The Indians have claimed lefty Tim Cooney from the Cardinals, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation tweets. He apparently lost his roster spot as St. Louis makes some hard decisions on younger, Rule 5-eligible players.
Cooney, 25, showed a lot of promise in 2015. Not only did he debut with six solid major league starts; he also posted a strong 2.74 ERA over 88 2/3 Triple-A innings. It seemed reasonable to expect that he’d play a major role in the Cards’ rotation mix this year and beyond.
Instead, shoulder troubles prevented Cooney from pitching at all in 2016. And his health remains in question this winter, with the Cardinals suggesting he could be limited even at the start of Spring Training. But Cooney would be quite a nice asset if he can get past the bum wing, and the Indians apparently see enough of a possibility to put in a claim.

Umm, how did 28 other teams pass up on Cooney? Unless my math is wrong then ignore
Francys01
Good move for the Indians. The Cardinals lost a good prospect, however the Cardinals still have good pitching.
cardfan2011
So long Tim!
Gballer
John mozeliack needs to be fired we have lost multiple players this offseason and he has done nothing about it to get anyone better

The Cardinals’ roster had a lot of deadwood. That’s essentially what’s been leaving:
Moss–overpaid, overused bench guy
Holiday–the only real everyday player in the batch that’s left, and he’s been declining for a while
Hazelbaker–AAAA outfielder
Keikhefer–fringe LOOGY
Walden–closer never healthy
Williams–waiver wire reliever
So, why should a GM be fired over letting that batch go? It’s November. It’s not even Thanksgiving. Look around the league and show me all of the major hot deals being made, and then maybe I’ll panic. The Cardinals have always been cautious about the off-season, but it’s not like they’ve never brought in key players when necessary, despite of the last off-season’s major disappointment.
As far as Tim Cooney goes…he’s a decent SP prospect who is coming off of shoulder surgery and may have limitations put on him as he entered Spring Training. It’s entirely possible that Cooney’s progress in recovery worried the Cardinals, and they decided to protect one of their healthy high minors relievers rather than a rehabbing starting prospect, especially when he’s got roughly 8 SPs ahead of him on the depth chart (Martinez, Wainwright, Lynn, Leake, Garcia, Reyes, Weaver, Wacha, plus possibly Gomber and Mayers). I hate to see him go; I always liked him as an unheralded prospect, but I seriously doubt that the Cardinals were actually counting on him for depth this season.

The offseason is barely three weeks old. The winter meetings haven’t even come around. Calm down, lol.
tim815
He had a rough 40 Man spot. I was saying so as a Cubs fan in July.
So many guys like Cooney and Wong. Too good to want to let go, not proven enough to trade for value, or use as a full-regular.
They still might lose some more talent. Kind of cornered by the deadline this time.

We’re only a couple weeks into the offseason and the GM of your team hasn’t made any moves? What!?!? Absolutely fire him he has no clue what he’s doing. You sir sound incompetent, not sure who else the cardinals have lost but come on man really?
Very few teams make deals this early, this isn’t The Show on your PlayStation teams don’t offer contracts on day one of free agency and the next the player accepts. This takes time that’s why the offseason is until February/March plenty of time to make many moves
timyanks
the cardinals offseason started october 3, almost seven weeks ago

R.E.L.A.X – there’s a reason da burds have been good for a while now. He knows what he is doing. Tough one with, Cooney but fire the man? Dumb dumb

Hahahah

Wow dude, calm way down.
Moz is a great GM and the off-season just began and they have a lot of players who need to be protected from the rule V
EndinStealth
Lmao. Take a chill pill. That’s why teams have roster spots. Not everyone can be protected. Tim is a loss but anyone that is on the roster would have not been protected.

It’s still November, step back from the ledge.

We’re 3 weeks into the offseason. Cooney wouldn’t have had a roster spot ANYWHERE. With Reyes, Weaver, Lynn, Leake, Wainwright, Wacha, Martinez and others, he had no place on the MLB roster. That’s why they took him off the 40 man. You’re not him. Getting rid of Cooney doesn’t make them any worse than last year considering he didn’t even pitch last year.
Windians9831
Pretty solid stats, welcome to cleveland.
fannclub6
Agree with Clark. No need to over react here. Chances are Mo knew something and chose not to protect him. Indians are taking a chance. If he was with protecting, Mo would have done it. Long way to go till April 2.
dbacksrs
This could go down as one of the biggest claims this offseason. If Cooney is healthy next season, he should have no problem putting up solid numbers for the Indians. Great pickup.
relic
If healthy, Marco Gonzales is far better.

With Michael Wacha at No. 7 now on the depth chart behind Wainwright, Martinez, Reyes, Leake, Lynn and the re-signed Jaime Garcia, youngster Luke Weaver is now in Cooney’s old spot at No. 8, with a (knock on wood) healthy Marco Gonzo behind him at No. 9.
Cooney was expendable.
Cyclone37
I agree with Gballer. Fire Mo…every team in the division had gotten better in our division the last 3 seasons except the Cards. Not a relevant move at the deadline for 3 seasons. Time to move on.
RedBirdsSwaff
We won 101 games last year and we have the most regular and post season wins in the past 5 years. GMs who have that resume typically stay around.. not to mention 2 WS titles under his regime.

25 man active roster leaves 15 spots to complete the 40. As much promise as Cooney shows, can we really say he makes that final 15? Even if he is a 2nd or third starter in AAA it would still be a tough call to not consider removing him from the final 15.
I think the uncertainty over his injury was the nail in the coffin. Tough call for the GM here.
