Phillies Designate Mitch Walding For Assignment

By Steve Adams | July 30, 2019 at 4:47pm CDT

The Phillies announced Tuesday that they’ve designated infielder Mitch Walding for assignment. His spot on the roster will go to right-hander Blake Parker, whose previously reported signing has now been made official.

Walding, 26, was hitless in two plate appearances with the Phils and has struggled considerably with Triple-A Lehigh Valley in 2019. Through 346 plate appearances there, he’s batted .204/.350/.366 with a sky-high 38 percent strikeout rate. Strikeouts were an issue for Walding last season as well, but not to this extent. The first baseman/third baseman hit .265/.390/.474 with the IronPigs a year ago and collected his first MLB hit when he reached the Majors (though he received just 19 plate appearances). Walding has a minor league option remaining beyond the current season.

Phillies are incapable of turning their high school draft picks into players. Just another example. They should fish only in the college player pools. They miss out on some talent by doing this but they always miss on their high school picks,or can’t develop them.

i think recently theyve learned to go after college talent more. they used to be uber-fixated on HS guys, but the successes of the Nolas, Hoksins, and Kingerys of the world have thought them otherwise. theyve drafted college guys three years in a row in the first round, which is a very good sign.

And when they “blossom” they are in their prime, age 26 to 28, cheap and controllable…..

DarkSide – Domonic Brown, Michael Taylor, Jesse Biddle, Cornelius Randolph, probably Mickey Moniak (jury is out), Dylan Cozens, Kyle Drabek, the list is long, but that’s just off the top of my head.

Don’t forget about the immortal Fudgie Greene, who retired at the ripe age of 22 after flaming out spectacularly in the minors (and was picked right before Jackie Bradley Jr. no less, a guy most fans were hoping we’d draft).

As one of their very few picks ever to made the majors, Walding is literally of of the 10 best picks Marti Wolever made as the Phil’s farm director.

Not surprising-Walding is a AAAA break glass in case of emergency guy. I thought the only reason he was holding a 40 man spot was the lack of confidence in Franco. Next to go is likely Gamboa, who can’t seem to hit at AA and has better prospects behind him at multiple levels….
