Latest On Ketel Marte

By Jeff Todd | September 18, 2019 at 6:10pm CDT

6:10pm: Marte is being hobbled a bit by some inflammation, tweets Buchanan. He’ll also undergo a CT scan that the club has deemed “precautionary” in nature tomorrow.

7:38am: Breakout Diamondbacks star Ketel Marte was pulled from last night’s game after experiencing back stiffness, as Zach Buchanan of The Athletic was among those to cover (Twitter links). He’ll undergo an MRI today.

There’s no realistic chance at this point for the Arizona organization to complete a surprising run back to the postseason. But any miracle outcome would likely involve Marte going wild (among other things).

While it’s safe to say the D-Backs won’t sneak into the Wild Card spot, they would no doubt like to finish off the year with a winning record. If Marte is sidelined, it’d be a bit of a disappointing way to finish out the season.

At this point, there’s certainly no reason to believe Marte is dealing with an injury that will impact his future. Unless that changes, this issue won’t put a damper on a stunning 2019 campaign.

Marte, who’ll soon turn 26, has posted a whopping .329/.389/.592 batting line with 32 homers and ten steals on the year. With high-quality up-the-middle defensive work and excellent baserunning mixed in, he has played at about a 7-WAR clip.

It’d be prudent to bake in some anticipated regression when considering Marte’s future. But that still leaves an entirely exciting outlook. Fortunately for the Snakes, they’ve already locked him up to a low-obligation contract that gives the club control through the 2024 season. That pact now looks to be among the most valuable contractual assets in all of baseball.

Wonder what happens to all these “phenoms” if the baseball gets adjusted back to the way it used to be…..

Statcast doesn’t lie. 7 raw with defensive ability and + base running is a heck of a tool set.

he’s got 21 triples and 16 stolen bases in the last two years, which seems kind of amazing. how many other players in baseball have more triples than stolen bases with at least 15 SBs (weeding out fluke guys like Evan Gattis)?

Nicholas Castellanos has nearly 3 triples for every steal in his career.

Contract was a “heist” this year…let’s see what he does next year…he has no history that even comes close to this kind of offensive output!

Unless he regresses to Chris Davis levels, which I highly doubt, this contract is still a steal.

That SEA-ARZ trade keeps getting juicier. Just when you think Jerry won the trade.

Arizona should’ve always had the benefit of the doubt here. Marte and Walker were massivly regarded in the past and both seemed simply waiting to break out in recent years. if Walker was healthy they might have not even traded Goldy and instead considered themselves serious postseason contenders from the start.

Marte really broke out last year. He had an OPS in the neighborhood of .880 after May 1.

Depends. Will Taiwan Walker ever manage to pitch again? The guy could injure his elbow while brushing his teeth…

Seems like a win-win really. It’s too bad Haniger and Walker have been out.

Marte resembles A’s Marcus Semien. just a star written all over the place. BTW. Marcus is a potential free agent in 2021 so Oakland must be ready to pay the big bucks…

I don’t think Ketel Marte is a “Flash in the Pan”. I compare him with Joe Morgan. In HOU, Morgan was the run scoring set up man for Jimmy Wynn. On the Big Red Machine, he was still counted on as a run scorer but also as a producer. (According to Ken Griffey Sr, Sparky Anderson favored Morgan and used Griffey as his set up man). Once Paul Goldschmidt and AJ Pollock left, Marte matured into the feature role.

I want to make a comparison. Don’t get me wrong the D-backs we’re wise. But check out what Tommy Edman is doing for the Red Birds. While he probably won’t ever match Marte in power, he has been the best Red Bird this month been the best Red Bird this month. I know this is unrelated, but since Tommy cannot get recognition on this site it is apt. His baserunning, defense, surprising power, has been the difference lately. Give him his due.

Jeff you remember when we used to argue about this back when he was with the M’s? I was where’s Lou back then. I kept arguing he was going to be good just needed time. Took a bit longer than I thought it would but still he is pretty good now.

I am not sure if I would trade Crawford for him now. Younger and will be as good or better. I like what Jerry has done here the team will be fun to watch on a few years.

Not to take anything away from Marte and the season he’s having, but it’s guys like him, Escobar, Kepler, and more that make me wonder if anything is going on besides the juiced balls.
