Aaron Hicks Scheduled For MRI

By Dylan A. Chase | August 3, 2019 at 11:19pm CDT

A doubleheader of games, a doubleheader of injuries for the Yankees today, as Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports that outfielder Aaron Hicks injured his elbow in Saturday’s nightcap with the Red Sox. Hicks will undergo an MRI tomorrow (Twitter link).

Of course, this news comes hand-in-hand with the news that Edwin Encarnacion will miss 3-5 weeks with a fractured wrist suffered in the first game of today’s double-tilt with Boston. Though it’s important to note that the extent of Hicks’ impairment isn’t yet known, followers of New York’s 2019 campaign have surely already been conditioned to expect the worst in regard to player prognosis.

Hicks–who already spent more than a month as an injured list resident this year following a preseason back injury–would not qualify as the 25th New York player to hit the IL this year, but his apparent injury is surely enough to cause handwringing for manager Aaron Boone. The outfielder, who is earning $8MM this season in the first year of a just-dried seven-year, $70MM pact, has been roughly league-average at the plate this year, with a 98 wRC+ in 251 at-bats (.229/.319/.440 slash line).

Well, if Hicks ends up back on the IL, maybe this will finally give Frazier another chance.

He doesn’t play anywhere hes a 24 year old DH who deleted all his Yankees related Instagram pictures when he was demoted.

Hopefully his time in scranton he used to better his defense and hopefully he did some growing up

No, it’s just that his defense needs more work. Every other outfielder is far superior on defense and at the least capable with a bat. I’m honestly surprised Frazier hasn’t been traded yet, but it’ll likely happen this winter

Frazier hasn’t been bad defensively historically. can’t explain why be had issues this year. thought maybe his vision was still bothering but you would think it would effect his hitting too but it’s not
          or doesn’t seem so.

Hey guys…do you all watch the Yankees at all…Gardner and Tauchman will share center with the other likely playing left. Maybin isn’t a center fielder. Frazier may very well be called up for his offense and inserted either at DH or in the outfield rotation with Maybin, Tauch, and Gardy in Left. With both Hicks and Encarnacion down, and Judge obviously feeling the effects of that oblique issue he had, the Yankees need some punch in the middle to later part of the lineup….Frazier likely fills that.
Bottom line….all 4 will fill valuable rolls until/if Hicks returns.
As far as first is concerned, you won’t see Frazier there,,,,,likely try to fill with Ford until/if he shows he just can’t consistently hit.

Tauchman and gardner have both been better than hicks this season.

With that being said a hicks injury is not ideal but for the time being gardner could slide into center and tauchman could play left with maybin off the bench…Frazier can DH and DJLM can play first.

The yanks have enough depth and a huge lead in the division

If Hicks hits the DL Yanks have plenty of replacements. Gardner, Tauchman, Maybin, Frazier all of which have out preformed Hicks at the plate.
Saw a stat the other day, Hicks .is a career .108 hitter with bases loaded.

I know this article is about Hicks. But I for 1 read this article and my biggest take away was Encarnacion will only be out for 3-5 weeks instead of the remainder of the season. For this I am overjoyed. Encarnacion is the team leader in Homeruns and RBI’s. He is very crucial to lengthening the lineup.

    Takeaways :

The Yankees don’t hate Frazier, they didn’t trade him for Ken Phelps.

Frazier or Tauchman is the opening day LF next year. Gardner (like Posada) could play another year, but will probably hang it up and be a Yankee for life. Unlike Posada, his last year has been productive, just not what he was earlier in his career. On most other teams, Gardner milks another year or two, on the Yankees, with so many young and inexpensive options, he is not here next year.

Cameron Maybin is fascinating. I have him penciled in as OF #4, unless the Yankees keep both Frazier and Tauchman. He won’t cost much, had a solid year, and fits in well here.

Gardner retires, Maybin will get a decent 2 yr contract for maybe 15 mill but not from Yanks, Tauchmann and Frazier will platoon in left alongside Stanton if he ever can stay healthy. Hicks in center with Florial the next man up. Judge in Right with Stanton occasionally giving him a rest.
Keeping Frazier was the right decision for the future and possibly now the present.

This continues to stun me. Gardner has an ops of .784, well above his career .738 average. He’s been worth 2.7 bwar, third highest on the team. He’s not washed up whatsoever. This narrative is really interesting, though.

Maybin – in Center field as an every day player. Come post season this guy is one gap hit from a tripe or an inside the park home run. I like his wheels and feel that his bat and legs in the post season could turn something on. A hit could turn into a double or a triple.

Frazier – I put him in Left Field I think his bat speaks for himself. .283 Average , .330 OBS. .513 slg . 743 ops and let the kid shine and play. He beats Brett Gardner in every category. I’m tired of hearing about his defense to me it’s fine.

Mike Tauchman – I bring him over Gardner

As for the Starting Pitching I’m not letting my starting Pitching start the games I’m going reliever all the way and having my starters come into the later part of the game. The Sp just isn’t holding up. Gotta think outside the box with this Starting Rotation.

In the off season Yankees need to spend and take chances on Starting Pitching. Over spend if you have to and try and
trade also. Don’t sit until the last second of July 31st.

I also wanted to add that yes anyone can win come the playoffs but have any of you seen what the Astros have done to their rotation over the years? Their rotation is unreal and they actually bolstered it before the trade deadline.

The Yankees on the other hand have done nothing at the deadline and they decided to bring back CC and Happ. Cashaman did not and I repeat did not plan very well for the starting rotation. They should be in a better position but they are not. It’s going to be one and done for the Yankees or once they hit the Astros you’ll be wishing they have went out and got SP.

When it’s all said and done to me they will not win a 2019 WS. Changes, people getting fired, a new pitching coach is needed. Yankees need to add 3 really go SP in the off season and they finally need to leard to walk away from these so call great clubhouse guys.

This team is built to win now and with a few FA from the market last year coulda put them over the edge. Let’s see if they make the same mistake next year.

So you want Frazier and maybin in left and center when they are statistically two of the worst defensive outfielders on the yankees?

Just because maybin is fast doesn’t make him a good center fielder and just because he played a below average center field 5 to 8 years ago doesn’t mean he can play center field

Funny you say that cuz in 2018 Maybin played 20 games in Center Field and has a fielding percentage of .1000. Maybin has a car .989 fielding percentage outta 13 years. MIND BLOWING FACTS!

So when a guy has a .989 outfield percentage outta 13 years. Yes I’m going to trust him out in center field.

Your facts are nothing more then lash outs. Only cuz the Yankees haven’t played in out in CF makes you think or believe he cannot play CF.

Maybin can play Center Field just fine. You don’t think so cuz the Yankees haven’t played him there.

        C Maybin .989 13 seasons
        B Gardner .992 12 seasons

Fielding percentage and Errors are poor metrics for defensive ability. You can put me in the OF for a handful of games (may god help the team) and I guarantee you that my fielding pctg. will be 1.000 because I won’t be quick enough or get reads to get to any balls going my way.

I think that is one heck of a lineup but that will be tough payroll wise unless the anks go over the top tier luxury tax. Right now they are at 170ish without signing FA or accounting for arp for 2020.

For signings, between Cole and Chapman you are going to prob going to be at min 40M bringing your total 210. Throw in Didi which i think since he is a solid fielder with an above average bat is probably at min 15 a year assuming he takes discount and at 225. Romine is a solid back up that could be a starter on some team so at min 5M and your at 230M.

For Arb,: you have Paxton is getting atleast 10M (he got 9 last year). This puts you at roughly 240 This does not include Kahnle arb (prob about 2 mil) nor Bird ( i expect they finally cut him). This also does not include 1st time arb for Judge, Sanchez, Green, or Mongomery. (im guessing a min 10M for these {i used ike davis 3M first time through and figured Sanchez and Judge would be a lot more than him}) and you are over 250M without getting any other depth or putting in pre arb salaries.

I lowballed a bunch by using the min i think will be taken but i think it will be highly unlikely it happens)
