Yankees Designate Kendrys Morales For Assignment

By Steve Adams | June 25, 2019 at 10:42am CDT

The Yankees announced Tuesday that they’ve reinstated first baseman/designated hitter Kendrys Morales from the injured list and designated him for assignment. New York also optioned righty Jonathan Holder to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and recalled lefty Stephen Tarpley in his place.

Morales’ roster spot has looked to be in jeopardy since Didi Gregorius returned and the team and added another healthy option to the infield mix. He dodged one bullet and quite likely had his Yankees tenure prolonged due to the calf strain that landed him on the IL 12 days ago, but his tenure in the Bronx now looks to have reached its conclusion. With Luke Voit and the newly acquired Edwin Encarnacion now likely to split time between first base and DH, the Yankees simply don’t have room on the roster for Morales.

The 35-year-old Morales mustered only a .177/.320/.242 line through 75 plate appearances with New York while splitting first base/DH duties with Voit.  It’s been a rough season overall for the veteran slugger, who has followed up a solid 2018 season at the plate (.249/.331/.438) with a .194/.313/.253 effort in 201 plate appearances between Oakland and New York. The Yankees will gauge interest in Morales, if they haven’t done so already, and if there’s no suitor in a trade, he’ll likely be released and return to the open market in search of a new opportunity.

Should’ve worded it this way..Boone makes out the lineup card he’s instructed to by the FO. Most GM’s control who’s in the lineup. An example was the Phillies and Mets recently. Besides this person is constantly whining about Boone.

JaysForDays should have known that. That’s how John Farrell talked his way to Boston; Anthopoulos had too much control over the lineup. That is why Gibbons was re-hired, that is why we’d see overmanaging in 2014 and 2015 and that is why Gibbons did his best work 2016 and 2017 when he was left alone.

I enjoyed looking back at all the Yankee fans liking this pick up a month ago.

    mlbtraderumors.com/2019/05/athletics-trade-kendrys…

Now with EE hitting .115, I wonder if he’s next to go. These Yankee scouts and their advanced data… are they still patting themselves on the back for getting Voit? He’s up to .268 now. Beats when he was in the .220 range.

The Yankees aren’t about to give up on a guy before he even reaches 50 plate appearances, especially considering EE was really good before the trade to NY.

He is trolling. Look at Voit’s projected numbers- if he hits them he really should be considered for MVP. .270, 40 HRs 110 rbi and 880 ops- take that everyday all day. He is a great player and even better because they needed a first basemen. To his point about the scouts he does have one. They needed a first baseman because they designated Chi Man Choi the year before and he is doing quite well with the Rays. The Yankees have more than their share of mistakes as well.

Voit almost has a 100 strike outs by the all star break. Has a negative defense rating playing part time 1B/DH. His numbers are about as a good as JD Martinez during a down year. To think there are goofs saying he could be in the running for MVP… LOL

Everyone is on pace for 50 homerun. Juiced baseball has taken value of dinger and big drops.
EE has to do OBP side of OPS in order to make for sustain on roster. Came so cheap, that not too scary to dump again.

I can see Encarnacion being the 2nd likeliest (either him or Alonso) to reach 50 HR’s with Yelich being the 1st, mainly cause he’s arguably been the best homerun hitter in the 2010’s and gets to play the rest of his season at Yankee Stadium.

I have yet to see the Yankee lineup cracking on all cylinders. Still running the 4th outfielder out there. In NO order this is the lineup day in and day out I wanna see

    Edwin Encarnación
    Didi Gregorius
    Aaron Hicks
    Aaron Judge
    DJ LeMahieu
    Gary Sánchez
    Giancarlo Stanton
    Gleyber Torres
    Luke Voit

Can you please for the love of god stop running Bret Garbage out there already. He went 0-4 last night. I would like to finally watch the games please. How long is it gonna take to ease Judge and Stanton out there?

I told everyone Brett Garbage was NOT going to be a 4th out fielder he’s going to play every darnn DAY!

Bring up Clint and DFA this little piece of Garbage!
If anyone disagrees with the lineup I posted your clearly nuits!

That’s your lineup day in and day out when it is going to happen? You put that lineup out there and pick up a stud or two or at least try to and you got a very good shot at winning the WS. Stud I mean SP.

Brett Garbage has played in 74 or the 78 games play this year.
When is it going to STOP?

Exactly, defense matters. It’s not Brett’s fault that the Yankees’ entire outfield was out for a month. Hicks missed the first month and a half and Stanton missed the first two and a half months. The Yankees are wisely bringing Judge & Stanton back slowly and people are whining about Gardner playing and lamenting not see Frazier kicking balls around in the outfield.

Just so much hate for a player on pace for a 3 WAR year.

Steven “Dumber than a Rock” Chinwood back at it again misrepresenting points i made about Greg Bird months ago. I dont know how many times i have to spell it out for you. My points about Greg Bird were that, at the time, it was a bit premature to make a stance about Greg Birds abilities given he had less than 700 career PAs and that the Yankees had such a good offense that they could risk 1B being an offensive black hole that does nothing and it wouldnt harm them in the slightest. It was not enough PAs to judge any player, especially one that has shown flashes of a good player mixed with flashes of a lost player all while the player wasnt getting consistent game time and so I said that they should give him another shot to see what he can do if given consistent game time, especially when there was no other 1B to stick out there. Now with Voit and EE, im totally fine with them putting Bird at AAA to see if they cant recover potential that was lost to injuries in crucial growing times of a players career that may have stunted said potential. How you cant get that through your thick skull, while not surprising, is mind boggling. I never claimed Greg Bird will be anything, good or bad, only that he could (meaning that its possible, not that it would happen) grow into a .260 hitter that hits over 30HR, especially with the amount of protection he would get in such a stacked lineup. The only the only time i ever claimed something about his production i was dead on the money (sometime in June or early July of 2018 i predicted that Bird would have a good month of July in which he then proceeded to have a slash line of .265/.337/.458 which was miles ahead of the numbers he was putting up before).

Dont even try to front that me and rocky are the same guy when its clear as day that you and geeson are the same guy. You’ve been more careful since i last pointed this out (not logging on immediately to reply to yourself and pat yourself on the back while you give yourself a BJ Upton) but youre still pathetic enough to slip up from time to time and try to tell me what i told you- i mean geeson.

You, geeson, and Louie”fairweather who refuses to watch the games because they arent the yankees of 98-01”Beans are the most idiotic people that frequent this site. And to think X was annoying

Oh no, someone rationalizes a point rather than having a knee jerk hot take that rivals the stupidity of Skip Bayless? Surely thats an example of someone who is brain dead while you on the other hand, a person who has nothing of substance to say ever and just hates on his own favorite team every chance he gets, are showing us strokes of genius. But did Bird not have a bit of success in his career? (he has, albeit not much, its undeniable). And youre not fine with him at AAA? Who is he hurting at AAA? Mike Fords spot? None of you know jack about any kind of player otherwise you all wouldnt be upset that a backup OFer who is better than most backup OFers and is on pace for 3 WAR despite struggling massively to begin the season is playing every other game. Since may 27th, Gardner has put up a slash line of .280/.352/.495. What are you guys even complaining about him for?

Im not even sure how you can think im rocky either. Is it simply because we both think youre a know nothing?
Also, the only other accounts i suspected to be X since his ban was Thanks and i forget the other one, i think it was X backwards. Regardless, you and your gang of know nothings can reveal the red sox jersey under your shirt now, its more than obvious by now.

sorry i missed this fight- was travelling for work from the other side of the galaxy.

benj- for the record I have been to 4 games this year and am headed to 5 and 6 in London. Stop making stupid stuff up. Louie has stated he’s boycotting. Last I checked he has every right to do so.

On the gardy front- Personally am grateful to all he’s done in the PAST. However, if hal and cash are going to tow the line with coins, why pay him 10 mil? cc 8 mil, and then Happless 17 (and for 3 years), then play cheap elsewhere???

Bird has been a failure period. At some point you have to just give up on him. seems like a good kid and has talent but sadly will need to prove it elsewhere is my guess. Voight was a shrewd move and a cash win so the bird failure is just a write-off

However, the fact remains that the one dynamic that keeps this team a contender or one of the teams to watch and not the definitive leader is Starting Pitching. To deny that Cashman has screwed the pooch is here is just blind foolishness. Anyone who doubts that had the yanks not missed out on any of the top guys the team’s projections would be better is just silly.

Call it the way it is. It doesn’t make you any less of a fan.

I agree with most of this. But to say Cashman “Screwed the pooch” is a bit over the top. Has he made some bad deals? Yes. Has he made some stellar ones ? Yes. As for starting pitching… name me an ace that was available that he wasn’t in the hunt for? Cole? He made the pirates an offer… they wanted Gleyber … would you give up Gleyber for Cole? … Verlander? There were 28 other teams that doubted he’d have the renaissance he’s had…. Trading for an ace means you have to have something to offer. Trying to find lightning in a bottle ie Paxton , Severino, Gray, Pineda .. is a hit an miss deal. It’s time and temperature of deals and then you add in agents like Boras or clubs asking you to give up every piece in your farm….it can get ridiculous. Considering all the factors I’d still say Cashman is batting .500 or above in his deals.. which is better than most. Want to sell the farm for one world championship… see Epstein and the Cubs … or Red Sox … wanna see a dynasty built for multiple championships… stay tuned.

I find it funny how some of you don’t wanna improve this team or get batter.
The starting pitching could be better and getting Gardner outta the lineup daily would make this team better. The fact that none of you like the lineup above just proves that you don’t want this team to get batter.

I take Clint over Gardner any day of the week.

Brett Gardner was an average ball player his whole life nothing more. Now he’s hardly a decent replacement.

When the Yankees remove him from the roster and they go out and spend on some real SP not the Sonny’s and Lynns of the world you’ll see them win a World Series again.

We all know Brett Garbage will wiff 100 times in the PS.

Show me a rock soild 1-9 without Brett in it and show me a daedly 1 – 2 -3 punch for a Sp rotation.

I must agree. I see many people who simply like Gardner so they are ignoring the numbers. I think Frazier is the better player at this point. He is young, cheap and played well. For all this talk of him bringing back an ace- that will not happen. Deivi Cruz is number one on that list. The most value Frazier gives the Yankees is as a starting outfielder next year. Gardner and E.E. are FA’s. The “fourth outfielder” will play in 140 games because of using the DH to give Judge and Stanton a day off. Who are you going to find that will be better than Frazier?

Well I was trying to make that point- they do not want to be in a position where Gardner represents their best option next year. I think what Louiebeans is really trying to say is there are times you cut bait with a player because you have better options. This is one of those times because come playoff time I do believe they are a better team with Frazier than with Gardner.

They will and if I’m Clint Frazier I ask to be traded. If I’m Clint I want off the Yankees.

I really thought they were going to walk away from him last year after that post season he had. I cannot believe they brought him back.

Ignore them Louie. Two thirds are bandwagoners that wouldn’t know Don Mattingly if they bumped into him coming out of a Starbucks.

I actually caught a Mattingly Foul ball at the stadium when I was younger and had him sign it outside the stadium Tampa spring training

I still think he owns a steakhouse in Evansville Indiana which I once ate at, pretty good food. In fact I think he’s a co-owner with John Fogerty in a sports bar there.

People attack you- yet what you say does appear to be true. The Yankees are a better team with Frazier than they are with Gardner. Throw this out with the “intangibles” argument- Sabathia, Paxton, Stanton, EE, Chapman, Hicks, Lemeheau, Ottavino, Britton and Didi are all experienced players. This is not 2016- Sanchez enters fourth full season, Judge as well as he was called up and injured at the end of 2016. G. Torres is in second season as well as Voit. They are not starting a rookie anywhere. Even Greg Bird was interring his 5th season. Brett Gardner provided a needed veteran presence in 2016 and 2017. This is not really a need that exists anymore and that torch has been passed.

Frazier is not as big a trade chip as people think- they have guys in the minors that are just better that any rebuilding team would prefer. If you are 3-4 years away and selling you are not looking to rebuild with Clint Frazier. Deivi Cruz and possibly Estrada, based on his play this year, will be tops on asking teams list. Service time plays a large role in trades like this and while I don’t know the exact numbers I think Frazier has amassed more time on the 25 man than people think when he was on the IL with that concussion. Right now Frazier should be penciled in as you 4th outfielder next year because as you rightfully point out the Yankees 4th outfielder plays everyday.

While you and Louie both make good points, there’s something else worth considering. The Yankees have a wellspring of outfielders. Some older like Gardner others young like Frazier. Gardner is more than a plus defender, he’s still a base stealing threat, and even when his bat is cold he sees on average 7-9 pitches per at bat. He wears out a pitchers arm. Frazier is still developing. His defense needs work, his plate discipline is improving, but not there yet. His bad speed and power are very good .. but his maturity is suspect as well. Gardner is a more steady hand in the clubhouse that already has a lot of young players. This is probably his last year with the Yankees. Frazier needs some more time to polish up. Intangibles do count for something and with the power we have in excess we can afford to let Clint take some more time to develop. Calling him garbage is categorically untrue. He’s definitely a streaky hitter, but hardly garbage.

“The Yankees are a better team with Frazier than they are with Gardner”

I disagree. First off, Gardner has a good bit better WAR/PA.

Secondly, I think Frazier’s numbers are probably a little overstated. His BABIP & HR/FB are both probably slightly over sustainable.

Lastly, and probably most importantly, Hicks will need time off with his back and shoulder. The only reasonable replacement at CF is Gardner.

IRT being a trade chip, while I like Gardner better today, Frazier could have a pretty good career with the NYY as a #4, eventually replacing Stanton when he becomes a fulltime DH. I think his NYY value is higher than his trade value.

I would like to put the best team on the field but which batter would you prefer up?

        BA OBP SLG OPS OPS+
        2019 .204 .305 .372 .677 80
        Career .234 .327 .395 .722 95

        BA OBP SLG OPS OPS+
        2019 .234 .317 .440 .756 99
        Career .259 .343 .393 .736 99

I would take the 2nd guy. FYI this is Hicks vs Gardner so if you want to make the argument that Frazier should be your 4th outfielder i have no problem with that but your starting cf should be Gardner over Hicks.

You could say it is injuries causing the averages to be lower for hicks which is possible but do you want a guy that gets hurt frequently and you have to play the roster shuffle constantly or do you want someone that produces better and plays 140+ games a year pretty much year in and out?

You’re missing plate appearances on the above. I could compare with a player who played for two weeks to a player playing all year, those numbers mean nothing without context.

Since when is a .769 OPS season ‘solid’ for a DH/1B? That was his 2018. If I was a GM, I would not want my DH hitting .769.

In 2019 it was perplexing how Boone kept him in the middle of the order when he was absolutely awful at .566 overall.

He was once a pretty good player. Maybe he can get back to that, but NY can’t be the place for him to find himself. Maybe Kansas City or Seattle will sign him for the MLB minimum – they will both finish last either way and he might figure things out and put some fans in the seats. Maybe not.

The Marlins make sense as well. Walker will likely go at the deadline and Granderson has been awful. To the Marlins Morales represents the veteran presence they want with more upside than what they have.

Alright … that’s 6 times now people are referring to me as “X”. For the record I have no idea who this guy is, and would really appreciate if some regular on here could explain it to me. My username is simply because I was born in NY and now in Nashville hence the exile. No YES network only mlbtv and a long drive for a mlb game in any direction.

X was a guy who got banned from the site. I dont even think we’re allowed to spell out his full name. his username backwards was laibax. tbh i dont think youre x, he had a different way about him. then again, it has been awhile since he posted here so im not entirely certain i am correctly remembering how he typed

dont worry about the people calling you x if youre not x
