Giants Acquire Rafael Devers

By Nick Deeds | June 15, 2025 at 10:59pm CDT

In a shocking mid-June blockbuster, the Giants have acquired star slugger Rafael Devers from the Red Sox in exchange for right-hander Jordan Hicks, left-hander Kyle Harrison, outfield/first base prospect James Tibbs and right-handed pitching prospect Jose Bello. The teams subsequently announced the trade, and the Red Sox optioned Harrison to Triple-A Worcester. The Giants will absorb the remainder of Devers’s contract in its entirety as part of the deal.

It’s a stunning move that will have massive implications for both franchises as they both pursue their first playoff appearances since 2021 this year. The Red Sox, 37-36 after sweeping the division-leading Yankees this weekend, part with a player they signed to be the next face of their franchise just two years ago. The relationship between the two sides broke down quite publicly over the past few months, however. Devers has long made clear that he wants to play third base on a regular basis, but the Red Sox clearly had other plans this offseason as they sought to add a big right-handed bat to their lineup. After discussing a deal that would’ve sent Nolan Arenado to Boston with the Cardinals earlier in the winter, they ultimately pivoted and signed Alex Bregman to a three-year, $120MM pact that affords him the opportunity to opt out following the 2025 and ’26 seasons.

That proved to be the end of Devers’ time at third base, and though he initially resisted the move he eventually took up his new role as Boston’s regular DH. That seemed to settle the controversy at first despite reports that indicated Devers considered asking for a trade after the Bregman deal, but tensions erupted once again when Triston Casas was sidelined by knee surgery that will likely end his 2025 season. At that time, Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow asked Devers to move to first base to cover for the loss of Casas, a move that would have opened up DH at-bats for another player such as top prospect Roman Anthony. Devers refused and expressed frustration with team leadership for asking him to move to an unfamiliar position in the middle of the season, ultimately leading to a private meeting between Devers, manager Alex Cora, and club owner John Henry last month.

Since then, neither Devers nor Red Sox brass have spoken to the media about the situation beyond to affirm that Devers would remain the club’s DH going forward. That’s remained the case even in the weeks since Bregman went down with a significant quad strain that figures to sideline him until late July at the earliest. The discord between the sides over the past few months surely served as a catalyst for today’s shocking blockbuster from Boston’s perspective. Although Chris Cotillo of MassLive reports that Devers did not ultimately request a trade, Jon Heyman of the New York Post writes that the slugger is said by friends to be pleased with the change of scenery. For a club that’s under-performing expectations this year but remains on the periphery of the AL Wild Card race, moving on from a star player who was clearly unhappy could serve to improve morale going forward.

Of course, there are plenty of on-the-field justifications for making this trade as well. Boston is in dire need of pitching help, and the additions of Harrison and Hicks will go a long way to patching those holes. The two hurlers have pitched both out of the rotation and in relief this year as dictated by the needs of San Francisco, so it’s not entirely clear which roles they will take up now that they’re headed to Boston. Harrison, 24 in August, projects as a starter long-term and has a 4.91 ERA with a 4.22 FIP across four starts in the majors this year. Hicks, meanwhile, spent most of his career as a reliever in St. Louis before signing with the Giants as a starter in free agency. His time with the Giants has been fairly mixed as he’s bounced between the rotation and bullpen, and this year he has a 6.47 ERA across 48 2/3 innings of work despite fantastic peripherals including a 3.59 FIP.

Regardless of what roles those arms end up playing for the Red Sox, it could be a considerable boost to a Boston pitching staff that has struggled to find much stability outside of southpaws Garrett Crochet and Aroldis Chapman this year. Hicks could fill the role of right-handed, late-inning complement to Chapman that the Red Sox were rumored to be seeking over the winter before settling for a combination of Liam Hendriks and Justin Slaten (both of whom are presently on the injured list) to support Chapman. Harrison, meanwhile, is headed to Triple-A in the short-term but is a high-upside depth option who Boston could turn to if anyone in their current rotation mix gets injured or begins to struggle.

While neither is likely to help the Red Sox in 2025, the value of the two prospects in the deal cannot be ignored either. Tibbs, 22, was San Francisco’s first-round pick in last year’s draft and has looked excellent at the High-A level this year with a .245/.377/.480 slash line that features nearly as many walks as strikeouts. Ranked as San Francisco’s #4 prospect prior to the trade according to MLB Pipeline, Tibbs has above-average hit and power tools and was lauded for his swing decisions at Florida State, where he slashed a comical .363/.488/.777 in 66 games last year. As for Bello, the 20-year-old is unranked at MLB Pipeline after making just one stateside appearance last year but signed with the Giants out of the Dominican Republic prior to the 2023 season and has struck out an eye-popping 41.8% of his opponents across 18 innings in rookie ball this year. The pair should be a major infusion of high-upside talent for a system that has been depleted over the past few months by the Crochet trade and the graduations of Anthony, Kristian Campbell, and Marcelo Mayer to the big leagues.

For the Giants, acquiring Devers is a franchise-altering decision that doubles as a major vote of confidence in a 41-30 ballclub that has exceeded all preseason expectations to this point. A career .279/.349/.509 hitter who’s still just 28 years old, Devers is an elite hitter who’s still in his prime. This year’s move to a full-time DH may even be bringing out the best in the slugger, as he’s posting a career best 145 wRC+ so far despite a deep slump earlier in the season after spending most of Spring Training working his way back from a shoulder injury. Since May 1, Devers has posted an even better 170 wRC+. That makes him the eighth-best hitter in the entire sport since that date, and it goes without saying that sort of offensive production could be transformational for a San Francisco team that ranks 20th in the majors this year with a 95 wRC+.

Adding a bat of that caliber to a somewhat middling offense is virtually a no-brainer for San Francisco, particularly when the acquisition cost is a pair of prospects still far from the majors and two pitchers who have posted below-average results this year. Harrison and Hicks, valuable as they could be in the future, were ultimately luxury items for a Giants pitching staff that currently ranks as the third-best in baseball by ERA and should receive reinforcements in the relatively near future when Justin Verlander returns from the injured list. Arguably, the most substantial cost of the trade from San Francisco’s perspective is the financial burden they’re assuming in the deal. Cot’s Baseball Contracts notes that Devers is due to a $2MM assignment bonus from the Giants, though that’s obviously a drop in the bucket compared to the roughly $250MM the 28-year-old is owed across the eight-and-a-half years remaining on his contract, which is set to expire following the 2033 season. A portion of that money is deferred beyond the lifetime of the contract, but it’s still a massive financial burden for the Giants to take on going forward.

That financial outlay will leave plenty of pressure on Devers’s bat to remain among the best in the league going forward, particularly given that he’s unlikely to return to his old stomping grounds of third base in the long-term. Incumbent third baseman Matt Chapman is currently on the injured list due to a sprained right hand that’s expected to sideline him for at least a few weeks, but as one of the sport’s best defenders at the hot corner it’s difficult to see Devers getting any more than occasional time at his longtime position once Chapman is back in the lineup. First base is relatively open for the time being, but between Devers’s known reluctance to learn the position on the fly and the looming presence of top prospect Bryce Eldridge at Triple-A it’s hard to see him making a home for himself at that position in San Francisco, either.

Even if Devers seems ticketed to spend the next eight-plus years as a pricey DH for the Giants, it’s difficult to criticize the move from San Francisco’s perspective. After all, the organization’s difficulties wooing offensive talents are well-documented. Failed attempts to court players like Giancarlo Stanton, Bryce Harper, Carlos Correa, and Aaron Judge to the city over the past decade have created a reputation surrounding the club that they struggle to attract top offensive talents, and while recent deals for Chapman and Willy Adames have helped to put that narrative to bed somewhat it’s still understandable that president of baseball operations Buster Posey would turn to the trade market to land a middle-of-the-order force rather than pursue a top free agent and risk coming up empty. That’s especially true given that Devers’s contract looks fairly reasonable compared to some more recent deals, even for a player with limited defensive value. Setting aside Juan Soto’s $765MM megadeal with the Mets from this past winter, even Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s 14-year, $500MM contract extension with the Blue Jays earlier this season makes Devers’s deal look like a steal by comparison.

With Devers presumably settling into a DH role for the Giants, that leaves some combination of Wilmer Flores, Dominic Smith, and Jerar Encarnacion to handle first base for San Francisco going forward. Flores had been acting as the club’s everyday DH this year with Smith and Encarnacion in a platoon at first base, but Flores has plenty of experience at first himself and the Giants are unlikely to be interested in dropping his 112 wRC+ bat from their lineup. As for the Red Sox, it’s unclear how they will replace Devers in their lineup in the short-term. The eventual return of Wilyer Abreu from an oblique strain should allow them to move Anthony to DH in Devers’s place, but it’s at least theoretically possible the club could turn to Masataka Yoshida to fill the short-term gap. Yoshida has spent the entire season on the injured list as he recovers from shoulder surgery that has not impacted his ability to hit but has left him unable to throw. That made him a tough fit for a Red Sox lineup that had Devers entrenched at DH, but perhaps the star’s departure could open the door for Yoshida to return earlier than previously expected.

Robert Murray of FanSided first reported that Devers had been traded to San Francisco, as well as the inclusion of Hicks and Harrison in the deal. Julian McWilliams of CBS Sports reported that two minor leaguers would be headed to Boston alongside Hicks and Harrsion, as well as that the Giants would take on Devers’s contract. Murray later identified those as Tibbs and Bello. Hunter Noll of Beyond The Monster first reported that Harrison was being optioned to Triple-A.

          thegreat – Why?

Look back at my postings ever since ST, I wrote numerous times the relationship was damaged beyond repair and a trade was not only inevitable but would be best for all parties.

Devers didn’t want to play for a manager and front office and ownership that did him dirty, can’t blame him for that.

And to the people who said “release him” and “Sox would have to eat most of his contract in a trade” I said at the time that was total crap, and this trade proves it.

The Red Sox didn’t appreciate, value or respect Devers …. now he’s on a team that does. I wish him well.

At least this *should* finally allow Yoshida to return to DH, and he will be a huge help for the team …. although obviously not as much as Raffy was.

The Red Sox were paying Devers over 300m. They didn’t “do him dirty”, in any way. Signing Bregman, made the Red Sox a better team, and Devers should have done what was best for the team and accepted the move to dh. The injury to Casas, changed everything. The Red Sox needed Devers to try moving to first base this year. Again, that would have been in the Red Sox best interests. Devers put his ego ahead of the team, and this is the result!! As good a hitter as he is, the Red Sox did what they needed to do.

vt – That’s fair, trades rarely happen in June.

Maybe they wanted to wait until after the 6 games against NYY, which makes sense.

BTW – His last hit with the Red Sox was a homerun off Fried that was also his 500th career extra-base hit. Quite an impressive way to go out.

Fever—Spot on. I have never been a Devers fan, but the way the Sox treated him was disgusting. The only thing left now is for the organization to trash him just like they have done to others, including Terry Francona. This is a good move for both sides.

After the incident in the dugout on Tuesday I am just surprised it took this long. Good riddance.

When you look at the return Breslow got, you can tell he and Henry felt the same way. Get that clubhouse cancer out of town on the first possible plane.

No one is justifying the trade with yoshida, but it is likely he has a role again eventually. Devers needed to go, just surprised it wasn’t during the off season. He must’ve been making things uncomfortable in the clubhouse. I bet other players weren’t happy with him either.

history – You’re not informed about the situation, I’ll leave it at that.

Every single member of the media, every analyst, everybody who knows the chain of events, has strongly stated he was done dirty.

I personally included links to very detailed articles about the chain of events.

The only difference is some of them believed he should simply “get over it” and bow down to management.

It isn’t about management. It was about the best interests of the team. Devers put his ego ahead of the manager, and his teammates. It happens all the time, a player is traded for/free agent, or an injury. That changes the dynamics of the team. Adjustments are made, ( don’t have to like it, just do it), and you go forward. Devers chose to put his “hurt feelings”, above the best interests of his team. He had to go, and he did!!

Fenway – They are getting absolutely nothing from their $19M/yr investment in Yoshida as long as he’s not on the active roster.

At the very least, this allows him to rebuild his trade value prior to the deadline.

Nobody offered during the offseason because he was injured, just coming off surgery. Can you blame them?

“Done dirty.” You keep using these words. I don’t think they mean what you think they mean. He was making over $30 million dollars a year to do what management thought was best for the team. He should have said he would do whatever he was asked to do to win baseball games, cash his checks and say thank you. He is a great hitter as long as he doesn’t swing at a fastball up in the zone at 94+ MPH and a bad 3rd baseman. The Red Sox are not done and now have the payroll flexibility and a reinforced minor league system to make a run at the Yankees this year and add another SP to an extended contract for the future. I also don’t think this was a bad deal in terms of the Red Sox return in players.

Fenway – Much of that “feud” was Cora’s doing.

For instance, Cora is the manager ….. why did he insist on Breslow being the one to ask Raffy to play first base? Talk about setting a guy (Breslow) up!

And remember it was Cora who pushed for the Bregman signing and insisted he would likely play 2B, only to go back on his word. Breslow was very wary about signing Bregman.

It was classic Cora, telling Raffy “I had nothing to do with any of this, it was all Breslow” …… just like when Cora threw Bloom under the bus.

It’s what Cora does, it’s why he’s referred to as a snake.

The irony is breslow is the one guy he shouldn’t have a feud with.

I can guarantee breslow knew nothing before signing bregman about any verbal promises bloom made that weren’t in the contract ahead of time. That’s not the sort of thing you brief anyone on.

There never should have had to have been “assurances” in the first place. Once he got that contract he should have been willing to play wherever they ask him to with a smile on his face. Imagine getting mad when your boss says “we’re gonna give you an easier job but we’re still gonna pay you the same.”

A great trade for the Giants, though both Harrison and Tibbs will ultimately help Boston, a value for value deal that makes sense for both teams. I applaud Buster Posey for having the cojones to make this deal, and to Giants ownership for approving it.

Tang – What you said about Devers is 100% false.

It’s been very calm and peaceful since the series in KC, the players were asked what effect if any it had in the clubhouse and they all said they simply don’t care and they’ve got Raffy’s back.

When one person here tries to support their view of a player by using the “everybody hates him” tactic , it’s rather pathetic … especially after Middlebrooks and others were told the exact opposite by Raffy’s teammates.

Yoshida isn’t going to be helping this team. They’re better off giving everyday at bats to their hot prospects Campbell, Mayer, and Anthony. Heck, Toro is better than Yoshida.

Per Red Sox sources: the team’s feeling was that a $313.5M contract comes with responsibilities to do what is right for the team and that Devers did not live up to those responsibilities.

Imagine said job making a commitment in you and presumably saying he was the 3B of their future. You don’t pay 300M for a DH (unless you are Cohen…). I get it is a lot of money, but players on his level care more about pride/respect than money…and they care a lot about money.

Responsibilities? Doesn’t the team have a responsibility to not dick around their star player? You’re our starting 3rd basemen, oops, sorry you’re now out full time DH and you NOT be playing 3rd base even if there is an injury to Bergman. Oh btw, now that the season has started can you now try to play 1st Base? I can see why he was upset.

Fever, the contract sucks long term but I did not see this coming regardless of the drama. I can’t comment on the return but the idea here seems like it was financially motivated as much as it was to improve the club. Where they spend the money be it on the Sox or elsewhere within the conglomerate will be telling.

All-I completely understand the frustration the team had, but I don’t think anyone they currently have on the roster is going to make up for the loss of offense that comes with trading Devers. Not sure that any of the players we received will have a significant impact on the team. I hope it all works out, but they will need to have someone step it up on offense to continue to win these low scoring games.

Actually, Japanese media feels they have been doing Yoshida dirty too. As Japanese players have sort of a brotherhood, future players looking to go to the MLB would probably choose not to sign with the Red Sox.

Fever- I am not sure that this was the right move. With all the issues with Devers, he was still our top offensive threat and we keep having low scoring games. I had been saying how desperately we need good pitching, but our pitchers have turned things around lately and I am not sure that either of these new pitchers are going to have a real impact. Who is going to make up for the loss of offense now? I will be very curious to see how this all plays out. If they really want to be competitive, they need to make additional moves before the trade deadline.

fred – Without giving up much, the Giants finally got the star hitter they’ve been seeking and are now firmly among the World Series favorites.

And they did it by acquiring a player in his 20’s whose contract ends at Age 36.

I haven’t seen even one person say this was a bad deal for the Giants.

Can you find even one reputable writer or analyst who is saying it’s bad for the Giants?

Chance – The only thing about the move is the return was light and it possibly torpedoed a postseason appearance this year.

But I’m not worked up about it because their top priority was getting rid of the contract and even Breslow made comments indicating a postseason appearance was not likely this year.

Ownership said all along they wouldn’t try to win until 2026 at the earliest, this move lines up with that timeline. Play the kids, get them the experience they need, then spend a little this coming offseason. Time will tell.

I agree that Devers was gone before next season, but the return is pretty bad. I know the Giants are eating his contract, but still. The timing and return look terrible. For a franchise that has a very bad rep amongst players and league wide after a couple of decades of boosting it to its greatest height, it just looks like a rock bottom move. No one is going to convince me this was the best return available in the league for the best hitter on the team. or that waiting for more teams closer to the deadline wasn’t feasible.

I punted on this season before spring training due to SO MANY issues with the roster. I knew they weren’t a playoff team, but this is insulting for any fan that had delusions this team had a shot this year.

Conclusion. For a team that lacked nearly everything, the only bright spot was that (once in a while) they hit. Much of that hitting has been Devers. If you think we were top heavy before this trade in the lineup enjoy watching the bottom of the lineup start in the 4 hole.

Nothing short of an all-out blitz in the trade market and free agency this off season to build a solid rotation, bullpen, and lineup with power can rectify and win support back after the baffling trades and reliance on broken (“VERSATILE”) reclamation projects the Red Sox have built this new version of the Red Sox around. They are a boring and blatantly flawed team. Their wins are surprising, and their losses agonizing for the reasons why, but expected.

I watched the good teams, mediocre teams, and terrible teams in franchise history for over 50 years now. I have never been so bored and disgusted by the Red Sox rosters the last few years than even the worst of last places teams in the past. At least the Red Sox were known for mashing and would lose with lacrosse scores.

BTW – To the Sox credit, they’ve done a lot of “listening” to me recently …. signing Chapman, leaving in starting pitchers longer, advancing runners instead of swinging for the fences, etc.

Let’s hope it continues, the games are more enjoyable when they win.

I never understood his opposition to moving to DH when he already had gotten paid for many years. Had he not yet been paid, I’d get it because it’d have hurt his earnings. But, he had his money.

His opposition to the move to 1B I completely understand. You’re asking a guy to move positions mid season, to a position he’s never played; that’s not easy and could lead to an increased injury risk.

I love all of the preaching from a few on here. Poor little Devers, making $31M per year for a decade to play baseball. How dare they ask him to play another position?

Sure – the Sox probably are somewhat arrogant and muddled at the top and could have probably handled things better. But that does not take away from the reality that there are obligations to teammates and to fans to do what is best for the team without making it a big issue. And agreed, those teammates are not going to throw him under the bus publicly but there is certainly some dissension created.

I love some of the pretenders on here that go on and on about how Breslow is at fault, how Cora is at fault and how they know exactly what is going on behind the scenes when it is fairly clear that they probably don’t have a clue what is going on in their own homes.

Not a RS fan, but if I were one, I would be waving goodbye and good riddance to a spoiled and entitled Devers with a fair bit of relish.

dewey – As is often the case, perceptions can change over time.

Does the contract really suck now after looking at the contracts that have been given out since?

Vlad got half a billion, no deferrals, through Age 40, which comes to almost $36M annually.

Raffy is getting paid $29M annually after deferrals and only through his Age 36 season.

Vlad has a .842 OPS since 2022, Raffy has a .872 OPS during the same period.

Unless Raffy’s numbers start to tank, he’s actually a bargain at this point. Even moreso if he begins playing 1B.

Yes you are 100% correct, the return was light and the trade was financially motivated. It allows Yoshida to begin earning his $19M salary and rebuild his trade value.

Yes you are absolutely correct, how the money is now spent will be quite telling. It could go so many different ways ….

          1) Re-sign Bregman to the 6-year deal he’s seeking?

          2) Extend Roman, Mayer,etc?

          3) Pocket the savings

It’s impossible to know how it all shakes out. Skubal should be a target if he doesn’t extend with the Tigers.

I love how just because a guy is making a lot of money, some people think he should just happily take whatever. I don’t know, in fact, how it was asked, nor why he had reservations. I can speculate; same as you. If he didn’t want to play 1B for whatever reason, that’s his right though. Parting of the ways was probably best for all parties involved.

The money should have nothing to do with it. A podiatrist and a surgeon both make a lot of money, but a hospital shouldn’t ask a podiatrist to do surgeries.

They paid him for his bat. If he’s hitting, he’s doing what he was paid to do.

Uncle – Thankfully I can’t see to whom you’re replying, but clearly they have no concept of how valuable Raffy has been this season.

Since April 1st he’s 2nd in MLB for Walks, behind only Soto.

He’s 2nd in RBI behind Alonso.

He’s 3rd in wRC behind only Judge and Ohtani.

He’s 3rd in OBP behind only Judge and Crawford.

This move confirms Breslow’s comments about the Sox being longshots for the postseason, in fact he likely made those comments to prepare the fanbase for this trade.

It should be very interesting to see which lies will come out of management going forward. They said they don’t want Mayer or Anthony as the DH, and anyone who thinks Romy or Toro will both stay healthy and put up numbers similar to Raffy is delusional.

@appalachian – Actually AO, I don’t know what went on and imply that clearly by commenting upon those that are so sure that they do.

What fans like you don’t seem to grasp is that when a guy is in the show, your team and teammates come first, and then the fan base. Especially when they have already been paid and there is no risk of a contractual impact.

Devers had a right to be privately upset at a move off of 3rd, but to make it a public issue was childish when he was clearly a relatively woeful defensive 3B being replaced by a GG. And then to do the whole woe is me thing about being asked to train with a glove at first due to an unexpected need was a final straw from a maturity standpoint. I would have traded him as well.

These guys are not working at Home Depot or Wawa – and even there the expectation is that one takes care of the needs of the customer whenever possible before crying about working conditions. Devers is paid more in one season than most folks will make in ten lifetimes so, ya’ know, suck it up for a bit. Pick up a glove and try to play a reasonable 1B if that is what the team needs for heavens sake.

No offense AO, but the podiatrist vs. surgeon analogy to playing baseball is about as dumb as it gets.

Every season baseball players move down the food chain on defense as they age or younger and better versions appear. SS move to 3rd / 3B move to 1st / infielders to OF and so on. Somehow Devers must be really special to be immune from the realities of playing the game.

Of course he was a bad fielder. Everyone in baseball knew he was going to have to move to 1B or DH. And they paid him like a 3B anyway. So why does he need any kind of assurances that they won’t move him? It’s not affecting his earning power, they’re not asking him to play a more demanding position. You’re acting like they asked him to move to catcher.

I think it’s a two way street. Devers has been one of the worst defensive third basemen in MLB over several years. And never seemed to improve. That’s why the Bregman move, but also his numbers were down last year and he showed up to camp late do to so called shoulder issues, and when the team asked him to move to first he refused, he is not a team player. Third, when you sign a big contract like that, you’re expected to be a leader, not a trouble maker. Fourth, he is in his 9th year, next year he will have no trade rights, and with his weight issues becoming more and more obvious, it was time to pull the plug!

Also, its a contract, if he really wanted to be guaranteed 3B he could have had language to that affect put into the contract. But, he wouldve probably wouldve had to take less money. And, his agent wasnt going to allow that.

I would not be shocked if he plays first for the Giants on pure spite to be honest. If he wants to be in the field again, he is going to have to deal with the understanding he is a bad third baseman, and Chapman on his worst day is Devers on his best defensively. Learn first to play or settle into DH, forever.

I would not be surprised if they work with him on 1B and 3B. If they show they believe in him and have confidence in him, it will motivate him to do what they want.

That is the proper way to manage people.

Where are you getting your “insider” information? Devers was never given “assurances” by the current front office. The Red Sox took the opportunity to add a gold glove 3B. Are you going to move him to a new position so you can keep the worst 3B in baseball at 3B?!

New – It’s not “insider” info, it’s common knowledge.

Devers repeatedly said he was assured when he signed the extension, and throughout last offseason.

Cora confirmed it was said when the extension was signed (him and the entire front office was the same, except Bloom instead of Breslow) and Cora repeatedly stated all offseason that Raffy was his 3B for this season.

And all of it was made public and referenced in countless interviews and articles.

Do you guys remember Mookie Betts? With the Dodgers, he plays wherever Dave Roberts asks him to play because he trusts his FO and his skipper, and all he cares about is what is best for the team… winning. Everyone needs to stop crying for Devers. MLB will figure out he can’t hit a 94+ mph ball up in the zone, and the Giants will be looking to dump his DH-only contract in a year or two.

Its not Devers, they just hate everything that Breslow and former Bloom do. Its almost like politics around here. Theres never any gray areas and certainly no logic. Its ‘Breslow and Ownership Bad’ then figure out an angle to blame them for whatever happens.

Bloom is a fool but that there were ever “assurances” that had to be made makes this a Devers problem. He’s paid to play baseball. Playing the position that gives your team the best chance to win is a part of the game. You play to win the game. Bad defensive 3Bs move to 1B all the time. It would be one thing if they asked him to play a more demanding position that he was unsuited for. Or if making him change positions impacted his earning power. But he’s already signed a contract that secures his financial future for basically the rest of his career. Once he signed that contract he should have been willing to move to 1B or DH with a smile on his face.

Do you know when they expect to get Yoshida back? I assume it is going to take a while getting his swing where it needs to be against major league pitchers when he does get back.

Can we talk about the elephant in the room…. This Sox season is going exactly like the past 2 or 3…
under 500, then right before trade deadline they get hot, and as soon as the deadline is past the team crumbles. Each time, when players could have been traded for good pieces, the Sox either did nothing or next to nothing.
I am glad that the fat, mental case, 30 mil a year DH is gone at NO COST to us!!!
Now, load Story and anyone else not worth the money into the torpedo tubes and hit the effing fire-button.

Regardless, I wouldn’t be surprised for the usual leaks from the front office …. it’s what they do with EVERY beloved high profile Sox player that goes elsewhere.

Well this is basically the only good thing that happened to the Yankees all weekend, they are no doubt ecstatic that he won’t be torturing Yankee pitchers any longer.

This is the 3rd time, that comes to mind, that players who thought they were untouchable/too important, have been summarily either jettisoned or humbled….
Nomar traded. Manny placed on waiver with no takers. And now Devers.
All of John Henry’s front offices have one thing consistently in common…. FAFO.
We survived Nomar-gate and Manny-being-Manny. We will survive Devers-Pout-A-Thon.

Hopefully this move works out like the Nomar trade. I was at that July 1st game in Yankee Stadium where Nomar pouted in the dugout. Everyone knew then he was done in a Sox uniform. I was not expecting any team to take on Devers’ full contract so the question for me is where do they spend the savings? Does this mean they re-do Bregman’s deal? I doubt it as his own injuries will likely continue as he ages. If they spend on a stud pitcher, to go with Crochet, I’ll have no issues. if the money is spent on a soccer star for Liverpool, there will be big problems with true Sox fans.

It was probably being worked on for months, certainly since the owner meeting in KC.

Surprised me too. I wouldn’t have been at all shocked to see him traded this December, but now in the middle of the season?!?

They got a decent package of talent for him, though. Hicks is a bit of an enigma, but could contribute in the right role. Harrison and Tibbs have the potential to be solid starters. Bello a bit of a wildcard.

None of the players acquired are going to replace Devers. None are likely to be stars. It doesn’t make the current team better. But it is a respectable collection of talent for a very highly paid DH who no longer fit on the team.

I don’t see the 4 outfielders rotating through the DH role. KC is hurting the team right now, a demotion still seems to be in the cards. Especially if Bregman returns within the next few weeks.

Fever – As long as they keep all four outfielders (counting Abreu/Refsnyder as one), then you pretty much have to rotate them through the DH role. Rafaela should play every game in CF, but the others can share the time on the corners.

Of course a trade of one of those outfielders could still happen.

Campbell is hitting again in June. He started picking it up once Cora let him slide down the order again. He’s a good kid, and will eventually be ready to bat high in the order, but it was clearly messing with his head.

Wait – I fully believe in KC longterm and picture him as a good #2 guy in the lineup, but he’s not been hitting of late. Sure he’s drawing walks and HBP’s but he’s hitting .227 in his last 15 games and .211 in his last 7 games and even with the .358 OBP he’s still got just a .699 OPS in his last 15 games. He’s been super lucky, like the double that was just a chopper that bounced over the head of the first baseman in NY.

Also not sure if you noticed, Cora has been pulling him in many games for defensive purposes. He’s still statistically the worst defensive 2B in MLB.

And Cora dropping the plan to have KC play 1B definitely has helped KC somewhat.

Hardly. Kyle Harrison was as recently as last off-season one of the best pitching prospects in the game. James Tibbs was their first round pick and is having an excellent first season in the pros. Jose Bello is a 19 year old with a beast of an arm. This is a great haul, considering probably the best asset the Red Sox are getting is all that money they don’t have to pay Devers. Watch for them to go wild this off season.

The Red Sox have plenty of money to work with, and all the flexibility they need. Now they just need to make the right moves.

Last seven games, from June 7 through June 14, Campbell is hitting .300/.440/.500. But it isn’t the BA that I’ve been watching as much as the BB and K.

Yeah, he’s a bit of a butcher at 2B. But the other half of that is Cora likes getting Hamilton into the game. If you send Campbell down, then Hamilton slides into the starting lineup. Do you REALLY want to see that?

Check back in a couple weeks when Bregman returns. Likely the right move will be clear by then.

Betts told the Red Sox “No. Thank you.” to an extension. He said he wanted to explore free agency. They had no choice but to trade him. They trade him to the Dodgers, and for what everyone thought was a pretty good deal. It didn’t work out, which happens with a lot of “prospects”. Betts then signed and extension with the Dodgers before “exploring” free agency. Good for him. Don’t hold the Red Sox accountable for that.

seam – Then why has every article I’ve read grading the trade given the Sox a “C” at best?

          I’ve already moved on though.

Now the question is, who will be the next star pushed out of Boston?

          This season it was Devers.

          Last season it was Sale.

For the 2023 season it was Xander and Eovaldi.

For the 2020 season it was Mookie.

          Next up is Duran? Abreu?

Or will it be 4-5 years from now with Mayer or Anthony?

I give the deal a “D” in the present. The grade can be raised strictly depending on what they do with the return. They freed up 250+ million. Let’s see how they spend it, and if it addresses any of the atrocious flaws on the roster, including the massive one in the lineup they just created.

Do any of the players in the trade pan out? Are any of those players packaged in a good return that helps the roster? They rock bottomed the fan base, again. What massive competitive upgrades are they going to make this off season to finally create that “consistent winning team built for the playoffs every year” after 4+ years of saying every losing year was part of the plan to build that team they mentioned.

Fever points it out all the time, and it is true. Not a single roster had the slightest chance of making the playoffs the last few years. 2025 wasn’t the target year, 2026 was. Well, 2026 is next year. They have to deliver, or this was just another unwarranted stupid drama that set the team back.

Do you think a complete rebuild of a rosters are built in 3 years? The team was absolutely gutted leading into the rebuild, and it took a while if you think it still has “atrocious flaws” you are truly clueless and I see why youre a “Fever” guy.

The same blatant flaws for 4 straight years. Thin starting with insane early inning pitch counts, weak pens, terrible defense, high swing and miss on a team with sporadic power, and a constant reliance on journeymen and reclamation projects throughout.

You think it takes years for a large market team to identify and fill blatant issues with their roster that every single person can identify without issue?

As an example, you think the Red Sox didn’t have the means or ability to at least lock down a legit upper tier second baseman in 5+ years? Instead of rotating into the roster below average free agent defensive outfielders and middle infielders, they couldn’t sign or trade for a single outfielder or infielder on a long-term deal that fields and hits to supplement the kids?

As an example: For years they have desperately needed a good right-handed power bat they could run out there daily and play solid defense, and instead we signed a long-term big contract for a lefty hitter with marginal power that cannot field. The Red Sox didn’t evaluate that they were becoming a team that had a major weakness growing against left-handed pitching? Don’t you dare imply it take 3+ years to identify these major issues and address them with a mere 190+ million budget.

Instead of signing known hurt, recovering, or reclamation projects, perhaps sign a quality healthy arm who isn’t in need of being reworked into a serviceable pitcher. They may get hurt, that’s true, but at least you’re starting with the premise they are good and healthy and not starting with the premise the guys you’re bringing in are coming off major injuries or coming off terrible seasons.

Maybe, just maybe, sign quality over quantity and not call it versatility and depth. Versatility is just colorful way of saying that you are taking advantage of playing people out of position because their mediocrity gains value doing it that way. If they were great at a position and could hit, they would be playing there every game.

On and on I can go. Having a flaw one year can be caused by injuries, oversights, etc. I have listed the same exact flaws every preseason here for the last 4 years, and a couple for over 8 years. Again, we have not had a dominant lefty set up guy since 2013. Chapman would have been that guy, but they needed to make him a closer because the reclamation closer project fizzled, and you cannot trust anyone in that pen as a closer.

Lord knows the Yankees have to retool at trade deadline nearly every year with a couple of moves to address their flaws. BTW, that means they see the flaws and are willing to address them in the same season. In the off season they try to fix more. They don’t just ignore them like they do not exist.

          william – Great post!

The past 5 years have shown the Sox don’t prioritize winning, and even many of the longtime front office suckups are pissed about the Raffy trade.

But what does ownership care? They just keep right on with the bait-and-switch.

BTW – The longest tenured player now is Houck at 4+ years. They finally succeeded at turning over the entire roster.

In fact Houck, Duran, Wong, Crawford and Whitlock are the only players remaining who were on the last Red Sox postseason team.

I don’t think we will see another longtime player like Ortiz, Wake, Rice, Tek, Dewey, Yaz etc as long as this ownership remains.

Either Duran or Abreu is likely to be traded, but that’s just a numbers game. Don’t really have space for three LHH corner outfielders on the roster.

I could see an argument going either way, but would personally prefer to trade Abreu. Duran remains underrated.

dajuba – I think the timing was planned for two reasons:

          1) Devers rakes against the Yankees

          2) The start of a 10-day West Coast trip is the best time to minimize the backlash, away from Fenway

Sox haven’t landed a big time free agent pitcher since Price. I would like to see them go all-out for Skubal if he becomes available.

If they don’t extend him, they know the return upon his loss from the team is a draft pick. That is a reason he may not reach free agency as a Tiger.

I would move the world to lock him up to an extension, but behind the scenes he may WANT to be a free agent to test his market. As a mid-market team, the Tigers have to face hard choices all the time.

What legitimate prospects? 22 year old player still in A ball? Neither in top 100. Best of the two, Tibbs, is hitting .246 for Eugene and is a 45 FV prospect, meaning his ceiling is below MLB average, mostly because he is a future DH type player. Bello is playing ACL ball at 20 years old. Not even in Giants top 30.

No. This was a bad return other than getting a clubhouse cancer off the team and saving a ton of money.

I think you’re not looking closely at the Red Sox return. Harrison (with another pitch) could easily be a #2, maybe even a #1. Hicks back in the bullpen could be Boston’s closer. Tibbs will be an everyday player in time. This was a good trade for both teams.

Sadly it’s not real Sox fans that are filling (at bargain discounts) Fenway these past few years. It’s fans of visiting teams, tourists and casuals who want the “Fenway Experience” as Werner said. That’s why Henry has no qualms about forcing any popular player out of town.

The damage was done in ST when Raffy was blindsided after all the assurances that he would be the 3B even with Bregman signing. Then the stupid “competition” lie. Then the insulting “burn your glove, you can’t even handle playing the field for any reason …. not even for only one game”.

He was with with the organization for 11 years and not once did they broach the subject of having him learn first base, they even refused to allow him to take reps or play 1B in the WBC.

They wanted him gone, the way they treated him made that abundantly clear. He was nothing more than a placeholder until the kids were promoted.

Not one person truly believed the Sox were gonna pay $29M a year to be a fulltime DH for the next 8 years.

Henry didn’t force Devers out of town. Devers got himself traded by first refusing to move to dh, and finally refusing to try playing first base. He had an obligation to do what was necessary, in the best interests of the Boston Red Sox. Devers declined, and this was the inevitable result!!

cdc – Yes I totally agree with you! There were absolutely no signs that Devers was in any way a detriment to the team, and they have obviously been playing well the past 10 days. So yeah, the Sox are a worse team right now and the impact on the team will be very interesting during this long road trip.

I have yet to see this trade ranked better than a “C” for the Sox.

It’s very difficult to trade such a large contract midseason, so not surprised if there weren’t many suitors. Again this team just doesn’t know how to do things the right way. Imagine how much more valuable he’d appear if he was playing some first base prior to this season.

Not sure if you caught this, I wrote earlier Devers had been taking grounders at 3B for the past several days. Pretty sure he knew what was up.

I know Cora said Devers would not play 3rdbase when Bregman got hurt, did Devers also refuse to play 3rd as well as 1st ? Was Cora just protecting him in the media? If this deal has been discussed for a couple of weeks ,as I have heard this morning, I’m sure Devers and his representation knew about the possibility of him getting moved. When the owner of the team gets on a plane to meet with you after a very public spat with the defacto GM , to ask , why not 1stbase. Should have known then changes were coming. Would love to have known exactly what was said in that meeting.

          blogs.fangraphs.com/the-red-sox-are-pulling-the-wr…

Here’s one of many direct quotes:

“When asked during the Winter Meetings about rumors that Devers might be moved off third, manager Alex Cora said, “I don’t know where that comes from. I haven’t talked to Raffy about that. I have never talked to his agent about that. People talk about his defense. Actually, I thought last year, he did an outstanding job, especially to his left…. And I guarantee you we haven’t had those conversations.” Clearly, the last sentence was true, but there’s no universe in which Cora was unaware of how much Devers’ defense hurt the team last season. Maybe his willingness to say something so obviously untrue should have been a sign.

Cora doubled down on those comments just a few weeks later. “Rafael Devers is our third baseman,” he told NESN. “I always envisioned Alex as a Gold Glover second baseman.” Even when Bregman signed, the Red Sox indicated that he would play second base, as a source told ESPN’s Jeff Passan on the day the news of the deal broke. Two days after Bregman agreed to his three-year, $120 million contract, with opt outs after either of the first two seasons, Cora and chief baseball officer Craig Breslow did exactly what they’d been saying for months that they wouldn’t do. They asked Devers to move to designated hitter.”

          YOU’RE WELCOME.

And oh yeah, key part right here about Cora the Pathological Liar:

“Maybe his willingness to say something so obviously untrue should have been a sign.”

Bahaha. Cool story bro. Forget you were and RS “insider”. I love self indulgent so called fans who think they know the whole story. I know driving a bus part time makes you a super fan, but in the real world, when people make $313mil you might want to be a team player regardless of what you were told.

Owners and GMs make and break promises. Players get paid and become lazy and entitled. Bottom line. Be a professional and pivot. You weep for Devers as if he was asked to sit at the back of the bus. They asked him to change position. Your self entitlement views this as unreasonable. I think it’s unprofessional he wouldn’t change. But you get personal and act like you’re the smartest guy in the room. Get a life bro- the RS owe you nothing. You don’t need to defend a prima Donna just to look cool on a website

It’s not yet known where he will fit in defensively or if he’ll be the dh for the Giants. But what I do know is the Giants have already said they are going to communicate with Devers first before any decisions about positions he’ll play. They are including him in those talks. That is the way Posey handles things. Honesty with players and including players in discussions. Posey, Minasion & Melvin all operate that way. Devers along with other key players on the team all have input. I think honesty with all players is the right way to make the players comfortable and productive. Possible that wasn’t exactly the way Cora and Breslow handled Devers.i think this trade will in time will be a win-win for both teams.

Steve – If you devote as much time and energy as I do learning what’s going on with the Red Sox, then YOU TOO can have the same knowledge as I.

You think knowledge is the same as intelligence? It’s not …. and an intelligent person would know that ;O)

None of what I wrote is insider info, if it was then I wouldn’t have shared it for free in the middle of 994 comments.

Raffy has proven over the past 9 years he’s a great teammate, and his teammates have made it really clear they love him and support him. If you want to continue fantasizing that he’s secretly disliked by his teammates, that’s your prerogative.

I’ve supported a trade since ST and stated it would happen when so many others were convinced him and the team would live happily ever after. So no weeping here, I’m very happy he’s now in a place that will appreciate him and value him and treat him with respect.

There’s been recent reports the Sox wanted to get out from under the contract since before last season. Well they succeeded, management and you got what you wanted. Congrats!

You think the Red Sox will reward you for being a front office suckup? Good luck with that, bro.

Here’s another bit of info for you, Fenway workers have authorized the first labor strike in the park’s history. Why don’t you volunteer your time selling food there, continue your quest to save billionaires money.

Haha. A suck up to RS management? I’m not defending anyone. I’m not even a RS fan. But it’s same whining from guys like you and other casual fans who think we’re owed something.

Here’s a little secret bro- it’s a business. Owners are in to make money and yes try to win when there is opportunity. You make think they “owe” as a fan, but they don’t. The sooner you grow up and realize you’re not entitled to winning or making personnel decisions, the more you might be able to enjoy the game as a true fan. But in so far as you think you’re “entitled” and owed by the ownership and front office, you will never be a happy camper. As a Giants and Mariners fan, I take what I can get on any given year. Owners owe me nothing. I then choose to watch, buy tickets, and or merchandise when it suits me. I won’t buy Root Sports unless the Mariners field a product worth watching.

But I am not a 10-year-old thinking they owe me. My god, when are people going to accept the fact that owners and front’s office will make good and bad decisions- and even OMG, lie to or deceive consumers. Don’t watch. But don’t f-ing keep complaining about something that’s out of your control brother. This website has become a venting post of entitled fans who think their owed something. Baseball is not a fundamental right. It’s a game. Played by millionaires and run by billionaires. Winning is not a fundamental right. Enjoy the young talent the RS have and maybe next year bro but you gotta stop acting like it’s life or death.

That makes you an insider because you waste hours of your life reading “inside” info on the RS? Maybe get a job, move out of your parents’ basement, and find a girlfriend that doesn’t need inflating?? If you do that, maybe you won’t take being and RS insider so seriously bro. No one believes you have an inside scoop on the RS front office.

But hey cool story bro- have the RS received your resume to work for the front office since you spend so much researching what they should do? It would be a step up in pay from the beer stand at Fenway you currently work at. FYI- working at beer stand doesn’t make you an “insider” to the front office. If it does, it explains the RS decisions lately.

New onwer, new GM since the PCA trade, and besides, the Mets don’t have a PCA type prospect (and the Sox aren’t getting one). But Mets don’t make sense for Devers. They already have an elite left handed bat on a long term deal who wants to play the field but should be a DH and eventually will. No room for two of those guys on the same team.

The Yankees have done a pretty good job of NOT offering long term deals to player’s that always put themselves first. Harrison was around a top 30 prospect in all of baseball just a year ago. Tibbs was the Giants 1st round pick last year. Is it amazing value? No, but it’s a solid return when you consider that they also dumped Devers’s entire contract. If you made it through the Mookie Betts trade, you should be able to handle losing Devers.

And if you’re going to avoid paying any of the $250 million left on a DH’s contract, getting four players–two of them prospects with good upside–is a solid return. The Betts trade was worse than this. If @mcase7187 was able to stomach that, then this Devers deal shouldn’t faze him.

Harrison’s stats aren’t great but he is only 23. There is room to grow

They got mad at Jim rice earlier this season. Jim Rice knows a thing or two and they got mad and told him to not interfere when a player asked for his opinion. The Red Sox let go of the scouting staff last off season that found Anthony and a bunch of great players because it doesn’t make sense to scout in person as much anymore when the data collected can go into their models.

Hes one of the best hitters in all of baseball and signed to half of what he would get on the open market right now

You think he would get 500MM on the open market? Not to take you literally but he’s owed 254.5MM still.

I personally don’t think he would. I’d bet around 300MM and many would consider it immediately regrettable.

In a world where Vlad got 500 and Soto got 700 you think Devers gets 60% of the lower of the 2?

Contracts have drastically increased since he signed his.

well, Vlad got 500MM over 14 years as a 26 year old from his home team really looking to make a splash. Soto got seriously paid but I don’t personally think Devers would get that month on the open market. Who else got even 400 ever outside of Ohtani?

So what you’re saying in that the market setting contracts don’t count because you say they don’t count?

Devers is a really good player on a good contract, in no way, shape or form is it an anchor contract.

no, what I’m saying is that you cited two outlier contracts that I don’t think would apply to Devers. I could certainly be wrong but he’s at least comparable to Alonso who settled for basically a one year contract.

He’s as close to Alonso as he is to Vlad imo and Alonso has 10 points in OPS+.

I cited 2 contracts because they are recent. There is no point in pulling data from 5 years ago, the market moves.

Alonso was coming off a .788 season and is 2 years older.

Vlad is his best comparable, especially given the moving off 3b, he’s older so he doesn’t get a 14 year deal, but gets 12 X 35-40aav easy

who is citing data from five years ago? certainly not me.

It’s all speculation but I still don’t think somebody gives Devers as a future DH twelve years. Vlad is also coming off a 940 OPS being two years younger. he has a 1004 OPS as well while Devers topped out at 916 (so far) as a 22 year old. Plus, deserved or not you have to think that Devers’ reputation has at least a little shine off of it.

Either way, appreciate the respectful dialog. This is a nice move for SF for the next few years and gives BOS another (after another) reset.

You are assuming Devers can’t go back into the field. Which is wrong. It’s been only been 2.5 months of DH. He only moved to DH because the Red Sox forced him out of 3B for Bregman and to create this trade. Giants would be crazy to keep him at DH when there is value to get in the field, either 1B or some 3B.

Using that assumption he’d field, he would get at least 80% of what Vlad got.

Devers has been taking grounders at 3B prior to the past few games. Reporters even questioned Cora about it.

I find this entire little mini-series to be quite amusing. We have drama, we have pouting, we have corporate arrogance, we have more pouting and we have tons of fans and followers losing their minds.

As a dispassionate observer, the Red Sox got rid of the huge $$ commitment for a full-time DH, and have a ton of position players to filter back into the mix. If any part of the trade return hits for them it is a bonus.

I did hear a whispered rumor that Devers, as a part of the trade deal, has demanded a 4 day work week while he is in SF but I have no confirmation for that little tidbit.

Asking that question tells me you might not follow the Giants. Not criticizing you but Chapman is on IL for another couple weeks. Devers might see a few starts at 3B during that time but not at all once Chapman is back. If the Giants and Devers feel he’s ready after not playing 3B at all this year he’ll probably be there fairly soon but very temporarily. When it all shakes out I believe his time will be at DH. If he decides he’ll work at 1B he will also get starts there. I also think it’s great to have another full time everyday player in the lineup along with Jung Hoo, Adames, Chapman, Ramos, Flores, Fitzgerald, Bailey when he gets back. Having Devers in the lineup is surely going to help the offense which in turn will help the really good pitching staff. Time will tell.

What? In 2024 Harrison was ranked the 23rd overall prospect. He’s only 23. And Andrew Bailey was his pitching coach when he debuted, and he undoubtedly had input. Harrison is the main guy for the Sox in this trade.

FenwayFanatic, Again, Harrison is only 23. The ERA for young pitchers means little. Dylan Cease debuted 2 years older than Harrison and post a 5.79 ERA at age 23. Since the start of the 2024 season it’s 3.70.

Logan Gilbert debuted at age 24 and posted a 5.90 ERA. Since the start of the 2024 season it’s 3.13.

Logan Webb debuted at age 22 and in his first 2 seasons posted a 5.36 ERA. Since the start of the 2024 season it’s 3.19.

For some pitchers it takes longer for them to figure things out. There’s no guarantee that any pitcher, or player, will develop, but it’s a rookie mistake to assume a 23 year old kid is not going to develop beyond what he is now.

This is such an insane attitude that lacks any sort of reality.

Devers has been one of the best players on the team since he’s been up, if they wanted him to play 1B they should have asked him to move in the offseason, not because of an injury.

Red Sox tried to treat their best player like a utility infielder and then complain when he’s unhappy.

Find me another example of a top player in their prime switching to a new position with no notice.

Not sure comparing SS and 1B is remotely the same thing.

Turner was a newcomer in a trade and they already had an established Seager. Had the Dodgers asked Seager to move for Turner, then we’d be closer to the Devers situation.

The Betts deal is that he was originally a middle infielder, so he isn’t learning a new position. Plus SS is the premier position. 1B is one of the least desirable places to end up as an infielder.

Imagine if the Dodgers asked Betts to play 1B. Maybe that would get us to a similar situation.

Red Sox made their bed like Amber Heard and then blamed Devers . I agree he probably shouldn’t have been paid so much back then, but the contract isn’t bad considering what a comparable player of his value would cost. It’s just classic Henry buyers remorse. It just you can’t sell that to the fans, you need to create a pretext to get rid of him. That’s what is dishonest.

If they wanted Devers to play first, they shouldn’t have cleared the path and started that process in spring training. Jays had the exact same scenario with Vlad. They let him get his feet under him in spring training then traded Rowdy.

Devers handled this poorly but the team created the scenario.

They DID ask him to move to 1B in the offseason, with the idea that they would either have Casas DH or trade him for pitching. He refused and they settled at DH. They asked again because Casas got hurt and they had a need. Any player on a career-length type of contract absolutely has a duty to be willing to accommodate a sudden need due to an injury. If he didn’t want to get moved off of 3B he should have been a better defender there. Full stop. The Red Sox did him a solid by paying him like a 3B even though everyone knew he was gonna have to move to DH or 1B sooner than later.

Appalachian, Devers was injured in Spring Training. He couldn’t work out at any position because of two injured shoulders. He didn’t even take at bats in game situations until March 15th.

Yes, teams can and do expect players to move to new positions mid-season. It happens every single year. Multiple times every year.

The blame falls squarely on the pouting Devers.

That’s entirely true from SF’s perspective.

From Boston’s POV, Hicks’ is signed through 2027 ($30M+ remaining), so they’ll focus on making him the high-leverage, flame-throwing, setup/closer that he used to be – when healthy – not very long ago in St Louis.

If Hicks works out for Boston, good on them. But the Cardinals, Blue Jays, and Giants all got tired of Hicks eventually. The Red Sox will most likely get tired of him too.

No this was about Bregman coming back from injury and the production of Mayer and Toro which allows them to ship out Devers. The past month Toro has had similar production to Devers.

Cooper, how does Toro being a utility player in the past conflict with the statement that he has been as good as Devers the past month? With Yoshida likely to return after the ASG, Devers needed to go away.

SF is much better for lefty line drive hitters than righties–they built the park essentially around Barry Bonds swing afterall. Devers should put up the same numbers in SF as long as there’s guys on base to drive in. He may lose a couple 320 HR in the right corner like at Fenway, but RF/Right-Center power alleys are perfect for him

If their intent was building the park around Barry Bonds, then they failed. Bonds could hit in any park. Oracle, for HRs, is marginally worse for LHHs. The PA for RHHs is 81, and it’s 78 for LHHs.

As a starting pitcher, he is trash. As a reliever he is good, not great. Better than average.

The Giants thought they could turn him into a starter and that experiment failed. The Red Sox have already said he will pitch out of their bullpen, so it looks so far like they will not be repeating the Giants mistakes.

          149 OPS+ divided by 31 is 4.8 OPS+ per dollar

A dude hitting 110 OPS+ , 120 OPS+ making league minimum, plus whatever else 30 million dollars buys you offers more value to the team than just one dude making 31 million dollars hitting 149 OPS+

Yeah Juan Soto was great for the Padres.
King, Cease, Profar, Vasquez, and whatever else SD bought with money saved from he Soto trade made them a better overall team last year.

See the problem is you look at one individual and thing Omg they can’t replace one individual. Thats a pretty narrow incomplete take. It’s not replace one dude it’s what can you accomplish by replacing him and his salary.

          Again. It’s just not Devers

It’s Roman Anthony replacing Devers and whatever else 31 mill buys the Red Sox plus the players acquired.

          So question is

Does allowing a young hitter playing time, Harrison, hicks, prospects, and whatever 31 mill buys make the Red Sox better than paying Devers 31 mill to play DH? Obvious answer is yes cause you’re upgrading other areas of need by taking a minimal hit at DH production.

Red Sox could sign JD Martinez right now mid reason plug him at DH for vet min and he’d give them 110 120 OPS+

Idk why people think it’s gonna be hard to replace Devers impact on the team by improving other areas of need. Literally listed an example is Juan Soto and people still think it’s just Devers like Sox did a 1 for 1 salary swap.

Diabetic Rockstar when it comes to one of the highest paid guys on the team hitting a lot isn’t enough. At $250 million you need to set an example to the rest of the team. The Red Sox know this. There is a bloody sock on display in Cooperstown that demonstrates what it takes to win. And Devers former teammate Mookie Betts shows what being a team player is all about. This isn’t MLB the Show and this team will never be relevant if led by guys like Devers.

Ronk, Definitely not 2 slop throwing pitchers. Harrison is averaging 95.1 on his 4-seamer this season, which puts him in the 65th percentile. He’s also in the 68th, and 70th percentile for K% and Whiff%. Hicks average FB is 97.3 which is in the 92nd percentile. Hicks definitely has some issues, which may, or may not, be correctable, but he’s not throwing slop.,

They’re both struggling pitchers going from a pitchers paradise to an extreme hitters park. They’re also going to an organization that is notoriously bad at developing pitching. I don’t expect much improvement from either, if anything things will get worse

Fenway is actually closer to neutral than a hitters ballpark

Ronk, But you’re assuming a previously, highly ranked prospect, who made his debut at age 21, and who is still only 23, is who he appears to be now. Pitching is a learned craft. Most pitchers don’t figure thing out until they’ve had 2, to 5 years experience at the ML level.

Maybe Harrison won’t develop, and he is who he appears to be now. But to refer to him, as a guy just throwing slop, is incorrect, and the point I took exception to.

I have no idea how you came up with that because Fenway is number two in park factor behind only Coors Field
