Mets Select Stephen Nogosek

By Connor Byrne | June 18, 2019 at 5:17pm CDT

The Mets have selected the contract of right-hander Stephen Nogosek from Triple-A Syracuse, Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News tweets. The team also recalled lefty Daniel Zamora from Syracuse. Those two will take over for the injured Jeurys Familia and the optioned Drew Gagnon.

Now 24, Nogosek entered pro baseball as a sixth-round pick of the Red Sox in 2016. They sent Nogosek to the Mets a little over a year later in a July 2017 trade for veteran reliever Addison Reed. Nogosek struggled with the Mets’ Double-A affiliate in 2018, but he has been almost impossible to score against in the minors this year. He owns a 0.57 ERA with 9.9 K/9 and 4.8 BB/9 in 31 1/2 innings divided Double-A and Triple-A in 2019, and will try to carry that success to a Mets bullpen in dire need of answers.

Nogosek has been great this year but has had all kinds of control issues in his minor league career

The Gagnon honeymoon ended fast…2 weeks ago people talked about him as the guy to give the ball to Lugo.

Yeah every year there’s a guy or 2 that they keep calling up does well for a bit then goes back to being trash. Peterson, Gillmartin, Goedell, Gagnon, geez must have something to do with the letter G..lol

Don’t forget Gsellmann, though, overall, he’s been better than those other G’s. Still, I figured he was a candidate to be optioned (if he has any remaining) a couple weeks ago. He’s improved a bit lately, though.

We’re it not for the Mets’ pen they might have swept the Cards. As is lost 3 of 4. They need help.

They selected Nogosek, but I still think they’ll sign Cody Allen as Mickey’s reclamation project. They could sign Allen and Allan at the same time, though the Padres put some pressure on them by signing their own third rounder to a record bonus. The issue is that the Padres’ pick was selected about where he should’ve been. Matt Allan would’ve gone in the first round of teams didn’t think he might honor his commitment to the Gators anyway.
