Giants Acquire Rafael Devers

By Nick Deeds | June 15, 2025 at 10:59pm CDT

In a shocking mid-June blockbuster, the Giants have acquired star slugger Rafael Devers from the Red Sox in exchange for right-hander Jordan Hicks, left-hander Kyle Harrison, outfield/first base prospect James Tibbs and right-handed pitching prospect Jose Bello. The teams subsequently announced the trade, and the Red Sox optioned Harrison to Triple-A Worcester. The Giants will absorb the remainder of Devers’s contract in its entirety as part of the deal.

It’s a stunning move that will have massive implications for both franchises as they both pursue their first playoff appearances since 2021 this year. The Red Sox, 37-36 after sweeping the division-leading Yankees this weekend, part with a player they signed to be the next face of their franchise just two years ago. The relationship between the two sides broke down quite publicly over the past few months, however. Devers has long made clear that he wants to play third base on a regular basis, but the Red Sox clearly had other plans this offseason as they sought to add a big right-handed bat to their lineup. After discussing a deal that would’ve sent Nolan Arenado to Boston with the Cardinals earlier in the winter, they ultimately pivoted and signed Alex Bregman to a three-year, $120MM pact that affords him the opportunity to opt out following the 2025 and ’26 seasons.

That proved to be the end of Devers’ time at third base, and though he initially resisted the move he eventually took up his new role as Boston’s regular DH. That seemed to settle the controversy at first despite reports that indicated Devers considered asking for a trade after the Bregman deal, but tensions erupted once again when Triston Casas was sidelined by knee surgery that will likely end his 2025 season. At that time, Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow asked Devers to move to first base to cover for the loss of Casas, a move that would have opened up DH at-bats for another player such as top prospect Roman Anthony. Devers refused and expressed frustration with team leadership for asking him to move to an unfamiliar position in the middle of the season, ultimately leading to a private meeting between Devers, manager Alex Cora, and club owner John Henry last month.

Since then, neither Devers nor Red Sox brass have spoken to the media about the situation beyond to affirm that Devers would remain the club’s DH going forward. That’s remained the case even in the weeks since Bregman went down with a significant quad strain that figures to sideline him until late July at the earliest. The discord between the sides over the past few months surely served as a catalyst for today’s shocking blockbuster from Boston’s perspective. Although Chris Cotillo of MassLive reports that Devers did not ultimately request a trade, Jon Heyman of the New York Post writes that the slugger is said by friends to be pleased with the change of scenery. For a club that’s under-performing expectations this year but remains on the periphery of the AL Wild Card race, moving on from a star player who was clearly unhappy could serve to improve morale going forward.

Of course, there are plenty of on-the-field justifications for making this trade as well. Boston is in dire need of pitching help, and the additions of Harrison and Hicks will go a long way to patching those holes. The two hurlers have pitched both out of the rotation and in relief this year as dictated by the needs of San Francisco, so it’s not entirely clear which roles they will take up now that they’re headed to Boston. Harrison, 24 in August, projects as a starter long-term and has a 4.91 ERA with a 4.22 FIP across four starts in the majors this year. Hicks, meanwhile, spent most of his career as a reliever in St. Louis before signing with the Giants as a starter in free agency. His time with the Giants has been fairly mixed as he’s bounced between the rotation and bullpen, and this year he has a 6.47 ERA across 48 2/3 innings of work despite fantastic peripherals including a 3.59 FIP.

Regardless of what roles those arms end up playing for the Red Sox, it could be a considerable boost to a Boston pitching staff that has struggled to find much stability outside of southpaws Garrett Crochet and Aroldis Chapman this year. Hicks could fill the role of right-handed, late-inning complement to Chapman that the Red Sox were rumored to be seeking over the winter before settling for a combination of Liam Hendriks and Justin Slaten (both of whom are presently on the injured list) to support Chapman. Harrison, meanwhile, is headed to Triple-A in the short-term but is a high-upside depth option who Boston could turn to if anyone in their current rotation mix gets injured or begins to struggle.

While neither is likely to help the Red Sox in 2025, the value of the two prospects in the deal cannot be ignored either. Tibbs, 22, was San Francisco’s first-round pick in last year’s draft and has looked excellent at the High-A level this year with a .245/.377/.480 slash line that features nearly as many walks as strikeouts. Ranked as San Francisco’s #4 prospect prior to the trade according to MLB Pipeline, Tibbs has above-average hit and power tools and was lauded for his swing decisions at Florida State, where he slashed a comical .363/.488/.777 in 66 games last year. As for Bello, the 20-year-old is unranked at MLB Pipeline after making just one stateside appearance last year but signed with the Giants out of the Dominican Republic prior to the 2023 season and has struck out an eye-popping 41.8% of his opponents across 18 innings in rookie ball this year. The pair should be a major infusion of high-upside talent for a system that has been depleted over the past few months by the Crochet trade and the graduations of Anthony, Kristian Campbell, and Marcelo Mayer to the big leagues.

For the Giants, acquiring Devers is a franchise-altering decision that doubles as a major vote of confidence in a 41-30 ballclub that has exceeded all preseason expectations to this point. A career .279/.349/.509 hitter who’s still just 28 years old, Devers is an elite hitter who’s still in his prime. This year’s move to a full-time DH may even be bringing out the best in the slugger, as he’s posting a career best 145 wRC+ so far despite a deep slump earlier in the season after spending most of Spring Training working his way back from a shoulder injury. Since May 1, Devers has posted an even better 170 wRC+. That makes him the eighth-best hitter in the entire sport since that date, and it goes without saying that sort of offensive production could be transformational for a San Francisco team that ranks 20th in the majors this year with a 95 wRC+.

Adding a bat of that caliber to a somewhat middling offense is virtually a no-brainer for San Francisco, particularly when the acquisition cost is a pair of prospects still far from the majors and two pitchers who have posted below-average results this year. Harrison and Hicks, valuable as they could be in the future, were ultimately luxury items for a Giants pitching staff that currently ranks as the third-best in baseball by ERA and should receive reinforcements in the relatively near future when Justin Verlander returns from the injured list. Arguably, the most substantial cost of the trade from San Francisco’s perspective is the financial burden they’re assuming in the deal. Cot’s Baseball Contracts notes that Devers is due to a $2MM assignment bonus from the Giants, though that’s obviously a drop in the bucket compared to the roughly $250MM the 28-year-old is owed across the eight-and-a-half years remaining on his contract, which is set to expire following the 2033 season. A portion of that money is deferred beyond the lifetime of the contract, but it’s still a massive financial burden for the Giants to take on going forward.

That financial outlay will leave plenty of pressure on Devers’s bat to remain among the best in the league going forward, particularly given that he’s unlikely to return to his old stomping grounds of third base in the long-term. Incumbent third baseman Matt Chapman is currently on the injured list due to a sprained right hand that’s expected to sideline him for at least a few weeks, but as one of the sport’s best defenders at the hot corner it’s difficult to see Devers getting any more than occasional time at his longtime position once Chapman is back in the lineup. First base is relatively open for the time being, but between Devers’s known reluctance to learn the position on the fly and the looming presence of top prospect Bryce Eldridge at Triple-A it’s hard to see him making a home for himself at that position in San Francisco, either.

Even if Devers seems ticketed to spend the next eight-plus years as a pricey DH for the Giants, it’s difficult to criticize the move from San Francisco’s perspective. After all, the organization’s difficulties wooing to offensive talents are well-documented. Failed attempts to court players like Giancarlo Stanton, Bryce Harper, Carlos Correa, and Aaron Judge to the city over the past decade have created a reputation surrounding the club that they struggle to attract top offensive talents, and while recent deals for Chapman and Willy Adames have helped to put that narrative to bed somewhat it’s still understandable that president of baseball operations Buster Posey would turn to the trade market to land a middle-of-the-order force rather than pursue a top free agent and risk coming up empty. That’s especially true given that Devers’s contract looks fairly reasonable compared to some more recent deals, even for a player with limited defensive value. Setting aside Juan Soto’s $765MM megadeal with the Mets from this past winter, even Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s 14-year, $500MM contract extension with the Blue Jays earlier this season makes Devers’s deal look like a steal by comparison.

With Devers presumably settling into a DH role for the Giants, that leaves some combination of Wilmer Flores, Dominic Smith, and Jerar Encarnacion to handle first base for San Francisco going forward. Flores had been acting as the club’s everyday DH this year with Smith and Encarnacion in a platoon at first base, but Flores has plenty of experience at first himself and the Giants are unlikely to be interested in dropping his 112 wRC+ bat from their lineup. As for the Red Sox, it’s unclear how they will replace Devers in their lineup in the short-term. The eventual return of Wilyer Abreu from an oblique strain should allow them to move Anthony to DH in Devers’s place, but it’s at least theoretically possible the club could turn to Masataka Yoshida to fill the short-term gap. Yoshida has spent the entire season on the injured list as he recovers from shoulder surgery that has not impacted his ability to hit but has left him unable to throw. That made him a tough fit for a Red Sox lineup that had Devers entrenched at DH, but perhaps the star’s departure could open the door for Yoshida to return earlier than previously expected.

Robert Murray of FanSided first reported that Devers had been traded to San Francisco, as well as the inclusion of Hicks and Harrison in the deal. Julian McWilliams of CBS Sports reported that two minor leagues would be headed to Boston alongside Hicks and Harrsion, as well as that the Giants would take on Devers’s contract. Murray later identified those Tibbs and Bello. Hunter Noll of Beyond The Monster first reported that Harrison was being optioned to Triple-A.

          thegreat – Why?

Look back at my postings ever since ST, I wrote numerous times the relationship was damaged beyond repair and a trade was not only inevitable but would be best for all parties.

Devers didn’t want to play for a manager and front office and ownership that did him dirty, can’t blame him for that.

And to the people who said “release him” and “Sox would have to eat most of his contract in a trade” I said at the time that was total crap, and this trade proves it.

The Red Sox didn’t appreciate, value or respect Devers …. now he’s on a team that does. I wish him well.

At least this *should* finally allow Yoshida to return to DH, and he will be a huge help for the team …. although obviously not as much as Raffy was.

The Red Sox were paying Devers over 300m. They didn’t “do him dirty”, in any way. Signing Bregman, made the Red Sox a better team, and Devers should have done what was best for the team and accepted the move to dh. The injury to Casas, changed everything. The Red Sox needed Devers to try moving to first base this year. Again, that would have been in the Red Sox best interests. Devers put his ego ahead of the team, and this is the result!! As good a hitter as he is, the Red Sox did what they needed to do.

vt – That’s fair, trades rarely happen in June.

Maybe they wanted to wait until after the 6 games against NYY, which makes sense.

BTW – His last hit with the Red Sox was a homerun off Fried that was also his 500th career extra-base hit. Quite an impressive way to go out.

Fever—Spot on. I have never been a Devers fan, but the way the Sox treated him was disgusting. The only thing left now is for the organization to trash him just like they have done to others, including Terry Francona. This is a good move for both sides.

After the incident in the dugout on Tuesday I am just surprised it took this long. Good riddance.

When you look at the return Breslow got, you can tell he and Henry felt the same way. Get that clubhouse cancer out of town on the first possible plane.

No one is justifying the trade with yoshida, but it is likely he has a role again eventually. Devers needed to go, just surprised it wasn’t during the off season. He must’ve been making things uncomfortable in the clubhouse. I bet other players weren’t happy with him either.

Every single member of the media, every analyst, everybody who knows the chain of events, has strongly stated he was done dirty.

I personally included links to very detailed articles about the chain of events.

The only difference is some of them believed he should simply “get over it” and bow down to management.

It isn’t about management. It was about the best interests of the team. Devers put his ego ahead of the manager, and his teammates. It happens all the time, a player is traded for/free agent, or an injury. That changes the dynamics of the team. Adjustments are made, ( don’t have to like it, just do it), and you go forward. Devers chose to put his “hurt feelings”, above the best interests of his team. He had to go, and he did!!

Fenway – They are getting absolutely nothing from their $19M/yr investment in Yoshida as long as he’s not on the active roster.

At the very least, this allows him to rebuild his trade value prior to the deadline.

Nobody offered during the offseason because he was injured, just coming off surgery. Can you blame them?

“Done dirty.” You keep using these words. I don’t think they mean what you think they mean. He was making over $30 million dollars a year to do what management thought was best for the team. He should have said he would do whatever he was asked to do to win baseball games, cash his checks and say thank you. He is a great hitter as long as he doesn’t swing at a fastball up in the zone at 94+ MPH and a bad 3rd baseman. The Red Sox are not done and now have the payroll flexibility and a reinforced minor league system to make a run at the Yankees this year and add another SP to an extended contract for the future. I also don’t think this was a bad deal in terms of the Red Sox return in players.

Fenway – Much of that “feud” was Cora’s doing.

For instance, Cora is the manager ….. why did he insist on Breslow being the one to ask Raffy to play first base? Talk about setting a guy (Breslow) up!

And remember it was Cora who pushed for the Bregman signing and insisted he would likely play 2B, only to go back on his word. Breslow was very wary about signing Bregman.

It was classic Cora, telling Raffy “I had nothing to do with any of this, it was all Breslow” …… just like when Cora threw Bloom under the bus.

It’s what Cora does, it’s why he’s referred to as a snake.

The irony is breslow is the one guy he shouldn’t have a feud with.

I can guarantee breslow knew nothing before signing bregman about any verbal promises bloom made that weren’t in the contract ahead of time. That’s not the sort of thing you brief anyone on.

There never should have had to have been “assurances” in the first place. Once he got that contract he should have been willing to play wherever they ask him to with a smile on his face. Imagine getting mad when your boss says “we’re gonna give you an easier job but we’re still gonna pay you the same.”

A great trade for the Giants, though both Harrison and Tibbs will ultimately help Boston, a value for value deal that makes sense for both teams. I applaud Buster Posey for having the cojones to make this deal, and to Giants ownership for approving it.

Tang – What you said about Devers is 100% false.

It’s been very calm and peaceful since the series in KC, the players were asked what effect if any it had in the clubhouse and they all said they simply don’t care and they’ve got Raffy’s back.

When one person here tries to support their view of a player by using the “everybody hates him” tactic , it’s rather pathetic … especially after Middlebrooks and others were told the exact opposite by Raffy’s teammates.

Yoshida isn’t going to be helping this team. They’re better off giving everyday at bats to their hot prospects Campbell, Mayer, and Anthony. Heck, Toro is better than Yoshida.

Per Red Sox sources: the team’s feeling was that a $313.5M contract comes with responsibilities to do what is right for the team and that Devers did not live up to those responsibilities.

Can we talk about the elephant in the room…. This Sox season is going exactly like the past 2 or 3…
under 500, then right before trade deadline they get hot, and as soon as the deadline is past the team crumbles. Each time, when players could have been traded for good pieces, the Sox either did nothing or next to nothing.
I am glad that the fat, mental case, 30 mil a year DH is gone at NO COST to us!!!
Now, load Story and anyone else not worth the money into the torpedo tubes and hit the effing fire-button.

man – He probably did long ago, and they probably agreed to accommodate him on the condition he keep it quiet. After they did him dirty he was very open to a trade.

Regardless, I wouldn’t be surprised for the usual leaks from the front office …. it’s what they do with EVERY beloved high profile Sox player that goes elsewhere.

Well this is basically the only good thing that happened to the Yankees all weekend, they are no doubt ecstatic that he won’t be torturing Yankee pitchers any longer.

And how great is it that Raffy will be playing against the Sox this coming weekend!!!

I’m surprised, this is how they celebrate a sweep of the Yankees? I imagine either Bregman must be coming back soon or Yoshida has made progress and they needed to get rid of someone and found a team willing to take an all of the money for a really good, but really immature player

Rsox – Bregman has been making great progress and will likely return long before the originally estimated 2-month mark.

Yoshida has been able to swing a bat since ST, progress will have nothing to do with him reclaiming his DH role.

Fever, there must be something more to things though. 40 man slots are an issue, not just for yoshida becoming dh but because you’re shipping 1 dh out and bringing 2 pitchers back.

There’s more brewing, has to be.

This is the 3rd time, that comes to mind, that players who thought they were untouchable/too important, have been summarily either jettisoned or humbled….
Nomar traded. Manny placed on waiver with no takers. And now Devers.
All of John Henry’s front offices have one thing consistently in common…. FAFO.
We survived Nomar-gate and Manny-being-Manny. We will survive Devers-Pout-A-Thon.

GaSox – I truly don’t want to rehash all I wrote about the Devers situation since February, but you should remember the many times I posted a trade was eventually coming and would be the best for all parties. It was probably being worked on for months, certainly since the owner meeting in KC.

Let’s hope the freed up money goes to something useful, rather than being pocketed by FSG.

Surprised me too. I wouldn’t have been at all shocked to see him traded this December, but now in the middle of the season?!?

They got a decent package of talent for him, though. Hicks is a bit of an enigma, but could contribute in the right role. Harrison and Tibbs have the potential to be solid starters. Bello a bit of a wildcard.

None of the players acquired are going to replace Devers. None are likely to be stars. It doesn’t make the current team better. But it is a respectable collection of talent for a very highly paid DH who no longer fit on the team.

For sure, Fever, this only improves the team if they can spend the salary savings effectively.

I agree with you that it was necessary, though. You can’t indulge a player who is incapable of fielding his position effectively and unwilling to switch to another.

Wait – How does this impact the outfield logjam when Abreu returns this week?

I don’t see the 4 outfielders rotating through the DH role. KC is hurting the team right now, a demotion still seems to be in the cards. Especially if Bregman returns within the next few weeks.

Fever – As long as they keep all four outfielders (counting Abreu/Refsnyder as one), then you pretty much have to rotate them through the DH role. Rafaela should play every game in CF, but the others can share the time on the corners.

Of course a trade of one of those outfielders could still happen.

Campbell is hitting again in June. He started picking it up once Cora let him slide down the order again. He’s a good kid, and will eventually be ready to bat high in the order, but it was clearly messing with his head.

Wait – I fully believe in KC longterm and picture him as a good #2 guy in the lineup, but he’s not been hitting of late. Sure he’s drawing walks and HBP’s but he’s hitting .227 in his last 15 games and .211 in his last 7 games and even with the .358 OBP he’s still got just a .699 OPS in his last 15 games. He’s been super lucky, like the double that was just a chopper that bounced over the head of the first baseman in NY.

Also not sure if you noticed, Cora has been pulling him in many games for defensive purposes. He’s still statistically the worst defensive 2B in MLB.

And Cora dropping the plan to have KC play 1B definitely has helped KC somewhat.

I like the trade for the Red Sox. They really needed to clear some space for the young talent, get rid of a malcontent, shed salary and add pitching.

They did get rid of a great hitter but this team is loaded with position player talent at both the ML level and in the minors.

Hardly. Kyle Harrison was as recently as last off-season one of the best pitching prospects in the game. James Tibbs was their first round pick and is having an excellent first season in the pros. Jose Bello is a 19 year old with a beast of an arm. This is a great haul, considering probably the best asset the Red Sox are getting is all that money they don’t have to pay Devers. Watch for them to go wild this off season.

The Red Sox have plenty of money to work with, and all the flexibility they need. Now they just need to make the right moves.

Last seven games, from June 7 through June 14, Campbell is hitting .300/.440/.500. But it isn’t the BA that I’ve been watching as much as the BB and K.

Yeah, he’s a bit of a butcher at 2B. But the other half of that is Cora likes getting Hamilton into the game. If you send Campbell down, then Hamilton slides into the starting lineup. Do you REALLY want to see that?

Check back in a couple weeks when Bregman returns. Likely the right move will be clear by then.

Betts told the Red Sox “No. Thank you.” to an extension. He said he wanted to explore free agency. They had no choice but to trade him. They trade him to the Dodgers, and for what everyone thought was a pretty good deal. It didn’t work out, which happens with a lot of “prospects”. Betts then signed and extension with the Dodgers before “exploring” free agency. Good for him. Don’t hold the Red Sox accountable for that.

What legitimate prospects? 22 year old player still in A ball? Neither in top 100. Best of the two, Tibbs, is hitting .246 for Eugene and is a 45 FV prospect, meaning his ceiling is below MLB average, mostly because he is a future DH type player. Bello is playing ACL ball at 20 years old. Not even in Giants top 30.

No. This was a bad return other than getting a clubhouse cancer off the team and saving a ton of money.

I think you’re not looking closely at the Red Sox return. Harrison (with another pitch) could easily be a #2, maybe even a #1. Hicks back in the bullpen could be Boston’s closer. Tibbs will be an everyday player in time. This was a good trade for both teams.

Henry uses the media to knock the reputation of the players so the team can justify trading fan favorites. Right or wrong, it sucks how they manipulate enough fans they don’t lose the fan base and fans argue with fans and don’t get riotous at Henry.

Sadly it’s not real Sox fans that are filling (at bargain discounts) Fenway these past few years. It’s fans of visiting teams, tourists and casuals who want the “Fenway Experience” as Werner said. That’s why Henry has no qualms about forcing any popular player out of town.

Well we will soon see how much of an impact Raffy’s absence will have on the team. I like Yoshida, but he’s no Raffy.

New onwer, new GM since the PCA trade, and besides, the Mets don’t have a PCA type prospect (and the Sox aren’t getting one). But Mets don’t make sense for Devers. They already have an elite left handed bat on a long term deal who wants to play the field but should be a DH and eventually will. No room for two of those guys on the same team.

The Yankees have done a pretty good job of NOT offering long term deals to player’s that always put themselves first. Devers might be a great hitter but so was Bonds and how many World Series championships does Bonds have? It takes a team of impact players playing for a common cause to win in October

The prospects are middlin. Not to down play their abilities, but the TRADE was for debt owed this year with the Giants picking up the next end of his contract. So they swapped out a 27m debt for a 11.8m debt and I assume some gravy to boot. The 27m debt comes with a 4 year tag. The 11.8 is 2 prospects at prospect pay, 1 roster rookie one year removed, under control, at 310k, and Hicks at 11.1m, with 26-28 on his contract @ 11.2 per

Devers was due, over the length, 256m. The Red Sox made a smart fiscal focused move, gave Bregman OPEN confidence, instead of clubhouse assurances, and…dare I say it, open the door to Schwarber if he jumpos at a 22-22m per/over 4 offer as that is where he is angling and the phils ain’t going to pay that and the Sox will. if you are going to spend money on a guy who is a DH for the most part, you may as well chase the best DH in the current market 😉

A few prospects outlets see Bello as a future back end starter and Tibbs as a future platoon OF, Tibbs is ranked with a 45FV and Bello 35FV. I’m not sure that qualifies as middling, but both have a greater then 50% washout likelyhood w/o ever seeing the majors. I can’t find either player on any updated top 100 lists and neither has all that great of scouting cards.

The Giants have several young arms and it was pretty obvious they would probably trade one of them. Nice to have pitching depth but too many is too many.
So, Mike Krukow, one of our announcers and former pitcher was asked by Posey which of the young ones he thought would prove best, he told him Harrison.

Harrison was around a top 30 prospect in all of baseball just a year ago. Tibbs was the Giants 1st round pick last year. Is it amazing value? No, but it’s a solid return when you consider that they also dumped Devers’s entire contract. If you made it through the Mookie Betts trade, you should be able to handle losing Devers.

@Chicken: I didn’t say that they needed to dump it, just that they did. And if you’re going to avoid paying any of the $250 million left on a DH’s contract, getting four players–two of them prospects with good upside–is a solid return. The Betts trade was worse than this. If @mcase7187 was able to stomach that, then this Devers deal shouldn’t faze him.

Hicks has an FIP under 4.00 this season, despite his high ERA. His career numbers aren’t special but he isn’t bad overall.

Harrison’s stats aren’t great but he is only 23. There is room to grow

Devers lacks major fundamentals. Guy can rake but can’t field and makes a ton of baserunning miscues as well.

The Red Sox made the relationship untenable and put the blame on Devers. I’d trade the entire Red Sox managment and ownership for a couple lotto tickets before I made that deal. A chess machine could do a better job making decisions than those dumb Red Sox computer nerds could. Why would you trade Devers? His contract is great compared to Guerreros or Sotos. His bat is just so much more important than the money they paid him.

There are plenty of reasons to trade Devers. He can hit but he already looks out of shape for one.

How were they supposed to handle the situation? After signing Bregman, Devers had no chance of playing 3rd base. Devers was/is very unrealistic in his personal assessment. That will never change, because of his limited intelligence.

They should have handled it by getting ahead of any obvious issues that would arise, like this one. Communicating with Devers before signing Bregman is a prerequisite.

I’m not calling Devers a saint but “limited intelligence” is way overboard. They obviously saw enough in him to dedicate a lot of money and he’s a great hitter.

Are computer nerds good at knowing baseball or they good at computers?

They got mad at Jim rice earlier this season. Jim Rice knows a thing or two and they got mad and told him to not interfere when a player asked for his opinion. The Red Sox let go of the scouting staff last off season that found Anthony and a bunch of great players because it doesn’t make sense to scout in person as much anymore when the data collected can go into their models.

no, what I’m saying is that you cited two outlier contracts that I don’t think would apply to Devers. I could certainly be wrong but he’s at least comparable to Alonso who settled for basically a one year contract.

He’s as close to Alonso as he is to Vlad imo and Alonso has 10 points in OPS+.

I cited 2 contracts because they are recent. There is no point in pulling data from 5 years ago, the market moves.

Alonso was coming off a .788 season and is 2 years older.

Vlad is his best comparable, especially given the moving off 3b, he’s older so he doesn’t get a 14 year deal, but gets 12 X 35-40aav easy

who is citing data from five years ago? certainly not me.

It’s all speculation but I still don’t think somebody gives Devers as a future DH twelve years. Vlad is also coming off a 940 OPS being two years younger. he has a 1004 OPS as well while Devers topped out at 916 (so far) as a 22 year old. Plus, deserved or not you have to think that Devers’ reputation has at least a little shine off of it.

Either way, appreciate the respectful dialog. This is a nice move for SF for the next few years and gives BOS another (after another) reset.

You are assuming Devers can’t go back into the field. Which is wrong. It’s been only been 2.5 months of DH. He only moved to DH because the Red Sox forced him out of 3B for Bregman and to create this trade. Giants would be crazy to keep him at DH when there is value to get in the field, either 1B or some 3B.

Using that assumption he’d field, he would get at least 80% of what Vlad got.

As a dispassionate observer, the Red Sox got rid of the huge $$ commitment for a full-time DH, and have a ton of position players to filter back into the mix. If any part of the trade return hits for them it is a bonus.

I did hear a whispered rumor that Devers, as a part of the trade deal, has demanded a 4 day work week while he is in SF but I have no confirmation for that little tidbit.

Devers has been one of the best players on the team since he’s been up, if they wanted him to play 1B they should have asked him to move in the offseason, not because of an injury.

Red Sox tried to treat their best player like a utility infielder and then complain when he’s unhappy.

Find me another example of a top player in their prime switching to a new position with no notice.

That’s entirely true from SF’s perspective.

From Boston’s POV, Hicks’ is signed through 2027 ($30M+ remaining), so they’ll focus on making him the high-leverage, flame-throwing, setup/closer that he used to be – when healthy – not very long ago in St Louis.

But he was never a high leverage anything in St. Louis. The Cardinals gave him opportunities, but he never did much with them. They gave him opportunities to start also, same result.

If Hicks works out for Boston, good on them. But the Cardinals, Blue Jays, and Giants all got tired of Hicks eventually. The Red Sox will most likely get tired of him too.

SF is much better for lefty line drive hitters than righties–they built the park essentially around Barry Bonds swing afterall. Devers should put up the same numbers in SF as long as there’s guys on base to drive in. He may lose a couple 320 HR in the right corner like at Fenway, but RF/Right-Center power alleys are perfect for him

If their intent was building the park around Barry Bonds, then they failed. Bonds could hit in any park. Oracle, for HRs, is marginally worse for LHHs. The PA for RHHs is 81, and it’s 78 for LHHs.

You’re getting pitching. Which is exactly what the Red Sox need

They have a plethora of young hitters without attitude Campbell Anthony Mayer opens up playing time for them. Clears Devers attitude and contract. Brings back much needed pitching

Red Sox making out like bandits on this one.

          149 OPS+ divided by 31 is 4.8 OPS+ per dollar

A dude hitting 110 OPS+ , 120 OPS+ making league minimum, plus whatever else 30 million dollars buys you offers more value to the team than just one dude making 31 million dollars hitting 149 OPS+

Yeah Juan Soto was great for the Padres.
King, Cease, Profar, Vasquez, and whatever else SD bought with money saved from he Soto trade made them a better overall team last year.

See the problem is you look at one individual and thing Omg they can’t replace one individual. Thats a pretty narrow incomplete take. It’s not replace one dude it’s what can you accomplish by replacing him and his salary.

          Again. It’s just not Devers

It’s Roman Anthony replacing Devers and whatever else 31 mill buys the Red Sox plus the players acquired.

          So question is

Does allowing a young hitter playing time, Harrison, hicks, prospects, and whatever 31 mill buys make the Red Sox better than paying Devers 31 mill to play DH? Obvious answer is yes cause you’re upgrading other areas of need by taking a minimal hit at DH production.

Red Sox could sign JD Martinez right now mid reason plug him at DH for vet min and he’d give them 110 120 OPS+

Idk why people think it’s gonna be hard to replace Devers impact on the team by improving other areas of need. Literally listed an example is Juan Soto and people still think it’s just Devers like Sox did a 1 for 1 salary swap.

You are the freaking Red Sox. You will have a Top 5 payroll every single season. If you are trading one of the Top 3 hitters in the AL simply because he makes a lot of money you are seriously doing things (butt) backwards.

Diabetic Rockstar when it comes to one of the highest paid guys on the team hitting a lot isn’t enough. At $250 million you need to set an example to the rest of the team. The Red Sox know this. There is a bloody sock on display in Cooperstown that demonstrates what it takes to win. And Devers former teammate Mookie Betts shows what being a team player is all about. This isn’t MLB the Show and this team will never be relevant if led by guys like Devers.

Ronk, Definitely not 2 slop throwing pitchers. Harrison is averaging 95.1 on his 4-seamer this season, which puts him in the 65th percentile. He’s also in the 68th, and 70th percentile for K% and Whiff%. Hicks average FB is 97.3 which is in the 92nd percentile. Hicks definitely has some issues, which may, or may not, be correctable, but he’s not throwing slop.,

Ronk, But you’re assuming a previously, highly ranked prospect, who made his debut at age 21, and who is still only 23, is who he appears to be now. Pitching is a learned craft. Most pitchers don’t figure thing out until they’ve had 2, to 5 years experience at the ML level.

Maybe Harrison won’t develop, and he is who he appears to be now. But to refer to him, as a guy just throwing slop, is incorrect, and the point I took exception to.

Most overpaid DH in the history of the game, a “me” player with no “team” in him, and a culture cancer. Great move dumping that albatross contract and freeing up money on guys that want to win as a unit. Never should have signed a below average defender for that kind of money in the first place and Breslow looks like a genius to the ownership group getting SF to take on the entire deal! Whether or not any of the payers traded back work out is completely irrelevant for anyone that understands the business side of baseball!
        Kudos Breslow.

Get Yoshida some AB’s and trade him off before the deadline and get all these young studs signed to extensions.

I am surprised the Giants didnt take a pitcher or 2 back in the deal. They barely have 5 starters right now. Dodgers make sense because they don’t necessarily need a postseason starter just help for now. Cubs need something better than those guys.

This is crazy. More moves to come for the Red Sox for sure.

Not surprising at all. The Giants traded only 1 starter, Harrison. and he was a starter only because Verlander went to the IL, and should be back soon. Right now they have Webb, Ray, Roupp, Birdsong, and Verlander when he’s ready. They also have Whisenhunt who’s pitching very well at Sac. Pitching is the strength of the Giants’ farm. They need bats.

Regardless of who won or lost in this, once a player literally refuses to play a position that you are telling him to play then it is insubordination. The player is an employee of the team and ownership. They had no choice but to trade him imo

As a Cardinal fan, Hicks was somehow more frustrating to watch than Carlos Martinez, Jason Motte, and Esteban Yan combined. Guy has no idea how to pitch, but he sure has a fast and heavy sinker. But even as a relief option, low leverage is best, because he often has no idea where that thing is going and can’t damage control if he’s not completely “on” that day.

This is honestly insane. I get why Boston traded him I just didn’t think it would actually happen! He’s a great bat though, the youngsters better be all they are hyped up as, because this is showing tons of confidence in them. Gives them flexibility and a semi-useful and not very useful arm.

Giants aren’t messing around. They can’t seem to land the big free agent but this is one way to get an impact player. Devers contract may look ugly in a few years, but right now he’s on a tear and has been an elite hitter for a long time. I wonder if the Giants will need to make other moves after adding this much money??

    Where’s FPG?!?

This isn’t a move that you would normally see a team making in the middle of a playoff push. Devers is one of the best bats in the majors.

That said, he wasn’t any good at 3B even before the weight gain this winter, and his refusal to play 1B is limiting – can any team afford to lock up their DH position at that price for that many years?!? I had always assumed he would move to 1B.

With Anthony and Yoshida in the wings, they have options at DH. Haven’t yet looked at what they got in return, but given the $$$ involved I wouldn’t expect much. Still doubt it makes the Red Sox more competitive in 2025, but it gives them a ton more flexibility for 2026.

I like this deal for Boston. Devers’ contract was a hindrance for a DH only with attitude/hustle issues. I know his teammates love him, but I think he was throwing off the vibes with the 1B/3B drama. This clears a path to keep Marcelo’s bat in the lineup when Bregman comes back, frees up money for deadline/offseason pitching acquisition, and provides flexibility to get guys ABs. The two arms are just icing on the cake, if they prove to be serviceable at all.

Hicks was surplus to requirements. Some might say down the bullpen pecking order even. Wants to start and Buster is big on the human side of the game. Verlander close to back. Couple of ex starters currently in the bullpen that could be stretched out. There’s a “Harrison” replacement in AAA in Whisenhunt. But yes, bold.

Not really. It checks a lot of boxes for Boston and he’s a me-first guy that was causing a log jam of bats by refusing to play 1B. I wish him well. But they just freed up a ton of cash to go get an arm at the deadline or offseason.

Boston is getting the Giants most recent first round pick Tibbs as well. And Bello doesn’t look like a throw in.

I like the value of the deal for the Red Sox. But they are only a half game out of a wild card spot and I don’t think they got better with this trade. At least not today right now.

With some of the prospects the Red Sox have, time for the youth movement. Devers goes to a team that has a 3B in Chapman, so DH for him. Giants are ALL IN this year, and in future years with both him and Chapman in the line up.

This is very reminiscent of the Red Sox/Dodgers deal from 2012 when the Sox dumped Crawford and Beckett in exchange for 5 fairly minor players. That trade set up Boston for the World Series the next year. At least this time they didn’t have to attach a layer of Adrian Gonzalez’s caliber to get things done. Sometimes you just have to reallocate your money when you realize it is not working. I think this could be a brilliant move by Boston.

And I really think this is bad for Devers. San Francisco has never been a hitter’s haven for anyone other than Barry Bonds. He should be thankful that his money is guaranteed because I think his career numbers will end up about 20-25% less than they would have in Boston.

Are you kidding me, Carl Crawford was terrible and Josh Beckett was way past it. Devers is in his prime and is 28. He’s playing with his best approach in years and is hitting really well

Yeah but Adrian Gonzalez was in his prime and hitting really well. Devers is kind of a combination of the three. His game is fine, but his attitude and demeanor made the deal necessary. They had a choice to dump him now while someone wanted him or keep a clubhouse cancer for the next decade.

History? That’s kind on an ineffectual way to look at it. He’s only played 3 games at Oracle.

Watching on ESPN they had Statcast saying 11 of his 2Bs at Fenway would have been HRs at Oracle. And, I forget how many singles off the green monster there was, but many would have been HRs or XBHs at other parks, including Oracle. The monster robs guys of HRs on a regular basis. Fenway is fairly neutral, and Oracle is not bad for anything other than HRs.

From 10,000 feet in the air, this is a tremendous trade for Boston. They have a ton of payroll flexibility to keep Bregman, lock up Mayer/Anthony, trade from their still present depth for a pitcher at the deadline.

Why would you trade one of the best hitters for four bags of balls? Hitters like Devers do not grow on trees. I guess we are going to go to another rebuild. If we were going to contend this year then trading Devers doesn’t make sense. Bregman will be gone too. Should just go ahead and trade Duran. This ownership group doesn’t have a clue of what they are doing! Just call us the Rockies.

I’m totally speculating, as I’m a Mets fan, and don’t know the ins and outs of Boston’s payroll situation and needs, but is it possible the Red Sox did this because they intend to make a big run at Kyle Tucker in the offseason, and wanted to clear some money? Devers might not age particularly well, either. Bat speed has been declining (2025 < 2024 < 2023), his already poor in-zone contact rate is one of the worst in the league, he’s a poor defender, etc. And this is a weird move for the Giants, considering how their ballpark absolutely nerfs lefty hitters. Then again, the Giants are run by maybe the least qualified POBO/GM hire in recent memory, a guy they can’t even fire because he’s part of the ownership group (funny how quiet the people who constantly shout about “DEI” are about that. Maybe he just looks like he should be in charge). The whole thing is bizarre.

Losing the contracts of Buehler, Giolito, and Chapman (approx. $50 million) with all their young offensive talent should have allowed for Devers AND Tucker, but perhaps they are looking to reallocate to pitching.

I’m sure they’ll do a great job spending there.

As you say, he produces. And with the deferrals, his deal is a good bit less than face value.

The team is essentially tied for the WC at this point, which, makes the move somewhat perplexing. There’s definitely more going on that we as fans haven’t heard,

GA – there were reports that Devers asked for a trade in the off-season.

This trade is going to look real bad in two years when the Sox cycle through yet another CBO and Devers is raking with SFG. Similar to the Betts deal.

YBC – yep very unhappy. As GA said, I’d they got something better back I get it. But they will still have an issue with the the roster because they will need to activate Yoshida. So trading Devers for chump change just to get Yoshida ABs isn’t the right answer. It’s no where close to the right answer.

Swan – I don’t think this actually changes how aggressive they could be.

The Sox print money. Unless you mean offloading Devers gives them more room with the luxury tax and FSG would be more willing to take on big salary at the deadline, but if that’s the case then we go back to the whole “FSG is cheap” argument that has been going around for the past few years.

Yeah, totally referring to the luxury tax line. I’m hoping their off season willingness to approach the threshold continues during the season. They’re still in the hunt and if they can land a Pablo Lopez or Zach Gallen, they’d be right there.

Replacing the bat is gonna take a group effort. I don’t feel great pinning our hopes on Toro, Narvaez,Romy and a couple of uber-prospects. A lot of things need to go right in that scenario.

If I were a Red Sox fan I’d be really excited. The team bolstered its position of biggest need (starting pitching). They cleared up space to add pitching. And in the same way that SF losing Harrison doesn’t hurt so much with Whisenhunt, Roupp, etc waiting to get their chance….the Red Sox just added Roman Anthony and Kristian Campbell to their lineup with Marcelo Mayer likely following soon. It’s a big loss in Devers, but opens the door for others. Most importantly, Breslow gets to establish his team more rather than being weighed down by Blooms decisions.

Anyone who believes that hogwash is moron. Devers was never anything but genuine, teammates love him, and he always played as hard as he could even if he wasn’t a defender worth a lick. He played incredible baseball in Boston even through injuries and terrible managing. He deserved much more than the betrayal the Red Sox gave him. Good Luck Raffy in San Fran. Hicks is partly financial. Wasn’t helping the Giants much and they have prospects ready to supplant him. Saves the Giants 30M over the next 2 1/2 years. Could be a decent piece in the Red Sox bullpen with long relief or emergency starter ability (Garrett Whitlock’s role, but better).

Harrison could be a stud. Likely to slot in anywhere from 3rd to 5th in the rotation for years to come. A quick triple A assignment right away might mean they want to make a couple adjustments with him first.

Tibbs has great lefty power. The kind of player that Boston develops well. He’s like a $100 lottery ticket while Bello is a $5 ticket. As much as it’s tougher bringing in younger prospects, it gives the team the ability to develop the talent.

Was awesome for a couple months last year (which makes sense as a guy gets used to starting). Hicks is more money-saving for the Giants and gives the Red Sox bullpen support, and could go 3-4 if needed with the ability to start in emergencies. None of that says he’s an elite starter, but it’s a role playoff teams need filled.

I wonder if him being around was affecting the clubhouse, he’s not a very good defensive third baseman but imo the offense he provides offsets it. The prospects seem to be more of the prize from what I can tell. Hicks walks way too many guys, Harrison is still young enough to make something of himself if he can cut down on the longball and some walks. Pretty wild trade though this early, definitely makes you think Devers was being disruptive based on the timing and return in the trade.

I will say one thing in Giants favor. Because the contract (and Devers’ attitude) are so bad, they are not giving up much. Harrison has the most upside. Tibbs, last years #1 draft pick has been a bust. Hicks is a one-trick pony relief pitcher making a lot of money. Bello was just ranked #22 by Logenhagen (Fangraphs) in a weak system. He is 19 though, maybe some upside…

This is all about dumping a one-dimensional (admittedly talented) hitter with a bad contract and an even worse attitude if your Boston.

I don’t think this is a bad package for the Sox at all considering the money owed/freed up.

Harrison and Tibbs have real value and are nice pieces to get back. I could see Hicks having success back in the pen and being flipped soon, maybe even this deadline.

Think Hicks has a contract thru 2027. Usual deadline deals involve expiring contracts. Kinda doubt anyone would give even a six pack for Hicks considering the contract.

Could be a win win for both teams.

Chapman is out until the end of July. Giants get a bat long term.

They have had issues with most FA signings as non pitcher’s prefer not to sign in SF due to a heavy pitcher friendly park.

Red Sox cut payroll while adding to their MLB roster pitching that required reinforcements. Plus what seems to be a couple of decent prospects.

One of the best trades in Giants history! Hicks is bad and has a big contract. Tibbs is struggling in the minors. Harrison could very well be All-Star caliber someday, he’s flashed brilliance, but someday may never come. Buster timed this perfectly – during the Dodger series national broadcast. This is a big statement to the overrated Dodger$ and Pads.

Has Devers ever played 2nd base? Could he do it? That would be the best fit once Chappy returns.

    Great going, Buster!!!!

No way devers could play 2B. He can’t even really handle 3B. He’s not great at moving to cover, and, is an error machine.

Keep him as a DH where he can only help, not hurt

The Red Sox like what they are getting from Romy Gonzalez and Abraham Toro, more at bats for Rob Refsnyder, Yoshida returning to the lineup, but there is no replacing Devers production — he was hitting .275/.400/.500 on the season — Boston gets back the payroll flexibility — getting out from under the long term money opens up a lot of avenues, primarily a long term extension for Bregman.

To get anything at all in return is somewhat of a coup, and the Red Sox got two promising prospects in Harrison and Tibbs, and a decent bullpen arm. I think they are still competitive after the trade, I wouldn’t be surprised if they pull a Boston underdog story out of their wazzoos – Roman Anthony is no Rafael Devers. Abraham Toro isn’t Rafael Devers either, but they still have a decent lineup, decent starting pitching and the bullpen has been a strength.

Giants taking a contract that will hurt their pocketbook and limit other signings for many years. All for a player that refuses to be a first baseman. He’s just a DH. Only thing that was in their favor was getting rid of Hicks. Sure Devers is a top bat. But they are paying for a top bat that comes with a glove and speed.

Hugely unlikely in today’s fast, faster, fastest game.

How many players are there in their mid30s worth a lineup slot, let alone $32m a year, even expanding the pool from DH to DH-1B-LF, especially players who were only 3-4 bWAR players at their peak? (Which rules out someone like Freddie, who was significantly better than Devers at Freddie’s best.)

Sox are 1 game over .500, they’re not exactly lighting the world on fire. If the Deadline was today, they probably would be sellers. I think they got some decent young players back, with some good ceilings.

As i said in my post, we got a lot more back then Marlins did for Stanton couple young pitchers and the Giants number 4 prospect James Tibbs. Too bad he’s a lefty tho, it just figures, any good player they get is left handed lol..

Well, the Sox got two young pitchers and the number 4 overall prospect from the Giants to unload that big contract. All things considered, if the Sox had waited and it had gotten out he was on the block, the return could’ve been much worse.

Consider what the Marlins got for Stanton and this trade looks like a semi win for Boston.

12 is a lot cheaper than 30, Plus they got rid of a guy who is causing turmoil in the clubhouse. That alone is worth the 12.

But, if he turns it around, he could possibly be flipped at the deadline, never know, sometimes guys just need a new team and things turn around, it did for Pivetta at least for a little while.

As a Sox fan this is a win for both teams here. Starting with SF, Buster Posey finally got the Giants the power bat that has eluded them through free agency for the past 4 off seasons. For BOS they shed what had become a cancer (yes, I am sure that much more will come out on this, and YES this is a situation the team created), they shed a massive amount of money off the books for a guy who only DH’s now and is a mediocre 3rd baseman at best. The kids are all here and the team is hot right now. Bregman is by far a much better player than Devers and teammate as well. This gives the front office a ton of room to go out and get some real fire power to go chase the Yankees down. They’ve taken 5/6 from them including a sweep, are 7-2 in there last 9 and have been winning series. This team is taking a turn during a youth movement. Breslow really needs to go get them something to push them over. Good veteran teammates with playoff experience, good clubhouse guys. And they should absolutely waste no time now that the drama has left for SF……sign bregman long term and get rid of the opt outs. Again, this is a win on both sides.

this is quite the salary dump.

to me, this trade feels like the Nomar trade in ’04- Nomar was unhappy. Devers was unhappy, and a bold move needed to be made in both cases. by many accounts, Devers wanted out and the Sox wanted Devers gone. both sides win, though the timing is weird, considering the team is playing its best baseball of the season right now. Devers finishes his time in Boston mashing a home run. Sell high. save a lot of money.

It will be interesting to see how the Sox try to spend the saved money going forward, as free agents are going to be harder to attract after this fiasco.
In the last few seasons- Betts- traded for very little in return-. only Wong remains. Bogaerts- gone. Sale- traded for next to nothing.
Now the Sox trade their franchise player for what on paper seems to be not much in return- except the saved money.

It’s safe to assume that Chapman will be gone after the season if not sooner, Bregman likely will be gone. The youth movement is in full swing.

There’s a lot of work ahead to move the franchise forward. will this trade be a colossal bust? or a way forward? only time will tell.

baytown- fair point. I should have worded that part differently. I’m fine with the move personally- Devers needed to go and the team now has some financial flexibility because of the move- but I think for many Red Sox fans, the return will be seen as underwhelming given how much Devers makes.
i like Harrison a lot, Hicks will help a tired bullpen and maybe be a closer, and you’re right about Tibbs. I don’t profess to know the Giants minor league system, so I’ll take your word on Bello.

Could be a win/win for all- I hope it turns out that way.

With Hicks included, the Red Sox have approx 10M extra this year, 20M extra the next 2 seasons. And 5/150M after that. Might not be money they immediately replace. But helps a ton in the longterm. Gives them a chance to see what they have in their young core though before the deadline.

Good deal for the Red Sox

I expect the Red Sox to have a much better season now. The Giants get an excellent hitter but a poor fielder if they can get him to play on the field. They also get this huge salary to pay and have to put up with his huge ego. Now if he would change his attitude and be willing to do as the Giants ask then it could work our for both teams. For now time will tell but I expect Boston to be the real winner here.

It is always the player in Boston who is the problem, never the imbeciles that run the team. So far our two non Christian Baseball Ops people Chaim Bloom and Craig Breslow have traded Future Hall of Fame Players for Garbage. Betts and now Devers. The top player Tibbs is hitting .245 in Singe A and Harrison has struggled this year with an ERA close to 5.00. Hicks has struggled as well and Bello is not considered a top pitching prospect. Breslow could not even get an established major league player for one of the top hitters in the American League. Another year wasted in Boston after sweeping the Yankees this weekend too.

Great trade for Boston. Get some really nice pieces while dropping a contract that Breslow didn’t hand out. Gives him the ability to shape the team his way which is a big deal even if Devers continues to rake.

SF uses their Shohei earmarked money to add Adames and now Devers. While only giving away spare parts (from their perspective). I think the Giants made one of the worst moves in franchise history, but a lot to be happy about right now for their fans.

Now we know Devers held a grudge getting moved off 3rd. When they went to visit him on the road after Casas that must have been the last straw with his attitude Now that they have another batch of kids coming up they decided to move him.

    1) If they didn’t tell him before they signed Bregman then the Red Sod brought this on themselves.

    2) The Giants got shot down by Ohtani and Soto. They wanted that big bat and had the money. I suspect it was the only team that would eat the entire contract and at least give up two decent young guys.

It’s a great deal for the Giants, even if Devers plays first or DH. The Red Sox ruined themselves by not moving him before the season. I understand why they did this deal but they really pooched it up front.

If Devers didn’t realize or didn’t care that he was hurting his team by playing defense at 3B, then that is all on him. He was being paid to play wherever the Red Sox told him to play.

Everything that happened was on his shoulders, no one else.

A $31 million AAV for a DH is never a good deal. This is one of those contracts that will age very badly.

Well all these years of following sports.. I would hear… you can’t fire the players…. Quite obviously if your Henry/ CB / or AC you can….

Interesting that after the big contracts to Chapman and Adames they still had the payroll space to add Devers’ contract. Giants finally acting like a big market team. And the core of the roster is stable for the near future.
Sad to see Harry go and wish him and Hicks the best. The need for an impact bat was clear. Kudos to Posey and Co. for not waiting and making a decisive move.

The ironic part is Devers is going from one team with a superior defensive Third Baseman to another team with a superior defensive Third Baseman. The caveat is Bregman can opt out after this season but Chapman can’t, so is it a better situation for Devers or worse?

I Imagined there would be a Ton! Of Comments. I was not Wrong !!!

Definitely has Jeff Kent Vibes to this one. And I know Sabean has been in the wings with Posey to a degree. What a find and catch by the G’s.

Devers is HOF Bound to say the least. And a left handed power hitter is exactly what this team needs right now makeup wise – With Ramos and Chapman, Adames, and Flores even too.

Lee hopefully will Stay! at the leadoff spot as he should have all year. Ramos 2. Devers 3. Chapman 4. Flores 5 Adames 6.

Yaz hitting helps a lot. The 3 new guys have helped too, The bench, vibe, experience.

Looking for a Starter. Is it Verlander ? Probably not at this point but you never know he could go on a run here. But Wisenhunt will get the call soon over Harrison traded. That’s the future.

    – So exited I saw the headline in a restaurant and jumped up out of my chair in the middle of early dinner when I saw in shock, checking the score. People were looking over and I told them too.

I’ll be bringing my son to a game soon, 3 years old to watch Devers mash.

    – The Bullpen is World series worthy. Starters are 60/40 right now. Need one more killer. And the offense should be 3/4 of the way there with maybe a few more upgrades later in the outfield.

Bravo Posey. Bravo !!!!! Go Giants.

The Red Sox just jettisoned a bad apple and got very little in return other than salary relief. I have to believe that their goal was just dumping Devers regardless of the return as long as the team he was going to agreed to eat all of the $255 million in salary he is owed.

Devers has been hitting poorly for about a month now. The past month he is hitting .247. Since a double header against the Orioles on May 24th he is hitting just .194. Since the end of the Angels series, Devers hit just .182 in 9 games against division foes Yankees and Rays. With the worst defensive skills in baseball at 3B, unless he is hitting Devers has no value.
