Marlins Place Rule 5 Pick Riley Ferrell On Outright Waivers

By Jeff Todd | June 21, 2019 at 11:31am CDT

The Marlins have placed Rule 5 pick Riley Ferrell on outright waivers, per Jake Kaplan of The Athletic (via Twitter). Other organizations will have a chance to claim him; otherwise, he’ll be offered back to the Astros.

Ferrell seemed on track to crack the Marlins’ roster out of camp, but the former third-round pick ended up being forced to the injured list to open the season. He was shifted to the 60-day IL, so was not occupying a 40-man roster spot, but would have needed one upon his activation.

Despite some stops and starts in his rehab work, Ferrell has thrown 10 1/3 innings of 0.87 ERA ball over seven appearances. He allowed just three base hits, but also managed only eight strikeouts against six walks. Evidently, the Marlins weren’t sufficiently impressed to give Ferrell his first MLB opportunity.

Relievers who cannot be optioned are not really what Elias is looking for. There’s obviously a chance he could get claimed since Elias is familiar with him but I wouldn’t bet on him staying all year.

Not a requirement to be on the Mets pitching staff

Can see the Blue Jays giving his agent a ring. This one I wouldn’t mind as much as the previous zilches they’ve brought in.

It doesn’t work that way. He’s a Rule 5 draft pick, meaning the team which selected him in the Rule 5 draft (the Marlins) must keep him on their 40-man and MLB rosters for the duration of the season or he must be offered back to his original team if no other team makes a waiver claim on him.

He’s on waivers. If no other team claims him, he must be offered back to Houston, who can decline, in which case he’d remain with the Marlins. There is no “giving his agent a call”, his agent has zero say in which team claims him, if any.

I should have prefaced the running joke; the Blue Jays are in on every pitcher. My apologies.

Be honest, JimmerTrim. To you, everything that happens is evidence that the Blur Jays management is incompetent. If Kawhi signs with the Clippers, you will blame the Blue Jays.

He’s not ideal, Elias and Sig know him well, they are really short-handed right now w bullpen arms ready to jump in now.

Familiar could be a good or bad thing. The Houston FO they just left chose not to protect him or trade him for something small this offseason. So they may not be all that high on him. But Elias does know him and there is a freed up 40 man slot with Straily’s DFA’ing. Maybe he gets a shot. Hard to imagine he sticks all year with the way we shuffle pitchers from Norfolk though. And his minor league control numbers leave a lot to be desired. The last thing we need is more guys who don’t throw strikes.

True that. Though the 41st best player in the Astros system is way better that the 41st best player in the Orioles system right now…

kinda concerning id say. Marlins have a good few 40 man pitchers, but Ferrell has done well in hia rehab games. id say he’s worth a quick flyer for a handful of teams, but maybe not now.
