Giants Among Teams Showing Interest In Domingo Santana

By Jeff Todd | December 10, 2017 at 8:34am CDT

SUNDAY: The Giants also have interest in Broxton, per Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (Twitter link). After breaking out during an abbreviated 2016 campaign, Broxton took steps backward last season, hitting .220/.299/.420 across 463 PAs and earning poor marks in center field (minus-7 Defensive Runs Saved, minus-2.2 Ultimate Zone Rating). The soon-to-be 28-year-old still managed to rack up 20 homers and 21 stolen bases, however, and comes with five years of team control.

FRIDAY: The Brewers are “getting hits” on quite a few outfielders, according to a report from Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (Twitter link). That includes Domingo Santana, who has been pursued by teams including the Giants.

It’s hardly surprising to hear that rival organizations are prodding the Brewers to move an outfielder. The team has numerous talented players that fit several different profiles. Veteran Ryan Braun is unlikely to be traded, per the report, due at least in part to his no-trade rights. But with a few other roster needs and other areas to upgrade, it’s certainly reasonable to think that Milwaukee is amenable to considering a move involving some of its other outfielders.

Santana is likely the most valuable player of the bunch. He’s just 25, is controllable for four more seasons (one of them at the league minimum), and is fresh off of a season in which he posted a .278/.371/.505 slash with thirty home runs in 607 plate appearances. If the team prefers to keep the established asset, it might consider swaps involving Keon Broxton, Lewis Brinson, or Brett Phillips, each of whom could conceivably be a long-term answer in center field for the Brewers or another team.

Of course, that doesn’t mean the Brewers are offering up any bargains. As Brewers GM David Stearns told MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy today (Twitter link), the club is not exactly anxious to pare back its depth and can still option Brinson and/or Phillips. There’s no question whatsoever that Santana, among others, would only be dealt if the Brewers felt they were receiving compelling value — likely, in a manner that would allow the team to improve both now and in the future. Milwaukee is most clearly in need of starting pitching.

Santana makes for an interesting target for the Giants, who could also compete with the Cardinals for the best outfielders on the free agent and trade markets after being spurned by Giancarlo Stanton. San Francisco is clearly working through a variety of possibilities now that the Stanton deal won’t be happening. Rosenthal also notes that San Francisco has maintained its interest in free agent outfielder Jay Bruce, and MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand tweets that the same holds true of Lorenzo Cain.

So a guy who slashed .259/.363/.455 with 23 HR and is limited defensively would have been more climactic for you than a guy who slashed .278/.371/.505 with 30 HR and 15 SB while playing a decent RF? Not to mention that Domingo is 6 years younger than Carlos.

If I’m David Stearns, I’d see no problem with just keeping the outfield depth. If they do trade someone, though, I’d say Broxton; he’s an intriguing player and I’d love to have him, but he seems too much like a Chris Young-type. They could still get solid value if they traded him.

Unfortunately, one of those will probably have to go in the package to get a quality starting pitcher back. I don’t think Broxton would do it, unless they include a ton of prospects.

If they’re making a move to get a solid starter, then so be it. I just meant that I wouldn’t trade any of them for the sole purpose of clearing a logjam, but I wasn’t clear enough about that. You’re right too.

Actually I was wondering if some sort of deal could be made with the Teheran the primary piece coming from Atlanta. I don’t think in any way however that the Brewers would agree with a one for one swap for Domingo Santana at this point.

I don’t know exactly what it would take, but I’d be willing to send something built around Teheran for any of Santana, Brinson or Phillips coming back (although obviously one team or the other would have to add pieces depending on the outfielder).

This is a downgrade on the ML team. Why not just sign someone solid like someone solid like Vargas, Smyly, or (dare I say it?) Lance Lynn? Hell, Trevor Cahill was pretty great with the Padres last year. I think we need one solid guy AND a fill-in for Jimmy Nelson this off-season. Fifth starter will be Woodruff/Hader/Suter/pick any of the guys knocking on the door.

Not quite sure why everyone is so against trading Domingo. I highly doubt we would trade him without something significant in return (ie a ML ready player plus a prospect or two). Milwaukee would be making a mistake by making any single player on the roster untouchable when we have other areas we could improve with a trade. We are in position to be picky, so if we don’t get any good offers, we hang on to him

It’s highly unlikely we are trading our top prospect for Dee Gordon. If we actually flip Brinson for major league ready players, it should be part of a Chris Archer type deal or someone else who fits at the top of the rotation

Possibly but I don’t think there is a tremendous advantage to putting Dee Gordon in CF when he is a 2B with the OF depth we have. Plus Gordon’s production is so similar to Broxton, that it’s not much of a true upgrade.

The idea would be for MIL to put Gordon back at 2B and hit him either leadoff or second in the order.

Gordon’s better than the Brewers’ in-house options at 2B, in my opinion.

This is a blessing in disguise for the Giants. If they play this right, SF could enact a quick rebuild.
The Giants should make these three players available: Samardzija, Belt, and Span, this offseason.
It’s a likely scenario that money would have to be included in trading any of those 3 players in order to get something of quality back. Regardless the Giants could still add some decent pieces to the farm while relieving themselves of significant salary moving forward. And then if a bit of luck is on their side, a healthy Cueto and Melancon could be shopped during the ’18 season.
If SF does in fact get some portions of those salaries off the books, they could then, theoretically, be major players in next years free agent class. A team like the Giants, with the ability to spend, does not have to go through a lengthy rebuild, especially with a timely elite FA class coming up.

They won’t need to go through a lengthy rebuild IF they realize they need to rebuild.
Doesn’t matter how much they can spend. Look at Philly. We’re going into our first season with any hope over the past five years (assuming we had hope going into 2012).

      Reply
      • daksworld

That’s the biggest thing. They absolutely have to realize they need to start a rebuild now. With better health, the Giants could compete for a Wild Card spot in 2018, but with a core that will consist of players on the wrong side of 30 in 2019, things could turn back down quickly. Is it really worth being a fringe competitive team for 1 season and then rebuild for more than a couple years, rather than maybe throwing away one or two years with the chance at another sustained run of success? I don’t think so…

Sarg and Belt have no trade clauses in their contracts and have zero plus value with their contracts. Plus nobody wants Span he’s an average bat at best and zero arm who can only play LF. Of coure the Giants are interested in every good outfielder available it’s the teams biggest need.

Agreed, sadly with the way that things are going, unless a lot of things go right, a lot of guys who underperformed last year turn it around this year could end up looking a lot like last year. The only possible bright spot without upgrades is that a healthy Smith and melancon might mean a few less losses since last year, unless they went into the 9th with a 7 run lead or more you expected them to still lose

Haha would be interesting proposal for sure. Not sure if Wacha is the type of pitcher the crew is targeting though. If they do decide to move Santana with his value being pretty high, they might look for a more established frontline starter as part of the return or use prospect to flip for a SP. That seems to make the most sense to me but you never know

      • Crewfan620

I guess I should also be clear, it would have to probably be more that just Santana alone for a frontline pitcher. It’s also not likely a team willing to trade a frontline SP would even want a major league player like Santana as part of the return
