Quick Hits: Realmuto, Marlins, Astros, Red Sox, Angels, Eloy

By Connor Byrne | August 5, 2018 at 4:36pm CDT

Along with the previously reported Nationals, the Astros had interest in Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto prior to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe. Both teams’ interest in Realmuto dates back to at least last offseason, but neither they nor anyone else have been able to pry the star backstop out of Miami. Instead of Realmuto, the Astros ended up acquiring the much less exciting Martin Maldonado from the Angels before the deadline. He’s backing up Max Stassi, who has emerged as the Astros’ starter since Brian McCann underwent knee surgery a month ago. Stassi got off to a great offensive start this year before cooling off significantly over the past couple months, though he is having an elite season behind the plate.

  • The Red Sox inquired about Marlins closer Kyle Barraclough before the deadline, but Boston ultimately “backed off,” Cafardo writes. Barraclough wound up staying with the Marlins, who placed a high asking price on the flamethrowing right-hander. The 28-year-old hasn’t been good of late, as his ERA has skyrocketed from .99 to 3.28 since the beginning of July, but he still comes with a quality track record and affordable team control. As a result, the Marlins elected to keep Barraclough, who will make his first of three possible trips through arbitration during the winter.
  • In an interestingly timed move, the Angels announced Sunday that special assistant Eric Chavez will manage their Triple-A team in Salt Lake for the rest of the season. Previous manager Keith Johnson will finish the year on the Angels’ coaching staff, and GM Billy Eppler said Sunday that the Halos want him to work with their young infielders (Twitter link via Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times). The decision to replace Johnson with Chavez raised eyebrows, though, given that the latter has come up as a potential replacement for Angels skipper Mike Scioscia, who’s reportedly going to retire at the end of the season. The 40-year-old Chavez, a longtime major league third baseman, had never managed at any level until the Angels handed him the Triple-A reins.
  • Standout White Sox outfield prospect Eloy Jimenez is “getting really close” to earning a major league promotion, director of player development Chris Getz said Sunday (via 670 The Score, on Twitter). The 21-year-old Jimenez, whom Baseball America, MLB.com and FanGraphs all regard as the game’s third-best prospect, has hit an astounding .376/.425/.679 with eight home runs and a .303 ISO in 120 plate appearances since the White Sox moved him to Triple-A Charlotte in late June.

Why is Realmuto on the team this is most likely going to be the best season of his career… catchers don’t age well and Realmuto will most likely lose some of his power when he hits 30, similar to Posey.

MLBTR and the rest of the baseball sports media gets fixated on a player, and the readers / commentators play along.

I’m so old I remember 2 weeks of “Which team will Hanley Rameriz wind up with?” daily after the Red Sox released him……and surprisingly the Sox somehow are carrying on without him. Stunning.

Sox had an infield of 3 journymen and a utility player start the other night. Mookie then came in to replace Kinsler. And they won.

Nunez, Holt, Kinsler and Pearce. Go figure. Makes me think back to 2013

Do you know how arrogant AND rediculous you sound at the same time? First you think that what you say about Ramirez makes you sound old and experienced. But worse than that you mention how ALLLLLL the media, commentators and readers play along..except for you of course. You are the one voice of reason where there is no other shouting into the wind of stupidity.

I’m a Sox fan and my fingers are crossed tonight. We’ll take 3 of 4 but if price shows up that’s just a bonus.

Sox are the hottest team on both sides of the field right now. Bullpen top 10, offense top 5, starters been doing well. Looking good for the stretch run but like I said fingers crossed.

Looks like the injury bug is catching them now but hopefully it’ll pass and everybody’s ready to go for the stretch.

Only concerns Gary are injuries and bullpen walks. As great a year as this team has had, it means nothing without a championship. 2013 might have been a far weaker club than 03 yet they won. If it weren’t for 04, the pain from 03 would still be in New England.

Too me Eduardo is the key I’m not really sure most people know how good he was pitching when he went down. He was on a 19 inning dominant scoreless streak. They really need him to be that guy in the post season. To me he is the key and of course a healthy Sale goes without saying Sale has to be healthy and firing for the Sox to make it through post season.

Price has had trouble with NY this year. Sonny has trouble with every team including the watered down O’s. But he is available in the pen tonight.

July 16, 2017. Price vs Tanaka, Sunday night baseball at Fenway

Still a good line up. Every team has injuries. Sox have 1/3rd of their regulars out (Vasquez, Pedie and Devers), multiple starting pitchers have been on the DL just about the whole year and one, Sale missed his start this time around and he’s as good as anyone in either league. Betts and Bogie have also missed short stretches. Of course Judge being out hurts but there is enough talent pn the club to overcome it.

Didi has been good vs Price. Sanchez killed him, Judge as well. With those two big RH bats out of the lineup, Price should be fine.

I think the script reads that Scioscia is retiring at the end of the season, but I seriously doubt he’s down with that program. Angels are setting the stage, and it’s pretty clear they don’t intend to offer him a renewal contract. Scioscia can exit gracefully by “retiring”.

Yes, that is what seems to be playing out.

I’m guessing the news leaked out of Arte’s office. Scioscia did not know or like it and confronted. He was probably filled in on what is going on. Now Johnson is up for no reason other than the possibility Scioscia will choose to leave early instead of going with the graceful exit opportunity (or depending on how that meeting went, that graceful exit opportunity might have even turned into an early firing)

Maddon would have to pull a Grady Little to get fired. His philosophy aligns perfectly with what Theo is trying to accomplish. I don’t see Girardi meshing like that.

Maddon is signed thru next season. Now it’s very possible he may not be extended depending on what happens later this year.

Exactly. Growing up in Peoria makes you either a Cub fan or a Cardinal fan and you develop a deep rooted hatred for the other.

I always get a chuckle when I hear Cardinals fans saying they are getting Girardi next year. There is as much chance of that as there is of him managing the Red Sox.

Why in the world would Duquette want the job as GM of the Mets if he losses the job with the Orioles? 2 of the most meddling owners in the game now with Georgie gone.

Cherington is a good fit for the Mets. If they were to make the PoBO position available they might be able to tempt Jed Hoyer to take the job.

True Henry owns the Globe. FALSE he gives orders to the GM regarding how the team is ran, FA signs etc.. If that was true? Former Tigers owner Iltch and many others would be included.. Which I purposely did not as they were/are not meddling.

Wilpon, Angelos family and of course Georgie go/went out of their way to counteract their respective GM’s, many times to the detriment of their respective team(s), much like Charlie “O did.

We are lucky to have JH as an owner. DD has total control as long as he stays within budget or requests to go over. As it should be.

If I owned the team, I’d want to know when 100,000,000 plus of my dollars were going to be spent as well

Moreno is a meddler as well. That Pujols contract never should have happened.

I go to a lot of Charlotte Knights games and Eloy looks like the real deal. He is outplaying his competition easily. I’m not a scout but just based on the eye-test of having watches him in person in about 20 games this year, he looks ready
