Dellin Betances Suffers Partial Achilles Tear

By Connor Byrne | September 19, 2019 at 2:54pm CDT

TODAY: After Betances visited another doctor for a second opinion, Yankees manager Aaron Boone told MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch and other reporters that surgery wasn’t recommended.  Betances will wear a walking boot for the next four weeks.

TUESDAY: Yankees reliever Dellin Betances has suffered a partial tear of his left Achilles’ tendon, Jack Curry of the YES Network was among those to report. Betances incurred the injury Sunday in Toronto, per the New York Times’ James Wagner, who adds that surgery’s currently under consideration. The right-hander will go for a second opinion, according to Wagner.

This figures to conclude an injury-ruined season for Betances, a four-time All-Star setup man whose sole 2019 outing came Sunday, when he struck out both batters he faced. Betances missed the first five-plus months of the season as a result of shoulder and lat problems. The soon-to-be 32-year-old’s newest injury could bring to an end a fruitful Yankees tenure for Betances, who’s set to become a free agent after the season. Regardless, it’s safe to say the significant health issues that have haunted Betances this year will tamp down his earning power if he does reach the open market in a couple months.

No matter what the future holds for Betances, this is yet another monumental injury for a New York club that has dealt with one after another all season. While the Yankees have barely received any contributions from the likes of Betances, ace Luis Severino (who made his 2019 debut Tuesday) and outfielder Giancarlo Stanton, and have battled plenty of other injuries, they nonetheless own the majors’ best record at 99-53. The club’s on the cusp of its first division championship since 2012, and even though it’s shorthanded, it’s undoubtedly on a small list of the game’s World Series favorites with the postseason around the corner.

It stands to reason the Yankees would boast an even better record with a healthy version of Betances, who was in an elite class of relievers from 2014-18. The normally durable Betances made no fewer than 66 appearances in any of those five seasons, during which he combined for a league-high 373 1/3 innings of 2.22 ERA/2.26 FIP pitching with 14.63 K/9 against 3.91 BB/9. New York’s relief corps has done well to weather the storm without its premier pre-ninth inning arm this season, evidenced by its overall 4.11 ERA/4.18 FIP, though it’s clearly less formidable without the towering Betances looming.

Relievers Zack Britton, Adam Ottavino and Tommy Kahnle have helped fill Betances’ void in front of closer Aroldis Chapman this season. They’ll obviously have to continue their standout work into the fall if the Yankees are going to claim their first championship since 2009.

I have not been a big fan of Boone’s. But his savages tirade was the best tv ive seen all year.

-he was polite and even empathetic of the umpire. I loved Billy and his tirades, but he was just downright mean. being politely insulted is much deeper.

-for the team, I mean who wouldn’t feel great after their manager refers to them as an f’ing savage? and the way he said it was fantastic, like he couldn’t believe that the ump didn’t know that they’re savages, like he assumed everyone knew this.

Maybe you should think about hiring a conditioning coach instead of spending $$$ on over priced players. When will the Yankees learn you can’t buy a championship?? You compete for a championship!

      @TrumpCard

Trainers and conditioning coaches can’t stave off Achilles tears. Has zero to do with conditioning. Also, Yanks aren’t buying a championship and that term is so idiotic. If it were just about having the highest salary then the Red Sox would be in 1st place, the Dodgers would have a couple more too and the Yanks would be looking for their 40th ring instead of their 28th. Most of this team was crafted in a way that almost any other team would be able to. Our starting 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, C, RF, LF and CF combined will earn less than what Manny and Harper made this year. Come with something more original….oh yeah and true.

Flippingbats, obviously he meant the new wave of talent on the Yankees has come through the system or via trades. They do have some bad contracts on the books, but also have a lot of young talent. Winning a championship comes from bringing everything together. Smh

@flippinbats79 Ellsbury’s contract is covered by insurance the same as it would be for any other player on any other team. Thus, if a team signed a player to a $20 mil contract and he ends up getting hurt for the life of the contract it would not prevent them from re-purposing the money elsewhere,

Stanton is currently NOT the highest paid player by yearly average or by total contract sum (Trout, Harper).

Stanton’s position was replaced by cheap alternatives (Voit, Tauchman, Maybin). So your point is?

But let’s harp on those two and ignore how the Yanks have Voit, DJ, Torres, Andujar, Gio, Sanchez, Judge, Gardner, Tauchman and Hicks for a combined 29 WAR (3rd highest total) for almost the same as 1 year of Harper or Machado..

It’s about 20 years past time to have a salary cap in MLB. Ridiculous having teams with 63 million payroll (Rays) trying to be competitive against a team such as the 218 million payroll (Yanks). That’s not a competition it’s a monopoly.

Having salary caps are a socialistic practice designed to protect Uber wealthy owners by limiting them from outspending each other in pursuit of championships. They have no place in capitalist sporting competitions.

its obvious you are someone that pretends they are a yankee fan. Are you even aware Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera retired. Your comment is a joke. The Yankees are winning because Brain Cashman is the BEST GM in any sport. They traded for no names, built a farm system and winning on a AAA, and AA team. Urshela, Voit, Torres, Judge, Gardy, Sanchez, German, Green, Paxton, Didi make league minimums or low salaries for what they are. Want to talk about salaries…look at Sox. JD, Betts, Sale, Price, Evoldi probably make more money than our whole team we put out there this year. they stayed away from big names and big money….they have for 5 years. The last big money player they signed was Tanaka

@kahnkobra If money was about the same (assuming it’s a 1 year deal), no way does Betances leave the Yanks. If the Mets decide to drop him an offer he can’t refuse then well…that;s the Mets for ya. I love Bets but obviously his leverage is not what it could’ve been had he not missed the entire season. I think most teams are going to want to see him healthy and pitching at a high level before giving him goo guaranteed money.

However in Kobra’s warped world, senile Fred would offer a market price to a good player? NOT

He’s too busy buying off the sale rack or overpaying for players that they traded their farm system away for who had inflated stupid contracts.

There is not a single free agent that for 20% would sign with the Mets over the Yankees.

Hey Kobra-move on. Only well informed baseball fans allowed on Yankee posts. Your group hangs with the budget fans.

I wouldn’t say it’s “great” for the Yanks. I’m sure they would prefer to have a near 100% Bets headed into the playoffs. We sometimes take him for granted but since 2014 he’s top 3 in WAR and FIP for relievers. I’m sure if healthy and pitching at the top of his game they would take that and happily pay up for 2020.

There aren’t a lot of incentive-based contracts for middle relievers. You can only really go with games pitched totals and that can be easily manipulated. Most relievers aren’t going to bite on that.

Depending on the recovery time, I could see him resigning with the Yankees on a 1 year deal for a reasonable price and than have 1 or 2 mutual options and a buyout. Unfortunately with the injury and the rough season he has had, I can’t see many teams putting out a significant offer for him. Than again, many teams are handing out 2 year deals to goes undergoing TJS knowing full well that the first year is a wash and it is essentially a 1 year deal.

If the Yankees win it all this year, this would go down as one of the greatest seasons in Yankees history…and this is coming for a die-hard Red Sox fan! The amount of injuries this team has incurred is beyond comprehension, but no matter who they brought up, traded for or recycled seemed to fit right in and they didn’t skip a beat!

The Yankees have been looking forward to Sept. for so long. Getting Severino, Betances & Stanton back. Then comes the news that Tauchman, Hicks & Betances (after 2IP) are done for the year. EE and Sanchez go down again and now the unfortunate news about their best pitcher this season (German). This doesn’t even include all the games missed by Judge, Didi, K-Pax, Voit…the list goes on and on. Through all of this, they somehow manage to maintain the best record in the AL.

If they can patch a pitching staff together for the playoffs and figure out how to outslug the Astros and most likely the Dodgers…I’ll have no choice than to tip my cap and congratulate the Evil Empire on one the most resilient, impressive baseball seasons I have ever seen! Heck, even if they lose in the first round I have a whole new respect for Cashman, Boone and the rest of the Dark Side. Job well done fellas!!!

Regardless of how this season went for Betances, the Yanks should resign him to a one year deal with incentives and an option. When healthy he is a dominant setup man and will likely be needed for depth if Chapman opts out and the Yanks let him walk.. think Britton gets promoted to closer in that scenario.
