy Slater of 940 AM WINZ (via Twitter).

Cheap skate Loria….. didn’t want the added expense of ordering extra large hats for Mr. Bonds.

Bonds turns out to be a Putz, and Donnie’s staff goes through a major turnover after the first year? What a surprise.

Giants need to sign Bonds as a hitting couch or bench couch and have him back in the organization.

As anemic as their offense was during the second half, I’d say that wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Bonds did a good job with the Marlins. Many players improved from last years. Sad to see him go.

Well, looking at the year’s splits there was a clear decline in the Marlins offense over the year so Mattingly may have a point.

Yes but im sure all of that decline was because of Stanton’s bad season and Dee Gordon’s PED suspension

That’s a shame, it was great to have Barry back. He’s been an exemplary citizen since he left the game, and it was kind of cool to see him back to being skinny with a normal sized head again.

As someone who was never a fan of Bonds, I actually agree. He did a candid interview for Sportsnet back in I think spring training with one of the Jays analysts and his take on his career and run ins with the media were rather interesting.

vote bonds in! with many of the former users getting into hall of fame and one fatty with even bigger head cheered for, bonds, who has never been tested positive while using steroids was against mlb regulations, should go in!
for those who’d argue using steroids was illegal, it was illegal for ruth to drink while he was playing. many, if not majority of hall members used something illegal-amphetamines, greenies and steroids.

All of the guys they say used steroids should be in the hall of fame! A writer in California was hushed by baseball in the late 80’s and lost his job for writing a piece on baseball players using! Owners all knew if was going on and did nothing! After the strike baseball was dying and in 1998 McGwire & Sosa brought baseball back! Pitchers used to and we all know who they are! Bonds, McGwire, Sosa, Clemens, Pettite, Schilling, Canseco etc… All deserve to be in the hall! I believe Rickey Henderson used and hes in the hall, Guarantee theres players in the hall that used! On another note Pete Rose needs to be in as well!

Pete would have been in if it weren’t for his lies for all of those years.

My guess is that he bet on games he player/managed and had the ability to change the outcomes of those games?

If my guess is true, the only hall he belongs in is his own hallway endorsing shoes.

Bonds was one of the greatest players ever in the game BEFORE steroids.

He became inhuman after. It’s a shame he will never be in Cooperstown.

Hopefully Donnie will hire Chuck Crim, his former bullpen coach with the Dodgers…on the inside the pitchers loved this guy, his teaching methods, etc. Would really help the Marlins young pitchers – was a big help to Kenley Jansen for years.

Don mattingly is a “see you en tee”.
Hes a dodger for life and the only guy who had a problem with Bonds. Its ok id love to see him back in SF since hes the reason I got into baseball as a kid. Chances are your favorite player from that era “cheated” too (even though it wasnt against the rules of the MLB). 85% tested positive before the ban was initiated.

Mattingly a Dodger for life? What?

He played all of his 14 years for NYY – coached there afterwards, and only then came over to the Dodgers for for 7 or 8 years total (5 managing) because he was Joe Torre’s sidekick. Then he got shown the door.

He is not a Dodger for life.

It always amazes me when fans fail to realize that the objective is to win games. All these star ex-players – Bonds, Ventura, Matt Williams, Walt Weiss, Sandberg, et al – didn’t win. That’s it. End of story. So…they gone!

It’s interesting that only one person had a problem with Bonds.

And that one person was the source of some turmoil in his previous job.

Ex-players like Bonds and Manny Ramirez trying to change their “image” by coming to the forefront and being seen as “good guys” in a pathetic attempt to get elected into the HOF.. Bottom line is, I doubt many of the players had an ounce of respect for this guy. They probably looked at it as a novelty last spring, but really….who wants advice from someone who had to cheat?
