Cardinals Place Stephen Piscotty On 10-Day DL

By charliewilmoth | July 15, 2017 at 3:54pm CDT

The Cardinals have announced that they’ve placed outfielder Stephen Piscotty on the 10-day DL with a right groin strain. To take his place on the active roster, they’ve recalled outfielder Magneuris Sierra from Double-A Springfield.

[Related: St. Louis Cardinals News & Rumors on Facebook]

The move leaves the Cardinals conspicuously short in the outfield, having placed Randal Grichuk on the 10-day DL yesterday with a lower back strain. In place of those players, the Cardinals will lean on Jose Martinez and Sierra to flank Dexter Fowler and Tommy Pham in the Cards’ outfield.

Grichuk has struggled this season and Piscotty hasn’t been outstanding (.236/.348/.371), so the 28-year-old Martinez has out-hit both players in his first sustained bit of big-league action, with a .280/.321/.464 line over 135 plate appearances. The 21-year-old Sierra, though, might be over his head if given much playing time — he’s batted a good, but not excellent, .293/.326/.403 for Springfield and has limited experience above the Class A level. He did fare well in two brief big-league stints earlier this year. MLB.com rates him the Cardinals’ eighth-best prospect.

The Cardinals also have another strong outfield prospect in Harrison Bader who’s hit very well for Triple-A Memphis. Unlike Sierra, though, Bader isn’t currently on the club’s 40-man roster, which might be why the Cardinals promoted Sierra instead for a stint in the big leagues that might again be short.

No they put him on the DL because he’s not hitting. So are the Cardinals actually going to make a move or just see what happens and do their shopping in the offseason? With a new GM I hope he makes a mid-season splash.. Go out and get Stanton, Machado, Donaldson, or J.D. Martinez!

Did you watch Friday’s game? He went to throw the ball and went down screaming in pain, with an obvious groin injury.

They had no problem demoting Grichuk or Diaz when they weren’t hitting.

You’re the one that made a statement of fact that is very unlikely to be true. The burden on proof is not on me, it’s on you.

You really think Mo isn’t pulling the strings? Stantons contract will be an albatross in a few years. A club killer. Machado and Donaldson ok, but not Martinez. The Cards need far more than him to turn this season around. He’ll only be a rental so not worth the prospect cost.

Stanton is one of the youngest (27) of that bunch and yes, his contact is huge but for a reason. By the end of it, it wouldn’t look that bad compared to what Harper, Trout, Machado, and what looks like Judge will get. The idea would be to put a hitter of that caliber in the 3 spot and it would make the other hitters better.. see better pitches – remember when they had Albert Pujols? Especially in 2011 when they only won 83 games. No identity for this team other than a fan favorite in Molina.

No, they need to sell. Trade Carpenter, Pham, Wong, Greg Garcia, Lynn, Oh, Siegrist. Get some prospects to start getting better in 2018. They don’t have to prospects to get the players required to make this team good, because they are more than 1 or 2 away. And have to many middle of the roster players, only Carlos Martinez would be considered a top 5 on a good roster, maybe Carpenter but not what he’s done this season though. Still think Carpenter would fill a void at 3B in Boston or 1B with NYY and the Cards could get some needed pieces to move forward. Probably not a perfect fit defensively at either, but overall improvement for either.

Personally I think Carps down year is just that, a down year. Don’t think we could get close to what he’s actually worth. Hold on to him and wait for 2018. But the others I totally agree.

If the Yankees or Red Sox would give 2 top prospects and 1-2 lesser known I’d do it in a heartbeat. Carp doesn’t have a true defensive position. DeJong looks like he can play. Gyorko can be 3B, where he belongs, or shift to 2B if they upgrade the offense via 3B. Voit needs a look at 1B. OF Fowler, unfortunately, and Piscotty are signed. LF options are Sierra, Bader, J.A. Garcia, Grichuk?, Martinez?, Diaz position change?. Get some prospects for Carpenter and get to rebuilding!

Most of these young guys that are hitting are hitting because nobody has a book on them yet.. throwing $$ at Piscotty for a half season was ridiculous. Bad move by Mo, then he gets a promotion.

Yeah man problem with that is you can’t get squat for any of these players right now.. especially the talented ones like Carp who still has a very high ceiling. Your basically a Cards fan on tilt- absolute panic mode bud.

I like what I saw out of sierra, but I think now would have been the perfect time to give Bader a shot to see what he can do

How about Melky Cabrera and Anthony Swarzak
    for
??? (maybe Oscar Mercado and Austin Gomber???)

    Melky – .328 avg. 4 HR, 20 RBI in last 31 games.

The last thing the Cardinals need is more so so players they have 40 of them. They need to sell off 6-10 of them to true contenders who need help and get some prospects and see if what youth they have can play enough to keep a job.

I’m content to experience a down 2017, maybe not a real strong 2018. I’d make M. Carpenter, Wong, Diaz, Lynn, Grichuk, Oh, Piscotty, Pham, J Martinez all available for a top of the rotation ace. Build a team around pitching, speed and defense. I believe the payroll for that type of team is more manageable. And- for me – more interesting to watch than a bunch of club foots waiting for a three run tater.

I think the Cards should trade for Ozuna that sends Kelly and Weaver plus a few others to Miami. Neither will have that big of and impact with the Cards. Maybe the should trade Lynn and Oh for some smaller prospects or some Bullpen help. Maybe hold off on trading anyone else and see where they are at the end of the season then decide if they should trade or buy. They have a strong young core already that they could build around with Martinez, Reyes, Dejong, and Piscotty

So trade Lynn and his viable replacement in Weaver? I’ve heard rumbles of trading Kelly too. Which would be a huge mistake. Better to have him split time in 2018 and then Yadi to become a very expensive back up 2019 and 2020. This team needs way more than Ozuna to be good. They need to blow it up and rebuild.

i agree. they need to keep weaver and kelly unless those 2 will bring back ozuna, which they wont. id say go after stanton and ozuna. stanton will opt out in 3 years which limits his trade value, not to mention how much hes making. id send weaver, kelly, piscotty, grichuk and alcantara and pay all of stantons contract if it got us both him and ozuna. they need to sell ,not just hang around and lose prospects and not make the playoffs. lynn has serious trade value and rosenthal is trending up, they got assets, now sell sell sell. our system is strong, they would be idiots to buy

You make a valid point but that’s the problem they won’t sell and they aren’t aggressive enough. Let’s not forget the made 1 move last year and that was to acquire Zack Duke…

I agree.. I think they should consider extending Lynn and trading a pitching prospect for better defense and or offense. Lynn is the most underrated pitcher in baseball.

The problem is that you can’t rebuild and go young if Matheny is the manager. Him and Mabry destroy young promising bats and bullpen arms
