Rays Ask For Final Offers On Chris Archer

By Steve Adams | July 31, 2018 at 12:15am CDT

12:15pm: The Dodgers are also still “in play,” Jim Bowden of The Athletic tweets.

6:09pm: Despite some prior indications to the contrary, the Yankees remain involved in Archer’s market, per Andy Martino of SNY.tv (via Twitter). There are five additional clubs still involved as well, MLB.com’s Jon Morosi reports: the Padres, Braves, Brewers, and two unnamed organizations.

5:24pm: The Rays have asked interested teams to make their best and final offers for right-hander Chris Archer, reports Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. Tampa Bay has been in touch with roughly a dozen teams about Archer and could spend tonight and tomorrow morning reviewing those offers before ultimately making a call on whether to deal Archer.

It should be noted that it’s far from a certainty that Archer is dealt at all. There’s a mix in the tone of reports surrounding the possibility of an Archer trade that is likely reflective of the lack of an industry consensus on whether he’ll actually be traded. For instance, Joel Sherman of the New York Post tweets that there’s a stronger sense than ever before that Archer will finally move, as the Rays are cognizant that he’s approaching his 30th birthday and this may be their final chance to get an enormous haul for him.

On the flipside, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale spoke to one executive familiar with the market who took an “I’ll believe it when I see it” approach (Twitter link). ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick, meanwhile, spoke to an exec who said he still feels Tampa Bay will need to be “overwhelmed” and, despite years of rumors, still “[doesn’t] see it happening.”

The full slate of teams who have submitted (or plan on submitting) an offer for Archer isn’t yet known. Over the weekend, the Braves, Dodgers, Yankees and Cardinals were all connected rather prominently to Archer, though Fancred’s Jon Heyman tweeted today that the Yankees are viewed as an “unlikely” fit for Archer. Sherman added earlier today that the Pirates have jumped into the mix as well, while the Brewers and the Athletics have both at least touched base.

The Padres, meanwhile, have been rumored to be the most aggressive pursuing Archer, envisioning him as a rotation fixture in 2019 and beyond as San Diego emerges from its rebuild and aims to contend. Yahoo’s Jeff Passan wrote today that San Diego has been “especially engaged” in the Archer market, though he notes that the Friars have not yet been willing to meet Tampa Bay’s lofty asking price. Topkin wrote yesterday that a young catcher and controllable power-hitting outfielder would be “a good start” to a package from the Rays’ vantage point, though Tampa Bay will obviously be seeking numerous young pieces in return for three-plus years of the right-hander.

Archer, 29, obviously remains a popular trade target despite a month-long stint on the disabled list and some bottom-line results that haven’t lined up with his peripheral stats in recent seasons. That’s once again the case in 2018, as Archer is sitting on a 4.31 ERA despite possessing a 3.62 FIP and xFIP as well as a 3.75 SIERA. He’s averaged a strong 9.6 K/9 against 2.9 BB/9 with Tampa Bay this season and has made moderate gains in terms of swinging-strike rate (13.6 percent) and chase rate (32.3 percent). Archer is allowing just one homer per nine innings after struggling with the long ball in recent seasons, and he’s also boosted his ground-ball rate nearly three percent, from 42.0 up to 44.7.

Of course, the big draw with Archer is the affordability of his contract. He’s owed $2.o8MM through the end of the current season and is guaranteed just $7.5MM in 2019 before the Rays (or an acquiring team) have club options valued at $9MM and $11MM for the 2020 and 2021 seasons. In all, Archer can be controlled through 2021 for as little as $29.58MM, and in the event of a significant injury, he can be cut loose after 2019 and owed only a total of $11.33MM through the end of 2019.

Nothing wrong with Tampa as a city, although the Trop is a bit of a downer.. I think his point is that Archer has stagnated while pitching for the Rays. Maybe a fresh start somewhere else will re-invigorate him.

Excactly, it’s an automatic win for the Astros, game over for everyone else. They’re trading two unworthy prospects for our Lord and Savior. If the Rangers really want they could basically steal the Astros entire farm system, plus Altuve and Correa for Bartolo and even then it wouldn’t be enough, but we know the Rangers are desperate for prospects, so the least they’ll get is both Whitley and Tucker.

This gives me hope this is fair bidding process and Yanks do not have to pay a “division tax” for Archer Lol

It’s fun to dream. While, I think Archer is overrated, that contract [certainly] is not. Archer is a Great piece for any contendor, but seems like he will cost you an arm and a leg.

How do you figure this? After the draft your farm system was ranked around 10th overall. If you go by MLB prospects rankings Clark Schmidt and Trevor Stephan rank as your 7th and 8th. These are no teams #1 or 2 prospects. Not even the cubs and there horrible farm. If you go by Bleacher Report Acevedo and Tate Are 7th and 8th. Tate is gone for a rental player. Took him and 2 other players to get Britton. Orioles had a horrible farm system ranked 25th after draft. Tate is now there 6th best prospect. So again, how are your 7th or 8th ranked prospects a 1 or 2 in any system.

To be fair about the division tax, Tampa Bay said they just want a bit more from a division rival to make a trade. As they said that in a tie, their tie breaker would be to trade with a team out of the division.

Archer gets moved to either SD, LAD, or PIT.
SD and and LAD basically fighting against each other to give TB the better package – works out better for the Rays. Both have the prospect capital for the deal.
In PIT, Huntington will either go all in on Archer and give up Meadows + more. Or he might balk.

Rays want Renfroe from SD and Meadows from PIT

Don’t know why Cub fans are still hung up on him..been a major bust for the Ray. The Ray would have talent around him and he still would lose 15+ and have a ERA hovering 5 to 7..Someone is gonna get took and taken to the cleaners badly..Chris Archer is one of the worst pitchers in MLB.

He’s about league average, which I guess has a little value to a contender during the regular season. When the best things you can say about a pitcher are that he doesn’t s*ck and doesn’t cost too much, then it’s time to move on.

Exactly. That’s why ray and Nottingham are both in the deal. Adding a solid SP and 3B prospect will only sweeten the pot. Or you can change out Erceg for Lutz if they are set on OF prospects.

I’ll never understand how much hate Archer gets: HE’S AN ACE. There is no argument, he’s a top 10 guy for half a decade now. Being one of the 10 best pitchers in baseball automatically means you’re an ace. He is that. His career high FIP past 2014 is 3.81, and he’s at 3.48 for his career, meaning if he goes to Oakland, his ERA will be 2.50 or around there. Stop dinging him for playing in front of a crappy defense.

It’s so weird how much scrutiny he comes under, when he’s on a great contract and puts up quality innings every single season, meanwhile Homer Bailey is making $21M this year, and $23M next year. He’s just allowed to suck in peace and play out one of the worst contracts in baseball. Weird how success means hate, failure means no comment.

Not hated, just over-rated by some. His WAR ranks in the AL the last three years:

      2016 – 43
      2017 – 74
      2018 – 110

He might do better if he left Tampa, he might not. We are still waiting to see him pitch to his peripherals. It hasn’t happened in recent memory.

Comparing him to a worse pitcher on a worse contract doesn’t make him any better.

Bhambrave lol where did you get those war numbers from… firstly compare his war to other pitchers not batters.

Chris Archers 4.6 war in 2017 was good enough for tied for 9th best in all of MLB. Another pitcher with 4.6 Kershaw.

Some names behind him Jacob deGrom, Aaron Nola, Justin Verlander

I see the Dodgers being the team here. Freeman acquired Archer once before and signed him to his current team friendly contract. He sees the value in having Archer’s 200 innings locked up cheaply behind Kershaw and the flexibility it will give the Dodgers in pursuing free agents. A package of Verdugo, Smith and Gonsolin as the main return should get the Rays to bite.

Smitth or Ruiz would be the catching prospect and since they want a power hitting outfielder that’s controllable, dj Peters or jeren Kendall fit the discription better than verdugo does. Smith, peters, alverez seems reasonable to me

It’s funny because people are saying for the Padres to not trade for archer and that signing hosmer was so stupid but in the rebuild like they have you need some veteran pieces each rebuilt team that had success had veterans pieces so rn it might look dumb but say they are contending in 3 years or so those veteran pieces are gonna look good that’s facts

    Reply
    • marinest21 2

      1) Eric Hosmer has been worth 0.3 WAR this year
      2) Eric Hosmer is making $21 million this year
      3) Eric Hosmer is in the first year of a seven year contract.
      4) Eric Hosmer’s deal will take him through his age-35 season
      5) Rarely do players improve after age 30.

      Those are facts.

“those veteran pieces are gonna look good.”

That’s not a fact. That’s a subjective opinion you have based on the hypothetical event the Padres are good in 3 years.

The Rays want Gary Sanchez and Clint Frazier for Archer, but Frazier may be the untouchable here. From what they’ve seen of Sanchez (somewhere between Hall of Famer and train wreck) dealing him for Archer would be a good deal, but Frazier is the center fielder of the future, the answer to Brett Gardner leaving, or assuming a more limited role. Gardy is a free agent and resigning with NY he would have to accept being the 4th outfielder. There’s also a thought of OF prospects, plus Sanchez and Jacoby Ellsbury (with all of his remaining 75 million contract pre-paid) Archer is worth a Kings ransom, but not including Frazier. It would disrupt all Cashmans future plans.

Archer and Matt Duffey to Padres for Mejia, Baez or Allan, and Ornellas. Get a controllable front end starter until end of 21 and a 3rd baseman who hits for average until the end of 20. 2 positions Padres need if they plan on contending next year.
