Cardinals Place Carson Kelly On 10-Day DL, Select Steve Baron

By Jeff Todd | May 17, 2018 at 2:28pm CDT

2:28 pm: Veteran righty Adam Wainwright is moving to the 60-day DL to create roster space, the team announced.

1:55pm: The Cardinals have placed catcher Carson Kelly on the 10-day DL with a hamstring injury, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports on Twitter. He’ll be replaced on the active roster by fellow backstop Steve Baron, which will mandate a still-undetermined 40-man roster move.

Kelly, 23, has long been seen as the heir apparent to Yadier Molina, who is himself on the shelf at the moment. But Kelly has struggled offensively in his limited MLB action over the past there years. This season, he has mustered only two singles in 19 plate appearances.

Francisco Pena has appeared in a dozen games, making him the most-used catcher other than Molina, who’s expected to be out until at least early June. In the meantime, Baron will help hold down the fort. The 27-year-old, a former first-round pick, has appeared briefly in the majors once before. He signed a minors deal with the Cards and was off to an ugly .153/.167/.186 slash in sixty plate appearances at Triple-A.

You have a typo in there say Molina is expected out until at least early ‘April’.

Sounds like Wainwright to the 60-day to make room on the 40-man for Bannon.

The Cards probably have a black hole at catcher now with Pena/Baron.

BTW, not to nitpick, but Molina isn’t expected to be out until at least early April. He should be back sometime in June I think.

Molina is out until early April, 2019? Or early August, 2018?

Kelly won’t be on this team in 2019. He’s awful and the Cards have over rated him. He will be traded.

If they’re adding to the 40-man anyway, why not Knizer? Who cares that he’s in AA?

Because the Meathead will just sit him and let him rot. Better for him to continue to get at bats in AA

Knizner defense is suspect. Hes got a lot to learn there. Kelly have very good defense, but his bat hasn’t progressed the way they’d like. I think I’m still higher on Kelly, because I prefer a catcher who can catch.

I really recommend that the writers on this site use grammarly. I don’t really care about the mistakes, but would be nice to not have multiple comments in most articles about it

        That’s on the readers.

If you are confused by a spelling error on a free site, or feel compelled to point it out over and over again, perhaps you should limit yourselfd to reading the daily newspaper dropped off at your door every morning, with no replacement until 24 hours later.

Often, a reserve catcher provides his most value by staying healthy. Wainwright was likely out 60, anyway. However, if another roster move is necessitated by a catching injury soon, they might lose real talent over injuries.

He’s on the dL because he’s not ready. The Cardinals should go after Swihart
