Orioles, Jesus Sucre Agree To Minor League Deal

By Steve Adams | February 1, 2019 at 10:32am CDT

The Orioles are in agreement on a minor league contract with catcher Jesus Sucre, tweets USA Today’s Bob Nightengale. He’ll be invited to Major League Spring Training and would earn $850K if he makes the big league roster. Sucre can also opt out of the contract on March 22 if he’s not on the MLB roster at that point.

Sucre, 30, spent the past two seasons with the Rays, hitting a combined .232/.268/.330 with eight homers in 390 plate appearances spanning 135 games. Those numbers line up fairly well with Sucre’s career marks, though he’s more of a defensive-minded option behind the dish. Throughout his big league career, Sucre has halted 32 percent of stolen-base attempts against him, and he’s consistently registered above-average framing grades throughout his career (with the exception of last season), per Baseball Prospectus.

Presently, the Orioles have only two catchers on the 40-man roster in Chance Sisco and Austin Wynns, though they’ll also have Carlos Perez and Andrew Susac in camp competing for roster spots.

I’m a lifelong fan, but come on….there is 0% chance of that happening. We are more likely to surpass our loss total from last season than for that to happen.

That’s what needs to happen. They need to eat the next two seasons and hope they hit on a few guys currently in the system while drafting #1-#5.

I don’t know this year they don’t have Gausman, Machado, or Schoop. You can probably argue that Mancini, Givens, Bundy, and Cobb are the only MLB caliber players on the roster.

You are right but losing more than 115 games? It is really hard, a lot of things went bad when they were hitting the pitching wasn’t working and viceversa, we’ll see, I hope not, thanks..

I hope not too, but it’s a good possibility. The SP is definitely a bigger question mark than last year as is the offense. It’s going to be interesting. At least itll be mostly young guys out there losing.

Good defense…good guy overall. But can’t run… or hit. Don’t think he’ll make team anyway.

I find it funny that even this guy can’t get a big league deal to play for the Orioles. Haha

Anyone else notice that all of their catchers have five letters in their surname? Sucre, Sisco, Wynns, Perez, Susac.

    …no? Just me? Ok then
