Mets To Place Jeurys Familia On Injured List

By Connor Byrne | June 18, 2019 at 4:47pm CDT

The Mets plan to place right-handed reliever Jeurys Familia on the injured list because of a shoulder issue, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com tweets.

Alarmingly for the Mets, this is the second time in 2019 that a shoulder problem has forced Familia to the IL. They previously put him on the shelf May 1. Familia fell well short of expectations before then and continued to struggle between IL stints. So far this season, the typically dependable reliever has notched a hideous 7.81 ERA/6.10 FIP with 9.11 K/9 and 6.83 BB/9 in 27 2/3 innings.

A Met and Athletic from 2012-18, Familia posted a 2.76 ERA/2.88 FIP with 9.45 K/9, 3.54 BB/9 and a 56.5 percent groundball rate over that 348 2/3-inning span. The success Familia enjoyed during the first several seasons of his career led the Mets to reunite with him this past winter on a three-year, $30MM contract. The move has been a disaster to this point, though, while fellow offseason relief acquisitions Edwin Diaz and Justin Wilson also haven’t lived up to expectations in 2019. Thanks in part to their woes, the Mets are four games under .500 and, for the second straight year, in possession of one of baseball’s worst bullpens.

I agree.. I don’t wish injury on anyone either but he is beyond fixable. He has probably only had 3 clean innings all year. It’s always a walk.. a hit batter, a hit, run, then runs.. he’s terrible. I hated the signing from day 1. No reason to keep recycling guys that sucked when you got rid of him. I just don’t get it, I feel this team has talent and the second they sniff .500… well let’s lose 5 in a row.. ridiculous.

How can you guys say such things. I am reporting you for speaking badly about the Mets.

That’s my “mets2020” impersonation. I know, it needs a little work.

.This was all part of the plan from Brody. Now tomorrow they’ll activate Lowrie and use him in the set up role. .. .. 50 million dollars. A total embarassment! And why is Callaway and Riggelman not on the unemployment line. The worst i ever seen since 1962 when i was 6 yrs old. Atleast back than they were suppose to be bad. Go bring in Gerardi. Move Wheeler to the Yankees in a trade for Frazier. Some how….

What are they supposed to do? This is the roster. That is BVWs fault, not the folks in the dugout. Just about every move he made this winter was the wrong move.

Doubt that Cashman would spoil his string of good moves and trade Frazier for Wheeler. Wheelers’ not that good and is injured too often.

Frazier would not accept the trade—why would my good young player want to play for the disfunctional Mets

Every time he sucks so bad he should be released they put him on IL and claim he’s hurt. BS

Now when you stink it up, you must be injured & not just bad. Someone should tell Mickey doing same thing over & over & expecting different outcome is insanity.
