Robinson Cano Diagnosed With Hamstring Tear

By Steve Adams | August 5, 2019 at 6:54pm CDT

6:50pm: Cano has been diagnosed with a torn hamstring, the team announced and David Lennon of Newsday was among those to cover on Twitter. The specific grade is not clear; neither is the precise timeline. While surgery is not expected to be necessary, it certainly sounds as if Cano is headed for a lengthy absence.

11:45am: The Mets announced Monday that they’ve placed second baseman Robinson Cano on the 10-day injured list due to a strained left hamstring. Fellow infielder Luis Guillorme is up from Triple-A to take his spot on the active roster. The Mets also officially named right-hander Walker Lockett the 26th man for today’s doubleheader against the Marlins. He’ll start the second game of that twin bill.

Cano, 36, has had a poor overall season in his first year with the Mets but had been heating up at the dish of late. Though he’s hitting just .252/.295/.415 through 346 plate appearances, he’d turned in four consecutive multi-hit appearances prior to his latest injury, which was sustained on what looked to be his third double of yesterday’s game. Cano erupted for a three-homer game back on July 23 but collected just two total hits in seven games between that and the beginning of his recent multi-hit streak.

It’s the third time this season that Cano has landed on the 10-day injured list. The Mets didn’t give an indication as to the severity of the strain or any type of expected timeline for his return. In his absence, the Mets can shift Jeff McNeil to second base and play one of Juan Lagares or Aaron Altherr more in the outfield. Alternatively, if the preference is to keep McNeil in the outfield, Cano’s reps at second base can be divided among Guillorme and Adeiny Hechavarria. It’s likely that some combination of those scenarios will be used to cover second base while Cano is out. He’ll join Brandon Nimmo, Jed Lowrie, Dominic Smith and Yoenis Cespedes as Mets position players on the injured list.

Too bad he was on a hot streak. It will be interesting to see how the end of the season plays out. As much as I hate BVW I give him credit for not rebuilding

Rebuilding does not ‘make too much sense’.

I generally recommend rebuilding and massive tank jobs for teams spiraling down. But that’s not really the Mets. They have 8 very good players, with 2 more that have promise to be a lot better ten they were this season.

And, as a big market team, they have the resources they need to get back in the playoffs.

The injury was directly connected to his recent resurgence of his bat. Cano has been getting on base frequently during the last 2-3 games and has been running hard. Cano’s bat has been a big part of the resurgence of the Mets and his loss will be keenly felt. They’ll be able to shift Jeff McNeil to his natural 2B position, but this will most likely mean more starts from Juan Lagares whose bat is worse than some pitchers.

So dominant starting pitching, great hitting from Cano, McNeil, Conforto, and Rosario, outscoring opponents 65-31 during the 10-2 run, and Lugo being scorching hot in the bullpen had zero to do with it?

        Just want to make sure.

Damned if you do and damned if you don’t. You Mets haters will never give credit. Lose and they get shamed on, win and its only because the team they played is worse.

All you can do is win the games that are on your schedule and they have been doing so.

All of these factors help: Better hitting from Cano, dominant starting pitching, timely hitting, improved fielding (particularly by Rosario), playing teams that are sub 500. One other key factor has been the return and effective pitching of Luis Avilan and Justin Wilson who have made the bullpen more reliable.

They played the awful Pirates and Padres – two last place teams and the White Sox – an awful franchise, 20 games back, 13 games under .500 with a -117 run differential.

And they won those games like they were supposed to. That is how a streak starts.. Do you want them to beat the Yankees and Braves when they are not playing them?

I don’t understand all this Mets hate from you guys. Can only win what is on your schedule and they are and in the process getting their guys hot.

No trophy needed for me, but you can give yourself a “at least I tried” award.

Because he has been hitting the ball with authority and had gotten his doubles stroke working requiring him to run hard. For most of the first half, he was not getting on base and was not hitting with any consistency.

    Wilpons stink.
    Organization is crap.

Expectations are always low for us Mets fan. This is just ridiculous. We always going for third tier players.
They had a chance to get players for Wheeler, Syndergaard. Etc. but this illusion that they were gonna go on a run is what happens everytime after the all star break. Then they settle back down to where they belong, In the basement.

That’s BS and you know it. When firing on all cylinders, they have the best rotation in the NL (not the MLB, that goes to Houston). I applaud BVW for not giving into the people crying to sell. They’re finally reaping the rewards of the Beltran and Dickey trades. They should keep them through their primes. They have as much of a shot at the NL wildcard game as anyone.

Three doubles means he ran hard to 1st on 3 different at bats- in one day! That’s typically a week for the guy, of course he got hurt.

    Reply
    • jim stem

Actually, he did NOT run hard down the line to 1st, that was the problem when he got hurt. He was about 75% until he got to the bag and then tried to turn it on.

Bottom line is that he makes 25 million a year and keeps getting hurt when he runs. What happened to stretching, taping, icing, heating and running in general? These incredibly gifted athletes seem to get hurt way too often doing things they do every day.

Ironically, he was busting it (finally) when the Mets already had a big lead. I guess that’s a form of justice in itself.

With their current starting pitching, Mets will pass the Phillies and Nationals in August and will secure a wild card slot. That being said, the trade for Cano is turning out to be a worst-case scenario. Diaz is a bust so far and Cano will be 37 and a half to start next year, the first of his 4 remaining, $24 million, seasons. Unless he starts taking roids again, expect the serious decline to start. I’d rather have a great defender at second next year.

That’s the same for at least 20 other teams. ‘Except for injures’ and except for under-performance’, everyone is in the playoffs.

Except for McCutchen, Herrera & Roberrtson, the Phillies win another 5+ games.

I doubt they have much insurance on a 36 year old. I mean, if you were the insurer, would you want to write a policy that pays the Mets if their 36-41 year old overpaid fielder (no DH) doesn’t play? The Mets would be looking to just get him to the IL and that money back unless it was peanuts.

The premiums would have to be insane

This might be the ultimate Met conspiracy theory, I expect Joe Beningo to lead with it tomorrow… so the Mets, rather than sell off at the deadline (which would have lowered the payroll) instead held onto everyone in the hope a wild card run, but at the same time convinced Cano to be “injured” so they could get some insurance money? (Never mind that I would guess he has already played too much of this year for the Mets to collect).
