Christin Stewart Among Slew Of Tigers Call-Ups

By Dylan A. Chase | September 2, 2019 at 5:59pm CDT

Several new faces will be joining the Tigers on a flight to Kansas City this evening, as MLive’s Evan Woodbery was among those to report that outfielder Christin Stewart, third baseman Jeimer Candelario, pitcher Tyler Alexander, catcher Grayson Greiner, pitcher Zac Reininger, and pitcher Daniel Stumpf will be called up to the big club in short order (Twitter link).

It would be an exercise in tedium to review the records of each player joining the Detroit dugout this week, so individual focus will instead be paid to Stewart, a player that prior to the season ranked as the team’s sixth-best prospect according to Fangraphs. Cited as being in possession of raw power and a solid batting eye, the Tennessee alum has been nonetheless seen as a work in progress, at best, on the outfield grass.

The 25-year-old was handed a substantial crack at playing time for the rebuilding Tigers this season but failed to make an impact in 327 at-bats. His .239/.321/.393 output was disappointing considering the outfielder’s solid output with Triple-A Toledo in 2018, a campaign that saw Stewart hitting .264/.364/.480 (138 wRC+) in 522 at-bats with the Mud Hens. He has been with Toledo for the entirety of this August following his demotion at the end of July.

They need to trade Boyd, he’s no good. Wondering if he’s going to reach the 50 hr total this year.

Apparently you think pitchers shouldn’t throw strike outs or that they aren’t important.

Him and Verlander might both reach it, you idiot. It seems you either have a secret crush on Boyd, or you just have more free time than anyone on earth. You bring the kid up even when he’s not mentioned.

The difference is Verlander knows how to pitch. Boyd don’t. So don’t put Boyd and Verlander In the same sentence, they don’t go like mayo and peanut butter.

Also I bring up Boyd because at the beginning of the year all you tiger fans thought he was this bonified ace, well I’m here to remind all you pansy’s, he’s not!

They actually do go together. Quite nicely, too. With run support, Boyd has 5-8 more wins. Look at the leads the bullpen coughed up or the awful run support he got every start. It’s obvious you don’t actually watch the Tigers. Verlander is getting hit hard like everyone else. Doesn’t mean it’s a direct comparison. This is Boyd’s first season of validity in the majors. Verlander didn’t reach 200 k’s or have an ERA under 3.50 until his 4th full season. This is only Boyd’s 2nd season with at least 150 IP. The way you’re discounting Boyd’s talent is beyond stupid and wrong. You either lost your girlfriend to someone he knows, or you’re just not that good at being a troll (which has been said 100 times already). Learn baseball before you subject your fingers to typing such idiotic crap.

So, a bag of retread “prospects” will tool away in an effort to absolutely ensure the Tigers get another #1 overall pick. This team makes me sad. What could have been?

Never should have traded Verlander. Should have signed Max. Never signed Zimmermann. List goes on and on and on..

So they should’ve kept onto verlander and just been mediocre for years to come and not get guys like Jake Rogers and franklin Perez? The tigers would’ve been a bunch of aging veterans that could maybe have won 75 games. They tried to sign max back but he declined their offer so there’s not much they could’ve done. As for Zimmerman he was a very good pitcher even in his last year with Washington. Lots of teams wanted to sign him, just because the tigers signed him doesn’t mean it was a bad signing at the time. It’s easy for people to make comments like these because they want everything to go their way, but the tigers have made a lot of right moves even if they aren’t the best moves for right now.

In short, yes, they should have kept a bonafide Ace and surefire Hall of Famer who just threw his 3rd no-no and built a new rotation around him instead of trading him for a glass statue (Perez), a defense only no-hit catcher (Rogers is hitting just .114..) and a guy who may or may not ever make the big leagues as a 4th outfielder (Daz Cameron). Meanwhile, since they traded him, Verlander has racked up an additional 14.8 WAR and the losers the Tigers got in return will be lucky if any of them hit that in their entire careers.

Bottom line: Tigers just completely ripped off when they traded Verlander and should have held on to him.

Verlander trade was simply a salary dump, as was most of the trades made that year. That is why the rebuild is behind schedule. The Tigers should have been less worried about saving money and more concern with getting fair value.

          Rebuild trade.
Verlander was underperforming on a kast place rebuilding team.
          Right to Trade Verlander.
Should have demanded more in return.

Verlander didn’t want to play for Detroit anymore, he was tired of the teams loosing record every year. Now he’s pitching for something, the games count again. Same with castenellos. He’s loving life away from Detroit.

DET made an attempt to extend Max Scherzer before he turned FA. He and Boras refused because they wanted more than the Tigers offered.

I’m sad they shut down the comments on Chace Numata’s passing. My wife and I saw him hit a game-winning three-run homer in Erie this summer. Also played a solid game behind the dish. He was a quality ballplayer and a beloved teammate according to his fellow Seawolves. RIP young man.

Stewart. Give him time. This year was his first look at enxtended MLB playing time. Many players take a 2-3 years before they break through consistently in MLB.

Boyd is solid and getting better every year.
Boyd is pitching on a last place rebuilding ballclub that affects a pitchers performance,
On a coentending team, Boyd is a solid #1-#3 starter.

The uninformed, lack of knowledge Trolls are out in full force here, again…

Matt Boyd is a bum. The Red Sox had Clay Buccholz (a similar trash pitcher) that everyone thought was God’s gift to a baseball mound for whatever the hell reason. Boyd could have gotten a deadline hall last year, but that potential haul shrinks with every pitch he throws for Detroit

In spite of the record and the resultant numbers, Tyler Alexander actually looks like he will someday be a good pitcher. Regardless, no DET pitcher will ever accomplish anything with the fundamentally lacking poor defense behind them. Christian Stewart is a horrible defender. What’s wrong with the Tigers’ system?

Its funny looking at the armchair QB’s on whether or not they should have traded JV or not. Its not up for debate anymore. Yes, they should have traded him & the players they got were solid but there are no guarantees in trades & they were always going to get “not a JV” back so stop whining about it already. JV was coming off of two injury filled years and still had a big contract. He is amazing us all what he has done since but lets be clear, none of those things would have happened as a Tiger. I am happy to see him go out a winner whose heart is still in Detroit then languishing on a team with no pulse. I hope he wins another World Series, Cy Young and then resigns with the Tigers in 2022! We suck but it won’t last forever. Tigers sucked from 1977 to 1983 but in those years they drafted superbly and the rest is history. Have a little faith!
