Padres Place Jose Torres On Restricted List

By Jeff Todd | February 13, 2018 at 9:50am CDT

TODAY: Torres is facing criminal charges in two matters, according to a troubling report from Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune. After a domestic dispute in December in which he allegedly pointed a gun at the woman he lives with, Torres was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, criminal damage, and intimidation. He is also facing charges relating to marijuana possession, per the report.

YESTERDAY: The Padres have placed lefty Jose Torres on the restricted list, the team announced (h/t MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell, on Twitter). That gives the organization an open 40-man roster spot.

It is not known at present just why Torres has gone on the restricted list. There are quite a few conceivable reasons for such a placement. While some relate to malfeasance of varying kinds, it’s necessary to keep in mind that there are also some non-nefarious possibilities. At this point, then, there’s no basis for guessing at the underlying issue that has led to the placement.

Torres, a 24-year-old reliever, turned in a solid rookie season last year and seemed to have a good shot at claiming an active roster spot this spring. In 68 1/3 innings in 2017, he pitched to a 4.21 ERA with 8.3 K/9 and 2.1 BB/9, showing a mid-nineties heater and generating a solid 11.1% swinging-strike rate but also allowing an unhealthy volume of home runs (1.71 per nine).

With the news, the Padres will have some added roster space to work with as they weigh any further additions. The competition among lefties will now be missing a favorite, but the Friars do have a quite a few other possibilities on the 40-man already. In addition to closer Brad Hand, relievers Buddy Baumann, Brad Wieck, Kyle McGrath, and Jose Castillo all throw from the left side. Southpaw starters Robbie Erlin and Matt Strahm could also be in the relief mix if they fail to crack the MLB rotation.

Not assuming his status in the US. But from what I have seen from people being in restricted list is visa issues. I think Jung Ho Kang is listed on the restricted right? Domestic abuse as well. Wonder what happened.

Restricted List doesn’t have to be all bad, axisofhonor25.

In 2013, Ryan Dempster posted a 4.57 ERA in 29 starts, and about to enter the 2nd year of a 2 year $26.5M contract, that paid $13.25M per season.

Citing physical reasons, and desire to spend more time with his kids, Ryan didn’t pitch in 2014, and forfeited his entire $13.25M salary, after getting placed on the Restricted List.

They don’t make guys like that anymore. Much Respect.

      Too bad

I was going to say too bad he threw at Arod in the most intentional hit by pitch, I’ve seen in my life,
Not too bad he gave up his salary. This is a rare case, of player willingly giving up $$$, before placed on the Restricted List, that shouldn’t be expected too often.

Here’s the hit by pitch.. youtube.com/watch?v=Ngqeyfutg54

Why Dempster why… you gave up $13.25M to spend more time with your family… Easy guy to root for…

I believe Kang is still on the restricted list. he was just granted an exemption to play in the DWL. I haven’t seen that he got a work visa so I would assume he is still on the restricted list.

I’m hearing that this was a request made by Hosmer, he has an unsavory history with Torres. Padres announce the signing of Hosmer in the next 24 hours. Congratulations Padres fans!

I was going to point out that the union isn’t going to allow a player to be removed from a roster just because Eric Hosmer doesn’t like him…

…but then again, the MLBPA does have a history of ignoring the needs of it’s young and Latin players to focus on what’s best for a handful of high end free agent players.

Way to mindlessly and reflexively try to find racism in every single thing. Here’s your star.

Clark and the union sold the young (mostly Latin) players down the river with a hard cap on international signings in order to lessen the burden of the QO on a small handful of elite veteran players. This is fact.

If it was something serious we would have heard about it to some extent.

The fact there is no news is good news cause run ins w police domestic violence drugs etc you hear rumblings.

Most likely visa issues or something going on thatll take some time to sort out like family issues.

Worth noting that possession of a firearm is almost certainly a violation of his work visa terms, so even if nothing else moves forward criminally, he might not be able to remain in the country.
