Jeffrey Jeff, this was an insightful chat. To me you are right on about the salary thing. No one advocates for minor-league ball players, most of whom got small signing bonuses and not much more. (Sadly, hardly anyone advocates for teachers either, but at least they can organize. Minor leaguers cannot.)

Also kudos on discoursing on the example that Heimlich represents.
Everyone has feet of clay, and that includes sports stars. We can cheer for them within reason, yes; we can recognize that many of them do give back to the greater community and good causes, yes; but we don’t need to idolize them, overlook their personal faults, fawn over them, or advocate for their “rights”, which are in fact privileges.
And to those who notice that here I am advocating for minor-leaguers rights, I said “sports stars” don’t need advocates. The other 98 percent (and teachers) do.

I have a question… Andrew Miller, could he move to the rotation? He might make more as a starter and now that starters can get away with pitching to only one batter… well, you know. Starters aren’t expected to throw 9 innings any more… he could give you a solid 5 innings every 5 days. Maybe?

He hasn’t been a starter since 2011, and he’s had injury concerns the last few years. That would be a major risk to try and move him to the rotation.

What exactly is uncool about going to your daughter’s soccer game? I think it’s very cool, Jeff!

4:38 Prospect wise pure baseball where does he rate? At some point the kid deserves to move on from a crime / Mistake of his childhood.
    Jeffrey Todd
4:39 Y’know, there are plenty of fields that become closed off if you do certain things. Our choices have consequences. I teach my kids that.
4:40 It could be that it is acceptable that organizations that hire athletes to perform and entertain for the public will not put him in their uniforms and on their fields in front of millions of spectators.
4:41 I’m not going to spend much time on this, but it sort of drives me nuts that some people (not necessarily the person that asked this) think it’s worth so much of their time and energy to advocate for him and act like he’s aggrieved. He got a degree from a university and was a star player there. He can do other things. Hopefully he really has learned from whatever happened. But why is he deserving of this outpouring when there are so many others so much worse off … including many people wrongly convicted, etc, who don’t have the social status to get back on their feet at all?

simple: he’s a born again christian. if he did what he did and was any other religion (or none at all), the same people vouching for him would NEVER, NEVER let him get a second chance (look at any comment section when stuff like this happens. you get tons of fundies wanting the guy dead…. unless its one of them, then you either get silence or the typical “not a real christian” comments).

so sorry folks, he molested a 6 year old, pleaded guilty to it, still got to go to college, for free, and get a degree. plenty of people have done much lower crimes and have never been given a second chance.

he’s 23, got a degree (and zero debt to get it, by the way). sucks he can’t play pro ball, but hey, as fundie nut jobs love to say “life’s not fair”

the point about the comparison between teachers (or police, firemen or military) vs baseball players is fair. in fact, the vast majority aren’t making even close to these others. sure, if you make it to the show, you’re gonna make great money. but the odds are incredibly against you. same in other professions. for every tom cruise there are thousands of actors working at dinner or local theatre while waiting tables. for every singer like Kanye or Beyonce there are thousands singing in nightclubs or making records. for every tim allen, there are hundreds of people at club chuckles hoping just for a shot on the tonight show.
