AL East Notes: Estrada, Judge, Rays, Pirates

By Mark Polishuk | August 5, 2018 at 8:29pm CDT

Marco Estrada threw a gem for the Blue Jays on Saturday, allowing one earned run and just one hit while walking two and striking out four over seven innings against the Mariners.  As Sportsnet.ca’s Shi Davidi notes, “the outing is sure to renew [trade] interest in” Estrada’s services, as the right-hander spent most of July on the disabled list recovering from a glute strain and a minor blister issue.  It has been an inconsistent 2018 season for Estrada, though he was turning things around to the tune of a 2.35 ERA over five June starts before his injury problems cropped up.  Had Estrada stayed healthy, he almost surely would’ve joined J.A. Happ, Seunghwan Oh, and other veterans moved by the Jays as the team looks to rebuild for 2019 and beyond.  Toronto will continue to be a team to watch in the August trade market, given the presence of Estrada, Josh Donaldson, and others that could be enticing trade candidates if they can be worked through the waiver process.

Here’s more from the AL East…

  • Yankees slugger Aaron Judge gave reporters (including ESPN.com’s Coley Harvey) an update on his recovery from a chip fracture in his wrist, saying that he is still feeling some pain, though “some of the range of motion is coming back,” and he has been able to make short-range throws of up to five feet.  Judge was originally estimated to miss roughly three weeks, and while that timeline hasn’t officially changed yet, he has yet to begin taking dry swings.  On the plus side, Judge is participating in conditioning and running drills so he’ll theoretically be able to make a quick return once his wrist is ready.
  • The Rays were one of baseball’s busiest teams during trade deadline season, and Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times provides a recap on all of the club’s dealings.  With salaries always a concern in Tampa, the Rays now have only a bit over $8MM committed to their 2019 payroll, all owed to Kevin Kiermaier via the outfielder’s multi-year contract.  Topkin calculates that between the minimum salary players, Kiermaier, and arbitration-eligibles Tommy Pham and Matt Duffy (but not C.J. Cron), the Rays may have approximately $25MM in payroll for 2019.  Even if the Rays won’t approach even their modest $70MM payroll from the start of this season, they’ll still have some room to spend on upgrades this winter.  In regards to Cron, Topkin thinks his home run total could push his arbitration number beyond the Rays’ comfort zone, so the first baseman could potentially be a trade candidate or maybe even a non-tender candidate despite his solid season.
  • Also from Topkin’s piece, the player to be named later acquired by the Rays from the Pirates in the Chris Archer trade still isn’t known, and the mystery prospect may not change organizations until the minor league season ends.  Indeed, Pirates GM Neal Huntington said today during his radio show (hat tip to MLB.com’s Adam Berry) that “nothing’s imminent” about the players to be named later involved in the Archer trade and also in the trade with the Rangers for Keone Kela.

Estrada is frustrating cause he can look so dominant and have a top 10 changeup in baseball yet implode at any moment

Rays should sign Harper and Machado at the same time this off-season. If it doesn’t work out, sell the team. It’s a crappy baseball area anyway and it would take something of that magnitude to ignite the proper excitement.

It must be so tough being a Rays fan, They do so well with the resource they are given, but they’re a Major League Team and pennies shouldn’t be pinched to that level. The perpetual cycle of shipping players off for young assets is tiresome – especially when young and controllable assets are shipped out one way or another anyway.

Imagine if they actually had a modest budget, and the resources to expand some of their staff, scouts, etc.

What they are able to do, with so little absolutely fascinates me, especially in the AL East, which is dominated with several extremely high payrolls…

Everyone thought it was Joe Maddon that allowed the Rays to be so innovative and successful, despite their ridiculously low budget..Yet, Joe leaves, and the Rays are still on the forefront of some new trends in MLB…

So who exactly is the mastermind, baseball genius that’s been able to keep the Rays afloat, despite them having to basically rebuild every two years??

Eh- it has had it’s up and downs but it’s got a bright future. We’ve got so many prospects we could build an entire team- and we have. Research our prospect farm and we are lined up to have a playoff competitive team within the next 4 years. Depending on how much they develop maybe a world series.

Cron should not be above the Rays comfort zone in terms of salary. They might decide to move him based on having Jake etc playing 1st base. He should have a trade market regardless.

In regards to signing Harper or Machado I do not think either should be considered. 10years $25+mil for either player? I would focus instead on the 2nd tier market & pick up some Veterans on short term contracts that are not getting a lot of offers.

The Rays are a terrible organization with probably the leagues worst stadium. They have never had the all star game and never will. They came into the league in 1998 and have never drawn any fans even when they relevant. It’s sad that they always get rid of any players making $$$.

It isn’t their fault…I solely blame the city and people of Tampa Bay and their location..

The Rays have done more with less than any and every other team in MLB..HECK, look at their record this year, yet look at their payroll and roster…It’s nothing short of a miracle what the Rays are able to do on a yearly basis..

The baseball fans in and around the city of Tampa should be absolutely ashamed of themselves, and they quite frankly don’t deserve the Rays..Move them to Montreal or Oklahoma City and watch this franchise flourish!!

Go back to New York and Boston if you love those teams so much, we don’t want you in Tampa!

If I was moving to LA temporarily then no I would not change, if I was going to be living the rest of my life there then yes I would adopt my new hometown team. We have New Yorkers who have been living in Tampa for over 20 years and still rooting for Yankees, it’s no wonder it’s dofficult to get traction with fans. Takes a generation to create new fans here. And I admit that we have had some of the worst owners in sports in Naimoli and now Sternberg which has not help to endear themselves to fans.

No offense, but you’re essentially making part of the point you’re arguing against. A lot of fans of teams like the Red Sox, the Yankees, the Cubs, the Phillies, the White Sox, to some extent the Mets, etc are generational fans. There’s history there that cannot be replicated. So when a fan of these teams moves to another city they’re going to take the love of the team and basically an identity with them.

It’s up to Tampa Bay’s owners to figure a way to work around that.

The past team in montreal struggled for many different reasons.

The fans not coming out wasnt due to lack of baseball interest. They stopped coming due to the strike #1. Montreal had the best record in baseball that year. And the jays were looking to 3peat (although they had some work to catch the yankees that year if i remember right) that strike angered the fans sufficiently to not support the product anymore. And rightfully so.

Then loria took over. Refused to build a new stadium which upset the fans further. Then used the “fans dont care” excuse to move the team to Washington and make a boatload of money.

Its hardly the fans fault. And im not an expos fan by any stretch. Born and raised in Toronto.

But having watched it all go down in real time i can assure you if you built a new stadium and had a semi decent owner. Baseball would thrive in montreal

Turner – glad you mentioned you are from Toronto. Automatically tells me you are a Leaf fan which means you are out to lunch when it comes to baseball.

Facts do not lie when it comes to baseball interest in Montreal, the ability to find a suitable place for a new stadium, how to pay for it, and why Montreal over other American markets.

          – People of Montreal do not care about baseball any more than the 30 cities that currently hold a team, including Tampa.
          – Montreal struggled to break a million people. With a stadium located above a subway stop they still could not draw a million people. That’s unacceptable.
          – Very few places to put a new Stadium in Montreal. Besides, Tampa still draws better than Montreal did their last 10+ years in the city. Tampa also has a better economy and real sports fans.
          – They are one of the most fiscally irresponsible Provinces in Canada. Tax dollars for a baseball stadium that won’t sell out every game? Forget it.
          – Bigger and better American markets currently without a team. They deserve first crack at a major league ballclub.

Sorry to dissapoint you. But im very much and always have been a jays fan over the leafs and a raptors fan ahead of the leafs. Yes i watch the leafs but not a diehard like most Torontonians

It goes jays raptors leafs Argos tfc in that order

And to finish. Im not saying mtl would be a #1 baseball city. The habs will always be #1.

But to say its 100% the fans fault is false.

They sold out jays games in mtl. Thats how much they want baseball back

If you understand the dynamic between Toronto and montreal then you understand the significance of that alone.

They would support a well run franchise. They did support a well run franchise.

The stadium was falling apart even before the fanbase stopped going.

You cant expect people to pay to go to a deathtrap and watch a subpar product with owners ripping off the fans at every chance.

I feel for montreal baseball fans. No matter how badly the jays do or play ill always support my team. As id be heartbroken if the jays got moved to utah or New Mexico etc

I am going to agree with you Turner on some points and with Trim on others.

I was brought up in Montreal and went to Expos games in Jarry Parc from ’69-’72 before the family moved out to Ontario. I would return to see Expos games every year for a weekend.

As others have said, the Olympic Stadium was a dump, even the seats where awful to sit in. They had great food though. The Park was in a terrible location. Subway is irrelevant. Montreal’s money doesn’t take the subway.

That leaves ownership. As soon as the Bronfmans sold out to Loria, the Expos were doomed. Loria’s plan was money the whole time and moving the club if necessary was the plan.

Would baseball succeed in Montreal again? No question it would. Has to have a good owner and downtown stadium or it will fail.

There is a bigger problem for baseball expansion though. There is not enough pitching talent now for all the franchises, adding franchises will only make the situation worse and dilute the talent base. It will be like watching AAA games.

          – They sold out the Toronto games because Toronto people drove up the highway to attend the games.

          – I never said 100% of fans. Did 100% ever get said in my first comment? No. But there is a much smaller fanbase in Montreal than most Canadians think.

          – The dynamic between Toronto and Montreal fans is simple; Montreal has less fans. Also a smaller population.

          – Didn’t break 2-million fans after 1983. Didn’t stay above the league average after 1983. What a fanbase!!

          – You never addressed the poorly run city with economic challenges. Montreal asking Quebec or Canada to pay for a stadium they can’t find a suitable location for would be a total waste for taxpayers.

Expos are like the ex-girlfriend. You think about all the good times and forget why you broke up with her in the first place. Reunited wouldn’t be so good.

Can’t be much worse than the Oakland Coliseum.

One of the biggest problems with the Trop is the location. If the Rays actually played in Tampa, the ballpark would be more easily accessible and draw in more fans than in St. Pete.

Location is just an excuse to get the taxpayers to pay for a new stadium. Its easily accessible from the highway. The seats are extremely comfortable, the walkways are wide but the owner sells off the stars. That’s the problem.

Fenway is a pain in the butt to get to. Parking is outrageous, Seating comfort and sight lines are horrible, walkways are narrow. And that’s before you get to the price of tickets.

How far is the Trop from downtown Tampa? 20 minutes? Big whoop.

If he only thing that changes is the location of the stadium, it will do nothing for attendance in Tampa.

You forgot the junkie southies in Boston begging for change outside the stadium, hoping to support their drug habbit. What a sewer.

I love how you’re commenting on the logistics of a multi million dollar franchise, like your opinions have an impact. Get a job.

I went to a rays game in Tampa once and it was the most relaxing game I’ve been to. I surprisingly liked the stadium. I wouldn’t want it as my home team’s stadium but if you’ve never been to the trop, don’t not go because the stadium isn’t great looking.

Totally agree. I go to the Trop once or twice a year. I can stay at the Don Ceasar in St Petes Beach for a night, buy four tickets and its still cheaper than going to Fenway.,

After seeing Sunday night 9th inning mess vs Boston, Byrd as a 1st baseman with the glove is a liability ! Andújar throw should have been caught by a better glove. Manager needs to recognize when Chapman is off, no first pitch strikes. 3 walks in 9th unacceptable! We were totally outclassed this 4 game series! Time to wake up!

Outclassed and made to look foolish all around. Which is great to see after all the Yankees fans acting like this team was some kind of World Series bound juggernaut. Now they’re sitting 9.5 games back in their own Division with the A’s hot on their tail for the first WC spot.

“Manager needs to recognize when Chapman is off” and what after 1-2 batters pull him, that’s not how managing a BP works.

Tough series for NY and their fans. You’re right. Time to take a good look in the mirror.

On to the White Sox where they will get well in a hurry.

One good start has Estrada back on the map? No. Estrada will not be taken seriously unless his next 2 starts are good.

I agree with Trim. Estrada needs a couple of starts to prove he is back healthy.

In spring training I called Estrada’s first DL stint to be at 55 innings, It took 83. He is older and fragile. And if anything is hurt, pulled, broken or sore in this guy he cannot get over the top of his delivery consistently and thus loses his command and he gets hammered.

When he is right, he is a money pitcher. The only question a GM needs to ask is, is he right and healthy and how long will he last?

I am hoping he has 2 more great starts and the Jays can move him for a very good prospect not just inventory.
