Braves Activate Dansby Swanson, Option Matt Wisler

By Kyle Downing | May 19, 2018 at 10:36am CDT

The Braves have activated shortstop Dansby Swanson from the 10-day disabled list. In a corresponding move, they’ve optioned Matt Wisler to Triple-A Gwinnett.

Swanson hit the DL earlier this month due to left wrist inflammation. He was off to a solid start, hitting .289/.336/.430 prior to the injury, and the Braves will surely be hoping he can build on those numbers after a somewhat up-and-down start to his major league career. The former number one overall pick produced at about replacement level last season (according to fWAR) after a hot debut at the tail end of the 2016 season.

Swanson’s activation is likely to impact the playing time of Johan Camargo, Jose Bautista or both. Bautista has certainly been unimpressive to this point, posting a .143/.250/.343 slash line and serving as a defensive liability, but it’s fair to think he might get a longer look in the Braves’ lineup. Perhaps, then, Johan Camargo could slide into a utility role while the club waits to see if Bautista can heat up to his career norms.

Wisler has been shuttled back and forth multiple times already this season, most recently pitching 5 1/3 innings of two-run ball while striking out five Marlins. Once highly regarded enough to serve as the key return piece in the Craig Kimbrel trade, Wisler hasn’t lived up to expectations and now appears to be little more than a depth piece as multiple young starters have seemingly leapfrogged him on the depth chart.

Camargo to third till Riley is ready, Bautista to bench. If Riley isn’t working maybe trade for Machado depending on place in the standings. Also trade for a closer and we’ll be doing pretty well.

Atlanta isn’t trading for Manny, who does NOT want to play 3B.

Otherwise, I agree w/ your post.

And, I know we don’t need Machado. Thats’s Teixeira trade 2.0. No thanks.

I understand sending Wisler back down, but I just wish they’d end the Bautista experiment.

Bautista really hasn’t played 3B for a bunch of years, he lost his arm on an ill-advised hose from RF in 2015 and he’s no longer an everyday player. Age caught up.

Seriously? Aside from Touki, Anderson has the highest ceiling in the farm

Besides, Beltre is on the DL again with that bad hamstring injury!

I wouldn’t hate that idea. if Braves decide to go all in this year, they wouldn’t have to give up that much for Machado because he will be a free agent at the end of the year. 1 good prospect and 1-2 mid levels for half a season of Machado

I understand that Bautista is still sort of in virtual ST, but imo he needs to be in AA ball. I don’t want Riley impacted at Gwinnett, and I don’t think Bautista should be in the majors. Let him get 50 more at bats at AA and see where he’s at.

If we need a rental, I’d rather get Moose than Machado. I don’t think he’d cost as much, prospect-wise.

I’d have liked it if ATL signed Moose to a 2 year deal in offseason.

Ok you gotta give something to get something and Beltre would fit for a stretch run and be able to be resigned to hold down 3rd next year until Riley is ready. Point is 1/4 of the way thru the season & we can contend gotta make a push for it

Bautista is good for a 3r hr. Wiser may be nearing out of options. He shows he can go 5 innings, then tiires or hitters figure wisler out. Shown better promise this year than last.. someone may claim wisler the way things are going.

He can be optioned unlimited times the rest of the year.
