Mets Rumors: Sanchez, Jones, McCutchen, Lagares

By Mark Polishuk | December 12, 2018 at 4:09pm CDT

Rumors about a discussed three-team trade between the Mets, Marlins, and Yankees set the baseball world abuzz on Monday, though most recent reports have cast those talks are much more speculative in nature.  If Mets fans were stunned at the idea of Noah Syndergaard potentially going to the Yankees as part of those three-team rumors, how would Yankees fans feel about Gary Sanchez going to Citi Field?  The Athletic’s Marc Carig (Twitter link) reports that one of the many permutations of the Mets/Yankees talks saw Sanchez becoming the Mets’ new catcher.  It isn’t known if the Marlins were involved in this scenario, or if it would’ve resulted in J.T. Realmuto or Syndergaard going to the Yankees, but whispers continue to swirl that the Yankees could be looking for a change at catcher, no matter how firmly GM Brian Cashman has continued to stand by Sanchez.

Even if it involves a rare trade with a crosstown rival, it seems clear that new Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen is certainly looking at every possibility to upgrade his roster.  Some more Mets-related rumblings…

  • Adam Jones and his representatives have opened a line of communication with the Mets, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports (Twitter links). (Puma initially reported the sides had met face to face, but later retracted that aspect of the discussions.) With Yoenis Cespedes a health-related question mark for 2019, the Mets are looking at Jones and other right-handed hitting outfielders.  Jones is hitting the open market for the first time in his career after spending the last 11 seasons with the Orioles.
  • Andrew McCutchen was another name on the Mets’ list, according to Fancred Sports’ Jon Heyman (Twitter link), though at a much lower price tag than the $50MM deal McCutchen received from the Phillies.
  • The Mets already have a right-handed hitting outfield option in the form of Juan Lagares, though MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo (via Twitter) hears that the Mets have been trying to find a trade partner for Lagares.  2018 was a lost year for the defensive specialist, as a torn plantar plate in his left big toe resulted in season-ending surgery after just 30 games.  Given the injury and the $9.5MM owed to Lagares in salary next season, the outfielder will be a tough sell in trade talks, unless New York eats some money or deals him for another bad-fit type of contract.

I could live with Lagares in Center only if the Mets sign Grandal or Ramos. If the Mets sign or trade for a defensive first catcher, I think they still need more offense and CF is the one obvious spot to improve.

Realmuto is a very good catcher but only 2 years of control cmon. Some of these trades are ridiculous. Suprised the Marlins werent asking for this much when they traded Yelich. Why dont the indians go in on a 3 team deal which sends Bauer to NYY,Realmuto to Indians, Andujar plus a solid prospect to Miami.

Probably has to do with the fact that there was a huge glut of corner outfielders and there is never a glut of great catchers but supply and demand theory is probably a few years off for you.

Unfamiliar with the Indians catching depth last i saw Gomes was traded so maybe they wanted a offensive upgrade at catcher. Padres have a bunch of corner outfielders and young controllable bullpen arms but getting Bauer or Kluber will be expensive.

let’s see Roberto Perez -.5 WAR yes that’s a negative sign. He can’t hit a lick. Literally cannot hit. Eric Haase? Those your guys? The Indians would look better with a decent catcher but they aren’t spending any money on that position clearly. They’d both be considered needs for a playoff team. But maybe you’ll take the Red Sox route and win despite it. Only problem is they had a great OF already in place.

Pray the Mets sign Adam Jones. He will be the new grandyman and that worked wonders in 2015. Think Jones is better than Pollock at a way cheaper option. Plus he is an established hitter and can lead our young outfield

Realmuto is exactly what the Yanks need if they are serious about contending this year. Not only would he be a huge upgrade to the defense, but his high contact, high on base bat would also be a huge improvement over Sanchez’s feast or famine bat. There’s way too many strikeouts in the Yanks current lineup. Besides, Sanchez is no longer the Yanks catcher of the future. Ziegler and Breaux are the future, and Realmuto with his remaining years of control is the perfect stopgap and mentor until they are ready.

Really have to love the fans of the New York Mets. If you take Gary Sanchez and forget last season and put him on any other team they would be screaming for their general manager to go and grab him. Offense is their problem and he fit that need.

WAR is fine as a counting statistic to determine a players value to their team. Fangraphs is pretty clear that two 4.0 WAR players are indistinguishable in value to their team for that year. You can make a general argument that a player with a WAR of 6.0 was more valuable to their team than a player with a WAR of 4.0.

Realmuto looks great because the drop off of talent after him at catcher is significant. Look at the Fangraphs leaderboards and there are only 8 catchers, him included, that were of more value to their team than any replacement AAA catcher.

Even with that, I wouldn’t give up Thor for him with Grandal still on the FA market. He’s not Realmuto, but he’s a big upgrade over what is currently there. Even at just 25 starts and 154 innings, Sydergaard provided more value to the Mets last year than a lot of other pitchers. You have to replace that value somewhere.

I think you underrate the impact of an elite catcher. They are far too common in the world series and far too rare to not accept a correlation.

The mets don’t spend enough money to win with so much value in starting pitching. They’ve sort of proven it doesn’t work.
