Dinelson Lamet Begins Rehab Assignment

By Jeff Todd | May 29, 2019 at 10:22am CDT

The Padres announced today that righty Dinelson Lamet will begin a rehab assignment. He’ll open at the High-A level.

Lamet underwent Tommy John surgery last April, so this will represent his return to competitive pitching. His timeline will surely be determined by his progress on the mound, but this move will start a thirty-day clock for the completion of the rehab assignment. (As Dennis Lin of The Athletic notes on Twitter, the team can request up to three ten-day extensions if needed.)

Barring a setback, Lamet will presumably be activated before the end of June. It’s possible he’ll move back into the San Diego rotation at some point next month, though the club could also ultimately decide upon an optional assignment depending upon what he shows.

Lamet entered the year with 1.130 years of MLB service already accrued. He’s continuing to pick up service while on the injured list, so he’ll finish the season with 2.130 years on his ticker if he spends all (or virtually all) of the year in the majors once his rehab assignment wraps up. That could put him in line for Super Two status next year, though the precise cutoff is not yet known.

For the Friars, Lamet’s progress could have a significant bearing on the team’s postseason hopes. He showed plenty of promise in his debut campaign of 2017, working to a 4.57 ERA with 10.9 K/9 and 4.3 BB/9 over 114 1/3 innings, and could represent a notable addition to a rotation that has (not unexpectedly) gone through some ups and downs to this point of the season.

A pair of other San Diego players are also set to begin their own rehab assignments. Utilityman Jose Pirela and outfielder Franchy Cordero will report to Triple-A, the former today and the latter on Friday.

DFA Pirela for sure. Perdomo the reliever still has a shelf life to me. He pitches play late in games for short stints.

Sure, build him up as a starter, but wouldn’t expect Lament to be the solution to the Padres rotation, although I could see him being an effective arm out of the pen. He can always return to the rotation next season.

To be honest with you, his looming return couldn’t be more perfect with the timing of the teams recent success. If he can be back in a month, he becomes the 5th starter the Padres haven’t been able to find.

The shuttle of Margavicious, Quantrill and Avila has not worked yet. Logan Allen is still working to deserve and opportunity however Lamet could force his way into the picture if he is able to show he is effective and healthy in his rehab assignment.

He returns and Garrett Richards looms as well, getting those guys back are essentially mid-season acquisitions that are going to help keep the young arms fresh and at their inning limits.

When they signed Richards, they said he was on the shelf for all of 2019. Has this changed?

If only Frenchy was a bit better defensively. Don’t have much confidence in him patrolling center. Although can’t be worse than Myers in cf. (Myers has been serviceable, I will say)
Safe to say Margot has worked himself out of long term plans for pads. Surprising that he has regressed so much since rookie season. Dude looks clueless at the plate & 4 walks all season is not going cut it.
Would rather see lament come out of bullpen, have no faith in anyone not named Yates. Wingenter almost trustworthy but still walks a few to many & Stammen seems like he’s more suited for 6,7th ing duty than 8th. The rest are pretty much borderline garbage. Getting Castillo back would be terrific as well.
Rather trade for a legit tor. Going be facing 40 man roster crunch soon, might as well try & trade a few kids to make those decisions easier. Bauer, Thor high on my list. Hopefully the Mets continue to struggle & Thor becomes available bye the trade deadline. Maybe even Strasburg or Scherver if Nats keep tanking & decide to throw in the towel on season.
And for ***** sake bring up Urias, enough with kinsler. The fact that he even still gets starts in front of Garcia (Garcia .357 obp is pretty dam impressive) is mind boggling. Not sure why we haven’t seen Urias yet. Kids got nothing left to gain from facing AAA pitching. Throw him in there for 70-100 ab & let’s see what we got in him.

As you say that Kinsler lines out lowering his average, and makes an awful defensive play where instead of getting a double play he gets no outs. He is terrible

Urias will be back soon. He needed to work on a few things and they gain a year of service time if he is down until the 30th I believe. Guess is Kinsler will be released then.
One of the starters you listed as trade options would be awesome! Also some bullpen help would be huge.
As for Cordero. I’m a huge fan. However he needs to be more consistent at the plate and at all three outfield spots. I have to remind myself that he was a shortstop that was moved to the outfield so he hasn’t been doing it his entire career. That gives me hope.
In the end I would like to see Margot moved with prospects for pitching. Unfortunately I feel his value is so low right now that they will have to give up someone special to get the help they need. On the other hand they do have a kid killing the ball in the mid west league that is blocked by Tatis. Edwards is hitting just short of .380 and is top ten in most offensive categories. Could be a chip to move.

They should start developing Edwards as a CF. Obviously no one but Tatis is playing SS until 2025 at the earliest and I get a sense that trading Edwards might be another Trea Turner situation.

If Urias needed to work on anything, it doesn’t show in his approach at the plate. He hasn’t changed his leg kick or overall approach and he is still hitting for great average and walking at a great rate.

I may be talking out of turn, but I think the only reasons he was sent down was to keep an extra year of team control and to get him regular at bats. If that is the case, he will be up in late June or early July. Maybe as late as the All Star break.

The Padres may have been hoping Kinsler would get hot and they could move him in a trade that brings back a valuable pitcher.

Think about the infield of Hosmer, Urias, Tatis, and Machado for the next 5+ years. If you are a Padres fan that has to be pretty exciting for you.

The Padres don’t care at all about the extra year of control on Urias. If they did they would have done the same with Tatis Jr.

Incredibly enough, Myers has been the best fielder for the Padres this season. 2 OAA vs 1 for Margot and Renfroe and -1 for Reyes.

No surprise there from kinsler. He’s looked pathetic all year on defense. Not to mention his bone headed base running this year as well. Nothing more annoying than listening to him say “I play aggressive, I’d do it again”. Umm, no thx. He clearly can’t catch up to a legit Mlb fastball either. Complete waste of a roster spot. Shocking that Green still gives him ample starts at 2b & bats him leadoff with his monstrous .245 obp. Like wtf are we doing here?
The fact that kinsler started the next gm after his “f you” to the fans shows Green has no balls.. Kinsler should of been dfa that next day. Eating the 8 million would hurt but he’s just not a Mlb caliber ball player anymore. We ate the 13 million to Headley & dfa him quite early in 18. (Great call on Mitchell…….Lol) Time to do it again. Aj should take some heat for offering him 2 years as well. Very dumb signing. I Understand Manny was yet to be considered a serious option. But nowhere did Kinsler show he was worthy of an mlb contract in 18 yet alone a 2 year deal! & his “leadership ability” was complete bs. See his comments at the world baseball classic. In 17. Especially considering the strong Latin makeup of the pads. Wasn’t that what Hosmer brought to the team? At least he’s back to his odd year quality of play. Been pleasantly surprised bye Hosmers past month, dudes crushing the ball.
Can’t wait to get Green out of here as well. Time for him to be on his way. He’s yet to prove he brings any positive influence over the young ball players. His game day managing skills has yet to be impressive nor does he seem to have a feel for handling a bullpen. Give me Barajas or let’s make a real splash & go after Girardi.
Xavier looks legitimate, move him to cf or 2b. Left side of infield looks set for years to come. Could be the leadoff hitter who actually gets on base, has elite speed & hits from left side of plate that pads have lacked for years. Going take quality prospects to acquire a true ace. Would hope that with are deep farm we might be able to hold onto him. Naylor, Potts, Reed all expendable to me, possibly one of are current Mlb outfielders (obviously prefer Myers & a boat load of money to be sent with him outta town. Really don’t understand such a backloaded deal. Been payed 22 mill over first 3 years with a whopping 60 mill owed over next 3) & one of Morejon, Weathers, Patino + one of are lefty late rotation guys, Lauer, Lucchesi, Margevicius. Would love to hold onto Patino & Morejon but wouldn’t be shocked to see one of them sent out. .Would be a shame to not see Morejon pitch in big leagues after investing over 20 mill in the kid already & everything your hear or read about Patino is nothing but rave reviews.
Hoping Aj can make a deal without them included & Edwards but realistically just gotta hope Aj picks the right ones to deal.
Extremely important that who ever we acquire is around for several years to come.

Of course the Padres care about control. To say otherwise is ludicrous. We are talking about tens of millions of dollars. They caved to their $300 million man in Tatis’ case.

Urias is still in AAA while hitting .364/.457 with a 1..200+ OPS. I would say that if it was about performance, he would be in the majors.

If they cared about control they certainly would have kept Tatis down. Getting the extra year on him was more important than anyone else who has come up while Preller has been the GM. Had nothing to do with Machado (who was already signed by that point and had no say in when Tatis got called up).

Hitting a bunch of dingers in the PCL doesn’t tell us much. What Urias needs to do is stop striking out and go back to driving the ball into the gaps rather than selling out for power like he was doing last year and early this year. His K% in AAA is 3% lower than what it was last year. So he appears to have made progress for what it’s worth.

Good luck getting rid of Myers with that contract. You won’t get anything of value for him. As forr the rest of your comment, it was very hard to read and follow who you want to keep and are willing to trade.

To all Padre fans desiring an ace. The trade will hurt. You will have to give up players that you do not want to lose. Remember it will hurt the team that is trading the ace so they need to get value back in return.

Preller, Green, Tatis, and Machado all said that Machado lobbied to get Tatis included in the opening day lineup. That is no secret. When you pay someone $300 million, you want them happy. Of course, it played a part in the team’s decision on Tatis.

.462 OBP. 13.6% BB rate. Like they used to say about Rickey, Urias gets on. No one really cares if you strike out anymore as long as you hit for power and get on base. Urias’ .741 SLG % and 1.203 OPS are ample evidence that he is doing both. I think Urias has made his point. Nothing really to learn at the AAA level.

If Preller cared about service time at all Tatis wouldn’t have started the season in the Majors. Period. He was the one guy it made sense to manipulate the service time of. Machado can lobby for him all he wants but at the end up the day it isn’t up to him. What was he going to do if they didn’t have Tatis on the roster to start the season, opt out after 2023? I say “Go ahead.”

Urias is in the minors to cut down on strikeouts and, as you said, to get everyday at-bats. If it was about service time he’d already be back up.

Doesn’t really matter how many runs were scored in his first rehab assignment. That he got through it healthy and feels good the day after are the most important things. Was he throwing free and easy? It was nice to see that he hit mid 90’s. Increased velocity, stamina, and better results will come with more starts. Padres could see him as soon as June 29th.
