Yankees Place Domingo German On 10-Day IL

By Mark Polishuk | June 9, 2019 at 8:58am CDT

The Yankees have placed right-hander Domingo German on the 10-day injured list due to a left hip flexor strain.  The placement is retroactive to June 8.  Southpaw Stephen Tarpley has been called up from Triple-A in the corresponding 25-man roster move.

One of many unheralded players who have stepped up for the injury-riddled Yankees this season, German has been a stalwart of New York’s rotation over the first two months.  The 26-year-old has a 3.86 ERA, 9.9 K/9, and 4.05 K/BB rate over 70 innings, starting 12 of his 13 appearances.  His most recent results, however, haven’t been as productive; 14 of the 30 earned runs allowed by German this season have come over his last 14 2/3 IP, which could indicate that hitters have started to get a book on German, or perhaps he has been hampered by his hip issue.

With German out, the Yankees are in need of a fifth starter to slot behind Masahiro Tanaka, James Paxton, J.A. Happ, and C.C. Sabathia.  The club could try to get by with openers and bullpen games (such as today’s game, as Chad Green is scheduled to “start”), though even despite the depth and quality of New York’s relief corps, that might not be a feasible answer is German is sidelined for any length of time beyond the 10-day minimum.  Nestor Cortes Jr., called up on Saturday while Tanaka is briefly on the paternity list, has been regularly starting at Triple-A this season and might get the first crack at filling German’s place.  Chance Adams could also be recalled from the minors for starting duty.

The Yankees will be fine without either one of them.

Thank g-d cash got his “pitching pitching pitching” this off season, right guys? i mean CC was a fine 5th starter b/c he is a cuddly bear in the locker room. Pax was bound to stay healthy b/c he never has been- ergo he was due, especially with yanks never having injury issues above league average, and Happ statistically is bound to age better from ages 36-39 than corbin would have from 29-35.

This team needs one thing and one thing only. An ace. not another lance lynn and not another bullpen arm. An Ace, just one freakin ace.

so frustrating to be so close to greatness only to be stopped short. I’ll wager anyone we get a 2019 version of lance lynn, with the excuse being none was available at the price he was willing to pay? and then we lose to Houston in October….

They aren’t cheap… they just spend stupidly … see happ cc and gardy for 35 mil…

As steve cin points out. Could have had Brantley and Corbin for that.

Seems like all we read about are pitching “bandaids” as far as Yankee interest. They really do need an Ace at the top and not sure Severino qualifies as that kind of guy just yet.
This team can’t hit its way past each opponent, and when they hit a patch like they are having right now…a stellar pitching performance is direly needed to break the skien!

Yanks need to call up the tigers and try to land Matt Boyd. Give the tigers Frazier and a top prospect and it’s a done deal

add Castellanos to that and throw in some more comp going the other way.. the bandaids are going to start falling off soon

Gardners back in the lineup again. How any of you can sit there and watch the Yankees with him in the lineup is crazy.

I can’t figure out how Morales is on this team. Estrada is so much more valuable than him in every part of the game.

There’s too many DH’s on this team playing in the field, Frazier for one.

Let’s sign Brett Gardner so he can bat.197 just becasue he’s a clubhouse leader.

Let’s also sign CC cuz he’s another clubhouse guy but can’t get outta the 5th inning.

The level of Stupidity the Yankees FO has is mind boggling

Hey he made contact yesterday with the helmet! Boone should be a politician when he says he got some good swings in there yesterday.

I am so frustrated with their FO right now. Been a Yankee fan since 1964. This club has all the hitting needed to win. They have great back end of the bullpen; the problem is starters that cannot go 5 inning max and weak, overused middle relief. Where the check is all of these starters that Cashman promised he’d get ? Right now they will be lucky to just make the wild card. I am disgusted…….

Not a Yankees fan here, but I’m chuckling. You guys are tied for first with an all-star team on the IL and you’re crabbing about the front office? If anything, you should be crowing about what a great job those guys did providing the team with depth. VERY few teams will have much sympathy for the Yankees just now…

It’s ridiculous ins’t it. Unfortunately reactions like this are all too common with Yankee fans. As a long time fan of the team, it never ceases to amaze or embarrass me how dumb some of their takes can be.

I don’t think CC can get out of the 4th. They’re getting schooled by the GD Indians. The Rays ain’t going nowhere, and the Sox are closing the gap. Thanks for that ace “Paxton” you promised Cash..obviously sarcasm. The all MASH unit starting rotation. Money for Gardner+Happ+CC+just a little would equal Corbin, and Brantley.

All the negative comments about our GM. Yes they built a lineup without DiDi, Stanton, Judge and Andujar.

Stop crying . This is the team. Maybe when some of the injured guys are able to play, they will make a couple trades. Frazier isn’t going anywhere til Judge and/or Stanton is back. Trading him right now would be stupid.
