Yankees Return Giancarlo Stanton To Injured List Due To Left Calf Tightness

By Mark Polishuk | May 22, 2019 at 7:14pm CDT

7:14pm: Stanton will be shut down for 7-10 days before being re-evaluated, manager Aaron Boone told media (including the New York Post).

3:26pm: Just two days after Giancarlo Stanton began a minor league rehab assignment, the Yankees announced that Stanton has been returned to the injured list since the slugger is experiencing left calf tightness.

Today’s news is the latest setback in what has been a frustrating recovery period for Stanton, who originally sent to the IL after only three games due to a left biceps strain.  While rehabbing that injury, Stanton then suffered a left shoulder strain that required a cortisone injection in early May.

All systems were seemingly go when Stanton took the field for the high A-ball Tampa Tarpons this week, though the former NL MVP has now been sidelined again.  No information is yet known about the nature of Stanton’s calf problem, though such injuries are sometimes difficult to evaluate on a strict timetable.  Since Stanton will now be out of action for an even longer period of time, the Yankees could consider shifting him to the 60-day injured list to create 40-man roster space, should such a need arise.

Despite playing without Stanton and a variety of other injured stars for much of the season, the Yankees are still a remarkable 30-17, and sit atop the AL East standings.  The combination of Brett Gardner, Clint Frazier, and Cameron Maybin will continue to handle corner outfield duties while Stanton and Aaron Judge are sidelined, with Mike Tauchman as the top depth option at Triple-A.

Lefty reliever, Mike Stanton, retired in 2007.

I have no idea why this is news?

It’s because Jeff Nelson was calling Yankees-Mariners games.

What? He was already on the IL.

He had already started his rehab assignment so by putting him back on the IL they won’t have to bring him up in twenty days.

I know it’s not relevant in this situation.
However, theoretically, does this mean that he can’t be called up until another 10 days are up? Even though he wasn’t on the active roster?

I am not sure, but I would imagine so. It does not affect his timing on the IL (as they can transfer him to the 60-day IL if they think it is necessary and it would go back to the original IL date). I read that he cannot begin a new rehab assignment for five days (not sure if that is true, but sounds good since teams might manipulate the rehab clock if they could just put the player back on the IL and then have them start a new rehab assignment right away).

That makes no sense. Regardless of whether or not he was in a rehab assignment or not, he was still on the IL. You’re not off the IL and your timer doesn’t reset until you’re actually activated.

I don’t think the blame lays with anyone especially the training staff. I think it’s basically the same guys as the last 8 years. Besides. these athletes know about their bodies.

Across baseball, it seems as if everyone’s hitting the 10 day IL this season.I think it’s too early to place guys on the list for lil boo boos just to give them rest.

I’m sorry but you have a dozen professional athletes that can’t get on the field and are suffering multiple injuries in some cases during rehab.

How long does this go on before you start looking at the people in charge of keeping them healthy.

They might know their bodies but they are also baseball players. they don’t know everything about diet and health.

How exactly does a training staff keep a player from experiencing “left calf tightness”? Stanton clearly takes care of his body but he’s always been an injury risk. Even counting a healthy 2017 and 2018 he’s only played in 120 or more games 4 of 9 big league seasons.

Gio urshella isnt going to have a .400BABIP all year only like 20 ballplayers in history have ran that and they were all during bad fielding eras when batting averages were high and nobody struck out.

The Yankees are good but theyre not a 90 win team without Judge, Stanton and Didi. That’s 100 homers, 250RBIS and a 140WRC+ between the 3.

Well he had injury problems before 2017 when he hit 59 homers. The question with him was always if he’s going to stay healthy enough to hit 50.

At least the Yankees came to this conclusion last year when they DH’d him half the time.

“What’s he going to do not help the team when he comes back” First of all I never said that. Second, you quoting what he did last year doesn’t translate to this current year at all. Lastly, he might not come back at all, or when he does might be not at full strength.
