Twins To Place Jake Odorizzi On Injured List

By Connor Byrne | July 3, 2019 at 1:07am CDT

Twins All-Star right-hander Jake Odorizzi is headed to the injured list with a blister, Dan Hayes of The Athletic tweets. The issue should only shelve Odorizzi for one start, however. They’ll recall righty Zack Littell from Triple-A Rochester to take Odorizzi’s 25-man roster spot.

Odorizzi’s blister helped force him out of the Twins’ loss to the Athletics on Tuesday after he threw just three innings. He yielded six runs (five earned) on three hits, including two home runs, with three walks against two strikeouts. Odorizzi has now gone four outings in a row without posting a quality start, thereby raising his ERA from a near-spotless 1.92 on June 9 to 3.15 in less than a month.

Recent problems notwithstanding, this has been an impressive contract year for Odorizzi, who has helped pitch the Twins to a 53-31 record and a seven-game lead in the AL Central. The 29-year-old has capitalized on an increase in velocity to log a career-high 9.74 K/9 (against 3.05 BB/9) and a personal-best 3.59 FIP in 88 2/3 innings. While Odorizzi continues showing an aversion to grounders, he has largely avoided HRs. That hasn’t been the case during his recent slide, though, and now he’ll take a short breather.

The twins division lead is disappearing fast, they need to get aggressive on the market for arms

They’re up 7.0 games despite the Indians being 7-3. No team in baseball will sustain a 7-3 pace through the year.

Conversely, the Twins have been 5-5. Not ideal, but definitely solid enough. After all, a repeating 6-4 record would be a division championship in almost any division in baseball this year.

The A’s are an anomaly. Like, the franchise’s entire existence is an anomaly.

        7 games is nothing.
Indians were 12 games out at one point in the season.

2014: Blue Jays were 8 games behind the Yankees and guess who won the AL East that year?

Not saying Indians will win but don’t underestimate anything under 10 GB.

This isn’t just a 10 game stretch we are talking. Last 16 twins are 7-9, Indians are 11-5. Since June 1, twins are 16-13, Indians are 19-9. They were very lucky to walk away with a win yesterday to keep it from being 15-14. It’s already past time to address the needs for the twins but they’re only signing minor league nobodies

Jake Odorizzi is just coming back to Earth. He’s been a much better pitcher than I was expecting this year since I actually expected him to continue his downward slide, but I think it’s awfully premature to form the expectation his results are all performance driven.

No offense to Odorizzi, but hopefully now we’ll see Berrios in the All-Star game.

This may have been Odorizzi’s one chance to be in an All Star game. I feel awfully bad for him.

He wasn’t going to pitch in the game anyways they said as he was slated to start on Sunday and pitchers who start the Sunday before to my knowledge don’t pitch in the ASG.
