NL West Notes: Rockies, Myers, Hundley

By Steve Adams | October 18, 2018 at 11:01pm CDT

In looking ahead to the future of the Rockies’ outfield, Kyle Newman of the Denver Post suggests that the Rockies are likely to move Charlie Blackmon, whose defensive ratings in center field plummeted in 2018, to left field in favor of David Dahl next season. The two appear to be locks to be in the Colorado outfield next season regardless of alignment, given Dahl’s outstanding finish to the season. The 24-year-old former top prospect hit .273/.325/.534 with 16 homers in 271 plate appearances in the Majors last year, including a ridiculous .287/.330/.655 slash with nine homers in the season’s final month. In a second column looking at the rotation, Newman’s colleague, Patrick Saunders, notes that right-hander Jon Gray drew trade inquiries at the deadline, but the Rockies opted not to sell low on their Opening Day starter. Gray, the No. 3 pick in the 2013 draft, undeniably has electric raw stuff, but he’s yet to consistently tap into his front-of-the-rotation upside in parts of four big league seasons. He’s controlled through 2021, though, so he’d be an incredibly in-demand commodity in the event that the Rox do at least listen to offers this winter.

Here’s more from the division…

  • MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell looks at four options the Padres have in their Wil Myers dilemma this offseason: play Myers regularly at third base, move him back to the outfield, bounce him between multiple positions or trade him (and likely eat some of the remaining $74MM on his contract in the process). Myers didn’t rate well at third base in his limited time there this past season, though the slugger expressed confidence that he’d be able to improve dramatically with more reps. A move back to the outfield is difficult with Hunter Renfroe, Franmil Reyes and Franchy Cordero each already representing corner-only options, though Cassavell notes that it’s possible the Friars shop one of Renfroe or Reyes. The team’s initial hope in moving Myers to the hot corner was that he could rotate between multiple positions, but he’s unlikely to improve to the point where he’s not a liability if he doesn’t get fairly regular work there. It’s a tough spot for the Padres, who figure to have some outfielders for sale this offseason regardless of the direction they take.
  • Buster Posey’s hip surgery makes it a “pretty good bet” that Nick Hundley will return to the Giants for a third season in 2019, writes Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area. While Aramis Garcia’s September play encouraged many in the organization, bringing Hundley back into the fold would allow the Giants to either get Garcia everyday at-bats in Triple-A early in the season or to serve as Hundley’s backup if Posey isn’t ready to begin the season. Interestingly, Pavlovic adds that some members of the organization can even envision Hundley, who has become one of the more popular figures in the clubhouse, managing the Giants in the future. The 35-year-old Hundley hit .241/.298/.408 with 10 home runs in 305 plate appearances with San Francisco in 2018.

Hundley is clutch when you need him to be, and never seems to really get into a slump. He’s always consistent. One of the best backup catchers in the league.

Grandal and Barnes both better than Hundley….both on Dodgers….many teams backups are just as good as Hundley or better….but Hundley got more action than most backup catchers due to Posey being out for so long….therefore padding his numbers….

Hundley is an above average backup catcher. He’s easily in the top 10 backups. He can field and swing the stick decently for a catcher.

Padres need to trade their OF depth and pitching depth to clear 40 man spots.

Reyes yates stammen nix could be used to being back a cost controlled asset from a contender. I mean nationals could offer up Carter kieboom as the centerpiece in a deal for Reyes or renfroe if they don’t resign Harper plus yates stammen nix and another pen piece like castillo. Then lock up rendon- sure up the pen- and add a 3 or 4 starter cheap in nix.

    Assuming they don’t resign Harper.

Nats wouldn’t want Renfroe or Reyes. They’ve already got one of the game’s better OF’s with or without Harper.

The nationals have at least 3 outfielders better than Reyes or Renfroe. If you add in Harper that’d make an even 4. You could even argue MAT is the fifth.

Let’s see Reyes or Renfroe put up an entire major league season that is better than Eaton. Hell, let’s see Renfroe or Reyes put up a better year than MAT has. I’ll take Robles over that pair anyday but yeah we can wait on that. Power hitting below average defense, strikeout prone outfielders aren’t the hardest thing to find. That’s why SD is looking to dump them because they have too many.

How about Myers for Teheran & prospects who don’t need 40 man protection. It’s a 1 yr with an option for Teheran at 11 million vs 4 years at 63 for Myers. Both guys really need to move to help the prospective rebuilds move forward to the next stage. Myers doesn’t have a place to pay & Teheran might not have a spot to pitch. Change of scenery for both guys.

Renfroe and Reyes both put up more WAR than MAT this season. Eaton has them all beat, but he still missed over a third of the season with injuries. As for Robles, he didn’t even do enough to convince the Nats to bring up him before the September roster expansion. He is still very much a suspect and it will stay that way until he proves he can hack it in the Majors.

lol Robles was hurt all year. He only managed 196 ABS in the minors as he recovered from surgery and they had no need to burn service time on Robles with Eaton, MAT, Soto and Harper all present on the big league roster. MAT in 2017 posted a 3 fwar season which would top Reyes and Renfroe easily when he was given a full time Starting job. I never claimed he was better than renfroe or reyes but he’s certainly comparable and that’s not a stretch by any means. Robles was worth .5 WAR in 66 ABS where he showed off all 5 of his tools. Not that a small sample size like that says a whole but the pedigree is there. I’ll take him anyday over a pair of strikeout prone corner OFers who don’t have much on their own resumes to begin with.

Robles’ pedigree proves absolutely nothing. Better prospects than him bust all the time. Let’s see him produce in the Majors over a significant sample size before we go printing tickets for his induction into Cooperstown. Even Renfroe produced 0.6 WAR in 36 PA’s as a September callup in 2018. He put up 1.6 in 2018 and it would have been higher if the defense didn’t hurt him.
Clearly the Nats aren’t confident in him otherwise he’d have been called up once he came off the DL. Your service time excuse doesn’t work considering they called up Juan Soto who is even younger than Robles. Also, if they were confident in Robles, they wouldn’t even think about re-signing Bryce Harper. You know Robles will have to be traded if they bring back Harper.

Lol you love arguing. He was injured when Soto was called up buddy. How are you going to call up an injured player????? Soto was destroying major league baseball before Robles was back on the diamond. You’re ranking two one dimensional corner outfielders over Robles because Robles doesn’t have enough MLB abs. If that’s the logic you want to use that’s fine but don’t try and throw in other reasons that are completely false. You obviously had no idea about the situation and your Soto comment shows that ignorance.

Your punching a ticket to Cooperstown comment is completely laughable. Renfroe and Reyes isn’t much of a bar to hurdle. Your original post said and I quote “the nationals wouldn’t want reyes or Renfroe. Seeing as they have one of the games better outfields.” That would tell me you too truly believe Robles is the better player but yeah keep on fighting it with nonsense like Soto was chosen over him.

You also love arguing, but whatever. I know he was injured when Soto was called up. If the Nationals had any confidence in him at all they would have called him up when he came off the DL, not put him in AAA. Don’t say they were worried about service time because if that were the case they wouldn’t have called up a 19-year-old who had barely played above A-ball.
Renfroe has hit in the Majors over a relatively significant sample size. Reyes is a little behind him but still spent the better part of the 2018 season in the Majors. Robles hasn’t done that YET and until he does you don’t know that he is better than Renfroe or Reyes. However, Robles has done enough in the minors to warrant the Nats giving him an actual chance and not trading for guys who would block him at the Major League level. Similarly, the Padres aren’t looking to trade for any outfield prospects even if some of them do project to be better than Renfroe or Reyes.

That’s funny that’s your stance on Robles considering you berate any move the padres make with a negative impact on service time. You certainly don’t call Robles up to be a part time player on a team with 3-4 productive major league outfielders after missing the bulk of the season. You definitely let him play everyday and there’s really no argument there.

Robles had already missed enough time to have his free agency pushed back a year. If they want to push it back another year they will have to keep him in the minors until like next June.
If the Nats sign Harper there will never be room for Robles to play every day.

SF: with same mgr AGAIN it’s stupid to have young players – he won’t play em. Unless new GM comes in and tells him to.
SD: Be nice to dump Myers but teams are not buying into that anymore – Hosmer is contract that really stinks. But if either have monster season maybe one of the big spenders take one off your hands if you include youngster or two.
Nats: Sosa Robles Eaton Taylor will take the con – Harper wants to much to long Nats not going up in payroll.

Unfortunately, even if the GM tells him to he won’t. Pretty sure that’s how he left SD. Posey only got a chance because of injury. All of our core players only began playing regularly because of injury or not signing, sending away other options. Bochy stumbled into 3 WS with the Giants. It’s easy to look good when the players are doing well and guys like Bumgarner are setting records for lowest WS ERA. This shift needed to happen after 2015, and everyone swept out including Bochy, but that’s a hard sell after 3 titles in 5 years.

“Posey only got a chance because of injury.”

That is just flat wrong. Posey was called up while Bengie Molina was the starting catcher. Posey played 1B and caught on Molina’s off day. When Posey demonstrated that he could handle a major league pitching staff, something no one with half a brain would assume, Molina was traded to Tex.

Also, Posey made it to the majors much quicker than most catchers, who need more development than other positions. It was also claimed that Posey was kept down due to service time issues, which was completely false; Posey was a super-two.

Posey finished the 2010 season with 171 days of Major League service time. You need 172 to gain a full year. There’s no way that wasn’t by design.

Maybe something like Kyle Mueller and Tristan Beck for Renfroe. I don’t think a guy like Demeritte is going to do much in trade value. Adding Stammen might swap one of those guys for Allard/Gohara. Myers return would have to be balanced by the amount of salary the Padres would or would not cover.

Getting to a more hitter friendly park may help Renfroe hit a couple more dingers. Guys with his skill set aren’t that difficult to find but the Braves lineup could use some punch in the corner. He cut his K rate a bit and if he’s able to shave that down a bit more there might be a little upside there. Wouldn’t be sending a top pitching prospect for him but the braves have no shortage of interesting arms ranked a little Lower

SF biggest mistake was signing Belt to a long term deal for a hefty price. Not to say Belt is a bad player. That’s not the case.

The reason is Buster Posey. Posey should be playing more 1B and probably catching 2-3 times a week. At some point Giants management had to figure out how to scale back Posey’s work behind the plate to prolong his production. I don’t watch Belt in the OF enough to say if he can play there. From what I’ve read, he can’t.

This is the proverbial elephant in the room. Giants need to decide how much they want to protect Posey and if someone would be willing to deal for Belt. Tall order as very few are looking to deal for a 1B.

Posey’s value is behind the plate. He at catcher is a big reason for the 3 WS titles. He has a lot less value at 1B. If you want your best chance to win you put the best team on the field, and Posey catching is where you start. Posey at 1B is not the best team to field. Use your assets for the most value. Trying to protect those assets by not using them for the greatest value for fear of losing them is completely wrong headed.

Myers makes some sense for the Braves. A right handed power bat that can play right field or left. It all depends on price of course but the Braves are most likely to trade foe their next outfielder

Maybe, but that’s an expensive gamble. SD isn’t going to pay a whole lot on his remaining $70MM+ and he’s a liability in the OF. There are some options ranging from expensive to doable this FA year: Harper, Pollock, Brantley, McCutchen (Markakis) that would be upgrades offensively and defensively to Myers in a COF spot – and they wouldn’t take the presumed prospects to obtain (even when factoring in giving up a pick for a FA that turned down a QO). To me, Myers makes more sense to a team in need of a 1B that could keep him on the field more.

I agree on the 1B comment

Also I don’t think the Padres will have to eat any of the contract; he has slugged over .500 away from Petco in ’17 & ’18.

A large market team that pushes the luxury tax threshold will be interested because his actual salary is 5M, 22, 22, 22 & option but his tax hit is 13.8 for 4 yrs (then the option if its picked up). Yankees? I

Having said that…Renfroe may be more sought after

I’m guessing the Padres would pay quite a bit of it to ship Myers off. and wouldn’t require much of anything prospect-wise, maybe some random low A-ball lottery ticket.

Myers isn’t a liability in the OF. He was well above replacement level defensively in LF and RF.

No he isn’t. The ONLY position Myers is only slightly above average is LF. He IS a liability (below average) at every other position he’s plated.

He outproduced Renfroe and Reyes on a WAR basis despite having a largely inferior OPS. Indicates to me that his defense provided some value.

Coming from the guy who argued Adam Rosales was a better player than Wil Myers because his WAR was higher.

WAR is a meaningless pseudo stat.

And I’ll vote on posts based on whether or not I agree with the opinion. Often I don’t even look who made the post. Apparently, acceptance is important in your world. Is that why you try to argue with everybody?

LOL where did I say Adam Rosales was better than Wil Myers? Drop a link. And according to Fangraphs Wil Myers doubled Adam Rosales’ WAR in 2016.
Anyway, everything I’ve read says that Myers has been a net positive on defense at both corner OF spots and at 1st base. The other 2 positions he never should have been played at in the first place and only did so out of need.

They wouldn’t have to pay the “bulk” of the money owed because Myers contract is only like $15m AAV. from here until the end of it (plus a $1M buyout) and when he’s healthy he plays around as well as a $15m AAV player typically plays in free agency.

They’re not gonna pay $30+m to move Myers because Myers is worth more than that just playing here. You’re talking like $15m, maybe.

          Ah, gotcha

I’m not sure they even have to do that if they take a marginal prospect or maybe taking a one year contract back to off set some of the future money.

Bring Gyorko back to SD from the Cardinals (13m) and not pick up the option? Or how about Sonny Gray straight up…probably 10m for 2019 and may be able to flip him in July; Gray’s road numbers were good in ’18 and the Yankees would love the 13.8 tax hit for Myers

Gray is owed nothing if the Yankees just wanted to get rid of him they wouldn’t trade him for overpaid Myers they’d just non-tender him.

Home/road splits matter…Myers is better away from SD…Gray is much better outside Yankee stadium…they will never non-tender him, never.

Also, for teams like Yankees, Red Sox & Dodgers the tax threshold is more of a concern than the actual salary….Myers 13.8m tax hit would be a huge factor for the Yankees. The 22m doesn’t matter to them….Myers is definitely worth the 13.8m.

          Most teams will look at the 22m; those that push the tax threshold will look at the 13.8. I’m not sure the Red Sox won’t look at Myers for the same reason;

Mariners should go for Myers if they can’t/won’t give Vogelbach the time of day to start. Myers is a frustrating player in many ways, but the corner OF and 1B flexibility plays in his favor and he adds some more offensive diversity than Ryon Healy does. Whether or not it’s a realistic scenario, Myers’ 30/30 upside intrigues the heck out of me and his OPS isn’t destroyed by a sub-.300 OBP. Feel free to school me on this thought, anybody.

Solid thought with the DH role; but the approaching reality that is Seattle not resigning Cruz for whatever reason is something I refuse to acknowledge until it either happens or doesn’t. I’d rather pay Cruz and acquire Myers, but I guess we’ll see.

Myers is still young( only 27). If the Brewers were smart they would trade for him, think he would fit in perfect, can play left when Braun is hurt or first base in case Aguilar isnt what we think he is at first or can fill in in an emergency at third. Milwaukee will probably be trading or moving on from Broxton, Santana, Thames, Moustakas and Anderson.

Well the Brewers aren’t going to be stashing guys down in AAA this year because Broxton and Santana are out of options and Thames wants out no matter what that relationship is damaged beyond repair. Granderson isnt coming back, so your outfield reserves will change dramatically

Bottom line Myer is a loser. Padres record with him is terrible and aside from rookie year with Rays dropping fly balls in OF in postseason and doing nothing. Rays couldn’t wait to get rid of him.

Myers just needs to get off the team one way or another. If it takes the Padres having to pay a good chunk of his salary to trade, they might as well go through with it.

Just ran some numbers on Myers and might have a couple good scenarios.

Seattle has some ugly contracts that they would most likely entertain moving around a bit.

Wil Myers plus his 74 million to Seattle for Kyle Seager and his 57.5 million remaining. 16.5 million difference is because Myers has two extra years of control.

If Healy jumps in the role vacated by Cruz, then Myers can take Healy’s role. Seattle could also continue to experiment with him at 3rd if they want. Or, they can trade Gordon to San Diego instead, Cano moves back over to 2B, Myers can go back to playing 1B again.

Dee Gordon plus Mike Leake would be the other offer. Gordon is due 27 million and Leake is owed 31, but STL is paying 9 of that making these two guys worth 49 million total currently.

Gordon can play 2B while Urias plays SS until Tatis is ready. Then Urias would shift over and Gordon can play some CF, spell some guys in the infield, etc. Leake becomes a quick rotation fix, local guy from Fallbrook, CA. I think Seattle and San Diego match up really well in moving some pieces around.

The easiest of them all is Kyle Seager plus Mike Leake for Wil Myers straight up. Seattle can kick in a couple million to bridge the difference. Which I believe is 6 million. The Mariners should put Myers at 1B. The Padres will slot Leake right into the rotation, Seager plays 3B, Villanueva will see time against LHP.

It’s not ideal, but if the Padres want to get out of Myers there aren’t going to be a lot of takers. Just one idea of a team with similar albatross contracts. Turning Myers into a solid rotation piece (Leake) plus whatever Gordon can give at this point seems better than just settling with Myers as an over-paid utility player at this point.

Preller coming up on 5 years of nothing but losing (the prospects omg) is not going to look like more of ass than he is eating contract to get rid of him. Best they can do is hope he turns it around by deadline.
