MLBTR Poll: Likeliest Landing Spot For Manny Machado

By Jeff Todd | December 20, 2018 at 9:29am CDT

Star infielder Manny Machado is rolling into Philly today after previous stops in Chicago and New York. That’s the extent of his 2018-19 winter tour, so far as is known, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t keen interest. The White Sox seem inclined to make a splash, the Yankees are squared up against some other powerful teams in the AL, and the Phillies face lofty expectations. Plus, there’s ongoing chatter about a mystery team, though there are conflicting reports on that score.

As things stand today, what’s the likeliest landing spot for Machado? (Response order randomized. Link for app users.)

I know you are hoping for them to be faking people out on Harper but he just doesn’t seem to fit. If yankees make a few trades I see it being more reasonable getting Harper.

At this point I’m not sure they’re gonna sign either one of them, especially with the way they’ve used the money so far.

Why is it you so badly want your favorite team to grossly overpay for a guy who has only ever had 1 legit superstar level season?

I doubt the Yanks sign either. They’ve been consistent in low bidding everybody this winter.

If you low bid on Corbin (someone you actually need, to fill a hole), why would you then turn around and overpay on a third baseman, when the third baseman you already have put up .850 OPS and came in second in ROY (deserved to win it) this year?

They did the same with Cano (a power lefty, middle infield/1B/DH option….again, a position of need): made a decent offer, but once the Mets decided to pay more, they let them have him. Rinse and repeat with Syndergaard. Also stuck to their guns with Happ, never gave him a third guaranteed year.

They’re gonna stick with the formula: bid while it’s a win, bow out once the Phils “get a little stupid”. Hope Machado wants to be a Yankee badly enough…which he doesn’t, players almost always go for the highest bid.

Doesnt matter Alonso’s 4th cousin twice removed? Money talks, and don’t see a 100 loss overpay. Please stop feeding the trolls..

My heart wants Machado to sign with the White Sox. It also desires Harper for them as well as the Cubs. But my brain tells me Machado will be a Yankee and Harper a Dodger which I have continually posted, much to your dismay since you prefer the reverse outcome.

Could he head to Cleveland as part of a Kluber deal?

Could he head to Atl to be their RF? I would rather Atl give up more and get Bellinger obviously haha, but who wouldn’t prefer that.

Could the Twins be an option if they try to contend?

What about the White Sox? If they are serious about Harper and miss out on him, then could Puig be a fall back option?

I hate to say it, but the Mets could use a right hander outfielder. What about the Phillies if they miss out on Harper?

There are still a lot of options for Puig to land if the Dodgers sign Harper and look to deal him.

Now I am wondering what it would take to get Bellinger from the Dodgers…..Pache, Soroka, and Wentz? Would that be enough? Doubtful, but I think it would be a good start. Soroka proved he could pitch at the mlb level. He would be a very nice piece to add to the back end of the Dodgers rotation.

Bellinger would look really good in either LF or RF and batting 4th behind Freeman…

          Acuna
          Donaldson
          Freeman
          Bellinger
          Camargo (at SS)
          Albies
          Flowers/McCann
          Inciarte
          Pitcher

          Dodgers Rotation
          Kershaw
          Buehler
          Ryu
          Soroka
          Hill/Stripling

I think it would be great for both teams!

Puig to the Mets makes a lot of sense. He is short-term, is a solid bat, and it moves him out of the division. The biggest issue with him going to NY is the Mets aren’t big on taking money and due to the lack of salary relief, it’ll cost better prospects.

hojostache….didn’t the Mets just take on significant salary in the Cano deal? So that goes against your argument of them NOT taking on salary. Plus Puig is in his last year of arbitration and come at a very reasonable price for his production.

Machado fills a BIG one at 3rd though. Anderson has been getting better, Eloy will be up. They’ll have some pop with Alonso, Eloy, Abreu, Machado, and Palka, and they have some solid pitching with a bonafide closer. Question marks around leadoff and CF, but I really think Engel can be that guy as a stop gap next year. He has improved offensively, and their isnt a better defensive CF.

Problem is, Phillies lost the off-season to the Mets, while the Braves are already better.

And the White Sox are terrible. Not sure why anyone thinks even Machado could save them.
Indians can trade Kluber and still win that division.

          1. Phillies were 15 games over .500 after 113 games. They’re a decent team that fell apart down the stretch. Rookie manager. Also offseason isn’t over.

          2. White Sox have been playing replacement-level players at most positions. Substituting those players out for league average or even below league average production makes them a 70+ win team without Machado or Harper as the team is currently constructed. Add in one of those guys plus prospects coming up from one of the top farms in the league, steps forward from some of the young guys already up, and the fact that they play in the weakest division in baseball and you’ve got a recipe for the postseason.

He’ll get booed, and he’ll fix it. Cano had some similar problems and he was very well-loved regardless. As long as the team is playing well, Machado will be loved, even if he does screw up from time to time. Of course, when the team is playing poorly, no one is safe. I think even Jeter got booed a few times.

It has to do with the fact that the post you commented on stated that the Yankees don’t lose their own free agents due to lack of money. They let him walk. There is a big difference between the two. My post is showing you that your post is irrelevant to the original comment.

They let the Mariners sign Cano because of money. They were outbid so that comes down to letting a homegrown star walk because of money, and no one knows if they had enough or not.

So they both can trade him after 3 years of a 9 year deal. 5th place Marlins 4th place Mets the next 3 years.

If that happens. Harper is going to the Cubs and they extend Bryant and rizzo in each of the next 2 years. For at least 9 years each.

While there is nearly zero chance Machado lands with the Mets, saying they will be a 4th place team for the next 3 years is pretty crazy. ATL is young, but they are stacked with talent in the minors and their MLB roster has some promising guys. They have hit on some of their prospects, but statistically they are due for some busts or at last regressions. WAS will spend enough to always be a threat each year, but they have already demonstrated they are pretty good at choking…whether it is down the stretch or in the playoffs. As for PHL…who do they actually have right now? They have holes all over the place. and a bunch of mostly unproven guys.

The Mets don’t have good depth on the major league roster, but they have a top 3 staff (if healthy) and pretty confidently should be in the top 10 as long as they can avoid a 6+ ERA from their 5th spot.. Their BP is vastly improved from the dumpster fire of the last bunch of years. Their hitting…better, but likely middle of the pack. They do have a bunch of solid contact guys, which is an improvement over the 3 outcome guys.

They have improved their roster from last year, more than any other team in the division. Even before that…any idea their record after the All-star break….1 game behind the Yankees for the second half. The Mets had a historically bad June last year, but once they brought up their young guys they actually started playing better. Don’t sleep on the Mets because they could take the division on the backs of their SP and BP.

I would probably say the Phillies since Machado seems like he wants to go to the highest bidder (he said he can be convinced to even play third if a team pays enough) and the Yankees and White Sox both said they won’t break the bank for him

No one should break the bank for him, he’s over-hyped and the contract will be Pujols-esqe in 3-4 years most likely. But, someone will pay him and my money is that it won’t be the Yankees. Philly offers the most money, but the White Sox will probably land him.

The comparison was the albatross contract, not of the player. Reading comprehension. Besides, at 32 Pujols was still leaps and bounds better than Machado is at his current age. My point is that he is over-hyped and it will be a horrible contract.

People give Yankees fans crap for being delusional about trading Ellsburys contract but the Cubs fans who think they can offload Heyward are on another level. That contract is one of the biggest liabilities in the sport. Unless they plan on taking back equally bad assets or trading multiple young talents with him it’s not going to happen. Enjoy having him and Darvish on the payroll for the next half decade!

Machado and Harper will both sign contracts that will handicap their respective teams, similar to Hayward’s and Pujols’. All mega contracts eventually turn out bad in the later years, but these two are going to be brutal.

Who in their right mind takes Heyward’s contract? The Cubbies would need to pay 75% of his contract and still have very few options for teams. He has been bad enough at times to not be worth a spot on the 25…so that could definitely happen again.

It sounds absolutely insane for the Marlins to think he could carry a team by himself when he couldn’t do it in Baltimore, but, historically, it’s something they might do. They’ve built up to win championships then torn down afterwards.
Maybe, Jeter sees him as an SS that could have a career like he did and convince the majority owner to pay up. If they go that route, they’d hold on to Realmuto and possibly extend him. Highly doubtful, though. As a Met fan, I’d rather not see him in our division if it’s not with us. It’s much more likely he’d be a Philly if he came to NL East.

The only way I see the White Sox is if the Yankees/Phillies land Harper and the other team isn’t willing to pay Machado. Sox are in a good spot to sit and wait for something to fall to them. It’s not like they’re currently in a division race or have an open window of being a WS contender.

I think Harper makes more sense for Chicago anyways. They desperately need an impact lefty bat and someone who can work counts/draw walks. Machado probably fits the clubhouse culture better with quite a few Latin players and manager, but Harper is likely the preferred choice if they had the option.

Hope WSox are “measured” as they say when it comes to Machado. 7yrs/250 with opt outs after years 4&5 would be a strong guarantee and incentive for him to perform well for 1 last contract later if he opts out. If someone willing to go 300+, good luck. Not sure the risk/reward is there.

This was the Free Agent class for the Padres, ChiSox or Reds to complement their re-build. Maybe even the Jays with Guerrero Jr and Co. coming up. A couple of 26 year old franchise players in Machado and Harper that would still be peaking as you’re ready to contend. I’d be more excited if one of those teams got these guys than an LA or NY. Kind of like when Werth went to the Nationals. Everyone laughed at him but I think he timed it just right.

I agree that he prob won’t match the MVP year. The thing with Harper is that he doesn’t get any pitches in the strike zone. I think he ranked 2nd in MLB with fewest pitches in the zone. So he’ll give you the 130 walks, very high OBP and will still be able to crank out 30 HRs a year. Put him in front of another star in the lineup and you’ll see some more of the counting stats for sure.

The Blue Jays front office addressed the fans by saying they would not be pursuing Harper or Machado.

For the Blue Jays to consider that, they’d also have to be in on a starting pitcher or two and be willing to spend beyond the luxury tax. With their self-imposed max payroll the last few years they would not be willing to do that.

Blue Jays won’t consider it even if it makes some sense.

Machado, he can go anywhere tbh it’s just about that money. He reminds me of Cano and Soriano.

With the Yankees he will get to do both, slack off and still win. With another team he’ll have more responsibility as “the guy”. I can’t wait to see what happens…. get me popcorn!!!

Philly won’t sign either, they will wait for Trout. WhiteSox will sign Harper because the will offer the most money. Yankees will get Machado because nobody else will have the money to spend.

White Sox should sign him but Yankees will make another colossal mistake and sign him to a 10 year 300 million deal. You think the Yankees would have learned from the AROID and STANTON signings and realize it is better to go after pitching but they think out hitting Boston is their only way to win. DUMB ASS Cashman who has 400 million net profit to work with every year and had paid a Luxury tax ever year since its enactment finally decides to get under the tax cap but with all that money he then changes course and signs Machado. He can’t resist to add big stars to his squad regardless of Its recklessness.

        1. They’d take a mulligan on that trade in a heartbeat.
        2. He truly doesn’t have the temperament for NY.
        3. That’s a ridiculous contract for a primary DH.
        4. There was no need to acquire someone so similar to Judge at the plate.
        5. Finally they would do cartwheels in the front office if he asked for a trade.

He truly doesn’t have the temperament for NY. He was perfect in NY and treated everything with class.. He never went after the fans for booing or anything.

He can also play the outfield, but the Yankees chose to play him as a DH..

I’m saying Philly because they pretty much have to come away with either Machado or Harper. The Yankees will undoubtedly put in a strong, reasonable bid, but Phillies more likely to give the absurd offer.

I discount the White Sox only because of recent trend of giving player opt outs a couple of years into these mega deals- it makes zero sense for them to pay him a huge salary for next couple of years only to have him become a free agent when they were actually ready to contend.

As for mystery team, normally I’d love to take the field against only 3 other choices, but I just don’t see a lot of fits. Cubs seem to be serious about not blowing up the payroll. Mets don’t even make a ton of sense just based on need, even before considering the remote possibility of ownership agreeing. St Louis, SD, or SF I could see sneaking in on Harper before Machado.

Two people who are saying this is exactly like Alex Rodriguez do you know anything about baseball? When Alex signed his 10 year contract with the Yankees he was already 31 years old Manny Machado is 26. Get your facts straight who are educate yourself before running your mouth. If you want to make that comparison that is fine but remember this at 36 Alex we still playing like in MVP if the Yankees give me any 10 years, age 36 the contract is over.

A-Rod was 26 years old in 2000 when he signed his 10-year, $250-million dollar contract with the Texas Rangers. He opted out when he signed the deal you are referring to.

      Consider yourself re-educated.

At the end of the day, neither will want to go to LA as long as Kershaw is pitching the Dodgers out of the playoffs year after year.

It depends where manny wants to sign but I can see the marlins coming in with a strong offer to make him the face of the franchise. They have the money and hole at ss and being dominican descent and born in florida machado would have great opportunities to do off the field deals.

How about Machado back to the Dodgers with a Turner move to 2nd? WOW! Then sign Harper to play right? If anyone has the money to do it, it’s the Dodgers. Then dump Puig, Bellinger, or Chris Taylor or Matt Kemp in some sort of package for Realmuto? Or dump it to the Mets for Thor? The Dodgers can make all of this happen if they decided to. Even for Kluber?

It drives me to absolute insanity the lives the Dodgers can make and should make yet AF decides to sit on his hands.
