Mets Likely Won’t Trade Syndergaard, Matz Unless “Overwhelmed” By Offer

By Mark Polishuk | July 11, 2019 at 7:34pm CDT

While it is becoming increasingly likely that the Mets will be sellers at the deadline, the team won’t be going into a full fire sale.  Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz are two of the names that aren’t likely to be going anywhere before the July 31st deadline, as Mike Puma of the New York Post hears from an industry source that the Mets “would likely have to be overwhelmed by a trade proposal” to deal Syndergaard or Matz.

The Mets’ reluctance to move Syndergaard is well-known, despite the fact that at least three teams (the Brewers, Astros and Padres) have shown interest already, and several more would surely join the bidding if the man they call Thor was actually shopped.  We haven’t heard much about Matz as a trade candidate this summer, and it’s interesting that he is seemingly in the same boat as the more heralded Syndergaard, though New York would have largely the same reasons to want to keep either pitcher.

Matz has a 4.89 ERA, 2.69 K/BB rate, 46.9% grounder rate, and 8.7 K/9 over 81 innings this season.  Despite some pretty decent overall advanced metrics, Matz has been once again undone by problems with the home run ball.  After posting a 1.5 HR/9 in 2017-18, that number jumped even higher to a full 2.0 HR/9 in 2019, as 20.9% of all fly balls allowed by Matz have left the yard.  Matz’s struggles peaked in June, as a string of poor outings led the Mets to remove him from the rotation, though he is slated to start on July 17 against the Twins.

Now in his fourth season as a regular, Matz has shown some flashes of brilliance for the Mets but injuries and his propensity for the home run ball have limited his value.  After generating 2.4 fWAR in his 2016 rookie season, he has been little more than a replacement-level pitcher since, with 1.3 total fWAR over his next 301 2/3 innings.  Matz hasn’t approached the type of ace-level ability Syndergaard has shown at his peak, though like Syndergaard, the Mets would arguably be selling low on Matz if they dealt him now.

Matz is in his first year of arbitration eligibility, earning $2.625MM for the season and thus in line for cost-effective salaries in both 2020 and 2021 even if Matz has a breakout next year.  Syndergaard also has two-plus years of team control remaining, though at a higher price (he is earning $6MM in 2019).  Between the control and the lack of payroll strain caused by either hurler, the Mets don’t have any particular reason to make a trade, especially since neither is pitching particularly well.

Who gives two Focks about those numbers let me look at the ERA. This new wave of statistics isn’t working out so well for these analysts and the new wave of younger managers.

        Ok….last 3 years
        ERA: 6.08, 3.97, 4.89
        FIP: 5.05, 4.62, 5.39
        WHIP: 1.530, 1.247, 1.481
        Innings: 66.2, 154, 81
        H/9: 11.2, 7.8, 10.1
        HR/9: 1.6, 1.5, 2.0
        BB/9: 2.6,, 3.4, 3.2
        K/9: 6.5, 8.7, 8.9
Those stats will tell you that outside of his 28 games in 2015-16…Matz has been nothing more than a backend rotation SP

Matz sucks n is soft n looks like he will cry every time he gets hooked or gives up a long ball. Years ago the Mr Magoo Wilpon said Matz “looked like his pal Sandy Koufax”. This is the owner we have. Although I’ll start next year with him Jake, Thor n I believe it’s 50/50 Wheeler comes here or Atlanta. Dump Matz next year or unless we can truly get something now. Keep Thor!

This is why the Mets will continually suck under this ownership.

Strip it down, sell it off, and rebuild. Be like Houston. NYM aren’t going to compete in the NL East for the near future, better to sell high on everyone not name Alonzo or Mcneil.

Imagine the haul they could get from Atlanta for deGrom, etc.

I feel like this might just be them posturing to get a better deal. Its come out like 5 times now in the last month that the Mets would need to be “overwhelmed” to trade Thor. Sounds like they are the ones bringing this all up to get some trade talk going.

It’s because Wilpon want to try and win a ring before he dies. He’s 82 and doesn’t think he would live through the time it takes to do a rebuild (5-6 years ish?).

Our current President was very interested in buying the Mets years ago. Lol. U need a guy like him or Jerry Jones or some billionaire who can buy Wilpon out. Maybe Tony Khan or Vince McMahon! Those guys own to win.

Overwhelmed? While posturing is part if negotiating, outside of de Grom, their other starters perhaps just aren’t as good as advertised. Thor certainly has stuff but his inconsistency pitching in a bigger ballpark in a league without a DH might be even worse if he was in the AL East.

Wilpons are blind and only care about $$. Any owner/GM with half a brain would see they need to trade off big pieces to get more talent. They will piss away Alonso and McNeil’s best years like they’ve done with Degrom.

So just hold onto Matz and Thor like they did wheeler till his trade bake is basically nothing. They needed to go into rebuild 2 years ago but were to stubborn.

Every year the delay it will just be another 2 years of sucking

Talk about a dumb FO and a blind fan base.

Next year they’ll sign a couple relievers, and maybe a SS and mark my words, Mets fans will be predicting playoffs again.

Why would they do that. Urshela has proven nothing, his success is too short to be taken seriously. Florial has been awful for two straight seasons. Frazier can’t play the field and somehow he is going to go to the league without a DH. Yankees don’t have the farm for it unless they start pushing in Torres.

Urshela doesn’t have value he’s been released by multiple teams and has seen his numbers decline after a hot 40 games. Not to mention he will most likely be dfaed by the Yankees before the start of next season for the 4th time In his career and that they Mets don’t want corner infield or corner outfield
