Central Notes: Pirates, Cardinals, Twins

By charliewilmoth | November 23, 2016 at 8:40pm CDT

The Pirates have not discussed an extension with manager Clint Hurdle, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review writes. “How long will I go? I don’t know the shelf life,” says Hurdle. “I just know that I’m still engaged. I love what I do, I love who I’m doing it for, and I love who I’m doing it with. I’ll take it one year at a time.” There’s no indication Hurdle’s job is in danger, and he’s signed through 2017 with an option for 2018. Interestingly, though, Biertempfel notes that whenever Hurdle’s tenure with the Pirates does come to an end, there’s a good chance he could be replaced internally, with new bench coach and former Double-A skipper Tom Prince as a possible replacement. “We hope Clint manages the Pirates for a long time,” says Pirates president Frank Coonelly. “But, like with any other key leadership position, we want to be sure we’re developing successors. We have a bias toward promoting from within when possible, but we also have a bias toward hiring the best person for the job. If we develop our people the right way, they’ll be the best people for the job.” The Bucs already recently did develop another top big-league manager — former Bucs bench coach Jeff Banister was the 2015 AL Manager of the Year with the Rangers. Here’s more from the Central divisions.

  • Four-year deals for relievers are demonstrably dicey propositions, so it’s unclear why the Cardinals committed to Brett Cecil for that long, ESPN’s Keith Law writes (Insider only). Cecil was worth roughly $7.5MM per year (the annual value of the contract he just received) in 2013 through 2015, but it’s optimistic to expect him to be worth that several years from now, given the uninspiring histories of relievers who’ve received long-term deals (B.J. Ryan, Justin Speier, Joe Nathan, Steve Karsay, and so on).
  • Cardinals fans would be unwise to read too much into the news that the team has mentioned Michael Wacha’s name in trade talks, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch writes in a series of questions and answers about the Cards’ offseason plans. The Cardinals might simply be trying to gauge Wacha’s value, as they did in previous discussions about pitchers like Shelby Miller and Kyle Lohse.
  • Law praises the Twins for dropping Trevor Plouffe, on the grounds that his underwhelming defense makes him approximately replacement level. Law says he is curious to see whether the Twins will now turn to Miguel Sano at third base, since he is heavy for the position and has not been a good defender at the position throughout his career. (UZR and DRS rated Sano around average in 376 big-league innings at the position in 2016.)
  • The Twins have been in contact with free agent righty Justin Masterson, Mike Berardino of the Pioneer Press tweets. That’s not surprising, since new Twins head of baseball operations Derek Falvey previously worked with Masterson in the Indians organization. Masterson, formerly a solid big-league starter, had an underwhelming 2016 in the Bucs organization while fighting his way back from shoulder trouble, posting a 4.85 ERA, 6.1 K/9 and 4.4 BB/9 in 59 1/3 innings covering two minor league stops.

Not a Twins fan, but I’m such a huge fan of Trevor Plouffe even if he has been hovering around the replacement level type. Would love to see him on a West Coast team where he’s from. Could see Dodgers, Angels, Padres or Giants taking a chance on him as a 3B/1B/LF part time guy.

He’s a good guy to help fill out a roster for sure.

Thing is he hasn’t been hovering around replacement level. Last year he had injuries and struggled but the two previous years he worth about 2-3WAR each season. Same with his defense, it’s graded out as average or slightly above 2 of the last three seasons. Just some odd takes in this piece. He will be a solid pickup for whoever signs him with the ability to provide plenty of surplus value.

Clint is a great motivator, but motivators tend to fall on deaf ears after a certain point. He seriously lacks in-game managerial skills. This will be his last year in Pittsburgh.

No it won’t be his last year. The guy took the team to the playoffs 3 years in a row. He didn’t lose the team this year or get tuned out… they simply didn’t have the talent

They had the talent its hurdle having locke and nicasio piych 6-7 innings whenever even the fans know they implode in the 5th. Its also hurdle using s-rod over joyce or freese to pinch hit. He is just a bad manager.

Being a good motivator and lousy tactician makes you the best manager in the game, at least on a Fox broadcast

I read your article on trout, As an angels fan I believe they are never going to trade him. Yes he would bring back a major haul of prospects to rebuild the farm system, but In the deal , Is there another mike trout like type player coming back in the trade? Boston, Cubs , and the Phillies have the talent in their system to make the trade but I don’t see another Trout in their system, just like if the white sox trade chris sale

Good motivator? Lousy tactician? Seriously lacks in game managerial skills? Sounds a lot like Mike Matheny.

I’m optimistic about Mozeliak saying the will get and impact player. However, if History repeats it’s self, he’ll lose out on the big fish and actually look for, as he says, Low Hanging Fruit.

I think he will go out and get a Brett Gardner/Ozuna type player. I know he is looking at defense overall but he should consider an offensive threat as well such as Cespedes. Why not? The Cardinals are lacking a true #3 hitter and as you said if history repeats its self, the Cardinals will probably be in the middle of the pack offensively next year. Example: Last year most HR by any club, offense was great, pitching was mediocre at best. 2015 absolutely no offenses yet a historical year for pitching with mostly the same staff! See where I am going here. The Cardinals can seem to get all departments to click at the same time. It wouldnt hurt to invest in a slugger that can place centerfield moving Grichuk to left to insure we have an offensive.

Mozeliak has testicles the size of peas! Low hanging fruit! I Like that! He should go out and get McCutchen from the Pirates, If he can give Cecil 4 years, Cutch is worth 6! Johnny “no balls” doesnt have it in him! LOL

Any truth to the rumors of the Cardinals trading for Langoria or Dozier or both? Would involve Wacha, Garcia, Adams, and some minor leaguers?

      Did they overpay? YES
This GM has turned the Redbirds into a joke.
1 Brendon Moss – traded away a number one draft pick and then he hit .200 the end of that year. Why not just cut him and take the 6.5 million dollar hit. NO GIVE HM ANOTHER 3 MILLION. That money could have gotten you Sean Rodriguez $2.5 Million or Chris Carter $2.5 million
      2. Let the Cubs take the only signings he should have made last year .Zobrist and Fowler he would not beat the cubs $54 million for Zobrist or $8 million for Fowler. What a loser . Now he wants to get Fowler, a year to late. Without these 2 the Cubs would not have won the Central much less the WS. Check the stats when the cubs started 26-5 last year it was Fowler and Zobrist that carried the offense.
      3. $ 80 million for a .500 pitcher for 5 years why 5 years we only need a one year stop gap until Lynn gets back in 17 Just like this year when Duke is lost for 2017 he has a knee jerk reaction a gives this Cecil, He just lost 2 highly ranked lefty’s by not protecting them. either one could have done the job Cecil will.
