Alex Bregman Undergoes Arthroscopic Elbow Surgery

By Steve Adams | January 11, 2019 at 10:05am CDT

The Astros announced Friday that third baseman Alex Bregman underwent arthroscopic surgery to remove loose bodies from his right elbow earlier today. Bregman is expected to be limited at the start of Spring Training but ready for full duty by Opening Day.

Bregman, 24, made his first All-Star team in 2018 and finished fifth in American League MVP voting after hitting .286/.394/.532 with 31 home runs in 705 plate appearances for the Astros. The former No. 2 overall draft pick walked more often (96 times) than he struck out (85) — a rare and remarkable feat in today’s game.

In the event of an unexpected setback in Bregman’s recovery, the Astros do have Tyler White as an option to fill in at the hot corner. The 28-year-old White has more than 2000 innings of minor league experience at third base, so while he’s appeared in just three games there at the MLB level, the ’Stros would presumably feel comfortable playing him there on a short-term basis. First baseman Yuli Gurriel is no stranger to third base, either.

Still, with Marwin Gonzalez hitting free agency and the recent trade of J.D. Davis to the Mets, it wouldn’t be all that surprising to see the Astros add a veteran capable of playing third base on a minor league contract in the coming weeks, just to create a bit of additional depth at the position.

Why would you not do this 2-3 weeks ago?

Did he just now start feeling pain?

I was thinking, why not 2 months ago? It seems strange to have a scheduled surgery like this at such a late date.

Something probably started bothering him when he was ramping up workouts to get ready….or he doesnt want the daily grind of spring training.

Players work out all offseason, they’re not limited to in game injuries.

I’d imagine it popped up recently. Obviously they would’ve had the surgery earlier in the offseason if they knew about it. It would’ve been nice if the article explained the particulars of why now, but I’m sure it just happened.

they’d probably play Yuli at 3B and White at 1B quite often if they had to

Assuming it was just found, but seems like every year some players get surgey in January instead of October or November. Maybe they try to rehab some types of injuries first, seems like loose fragments would have been noticable while he was playing.

Diaz played 38 games at 3b for Toronto last year (in addition to 95 at 2b) and seems like the obvious fill in if Bergman isn’t available to start the season.

The obvious fill is moving Yuli to 3b and white starts at 1b.

It’s also possible they only discover it once they start getting ready for the upcoming season. A lot of them take the rest of the year off to just recover once the season ends, then start ramping things up slowly starting in January

He’s getting coverage, guessing he will use this opportunity to weigh in on politics rather than to make some comment for the benefit of his team

That’s his right! Just because you don’t share his views doesn’t anything to anyone else.

If the team was concerned enough, they could ask him to not do it as a condition of his employment, but I’m sure the players association would take issue with that. There’s probably something about it in the CBA…

Usually employment agreements do not ban selfishness. It’s just something you don’t do

I think your being pretty selfish about how you think others must act in their free time and job. Just enjoy the game.

You don’t understand the business of baseball at all do you. These guys are paid a lot of money, and the owners who are paying them need to recoup that money and make a profit. When a player selfishly takes a controversial position, the player limits the owner’s ability to profit on that players brand, which the owner has paid to do. Furthermore, taking an unnecessary controversial position as a professional athlete Paul’s attention away from other members of the team and is a major distraction for a team that is trying to win. So no I’m not being selfish. Unlike you I’m being realistic

Bet they wish they did not get rid of JD Davis. I am telling you he will be a stud third baseman. This team has lost a lot of pieces and will struggle to win AL West. Probably only win 85 games.

Not as many pieces as their division rival, SEA, while TEX keeps delaying a rebuild, LAA brings Trout in from the ledge and the A’s with no significant additions. They will be fine.

The game is about Stars… If Altuve, Bregman, Springer, Verlander Cole produce as expected they will run away with their division.

Davis was traded 5 days ago. I’m sure they became aware of the injury before that. Either way, Davis has no room on the Astros roster. It’s better that they traded him.
