Baseball’s 2019 Rule 4 amateur draft will take begin on Monday, June 3rd. Between now and then, you may wish to acquaint yourself further with some of the young players who’ll be selected. There’ll be new mock drafts and added analysis in the days to come, but this slate of links provides an excellent starting point:
- When the clock strikes midnight on the 2nd, the possibility of draft compensation for Dallas Keuchel and Craig Kimbrel will vanish … thus finalizing the overall allocation of draft picks and bonus availability.
- Fangraphs mock draft & draft board
- MLB.com mock draft & top 200 draft rankings
- Keith Law mock draft (subscription required) & top 50 draft rankings (subscription required)
- Baseball America mock draft (subscription required) & top 500 draft rankings (subscription required)
- The Athletic beat reporter selections (subscription required)
- One notable draft-eligible player, Carter Stewart, has elected instead to head to Japan. And you may also want to catch up on the latest chatter regarding the possibility of an international draft.

I think you meant Rule Four
Jeff Todd
Yeesh that’s a doozy of a typo. Guess I’m just accustomed to writing Rule 5. Fixed.
misterb71
Sorry, but the rule 5 draft takes place during the offseason at MLB’s winter meetings. The June draft where amateurs are selected to possibly join the pros is actually the rule 4 draft.

Send the times to Keith Law since he no-showed every draft when he worked for the Blue Jays.

What happened to Rule 1, 2 and 3 drafts?
Did they ever exist?
I know back in the day there used to be a winter draft.
Was that one of those?
Jeff Todd
Just happens to be how it was laid out …
Rule 1: Circuits
Rule 2: Player Limits and Reserve Lists
Rule 3: Eligibility to Sign Contract, Contract Terms, and Contract Tenders
Rule 4: First-Year Player Draft
Rule 5: Annual Selection of Players
Rule 6: Selected Players
etc, etc
We discussed some aspects of rules nine and ten just the other day: mlbtraderumors.com/2019/05/understanding-the-new-t…

There are discussions now concerning the possibility of an amateur international draft ahead of the next CBA. I wonder what Rule # will be assigned to that particular event?

I’ll just check here after the draft.

I bet baseball would be a bit more popular if you didn’t need a subscription to every hack site that thinks they have the best scoop.

We used to have “The Sporting News.” It was basically THE source for baseball. Second was Baseball America, which covered a lot of prospect news, college baseball, etc.

Sitting in-favor of high priced talent? Or is talent too strong a word?

In response to the Rockies q-i follow minor league #’s closely and have been saddened by the lack of success by Pint and Nikorak.

Jeff, historical question regarding your first sentence: Is this the first year that the Rule 4 Draft will take begin?
Aaron Sapoznik
I’d be somewhat surprised if the White Sox select prep SS C.J. Abrams with the #3 overall pick in the event that both Adley Rutschman and Bobby Witt Jr. are off the board as expected and projected by some of the sites noted here.
I believe that Tim Anderson will remain as the White Sox future core SS. I also have a strong feeling that 22-year old Cuban SS Yolbert Sanchez will be inking a deal with the White Sox at the beginning of the 2019 international signing period on July 2nd. Sanchez is eligible to sign in the current period which ends on June 15th but has yet to do so. It has been speculated that Sanchez already has a $2M offer on the table from a team who cannot spend at that level in the current period. I maintain that club is the White Sox who have never shied away from spending dollars in the international market, least of all with Cubans as Jose Abreu and Luis Robert prove. Sanchez also happened to be a former teammate of Robert back in Cuba.
I believe that the White Sox will indeed select Andrew Vaughn with their first pick on June 3rd assuming both Rutschman and Witt are selected with the first two picks. There is little doubt that Rutschman would be the White Sox top choice if he somehow slid past the Orioles and Royals but that scenario is very unlikely. If the White Sox pass on Abrams and do select Vaughn on Monday then that could be the first indication that Sanchez might be heading to the South Side as soon as July 2nd.
