Cubs Place Kris Bryant On 10-Day DL

By Jeff Todd | July 26, 2018 at 10:12am CDT

The Cubs have announced that third baseman Kris Bryant is heading to the 10-day disabled list with left shoulder inflammation. He’ll be replaced on the roster by infielder David Bote.

The move was made retroactive to July 24th, so Bryant will be eligible to return as soon as August 3rd. It’s not clear at this point, though, whether he’ll be in a position to do so. This is the second time that shoulder troubles have forced a respite.

There’s still no reason to believe that Bryant is dealing with a significant injury. Given that fact, along with the team’s position-player depth, there’s also no cause to think the move will impact the organization’s deadline plans.

Still, it hurts to lose a player who’s among the very best in the game. Bryant hasn’t hit quite at his prior levels thus far in 2018, but still sports a strong .276/.380/.474 batting line. He has been decidedly less productive since raking his way through the first two months of the season, so perhaps this layoff will help him get back in form for the stretch run.

It’s hardly the primary concern for all involved, but it’s worth noting that Bryant’s future arbitration earnings are now likely to take a hit based upon how the season has played out. He set out on a record-setting pace after receiving a whopping $10.85MM as a Super Two, so he’ll be building off of a big starting point. To this point in 2018, though, Bryant has only recorded 11 home runs and 44 runs batted in through 358 plate appearances, so his counting stats likely won’t support a major raise this winter.

Bryant and Rizzo haven’t been good/healthy all season and the Cubs are still in first. Shows how deep that lineup is.

Point taken, but they’ve both had stretches where they’ve been great.

They have both, especially Rizzo, had down stretches

He’s done, the Cubs should just cut him loose and move on…

That’s okay. Bote will probably hit three home runs this weekend. Get better soon, Kris.

Bryant is an exceptional talent and the best remedy against inflammations is rest. The Cubs should make sure that he’s ready for the postseason and refrain from bringing him back too early again. So far they’ve obviously been able to get themselves into a favorable position without much of his help.

injuries have crushed a lot of the NL. The brewers and dodgers both got hit pretty hard as well.

I actually like the roster better without Bryant. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a good hitter, but this kid definitely is missing the “clutch” gene.

It’s great that he can hit.285 when there’s no pressure, but if you can get it done when it counts, then what is your real value?

If runners are in scoring position, and Bryant is at-bat, there’s a reeeeeeeal good chance they aren’t going to score. I think their offense flows much better when he isn’t in there.

If I was Theo, I would definitely think real long and hard about exactly how much this cat is worth, and exactly how much value he brings to the team, come extension time.

He got the rally going in Game 5 of the ’16 World Series with a HR. The narrative that he isn’t clutch is a myth.

Absolutely–as Buck and Smoltz pointed out in the fifth inning of game 5…”the Cubs better score here” as they were an inning away from getting into the Indians pen that led the series 3-1 at that point.

And let’s not forget the bomb Bryant hit in game six and the game he had in game seven—scoring on a 210 foot sac fly and scoring from first on a single…and to get even more nitpicky hitting the ball to the wall in the 10th that helped set up the way the Indians handled that inning…walking Rizzo to face Zobrist.

There is really nothing more clutch than games 5, 6, and 7 of a World Series.

Define clutch as you wish—he had pretty nice games in much more important spots than certain regular season games.

Anecdotal, and an extremely small sample size. Proves nothing. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Of course all the biased Bryant fan girls are going to come out in support of their little crush who can do no wrong.

Anyone that consistently watches the Cubs will tell you he’s generally a whiff machine when the going gets tough.

A small sample size of anecdotal evidence doesn’t change that. When he’s out of the lineup, the offense has a much better flow to it.

It’s common knowledge what I’m saying. It isn’t some myth or hidden secret. He’s terrible with runners in scoring position.

Also, please refrain from commenting again, as you clearly don’t know what you’re talking about, and are just a biased little fan girl. .

Anyone know if an MRI was given for #17? Also a cortisone shot perhaps? I’m no doctor but rest only is going to do nothing if he has a small tear in his shoulder.

I think keeping Kris out for a bit is a good move to get the shoulder healed up.. He hasn’t seemed like the same hitter for the last few months between getting hit in the face and the shoulder. I have been wondering if that may be why he hasn’t hit much to right field this season as the shoulder was not allowing him to do it. The good news is the depth built with Bote, Happ and LaStella will allow the team to survive for however long he is out.

I was at that game where he was hit. I was in the rooftops at coors field. Didnt see it but I heard it. The pitcher immediately went down. Feeling so bad. I heard the pitcher reached out to him and apologized.

He needs to get his “meds” adjusted so he can stay healthy. Perhaps Dr. Canseco can help with that.
