Cardinals Designate Ryan Meisinger For Assignment

By Steve Adams | December 21, 2018 at 10:56am CDT

The Cardinals announced Friday that they’ve designated right-hander Ryan Meisinger for assignment. His roster spot will go to left-hander Andrew Miller, whose two-year pact with the Cards has now been formally announced.

St. Louis claimed Meisinger off waivers from the Orioles just last week. The righty made his big league debut with Baltimore this past season, pitching to a disappointing 6.43 ERA with a 21-to-10 K/BB ratio in 21 innings out of the Orioles’ bullpen. Meisinger did, however, enjoy a strong year between Double-A and Triple-A, where he pitched to a 3.13 ERA with averages of 10.8 strikeouts and 2.9 walks per nine innings pitched through 46 frames. Meisinger’s 91.1 mph average fastball velocity in the Majors this season checked in well south of the league average, though he still managed a solid 11.4 percent swinging-strike rate in that time.

So they’re gonna stick with Cecil and Gregerson then…?

I hope they stick with those two (for now) . Gregorson ran into bad luck last year, otherwise he’s always been a solid bullpen guy -that we’ve already paid for might I add . It would be silly to push him aside already …. now for Cecil, I could see that going either way … but call me crazy, I’m optimistic that he will have a decent year this year … I don’t know why, but I just think he may figure something out … some people are willing to be open to fowler getting another chance, I’m open to Cecil working his way back into the mix . You never know

Okay … I am calling you crazy. Cecil has to go. Eat the contract and move on.

Personally I’m ok with seeing if Gregerson is healthy and has anything to offer, but just DFA Cecil. Miller Shreve and Webb are enough lefties.

And just for the record – I think they need to sign/trade for another top reliever arm … I like Miller a lot, but it is a small gamble with health concerns. So one more top reliable arm might be a must

Glad a top FA has agreed to come to STL – welcome Mr Miller

It’s just like Goldy said. Every player in the majors would love a chance to play in St Louis and here they come.

Except Stanton, Price, Heyward wanted out…..

Don’t take the cliche answers at face value.

Stanton wanted the New York lifestyle. Price wanted to come but Boston outbid the Cardinals by a ridiculous amount. Heyward didn’t want to be “the guy” I can’t say I blame him he wouldn’t be “the guy” on a little league team

Price was fine with St. Louis, Boston came in and offered more at last minute. Heyward chose a younger team and opt outs. Stanton said no. He’s only one on record that didn’t want to come to St. Louis. Only one. This narrative is tired and false.

Price thought he was signing with the Cardinals until his agent told him the Ref Sox outbid them. He had no problem being a Cardinal.

Mixed feelings – if he does well this year, we will keep him for the last two years of his contract and he will continue to block RF … if he does bad, we may actually move on to a younger, more productive player soon …. so I’m torn … part of me wants him to get beat out in spring training, part of me wants him to bat .280 with 3 errors on the season

I hear ya…I would rather see oneil get his shot…and have a monster year. That with bader and Goldy…would get St Louis very excited…and then see ozuna and dejong play well. Lot to ask though

I think we will have much more doubles this year than in the past – and we have baserunners to will make that work for us . But I love dingers ! Lol and I’m looking forward to Ozunas 108 mph ground balls to third – that just sounds scary

Something I’ve been thinking about..Goldschmidt has averaged 34 HR over the last 4 seasons. I haven’t looked up each stadium he has hit them in yet but it can be tough to hit in the NL and AL West.

No science behind it but I can’t see four Cardinal players flirting with 30+ longballs in the same season. Haven’t had a team like that since Pujols, Edmonds, Rolen, Sanders. Would be nice to see something that resembles that team again.
