The Yankees placed lefty CC Sabathia on the 10-day injured list for the fourth time this season, the team announced. Jonathan Loaisiga has been recalled from Triple-A.
This news hardly comes as a surprise after Sabathia exited Friday’s start after three innings. Right knee inflammation is the diagnosis, but it’s certainly worth wondering if Sabathia will be healthy enough to pitch again, in this the final season of an epic career.
The 39-year-old Sabathia finally showed signs of slowing down this season as he’s struggled to stay healthy and productive. At 5-8 with a 4.93 ERA/5.97 FIP across 20 starts and 100 1/3 innings for the Yanks this year, he’s posted just 0.5 rWAR and 0.3 fWAR on the year.
Loaisiga, 24, has 3 starts and 3 relief appearances under his belt so far this year. A lackluster 5.12 ERA/5.50 FIP can be traced to 4.7 BB/9 and 1.9 HR/9 in the small sample. He hasn’t done much more in Triple-A in an injury-shortened season, though believers can point to 11.2 K/9 to 2.5 BB/9 in Scranton Wilkes-Barre as a sign of returning to form.

Actually it’s a blessing cuz he’ll only get his hole blown out in the playoffs. Thank you for your services as a Yankee but do us all a favor ride the DL out until the season over your finished as a player. You were finished last year.

You’re 100% on.

He’s certainly done this year but I truly wish you idiots would stop this blundering that CC wasn’t valuable last year. He was brought in to be a freaking 5th starter on a 1/$10 deal and gave them 150 IP with a 3.56ERA/4.16 FIP.
Last year with innings pitched off at player least 100 in the AL, CC’s ERA of 3.65 ranked 18th overall and his FIP ranked 31st. Considering they’re 15 teams with 5 rotation spots his numbers as a #5 were excellent.
Let’s face facts. Cashman rode this Caddy until the wheels fell off and it just happened at the worse time when your ace Severino is out for the station thus far and Tanaka, Paxton and Happ have underperformed. Stop acting like CCis the reason the Yanks staff is so questionable this year. The fate of any championship caliber team should never fall on the shoulders of a number 5 starter.
If he can heal his knee the next few weeks enough to where he can be pain free and effective throwing 15-20 pitches in late September then do what most other playoff teams do and have him come out the pen in the post-season. I would trust him more than Tarpley or Cessa to get me 3 to 6 outs if his knee has healed enough. I wouldn’t pitch him at all for most of the month.

Yankees fans being fairweather trash trying to re-write history? Wow, never seen that before.

Can’t believe people still think Louie is a Yankees fan.

I hope the big guy can help from the pen and walk of the field as a champ one more time. Ppl make fun of his weight and have doubted his worthiness the last couple of years. He was valuable last year. This year was obviously a disappointment considering he already mentioned it would be his last. Go out like a champ. Do it…..(cue inspirational music)… for the big guy.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Agreed. At this point, he shouldn’t be starting anymore. He began the season with crappy peripherals and was a major concern for me throughout. As big as these guys are, they’re still pro athletes. Have you seen Bartolo Colon do a full split during pregame warm-ups? I didn’t think it was humanly possible.

Again sentimentality needs to be shoved aside in the pursuit of a championship. Sabathia will only be a detriment to this team if added to the playoff roster. There are better options for someone coming out of the pen. If Severino shows anything it would be the better option for coming in from the pen, and don’t forge about Betances.

Pope stop it. CC coming out the pen knowing he only has to get 3 outs vs a CC as a starter trying to get 15 outs likely facing 20-25 batters is a completely different scenario. I would much rather have him coming out the pen in a close game, especially if were behind 1 or 2 runs, than seeing Cessa come into a game. I have much more faith in CC getting 3 to 6 outs to hold the score than I do Cessa. It’s just a matter of “Can coming in for 1 inning with lots of rest vs 5 innings enough of a decrease in workload that CC can avoid pain and perform at a high level? I bet yes.
PopeMarley
I bet no, and sir I can voice my opinions.

Voice themselves to yourself. Real Yankee fans don’t want to hear your ungrateful, disloyal opinion.

The complainers are not invited to the parade in lower Manhattan. All the cranky spoiled loud mouths need to be sent by bus to Flushing.

Wouldve been nice if he finished his career playing for one of the bay area hometown teams. I know both giants and a’s pursued him in the past, but he probably didnt want to deal with the extra drama and inconvenience of pitching close to family and friends
selw0nk 2
It would be nice for him in Oakland with all the foul ground.
PopeMarley
He has no career ties to either organization.
Strike Four
He has personal ties to the Bay Area, genius.

Evidently he chose loyalty to a GRANDER ORGANIZATION TROLL!!!

To ask what might be a stupid question: Why doesn’t Michael King get a chance?

CC has been a great Yankee. Sad to see him hurt and struggle. He is a champ and will leave as one. Go yankees.

Sabathia has been far and above what was actually expected of him this year. He was signed to be long relief/swing man out of the pen. Hence him coming in on a 1/$8mil deal. Paxton, Severino, Tanaka along with the younger players were supposed to be the rotation. Give the old man credit for going out when he could with a bum knee and actually contributing something to the team. Where’s that bum Pedroia at this year with his bum knee? Riding the IL to get that last paycheck! At least CC tried to compete above what was expected!
YankeesBleacherCreature
CC was signed to start. What gave you the impression that he wasn’t? I don’t also don’t understand the knock on Pedroia when the Yankees have an even bigger “bum” in Ellsbury. He hasn’t made a single public comment in years and has zero accountability.
billysbballz
That’s one unflattering photo of our beloved CC. He has to take care of himself when he retires.
