Red Sox Notes: Stanton, JBJ, Offense, Bullpen

By Connor Byrne | December 11, 2017 at 6:34pm CDT

President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski told reporters Monday that the Red Sox “did all our homework” on Giancarlo Stanton before the Marlins traded him to the Yankees. In the end, though, the club wasn’t on the list of teams to which Stanton would have accepted a trade. Even if the Red Sox were on that list, which consisted of the Yankees, Astros, Dodgers and Cubs, they weren’t keen on acquiring his contract, Evan Drellich of NBC Sports Boston suggests. Stanton’s agent, Joel Wolfe, revealed that the Red Sox “never tried to make a deal with the Marlins.” That didn’t come as a surprise to Wolfe, who noted Boston has “a tremendous outfield” with three “studs” in Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr. and Andrew Benintendi. Wolfe added that Boston’s focus as of last month’s GM meetings was on “pitching and other areas.” Specifically, they’re seeking relief help and a power bat, Drellich reports.

More on the Red Sox:

  • A report Monday morning indicated that the Red Sox had put Bradley on the block, but that’s not the case, according to Dombrowski. “Not accurate,” he said (Twitter link via Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe).
  • While famed agent Scott Boras has encouraged Boston to sign both free agent first baseman Eric Hosmer and outfielder J.D. Martinez, Dombrowski suggested that adding a pair of hitters isn’t likely. “I don’t know where we’d play the two bats,” he stated (via Alex Speier of the Boston Globe, on Twitter). Dombrowski didn’t specify whether the Sox would prefer to pick up a hitter via the open market or trade, Drellich tweets, though Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that they’re telling teams they’d rather go the latter route right now than wait out free agency (Twitter link).
  • Dombrowski also touched on his team’s bullpen, saying that “getting a right-handed reliever is not our driving force.” He pointed to Carson Smith as one of the most effective righty-on-righty relievers in the game (Twitter link via Speier). Smith returned from 2016 Tommy John surgery this past September and thrived over 6 2/3 innings, striking out seven while giving up one run on six hits and two walks.

Probably. Tommy John surgery recovery completed + offseason should make him ready to go for 2018.

His delivery has huge injury risks, I wouldn’t be surprised if he suffers another major arm injury next year.

Jeter had two choices keep him and pay him or send him where he wants to go

I think they’ll get Hosmer and I think he’ll have the Hosmer-type impact one would expect.. David Price, whether they like him or not, is basically in a free agent year and if he can stay on the mound, the Sox can play with anyone.

I agree he thinks too much of himself….And its not race related though David would like people to think it is. And his bad advice is ruining Porcello.

David’s issue is in his own ego. He’s a pox on The Hub

Price could have an injury free dominant year and still wouldn’t opt out for a larger financial guarantee. The only reason he may want to opt out regardless of potential earning power is to get away from Boston.

Agreed. The report made it seem like they’re shopping him, starting every trade with him the centerpiece. Dombrowski seemed to imply they don’t intend to trade him but if he was the demand of a team then he’d be willing to listen.

100% agree, JBJ has had 1 good year and last year he put up a .245, 17HR, 63RBI, 8SB line (FAR from studly). If they had an OF of Betts, Benni & Stanton then that would be 3 studs.

It’s the Yankee way: Spend money and buy a ring. Watch them pick up Darvish or Arietta to stack the deck some more. This nnonsense has been going on forever in the MLB. A hard salary cap would put an end to this nonsense, but widespread collusion between the owners and the evil empire won’t adopt one.

Judge, Sanchez, Bird, Gardner, ect were all homegrown. No one wanted Didi. Next will be Torres and Andujar. The Yankee way is now developing young players. Maybe your lousy team should try it and they wouldn’t stink so bad.

Red Sox have developed a ton of talent it’s the only way you can win now. You can’t just go out and buy a championship without developing a good portion of your team from within. The free agent market is very costly in terms of WAR. Almost the entire Red Sox team except for the pitchers and 1st base are home grown.

Kind of cherry picking what DD said. He completely denied he was not in on Stanton. The agent could only have heard this erroneous information from the Marlins since they cant tamper and talk direct. DD said he talked to the Marlins about Stanton and the asking price very high (entire contract, top prospects and controlled assets) Even when he called back while they were in discussions with Yankees he was not able to discuss further. No attempt apparently was made to play Red Sox off Yankees for a better deal

The idea the Red Sox would not move JBJ for a hitter which they clearly have as a priority after last years dismal offensive is ludicrous and makes one wonder if folks are covering up Jeters lack of due diligence

DD refuted that pitching was a priority and acquiring Stanton simply means they put Hanley at DH instead of trying to acquire JDM

Stantons contract also would not have been an issue in a year the Red Sox will not be over the LT since the AAV is not much higher than Hanleys AAV and he can come off the books after 2018

Not sure anyone outside the Marlins has seen Stantons complete list. Seems it was an evolving one

Miami fans have to wonder if they got all they might have as their CEO showed loyalty to his old team

Don’t like a six-year deal to Martinez – four years tops, but that doesn’t get the deal done. Love Hosmer’s leadership, but his bat solves little. Three years and $60 million to Encarnacion is a steal, should have listened to Papi.

Say what you want about Price he can pitch and he is a pure pitcher rather than a thrower like Sale.. Hopefully he continues to grow into the Ace the Sox paid dearly for. Porcello is the mystery to me. If the pen is healthy with several stoppers they could thwart the Yankee lineup.
93 wins in 2017 does not constitute a Rebuild just some Tweaking.
Price, Sale, Pomerantz, ERod and Porcello.
They need to look for another R H starter trading
perhaps Pomerantz or ERod plus JBJ to Pittsburg for Gerrit Cole and McCutchen..
Who knows–I’d like to think RS management has a plan.
FA Lance Lynn has a pretty good history coming from St. L. Over 30 starts a season carrying a 3.38 ERA over 6 years.
There are some diamonds in the “Nooks and Crannies.
Don’t be disillusioned Sox fans the farm has some decent arms that are close.

Stanton seems like a giant dche bag. When old ownership held a fire sale on Jose Reyes, Mark Burhle and others a few years ago he wanted to be traded, then he signs a mega deal. He voiced how unhappy he was with the Marlins every chance he got but had no problem taking the long term deal. His crappy “me, me , me” attitude (which was on full display during this recent saga) will be a perfect fit in New York.
