Cubs, Peter Bourjos Agree To Minor League Deal

By Steve Adams | February 1, 2018 at 12:04pm CDT

12:04pm: Bourjos will earn a $1.45MM base salary if he makes the big league roster with the Cubs, MLBTR has learned (Twitter link).

11:57am: The Cubs have agreed to a minor league contract with outfielder Peter Bourjos, reports Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune (Twitter link). The Dishman Sports Group client will be invited to Major League Spring Training and vie for a reserve job with the reigning NL Central champs.

Bourjos, 30, spent the 2017 season with the Rays and appeared in 100 games, hitting .223/.272/.383 with five homers and five steals in 203 plate appearances. A fleet-footed veteran known for his outfield range, he drew positive marks for his glovework both in center field and in right field last season with Tampa Bay.

Overall, Bourjos hasn’t matched the .271/.327/.438 slash he posted in a promising 2011 season with the Angels, but he’s a career .241/.298/.382 hitter that brings a glowing +37 Defensive Runs Saved and +48.3 Ultimate Zone Rating to the table in 4007 1/3 innings of center field work in the Majors (albeit with much of that positive working coming prior to 2014 hip surgery).

He’ll head to Spring Training and hope to land a backup job in an outfield mix that includes Albert Almora Jr., Jason Heyward and Kyle Schwarber. Both Ben Zobrist and Ian Happ figure to be in the outfield mix for the Cubs as well, giving Bourjos a pair of switch-hitters with whom to compete. Bourjos has more experience in center field than anyone else on the Cubs’ roster, though, and he’d make for a useful right-handed pairing with Schwarber or Heyward should the Cubs see fit. He struggled against lefties earlier in his career but has hit them at a .278/.320/.406 pace over the past couple of seasons.

I’m ready for cubs fans to say how great of a signing this is. How they found their leadoff bitter who will steal 80 bases and outproduce Cain. Because Theo is god. LOL

They had no business winning a title that was well deserved? Man, Wisconsin fans are by far the worst. If you look at the bullets it was a response to TheChanceyColborn, not you brewcrew08. Although I see you’re all over this site lately spouting stats and how the WAR you guys gained is a no brainer that Brewers are favorites to win the NL Central. I have no doubt that what has been added to the Brewers roster is positive. But, it is going to be a tough division to run away with, yes I am bias as are you on who it’ll be but I just do not see the Brewers taking this division if no additional pieces are added to that rotation. No doubt they compete regardless though.

Man, you clearly didn’t watch game 7 where Joe Maddon tried his hardest to loss that game for the Cubs. They fought back and we got the win. It was a hell of a game, and well deserved, to say otherwise is just blind hatred for the Cubs for no reason.

In order for a team to blow a game/series, the opposing team has to step up. It’s a two-way street. A team can’t blow it if the other team doesn’t perform.

Agreed. You need to have a lead in order to blow a lead. Indians never had a lead in game 7.

So the fact the Indians “blew” the series, it’s not deserved and the Cubs 2016 is no longer World Champs in brewcrew08’s eyes. Makes sense. The series was hard fought on both sides. Winning 3 straight and/or losing last I checked happens quite a bit in baseball.

It’s comments like this that make our fan base look stupid. You can’t say with 100% certainty that we (the Cubs) are going to the NLCS, let alone the playoffs until we actually see it man. Yes, brewcrew08 is a homer, and is clearly well versed in statistics. If he is a true Brewers fan then I commend him on his continued support as I have done the same for the Cubs for my lifetime. But this screaming 2015/2016 bandwagoner that slams shots, goes to Wrigley, is a jack ass that doesn’t sit in his assigned seat and is an all around bro. Sit down cubbies95, you’re making us look stupid.

What’s it matter. They battled back and won. Those are the greatest victories. What about when Boston came back from 0-3 down and eventually won. Does that take away from their victory? Teams that have no business winning are teams like the royals who come out of nowhere and do rely on a fair bit of luck and “clutch”, not a powerhouse team like the 2016 Cubs

You’re not way off with your retort. It is all perspective. If my team lost a 3 games to 1 lead, my first reaction would be to say they choked. If my team came back from that deficit, my first reaction would be to say they fought back. But well over a year after the fact, I’d be able to give it a more nuanced look and see what really happened – because a 7-game series is never as simple as one team choking or the other team fighting back.

With the Cubs, they were down 3 games to 1, but they had their rotation set up to make that comeback. Lester, Arrieta, and Hendricks pitched those final three games. One was the reigning Cy Young winner, and the others finished in the top-3 for Cy Young vote that year. The Indians answered with Bauer, Tomlin, and Kluber. The Cubs had a significant advantage in games 5 and 6. Remember, Bauer had recently cut his hand open and proved to be pretty ineffective in Game 2. And while Tomlin dominated the Cubs in Game 3, most saw that as a fluke. He was, after all, a mid-4 ERA pitcher who dominated on the biggest state, in the biggest moment, against one of the league’s best offenses. Did anyone think he was going to do that twice in a row? And as for Kluber, he was making his sixth start of the postseason – his third start in eight days. Yes, he’d dominated throughout October, but is it fair to say he choked when fatigue was the more likely reason for his Game 7 failure? The bottom line for the World Series was this: the Cubs had a significantly better rotation than Cleveland, and they weren’t forced to overuse any of their starters to get to that moment.

The same could be said of Cleveland’s bullpen, specifically Andrew Miller who really struggled in Game 7. He was single-handedly making up for Cleveland’s rotation shortcomings throughout October, tossing 19.1 innings in October. To give you a little context on this, Miller tossed 74.1 innings over a 6-month season. Look, I get that October is unique from the regular season because of the scheduled off days, meaning that guys have more built-in rest days, but if Miller had pitched 19.1 innings every month of the season, he’d have tossed 116.0 innings. That’s insane for a relief pitcher regardless of off days. You can say he choked all you’d like, but again, the more likely reason for his Game 7 struggles was because he ran out of gas after being overused throughout the postseason.

Should we get more nuanced? Game 5 was a toss-up with the Cubs winning mainly on the efforts of one big inning and a dominant relief outing from a premier relief pitcher (Chapman.) That’s not choking. That’s just losing a game. Two nights later, the Cubs jumped all over Tomlin. It was 3-0 before the first commercial break. It was 7-0 before the Indians had batted through their order. I don’t see that as choking. I see it as the most likely outcome, a mediocre pitcher getting lit up by one of the best offenses in baseball. And then you had Game 7, a game where Kluber ran out of gas, Miller ran out of gas, and the Indians fell down early only to storm back by getting big hits off Lester and Chapman before falling in extra innings.

And here’s the thing – had the Cubs blown a 5-1 lead in Game 7, I wouldn’t say (a year later) that they choked it away. I’d say that Maddon over managed and cost his team. I’d say he burned out Chapman. I’d cite keeping him on the mound for the 9th inning of Game 6 with the Cubs leading 9-3. I’d point out that he did this two nights after using Chapman to retire the final 8 batters of Game 5. I’d bring up that after all of that, he was asking Chapman to retire the final 7 batter of Game 7. If someone told me the Cubs bullpen had been ineffective throughout the World Series, and that Chapman was the only reliever Maddon trusted in that situation, I’d remind that person that Kyle Hendricks was cruising into the 5th inning – and that despite not trusting his bullpen, Maddon pulled him after just 63 pitches in favor of Jon Lester who had just gone 6 innings three nights earlier. Essentially, Maddon intentionally put himself in a position to need Chapman for the final 7 batters. So would it have been a choke had they blown a 5-1 lead? Absolutely not. It would’ve been terrible game management by Maddon that cost the Cubs.

And see I know what you’re thinking right now. You’re thinking: This post is way too long. But that’s the thing. It needs to be long. Because in baseball, there’s a lot more that goes into who wins and who loses. It’s never as simple as choking and/or fighting back. That’s what makes baseball the best sport in the world.

Ok so the Indians win 3 out of the first 4 games and it’s cuz they are just flat out good, not cuz the Cubs gave it to them right? Then the Cubs win the last 3 in a row and it’s cuz the Indians gave it to the Cubs and not cuz they are good? Yeah sounds real logical…stop being bitter, the Cubs won that series because they didn’t give up and they were the better team. Get over it

Any time a team a wins a game or a series then, you can say that they had help from the losing team. From the bottom of the 4th inning of game 5 through the final out of game 7, the Cubs didn’t trail at all. That wasn’t Cleveland helping us, that was the Cubs team playing like they did that whole season and when they clicked like they did, they were better than any other team in baseball that year. Cleveland didn’t help the Cubs, the cubs just were better than Cleveland

So by your logic, any team that has ever come back from a 3-1 deficit doesn’t deserve their place in history. So the Braves, Red Sox, Royals, Cubs, Celtics, Lakers, Rockets, etc.
I think the issue is, since your a Brewers fan, you may not understand the concept of a seven game series, seeing as the Brewers have little experience in said series.

Broxton as a starting CF is pretty weak. Like I said a 0.4 WAR isn’t good. Repacking it with a guy who had a WAR over 5.0 is a substantial upgrade.

I know you’re probably from Chicago but they still teach math there right? Cain had a WAR of 5.3, Broxton had a 0.4 WAR. There’s 4.9 there. Yelich had a 3.9 WAR and Domingo had a 3.0 war. 0.9 plus 4.9 is 5.8 unless math changed recently ?

Nelson is expected back in June. I bet they can expect the same 4.00 ERA production the cubs get from their “ace” Lester.

How do you figure Baez is going to regress? What’s your logic there? Where are they going to regress, seriously? Arrieta is declining, which is why they have no desire to bring him back he had a 2.4 WAR and fastball has declined along with the WAR the last 3 years. I’ll make an argument they’ll be better without him, especially after they sign another starter. their rotation as a whole will be better than last year.

Was Lester not the ace anymore? Was the cliff he fell off last year enough to move him to 2-3 in the rotation? Baez had a .326 BABIP last year which was 20 points higher than his career. Not to mention he stuck out nearly 30% of his plate appearances.

Considering Hendricks was hurt and they didn’t have Quintana until halfway through the year, I guess he was last year. but whatever, sure he’s their ace, but he’s #3 in my book behind those two. Baez nearly doubled his walk percentage, hit 9 more home runs from 2016. his BABIP was.345 in 2017 and is a career .332 BABIP…so whatever

He’s 25 and he’s on a very good offensive team. last year he hit #8 or #9 in the lineup when in 2016 he was a lot higher in the order. He relaxed a lot being at the bottom which is well documented and will likely be at the bottom this year. they don’t need him near the top and he has struggled when he was put up there, he’s finally relaxed at the bottom and showed great strides. i expect him to be even better this year.

A guy who strikes out at a 30% clip can’t hit .275. It’s just not realistic to be throwing away 150 of your 500 at bats to K’s and expect that average to stay there. That’s why he’s a career .255 hitter

Aaron Judge struck out at an even higher rate and had an even higher average. So yes, it is realistic as we now have two examples from just last year of it happening.

Cain is significantly better than Broxton. But let’s get off the WAR thing for a minute because it’s been so badly misused by Cubs and Brewers fans since Milwaukee acquired Cain and Yelich. You don’t subtract Cain’s WAR from Broxton’s WAR and add that number to the Brewers win total. There is no prediction model in existence that predicts a win total by adding the cumulative WAR of all the teams.

I think that us Cub fans understand what this signing is. A depth piece that may or may not make the roster. If he does make the roster he will be more of a defensive replacement in later innings with occasional starts based on the match ups.

Jay is better… Which is why he’ll be paid more. The thought here is that the slowness of the market is allowing the Cubs to hold out hope that they can bring back Jay. But his price needs to drop. If that happens, they’ll release Bourjos without any real financial commitment. This signing doesn’t close the door on a Jay return. It simply provides insurance in the instance that Jay’s market develops and the Cubs can’t bring him back.

You do realize undermining people, calling them young, and on top of it calling out spelling/punctuation or in your case capitalization is a sign you’re triggered and have nothing to add to the topic. This was meant to get a laugh. It’s clear this signing is nothing more than depth and likely not to break camp on the 25 man roster unless he is lights out. Maybe he could rotate in if injuries occur.

The Cubs’ offense has the potential to be REALLY bad this year. They’ll need MVP-like years from Bryant, Rizz and much better year from Schwarber at the plate to win the division. In terms of pitching, if Morrow doesn’t isn’t lights out as closer, they’re in bigtime trouble to. If tge Cubs are smart, they’ll address these needs now, with FAs. The price may be too high once tge season starts (Baez, Almora, Happ, Schwarber).

You can basically ignore the post if it comes from Chi SoxCity. Team scored over 800 runs last year. If as he says all the Cubs hitters have near-mvp seasons the team will score close to 1,000.

He’s not quite as bad as yankee addiction (nobody is) and he’ll claim he’s not trolling but yeah you know.

You can sort of make the argument that they weren’t very good offensively last year and they still scored over 800 runs. Zobrist had a bad year, Schwarber had a bad year, Russell had a bad year (and missed six weeks), Bryant had a down year (in comparision), Contreras missed over a month, Heyward was as people like to say, was Heyward. If REALLY bad equals only 800 runs, I’m pretty sure that 90 wins gets it done in the division. If there is an uptick in a couple of the players I mentioned, they will safely jump back to the 95-100 range. They’ve won 292 games the last three seasons with three different closers. If Morrow isn’t lights out, someone else will step in for what they need. Nine closers had more saves than Davis last year. When you score over 800 runs, you can win a lot of games that the “closer” doesn’t pitch in.

When you emphasized “REALLY bad” like that than I know your opinion isn’t worth taking as free advice. A lot of things can happen in a big league season, but the Cubs offense being really bad is not one. REALLY bad would be what? Id say something like hitting under .240 as a team, a low to sub .300 team opb, scoring under 700 runs. No chance. Bryant, Rizzo, and Contreras alone will propel a lineup to “okay “. So then what? Schwarber, Russell, Baez, Almora, Happ all regress as early to mid twenty something year olds? Come on, not impossible. Certainly not probable.

Um… ok? The offense is basically the same as last year. And they were just fine despite getting negative production from Heyward, negative production from Schwarber and Contreras in the first half, only half a year from Russell, and absolutely nothing from Zobrist

So yea – if all that goes wrong again an Bryant and Rizzo tank, then sure, I suppose the Cubs offense could be terrible

All you NL central fans are way to bitter to each other. As an outside observer, it’s going to be an exciting three way race. I’ve always liked the Cubs a little bit, but I don’t think you Chicago fans realize how this team has the potential to underwhelm badly. The rotation is pretty iffy outside of Hendricks, and even the offense isn’t all that scary once you get by Bryant and Rizzo. It wouldn’t surprise me if they win the division again this year, but they could be in actual trouble if Baez, Scwarber or Russell don’t break out.

Still people can’t get over the Cubs. If they weren’t jelouse n worried they wouldn’t even be on this thread and posting. We as Cub fans are flattered.

Funny how Brewer fans troll this posting about the Cubs and a minor league sighning. I think every signing come to think about it. Yet they are excited the Brewers inquired about Archer. Which they pipe dreaming about. lol got news for you Brewer fans about 20 teams inquired about Archer. And Darvish and Cobb and JA and Cole and Fulmer and any other pitcher you want add to it. You Brewer fans must be new at the off season stuff. Lol

I’m a big cardinals fan but this could be a very good signing. His bat is his biggest question mark. The guy plays a great center field. Coupled with heyward in right makes great outfield defense.

All these trolls make me want to puke. Do you really have nothing better to do than to analyze minor league signings. I think these brewers fans are mad that they will be in second place for the next 6-10 years.

It’s a shame Bourjos hasn’t hit as he was expected to in the majors. I interviewed him many times when he was with the Cardinals. He is strong defensively and has great speed. He and his wife are such nice people that anyone who meets the roots for his success and keep hoping for that break through year with his bat.
