Giants Outright, Re-Sign Zach Green & Cristhian Adames

The Giants announced that they have outrighted infielders Zach Green and Cristhian Adames. Both players will remain in the organization after agreeing to new minor-league deals.

Green, a Northern California native whom the Phillies chose in the third round of the 2012 draft, is now in line for his second season with the Giants. He signed a minors pact with San Francisco last winter and then spent the majority of the season as a member of Triple-A Sacramento, with which he torched Pacific Coast League pitching for a .282/.380/.659 line and 25 home runs in just 297 trips to the plate. The 25-year-old Green’s stellar minor league output earned him his first major league call-up during the season, though he only mustered a .143/.250/.214 line in 16 plate appearances.

Adames, 28, is an ex-Rockie who joined the Giants on a minors pact in July. The normally light-hitting Adames was effective at Sacramento, where he batted .283/.364/.517 with six HRs over 165 PA. The Giants called Adames up in September, when he collected seven hits in 24 tries.

Angels Decline Option Over Kole Calhoun

The Angels announced that they have declined their club option over outfielder Kole Calhoun, as Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register first reported (Twitter link). He’ll receive a $1MM buyout rather than a $14MM salary for 2019.

This move seemed likely as the offseason drew near, even in spite of a nice 2019 effort from Calhoun. There are several other corner outfield options floating around in free agency and the Angels have a host of needs to address. With top prospect Jo Adell waiting in the wings, this kind of outlay wasn’t particularly sensible.

Calhoun, 32, bounced back from a rough 2018 season. In 632 plate appearances, he slashed .232/.325/.467 and launched a career-best 33 home runs. (Of course, he was far from the only MLB player to put up a new personal high in that department.)

There’ll surely be interest in Calhoun, a well-regarded defender who hits from the left side. It’s possible he’ll field multi-year offers. But odds are he will end up playing for less than $14MM in the 2019 season.

Phillies Announce Flurry Of Roster Moves

The Phillies have announced a wide slate of roster moves today, setting the team up for another fascinating offseason. In particular, the club has shorn a big chunk of its 2019 pitching staff from the roster in one fell swoop.

Philadelphia declined club options over righty Jared Hughes, righty Pat Neshek, and lefty Jason Vargas. Also heading to the open market are five players were outrighted: infielder Phil Gosselin and righties Jerad Eickhoff, Mike Morin, Blake Parker, and Edubray Ramos.

That’s a big chunk of innings going onto the open market despite ongoing control rights. To be exact, the Phils are kicking 219 2/3 of their frames from 2019 back into free agency. It’s hard to argue with any of the decisions.

Hughes was solid as a late-season gap-filler, but didn’t rate at a $3MM price tag for 2020. He’ll get a $250K buyout on the way out. Neshek takes $750K with him instead of pitching for $7MM. That’s no surprise after he was limited to 18 frames due to injury. Vargas is due a $2MM buyout instead of a $8MM salary; the Phils evidently feel they can do better in the rotation on the open market this winter.

The biggest departure is that of Eickhoff. The once-promising starter projected to earn only $1.5MM, with one more season of control thereafter, but the Phils decided to cut bait after watching him struggle to a 5.71 ERA over 58 1/3 innings. Eickhoff had a few encouraging outings upon his return from a long injury layoff, but struggled thereafter and was again sidelined with arm woes.

The other three were also eligible for arbitration. Morin, who has a $1.2MM projected arb salary, struggled to get strikeouts during his stint with the club. Parker surprisingly turned in 11.2 K/9 and 2.2 BB/9 in 25 frames but also gave up a host of homers and earned runs. Perhaps he’d have been worth a lower-cost keeper price but the Phils weren’t biting at a projected $4.7MM. The 26-year-old Ramos entered the year as a key piece but struggled with injuries and showed a velocity decline when he was available. He projected to earn only $800K, but the team may not have been convinced of his ability to return to full health.

Meanwhile, a host of players were added back to the 40-man roster. Among the players activated from the 60-day injured list is starter Jake Arrieta, who has exercised his player option and will remain with the organization. On the heels of a messy, injury-marred campaign, that comes as no surprise. Additionally, outfielder Odubel Herrera was reinstated from the restricted list after the conclusion of his suspension for a violation of the league’s domestic violence policy. His future with the organization remains unclear following this procedural move.

Pirates Exercise Options Over Archer, Marte; Outright Four Players

The Pirates announced a series of roster moves today. In addition to exercising club options over Chris Archer and Starling Marte — moves that were all but a given — the club has outrighted four players. James Marvel, Alex McRae, Yefry Ramirez and Wei-Chung Wang were all dropped from the Pittsburgh 40-man roster.

The Pirates don’t have a general manager at the moment — assistant GM Kevan Graves is filling that role on an interim basis — though it was still undoubtedly easy for their front office to pick up Archer and Marte at their 2020 tabs. Archer has been surprisingly below average since the Pirates acquired him from the Rays in a July 2018 trade that’s looking like one of the most regrettable deals in Pittsburgh history. Nevertheless, as someone who’s due an affordable $9MM in 2020, it’s worth keeping Archer around and hoping for a bounce-back season or trying to shop him during the winter.

Marte, who’s owed $11.5MM next year, looks like an even more obvious trade candidate than Archer. The 31-year-old Marte’s fresh off yet another strong campaign, one in which he totaled at least 3.0 fWAR for the sixth time since his first full season since he debuted in 2013. However, Marte’s down to his last two years of team control, so if the Pirates don’t expect to push for contention during that span, putting him on the block may make sense. That’s all the more true when considering the lack of appealing center field alternatives on the free-agent market.

Of the players the Pirates outrighted, Wang worked the largest slate of innings in 2019. While he only tossed four frames for the Buccos, the 27-year-old logged another 27 innings with Oakland prior to landing in Pittsburgh. On the season overall, Wang posted a solid 3.77 ERA, though he did so with a grisly 18-to-14 K/BB ratio in those 31 innings of relief. He held lefties to a lowly .220/.298/.280 batting line through 57 plate appearances but was tagged for an .823 OPS by righties. Wang, McRae and Ramirez will all have the option to elect free agency.

Orioles Outright Gabriel Ynoa

The Orioles announced that they have outrighted right-hander Gabriel Ynoa. He elected free agency after clearing waivers.

This is the second straight November in which the Orioles have outrighted Ynoa, whom they originally acquired from the Mets prior to the 2017 season. Once a promising prospect, Ynoa – now 26 – is coming off his first truly extensive season at the MLB level. While Ynoa did walk just 2.11 hitters per nine and induce grounders at a 46.7 percent clip over 110 2/3 innings for this year’s rebuilding O’s, a low strikeout rate (5.45 per nine) helped limit him to a subpar 5.61 ERA/6.20 FIP.

Astros Select Kent Emanuel, Decline Option Over Chris Devenski

The Astros announced today that they have selected the contract of lefty Kent Emanuel. That move will prevent him from reaching minor-league free agency.

The Houston organization also declined a $2.825MM club option over righty Chris Devenski. But that does not mean he’ll necessarily be lost to the open market. Devenski remains eligible for arbitration and projects to earn $2.0MM through that process.

Set to turn 29 later this month, Devenski’s not far removed from a tremendous run in Houston’s bullpen. He looked like an elite reliever at times from 2017-18, the first of which was a championship season for the Astros, but has come to earth over the past two years. Devenski’s now coming off a season in which he logged a pedestrian 4.83 ERA/4.62 FIP with 9.39 K/9, 2.74 BB/9 and a 32.7 percent groundball rate over 69 innings. He then wasn’t much of a factor in the Astros’ run to a World Series berth, as they left him off their ALDS and ALCS rosters. While Devenski did pitch in the team’s World Series loss to Washington, he allowed three earned runs in as many innings.

Emanuel, 27, is a former North Carolina Tar Heel who joined the Astros as a third-round pick back in 2013. The left-hander has grades as one of Baseball America’s top 30 Astros prospects on multiple occasions in the past, though he hasn’t gotten to the bigs yet. Emmanuel is on the heels of his best Triple-A campaign, however, as he notched a 3.90 ERA/4.09 FIP with 7.17 K/9, 2.04 BB/9 and a terrific 57 percent grounder rate over 101 2/3 innings.

Twins Outright Kohl Stewart

The Twins have outrighted righty Kohl Stewart, per a team announcement. The club also confirmed a host of other, more significant transactions that had previously been reported.

Stewart has elected free agency, officially bringing an end to a seven-year tenure with the Minnesota organization. Now 25 years of age, he landed with the club as the fourth overall pick of the 2013 draft.

Though he drew top prospect grades for some time after being drafted, Stewart ran into trouble in the upper minors. He did ultimately crack the majors but hasn’t shown much ability to get swings and misses from MLB hitters. In 62 total frames, he carries a 4.79 ERA with 4.9 K/9 and 3.8 BB/9.

Mets Select Blake Taylor, Claim Stephen Gonsalves

The Mets have announced the addition of two left-handed hurlers to their 40-man roster. Blake Taylor’s contract was selected from Triple-A while the club claimed Stephen Gonsalves off waivers from the Twins.

Taylor, 24, has been a member of the Mets organization for more than a decade. The 2013 second-round pick of the Pirates joined New York in the teams’ 2014 swap centering on Ike Davis. Taylor was a somewhat highly touted prospect during his draft class, of course, though he hasn’t climbed above the Triple-A level yet. He did dominate in Double-A ball this year, though, as the left-hander posted a 1.85 ERA/2.61 FIP with 10.38 K/9, 2.77 BB/9 and a 50.5 percent groundball rate in 39 innings.

It hasn’t been long since Gonsalves, 25, was a top 100 prospect, and now the southpaw’s days with the Twins are over after a lengthy run as a member of the organization. Gonsalves had been with Minnesota since it grabbed him in the fourth round of the 2013 draft. However, control problems have haunted Gonsalves in recent years, especially during his only taste of the majors in 2018, and he barely pitched at all this season. Elbow and forearm problems limited Gonsalves to a total of 13 innings among three different minor league levels in 2019, but the Mets will nonetheless take a chance on the once-promising hurler.

Cubs To Add Colin Rea To 40-Man, Outright Allen Webster

The Cubs have added righty Colin Rea to their 40-man roster, as first reported by MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian (via Twitter). That move will allow the organization to retain his rights, rather than losing him to minor-league free agency.

Righty Allen Webster was outrighted, the club added in its announcement. As was already a given, the team picked up its $16.5MM option over first baseman Anthony Rizzo.

Rea inked a minor-league deal with the Cubs and spent the entire 2019 season at Triple-A. In 148 innings there, he pitched to a 3.95 ERA with 7.3 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9. The Cubs will be able to control Rea for the league-minimum salary in 2020; while he has enough overall MLB service time for Super Two status, he didn’t spend any time on the active roster last year and is therefore ineligible.

Twins To Decline Option On Martin Perez

The Twins will decline their option over southpaw Martin Perez, according to Darren Wolfson of 1500 ESPN (via Twitter). He’ll receive a $500K buyout on his way out the door.

Coming into the season, there was some buzz about Perez, who had been showing improved velocity and an intriguing new cutter — both of which contributed to the Twins’ decision to give him a somewhat surprising MLB deal. While those new tweaks served him well in the early stages of the season, it seems the league quickly adjusted to the changes he’d made.

Perez had moments at times in 2019 — he shut the Astros out over eight innings on May 1 and followed that with seven scoreless frames in Toronto — but he was never consistently effective enough to warrant the $7.5MM price tag of the option year. In fact, following that brilliant pair of scoreless outings, Perez’s results mirrored the form that led to him being jettisoned by the Rangers. Over his final 24 starts of the season, he pitched to a sky-high 5.88 ERA with an ugly 96-to-51 K/BB ratio and 21 home runs allowed in 124 innings. He finished the season with a 5.12 ERA and averages of 7.4 K/9 and 3.5 BB/9 through 165 1/3 innings.

Lefties who average 94.1 mph on their heater in a starting role don’t grow on trees, and Perez regularly demonstrates above-average ground-ball tendencies as well. He’s still just 28 years old, too, so teams will continue to be intrigued not just by his raw abilities but by his youth relative to other freely available pitchers. He’ll head into the open market looking for another opportunity elsewhere and quite likely find a number of clubs with interest — though he may have to accept a lesser base or even a minor league contract.
