Twins, Yankees Moving Toward Jaime Garcia Trade

By Connor Byrne | July 30, 2017 at 7:10am CDT

7:10am: Talks between the Twins and Yankees are “at the 1-yard line,” tweets ESPN’s Buster Olney. The Yankees will continue to talk to the A’s about acquiring Gray as well even after the Garcia trade is finalized.

12:53am: Yankees Double-A pitching prospect Zack Littell is part of the talks, tweets Jon Morosi of MLB Network. The Yankees scratched the righty from his start Saturday. MLB.com ranks Littell as New York’s 22nd-best prospect.

12:39am: The Yankees and Twins are “deep into discussions” on a trade that would send left-hander Jaime Garcia to New York, reports Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports (on Twitter). Acquiring Garcia would not take the Yankees out of the running for Athletics right-hander Sonny Gray, according to Passan. Reports on Saturday tabbed the Yankees as the favorites to land Gray.

As is the case with Gray, the Yankees have come up in Garcia rumors throughout July. Garcia has already changed teams once this month, having gone from the Braves to the Twins this past Monday in a deal that netted Atlanta unheralded pitching prospect Huascar Ynoa. While the upstart Twins were buyers at the outset of the week, they’ve done a 180 thanks to a 1-5 skid since Monday that has dropped them to 50-52 – seven games out in an American League Central division they once led and four back in the wild-card race.

The 31-year-old Garcia has made just one start with the Twins, a 6 2/3-inning, three-earned run effort in which he struck out seven and walked three in a win over the A’s on Friday. Garcia, an impending free agent who’s owed around $4.5MM through year’s end, has been effective all season, having logged a 4.29 ERA (4.04 FIP), 6.29 K/9, 3.31 BB/9 and a 55 percent ground-ball rate over 119 2/3 innings. He’d upgrade the back end of a Yankees rotation that has most recently relied on Caleb Smith, who has combined to throw seven subpar frames in two starts dating back to last Sunday, and join Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka, CC Sabathia and Jordan Montgomery to comprise their starting staff.

Acquiring Gray on top of Garcia would create an extremely interesting conundrum for the Yankees, as it would give the team six capable starters and more than make up for the loss of Michael Pineda to Tommy John surgery. The least proven member of the group would be Montgomery, though the rookie has pitched at least as well as Garcia this year. It’s worth noting, however, that Montgomery has never thrown more than 139 1/3 innings in a season and has already amassed 108 this year. In an effort to tamp down his workload, then, perhaps he’d be a candidate to shift to a relief role. Jon Heyman of FanRag noted Saturday (on Twitter) that the Yankees “wouldn’t mind” picking up another southpaw for their bullpen, and the lefty Montgomery has limited same-sided hitters to a horrid .177/.236/.392 line this season.

Regardless of how the Yankees’ rotation aligns going forward, it’s apparent that general manager Brian Cashman believes the club is a legitimate World Series contender. Cashman made a bold strike earlier this month in picking up two standout relievers – Tommy Kahnle and David Robertson – as well as third baseman Todd Frazier in a trade with the White Sox, and New York has awoken from an early summer slumber since then to regain first place in the American League East. Winners of six straight, the Yankees own a 56-46 record and a half-game advantage over the Red Sox in the division. The Yankees also boast the AL’s second-best run differential (plus-117), which suggests their record should be even better than it is.

in 2013 the twins made 57.47 mil after their earned revenue + shared revenue while the Yankees made 96.68 mil. after earned and shared revenue. Yes, the Yankees share 34% of their revenue with everyone (just like everyone else does) but they bring in so much more they are still way ahead.

Not really. Same value. The idea was intended to help small market teams remain competitive, so it’s a good thing to see them directly plying it towards upgrading the product on the field, as many a small market owner view revenue sharing as a way to close the gap b/w the profit their fellow large market owners can generate vs. their own and just pocket the money

Would not be a crushing blow to the farm but I’d much rather see Cashman stay the course with the rebuild than trade anything for a player who won’t be a significant difference maker. Garcia would be an upgrade over Caleb Smith, but so would a potted plant.

Yankees need a lefty specialist. They weren’t going to be able to get Wilson back. Montgomery has a serious innings limit, and lefties hitting .177 against him. The Yankees can kill 2 birds with 1 stone. Put the talented Montgomery in the pen, conserve his arm, and put him to use. Garcia is a wonderful back end starter. Can never have too many quality arms. Littel may 1 day be a stud, but NO guarantee, and the Yankees appear to be ahead of schedule.
I like adding both Gray and Garcia. They all have Chance ready to fire. Gray’s been injured quite a bit; CC is on fumes; Tanaka’s arm is hanging by a thread……and you guys don’t want to add a couple of starters ? haha
I’ve been a Yankee fan for 65 years, born in the Bronx 69 1/2 years ago. Anyone old enough to remember Brien Taylor ? 1st OVERALL selection in 1991. Yankees gave him a $1,000,000 bonus IN 1991 !

Who cares IF you’re a Yankee fan ? The trade would help the Yankees THIS YEAR. They are in 1st place, you’re aware of that, right ? This has been by far Cashman’s best year. He should be right there for g.m. of the year. Particularly if the Yankees can make some noise.
I’d make Houston a comfortable favorite, with the Yankees close to the Indians. RedSox are .500 when Sale doesn’t pitch. Keuchel does have the Yankees number, though.

Inane comment. Lefties are pretty valuable in Yankee Stadium, and tell me whom on the Yankee pitching staff would you be 95% positive won’t fade, get injured, or suffer from the occasional blow up, if not a dead arm ?
So you think the Yankees should give up Florial AND Littel for an oft injured Sonny Gray ? Not in this planet will that happen.

Not sure where this often injured narrative came from. He was healthy throughout his time in the minors and his first 3 seasons in the majors and got injured in 2016 that lingered into 2017. His performance when healthy is liken to a solid #2 starter.

Yankees system is rated as the second best in all of baseball on most lists, or all lists.

Twins system is middle of the pack. He would likely be a top 15 Twins prospect. Depending on the list he could even be top 10.

You could package together #s 27, 28, 29, and 30 and claim it is a 4 top 30 package. Gray will require 1 top 5, 1 top 10, and prob 1 more top 15. Quality is more important than quantity with a player with both the skill and years of control as Gray.

I think most of us are forgetting the fact that Mortgomery has innings limit. He never pitched beyond 130/140 innings in the past. So, even after acquiring Gray (assuming that goes thru), we would still need another starter. It can’t be Chance Adams because 1) He is also approaching innings limit 2) He still needs to develop couple of his pitches per the front office. So, let Cashman work his magic and get us two starters without losing the top 4 prospects. Those of you who are not happy with giving away pitching prospects, rememeber, if the top 10 prospects can’t solve your problem, whats the guarantee rest of the guys will solve it for you in the future. As long we we keep the key pieces, IMHO, its okay to deal other prospects for WIN NOW and WIN LATER purpose!

If he can pull his socks up AND we get Gray, i think we would have legitimate chance in the post-season.considering our hitting is pretty decent and the strong bullpen. But that’s a big IF though!

If Beane is not getting one of them in return then he shouldn’t take the deal, plain and simple.

If Beane wants too much for Gray then Cashman shouldn’t take the deal, plain and simple.

If Chris Sale was still on the market, I wonder if Cashman would of traded Frazier or Torres plus adams for him.
