West News & Rumors: Haniger, Santana, Bumgarner, Rangers, Morton, Rockies, Myers

By Connor Byrne | December 11, 2018 at 9:07pm CDT

Mariners outfielder Mitch Haniger is not untouchable, but if they’re going to trade him, it’s going to take a substantial offer. General manager Jerry Dipoto is holding out for a three- to four-player package headlined by a pair of “high-level prospects,” including a pitcher, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports. While Haniger may continue in Seattle, there’s a growing likelihood they’ll trade first baseman Carlos Santana for prospects, according to Divish. The expensive Santana, who’s only a little over a week into his Mariners career, has drawn interest from several teams since the M’s acquired him from the Phillies.

Here’s more from the game’s West divisions:

  • The likelihood of the Giants trading ace Madison Bumgarner this offseasn is dropping, per Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. It’s more probable the Giants will move Bumgarner at next summer’s trade deadline – if they’re out of contention, that is – Feinsand hears. Bumgarner, 29, is entering his last year of team control (and perhaps the final season of his storied Giants tenure), in which he’ll earn a reasonable $12MM.
  • Even though the Rangers are in a rebuild, the club has “strong interest” in 35-year-old right-hander Charlie Morton, Jeff Wilson of the Star Telegram reports. Morton spent the previous two seasons in Texas, where he did brilliant work for the Astros. He’s not the only veteran starter on Texas’ list, as tweets from TR Sullivan of MLB.com and Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News indicate the team has at least discussed J.A. Happ, Lance Lynn, Yusei Kikuchi, Shelby Miller, Martin Perez, Derek Holland, Nate Karns and Sam Howard.
  • Contrary to a prior report, the Rockies are not interested in Padres slugger Wil Myers, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post tweets. Myers presumably would’ve taken over at first base in Colorado had it acquired him, but that doesn’t appear to be in the cards. The 28-year-old is owed a guaranteed $64MM through 2023, which could make him a tough sell after back-to-back seasons of unspectacular offensive production.
  • Even after signing Chris Herrmann on Tuesday, the Athletics will continue to monitor the market for catchers, according to GM David Forst (via Jane Lee of MLB.com). However, Forst noted that “it’s nice to be in a spot right now where we have two Major League catchers who fit well,” referring to Herrmann and Josh Phegley.
  • The Rockies have hired Dave Magadan as their hitting coach and moved Ron Gideon to first base coach, GM Jeff Bridich told Nick Groke of The Athletic and other reporters Tuesday. Magadan will take over for Duane Espy, whom the Rockies parted with last month. A major league infielder from 1986-2001, Magadan has garnered significant coaching experience since his playing career ended. The 56-year-old was the Diamondbacks’ hitting coach from 2015-18, but they let him go after the season.

Yes but he would get plenty of at bats between first and the outfield( slumps and Braun being hurt) You obviously would need to trade Broxton, Santana and Thames for it to work perfectly

If Hanigar is available for that I don’t see why the Braves can’t go with something like Soroka, Bryce Wilson, Jenista & Biddle
But either way doesn’t matter what it is if he truly is available AA gotta get it to happen.

If that package works, AA should pull the trigger! That would be a big time move for Atl!

According to the article it should be close! 3-4 players with 2 being high level prospects.

Soroka and Wilson are both in the top 100. Jenista is another solid prospect plus Jesse Bibble to help them in the bullpen.

According to this article that should be very close to getting Haniger.

        Wright, Wilson, Pache and Muller?

Kind of close. From the Braves, Dipoto would ask for:
      1. Riley
      2. A top SP prospect who is MLB ready (Wright or Toussaint)
      3. A prospect who is further away (Contreras) or another pitcher (Fried).

As much as I like Haniger, if that is on the table, it would be hard to not pull the trigger.

        ATL- Haniger, Gray
        NYY- Camargo, Wright, Wilson
SEA- Andujar, Riley, Mid prospect from ATL

ATL gets haniger and Gray(who could pitch a lot better in ATL rather than NYY giving up Camargo, Wright, WIlson, Riley

NYY gets replacement of Andujar who plays better D and hit 270 w 22 HRs along with two pitchers very close to MLB (Wright is one of the best prospects)

SEA gets Riley(highly regarded) and Andujar(proven) and mid prospect

Feel free to comment about light/heavy loads for one team bc this was a lot

Then sign a big time reliever (ATL)

I don’t know how necessary andujar is if Seattle is getting Riley too. Also it seems like the yanks are paying too little, and maybe frazier or something going to Seattle would even it out.

I think Atlanta is giving up too much. If they are giving all that up, just trade with Seattle directly. You can get Gray for a lot less if you just want him.

Not what I think the Giants would be looking for…. Id open to trading him as long as the return would bring back an OF prospect and an arm or 2

Absurd. Ray is decent but need to add three more legit guys for Haniger plus prospects for Santana.

Burnes Would certainly be the centerpiece of that deal. Ray would be a 2ndary piece. The crew would have to take bad money from Seattle for that to happen. Santana’s money isn’t bad enough. It’d have to be seager’s Full contract or Bruce and Dee Gordon’s deal with Haniger for burnes Ray and Thames. That’s the only possible way you can get Haniger with a package that light and that’s probably not even happening.

Would anybody want to play for the Rangers in 2019? I will watch every game but its sure getting harder to do. I expect a 100 game loss this season.

I think the Mariners should try and convince Atlanta to trade Ronald Acuna for Mitch Haniger, Mallex Smith, Kyle Lewis, Dan Altavilla, and Gerson Bautista. Even if you believe that Haniger and Smith were both 150% better than they really should have been in 2018, which is what the metrics say, they still are 4 years each of control for 6 years of Acuna and their four years should net 26 WAR over 4 years, which is 6.5 WAR, even if you are bullish on Acuna, you can’t expect more than 27 WAR in six years. Cpuld he be that good or better, sure, but you could make the same argument about Haniger and Smith. The difference is you have two players that look very capable of repeating a combined 10 WAR season, versus a guy who came off a 4 WAR season and may need to make adjustments after the league adjusts to him. Lewis is worth about $20-25M as a top prospect. Altavilla and Bautista are $5M per pitcher. Meaning the Mariners would be overpaying for Acuna, but 20 year old phenoms require that.

Why the Braves would do this: Adding 10 WAR to a team for pre arb years while subtracting only 4 WAR from a 90 win team makes them close to 100 win team with Donaldson, should he play to his potential at 3B.

That’s a bad trade for the Mariners, and doesn’t make sense for the Braves.
